My husband and I are so happy we were able to adopt our puppy through OPH a few weeks ago! Everyone that we talked to was super helpful and thoughtful in regards to helping us find the right dog for our family. OPH took great care of him before we were able to bring him home and he had an awesome foster mom that updated us often. We now have a healthy and happy dog that we love so much and can’t imagine our lives without him! We definitely recommend going through OPH to rescue a dog or cat in the future and we will be sure to go through them to adopt again once the time is right.
I would adopt from this organization again hands down!! From the application process to adoption, you can tell the people running the organization truly care about the animals they foster. Thank you Laurie for taking such great care of Kanga. She is a wonderful addition to our family.
There are no words to say how impressed and moved we are by the dedication of everyone we have met at OPH. We lost our beloved rescue dog and quickly saw that we needed anther dog to make our house complete. We called Robin, an incredible woman, who did an intake, interview, and matched us with our wonderful Auntie Em. What is most poignant was that our little girl was originally found with her new puppies- and she was emaciated..Thanks to the incredible work of Elizabeth, her foster Mom, we met Auntie Em when she was healthy and clearly fully loved. We consider it an honor to have her-and could not say more positives about OPH.
OPH is an incredibly successful Rescue that achieves it’s success by following high standards in making sure that dogs and cats are adopted by qualified adopters.
Our family adopted Happy 9 years ago from OPH, then Faolan 2 2/2 years ago .
We have chosen to donate on a regular basis to make sure more dogs and cats continue to be rescued or spayed or neutered in their community outreach programs. OPH also bring much needed supplies to shelters in the south that are teetering in the edge of euthanasia as their only resort.
I was going to make my regular gift on Giving Tuesday ( we adopted from them 6 years ago) to Operation Paws for Homes and I went and looked at the available dogs. We were not looking for another dog but then I saw, "Small Business Saturday". It was love at first sight. There were seven Irish Wolfhound puppies that were so adorable and they all needed forever homes. We were so lucky to have got Saturday. Her new name is Faolan which means little wolf in Gaelic.
Faolan is thriving and is constant entertainment for her canine sister, Happy and the whole family.
The follow up from OPH shows their commitment to finding the best homes for they rescues. If you are looking for a worthy organization that spends their donations not overhead, this is that organization. All the volunteers that I have met or communicated with are knowledgeable about animal welfare.
Donna, Thank you for the lovely comments! The Every Dog Has It's Day litter were very special to us. We love knowing that each of them are in a fabulous home!
We just adopted our first puppy, and I am so thankful we decided to adopt from Operation Paws for Homes (OPH)! We were approved by several different rescues, but it was the thoroughness and excellent communication of the director and volunteers that made us go with OPH. They explained and took us through every step of the process, answering all of our questions and providing us with many additional resources about puppies and what to expect. They also provided us with all of his medical records ahead of time, including future care due dates. On adoption day, we met our selected puppy and got to spend some quality time with him. The foster family was right there the whole time to again answer questions, provide more information about the puppy, and to make sure we were a good fit. (They also maintained proper social distancing and more than followed the proper guidelines to prevent the spread of Covid-19.) We took our puppy home that day, and even though we had almost a 4-hour drive, it was the best decision we could have made. It is very clear that our puppy was well taken care of, well socialized, and loved by the foster family. He is amazing! Being our first experience with a dog, we were extremely nervous about adoption. However, OPH made this a great experience. I cannot say enough about them and highly recommend them if you are looking to adopt and/or support an animal rescue.
This is an awesome rescue! I have adopted a couple of dogs from OPH. The adoption coordinators ask questions to try and match you with the right dog for your lifestyle. They do a good job of preparing you for dog ownership. With my adoption I received free training resources, 30 days of free pet insurance,. My dog was healthy and had received great care in his foster home. I love my OPH dogs.
I adopted a dog from OPH and it lasted less than 48 hours. Unfortunately, the dog we adopted ended up attacking another dog. No information was provided about the dog other than he had no aggressive tendencies and was good around dogs and people. He was not aggressive to me or my daughter but he would certainly bark if we moved him away from the window when he was fixated on people outside. The reason we would move him is because we live in an apartment building (its pet friendly) but he would bark over and over non-stop. He was super unresponsive to his name, and commands as well as treats at times. On a walk, he ended up pulling and tugging to get out of his harness and attacked a dog in the neighborhood. We found out that he was a stray dog prior (again we received no information about his medical records and the foster had none either.) He also pooped and urinated in the home multiple times and would not go on a walk after he attacked the other dog. The situation was really bad and now I have a vet bill on my hands from a neighbor. I will say OPH has been helpful through the situation but make sure that you verify everything is accurate before you adopt the dog. We also drove 2 hours to pick him up and back, and 2 hours to surrender him and back. The entire process was highly stressful.
I would like to stay anonymous due to the nature of the story.
We are very sorry that your experience adopting with OPH was not what you had hoped. We do our best to provide as much information as possible to adopters and to provide as much post-adoption support as possible. We often have little information about the dog’s history before arriving in the shelter, and can only report observations of their behavior in their foster home. In this case, the foster family did not experience the same issues you experienced- the dog did not have any potty training accidents in their home, had been manageable on walks, and the dog had met other dogs without issue. The transition into a new home is often very stressful and overwhelming for the dog. Despite our efforts sometimes adoptions are not a good fit. Since this was not a good match, our team worked quickly to find a solution and fully refunded your adoption fee.
I adopted my dog Elly May, (now affectionately known as "Bev") in Dec 2017. The volunteers helped to match me with a dog. Initially, I was interested in a beautiful English Setter, but she had a bite history. Since I was a first-time dog owner, the rescue shared their concerns about a novice dog owner caring for an older dog with a bite history. I agreed that it would not be the best fit for me. I got matched with a young Schnauzer mix, and it could not have worked out better! The foster that cared for her, Andrea, looked to have taken excellent care of Bev. I know multiple people who have adopted w/ OPH and they also had great experiences. I donate to OPH to this day.
Thank you so much for the incredibly kind words! We appreciate the support and will share your words with our foster team. We hope Bev is doing amazing.
I filled out an adoption form giving phone numbers for our 3 references and the vet phone number as requested. I received an email requesting email addresses for our contacts because "contacts tended to respond better to email requests". I responded that our contacts would respond better to a phone call and if they left a message the call would be returned. Two days later I received the same email requested worded exactly the same obviously a form type response. I reached out to our contacts, they have not received a call from OPH. It has been over two weeks and there has been no contact. It appears that unless you provide email addresses your application gets discarded. I am extremely disappointed.
We are so sorry that you were disappointed. As an all volunteer organization, we request email addresses so people can respond at their convenience, but are willing to work with you if your references don't have an email address. Contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org if you would still like to submit an adoption application and I will be happy to help.
I did check your file and the person checking your references did call the people you listed, but the calls were not returned.
OPH was extremely helpful in bringing us together with this precious pup! They worked tirelessly to make sure that we were a good fit for each other. They took great care in their screening and were very accommodating to our needs and wants as it pertains to finding the right pup. Katie, Jackie, and Barbara all played an instrumental role in this process. You can tell how much all of these volunteers and staff members love the dogs they work for. They are so caring, passionate, and dedicated to the cause. We couldn't ask for a better experience! On behalf of our new furry family member, we say thank you OPH!!!
I recently worked with Operation Paws for Homes to find a new canine family member. After months of research we decided to send applications to a few different rescues to get approved for adoption so when a dog came along that we liked we could meet her and adopt her quickly. I am shocked at how bad the communication was with all other shelters BESIDES Operation Paws for Homes (OPH). The staff at OPH is very responsive, detailed, and thoughtful. They are meticulous in the adoption process which is great as they ensure prospective adopters are going to be a good fit for their pets. After filling out an application we were approved within days, we were then able to schedule a visit with the foster family and our pup Lizzie.
Upon adoption we were provided detailed paperwork with our new dog's (Lizzie) medical records, a bag of food, and were educated on her daily routine, likes and dislikes, and commands. Our dog was a stray so she is going to require some training but she's a sweet dog and you can tell that OPH and the foster family took great care of her. I thought she would be aggressive, isolate, and passive but she is playful, socialized, and energetic. I would highly recommend OPH to anyone considering adoptions, I've already passed their contact information to a few friends.
Side note: I literally still have pending applications out with other rescues which I sent well over a month ago (MAMAS Shelter / Safe Haven Puppy Rescue is the worst). Go with a rescue that cares about the dogs and is responsive in getting them to the right home at the right pace
OPH is a top notch organization with top notch volunteers. They do amazing work. I couldn't be happier to have adopted from them.
After losing my 10 year old Cocker Spaniel to renal failure in February, I initially wanted to adopt another Cocker. The thought of adopting any other type of dog didn't even cross my mind. After searching the various Cocker rescue groups in the area, I didn't find a dog that I thought would fit in with my two, young cats. It was at that point, I decided the best course of action was to adopt a puppy.
Two of my neighbors volunteer for OPH and suggested that I complete an application...just to get the ball rolling. After I completed the application, I searched their website and saw the sweetest little boy ever. As luck would have it, I am now the proud mom of Avi; whose heritage is unknown.
Throughout the adoption process, I was extremely impressed by the level of communication and education provided by OPH. Of course they did a thorough check of me as a potential adoptor as well. They truly care about the welfare of their dogs.
The couple who fostered the litter of pups that Avi was a part of sent daily updates on their progress and tons of wonderful photos and videos; making sure to highlight each and every pup. I fell in love with my guy before I even met him.
I've had Avi for two weeks now, and the rescue is still in touch with me; making sure our transition is going well, checking to see if I need anything. They also sent out a coupon for a free training session with one of their training partners. This was truly unexpected and greatly appreciated.
If you are looking to add a dog or cat to your family, I would highly recommend working with OPH.
During a visit to a Strawberry Festival in Virginia, we saw a group of dogs at a vendor booth.
We had never heard of OPH (Operation Paws for Homes) but did stop to pet the dogs. One in particular grabbed our hearts.
My husband and I lost our beagle in January of this year and had not decided about getting another dog.
The beagle we had was a lost dog that my son found on the side of a road in West Virginia while fishing.
He started Graduate school and just could not take care of a dog. We were "empty-nesters" and had a 14 year old Lab at home.
We certainly helped out our son and began our love affair with our little friend.
Our Lab also fell in love but only lived another 5 months.
Our beagle helped to fill that loss.
This was our fist rescue.
Now back to the Strawberry Festival, we decided to take the paperwork and the card.
We thought we would apply and see how the whole process would go.
We were in Virginia for the festival and live in Pennsylvania.
OPH turned out to be an amazing organization. They responded quickly and always had the information we needed.
It was a great experience. And when we were approved and met the foster family of our little beagle, it sold us on OPH. She was so kind with her information and desire to help this precious dog.
After taking him home, our beagle has been so great. Everyone with OPH has made sure we are doing well and that the dog is doing well.
I will always return to OPH and will recommend them to anyone looking for an animal.
Sydney, our beagle, has won our hearts and is part of our family.
We are grateful to OPH for saving the life of this amazing dog. We feel he was saved for us.
Bill and Susan A.
I applied to adopt a puppy through a different rescue organization. I received an email message saying that my application had been received, but was never contacted again. When I found a puppy that interested me on the Operation Paws for Homes website, I filled out an application and was contacted less than two days later even though it was a holiday weekend. From that point on, the process went very quickly, with frequent communications from the Operation Paws for Homes staff and the puppy's foster mom.
We ended up adopting the puppy that I had originally chosen when he was old enough to leave his mother and we are so thrilled to have him. Prior to him coming to our home, he had already been seen by the vet at least twice for his initial examinations, shots, medications and microchipping. All through the process, we received resources and advice about preparing for, caring for and training our new puppy. The people who work at Operation Paws for Homes have a lot of dog experience. If I ever need advice about my pup, they will be a great source of information.
Two years after losing our dog to cancer, we felt that the time was right for another dog. Referred by our daughter, we contacted OPH and went through the adoption qualification process. After multiple conversations and a thorough vetting, we were approved for adoption. Our preference was a puppy's we were placed on the puppy adoption email list. When we saw a puppy that seemed to meet our most important criteria, we contacted the OPH puppy coordinator. That ultimately led to us selecting the puppy that we wanted, after the OPH coordinator agreed that he was the best fit based upon our conversations. We met him at his foster mom's place and decided that he was right for us. We brought him home, along with a very comprehensive and informative file that showed his shot record, and any other critical facts that were known about him. In addition, there were excellent reference materials. We love our puppy, he has responded with love to us, and our house is now complete in a way that only a dog can provide. Throughout this process, OPH was thorough, professional, and completely dedicated to providing what is best for the dog and the adopters. Thank you!
We love OPH rescue. We have rescued two dogs through OPH. An older 7 year old King Cavalier Spaniel and now a 15 week old puppy mix. We love the network of foster homes OPH works with and the fact that we are saving dogs from kill shelters. Our little puppy was found in a garbage dump and nursed back to health. All the volunteers are stellar!! We are so blessed to have these dogs as a part of our family and we will continue to rescue dogs as long as we have the resources to give them a good home. We highly recommend OPH to all dog lovers and people committed to rescue.
We have been thinking about getting a dog for a few months, so we went to an adoption event featuring Operation Paws for Homes. It was absolutely love at first sight when we saw Ginger at the adoption event. You could tell she was nervous and uncomfortable but she was holding it together! We wanted nothing but to bring the sweet little girl home and to love her back to normal. We decided that if we didn't get her, we weren't adopting anytime soon. The adoption process was quick and easy and her foster mom, Mindy was extremely helpful from the moment we met her and Ginger to now, answering literally every question we had to help us transition Ginger from her home to ours. It's only been 2 days but Ginger is doing extremely well in our home and is getting love and attention every moment we're near her. She's the sweetest little pup and we can't thank OPH and Mindy enough for their love and hard work. Thank you!
For a few months I had been searching for a new dog after grieving the loss of my beloved dog of 16 years. I'd tried the local shelters, but in addition to there not being as much variety as I'd liked, it was tough not knowing the back story of many of those dogs. Through a simple online search I stumbled upon OPH, and was immediately impressed with them. Their website is so easy to use, and the stories accompanying each profile gives you incredible insight into the journeys these dogs have taken. Once I expressed my interest, their process was amazingly thorough and personalized. I was even given the option of trial adoption based on my dog's background, but we became convinced that our new addition is the perfect fit. Thank you OPH for handling my family, and our sweet boy Ronan, with such TLC. I am in awe of the selfless work that you and your volunteers do for the good of animals. Forever grateful! The Nyantehs
I have adopted two wonderful dogs from OPH. I am so happy to have two new members of the family! Both foster families I worked with were great. Obviously people with big hearts!
We recently adopted a beagle mix via OPH and are thrilled with our new family member and the ease of the process to bring her home. From start to finish, the folks at OPH were professional, helpful and friendly. The application process was very straightforward and all our questions were answered in a timely fashion. Our dog, Penelope Jane, now renamed Laylee, was in foster care via OPH and the family who took care of her couldn't have been nicer! It was obvious when we went to pick up our new family member, that her foster family really cared about her and treated her like family, too. We are grateful to OPH for all their hard work and efforts on behalf of animals, ensuring they find safe, comfortable furever homes with hoomans that will continue to care for them like the folks at OPH.
Peanut, Smokey, Bentley and Laylee
We highly recommend OPH. They responded to our application very quickly and have been responsive all through the process. Everyone we have dealt with has been professional, kind, and a pleasure. They have been very thorough in providing us with resources and follow up to ensure our rescued dog adjusts well. Their concern and love for homeless dogs is very evident. Two thumbs up and a big thank to OPH!
After my beloved dog died, I went on a search for another canine companion to share my home. I’m so glad I found OPH. From initial contact, the process was easy. My adoption coordinator found a dog who would be a great fit for our family and we had the support of two amazing fosters.
I would adopt from this group at any time. I’m so grateful for them and they opportunity they gave me and my new fur kid :)
OPH connected our family with our furbaby, Hopscotch (now named Bailey)! Everyone at OPH was wonderful to work with through the adoption process, and Cara, Bailey's foster mom was very helpful. On adoption day, she was thorough and detailed so that knew what to expect when we brought her home. I would definitely recommend adopting through OPH!
I searched, for a long time, and applied to several rescues and shelters. It wasn't until I discovered OPH that my dream was finally realized. OPH has numerous breeds, ages, and sizes to choose from when you are considering adoption. All the representatives I communicated with were very professional and timely in their responses. OPH's concern with animal welfare is noticeable in their contract expectations and screening process. It was a pleasure working with them as well as the foster provider for my family's new pup. Thank you OPH!
I adopted an 8 week okd puppy and then 10 weeks later adopted a 16 week old puppy. Both adoption experiences were great, easy and thorough. Both fosters, Sheila Cole and Livia McCartney, are amazing women and gave Scout (aka Mustang Sally) and Willow (aka Parthenia) the best head start possible. This rescue agency is managed by my we'll and I have complete trust with them.
I am moving to West Virginia in the summer to a home with 20 acres of land. My dream is to offer a home to dogs in need. I'm excited about this and will work with OPH.
We had been looking for a dog to adopt for several months. This was our final effort when we came upon OPH's post of a Black Lab/Feist mix. What drew us to her was her sweet face. We applied, and the staff and the foster care giver were very helpful and supportive. Fate apparently played a hand, because there was a couple interested before us. However, they changed their minds and on my birthday, we received the email that we could adopt in their place. Two days later we pick her up and using the name we had already picked, Addie, we brought her home. She immediately became a loving member of the family. She's smart, loving, cute, playful and just the best. Her becoming a member of our family is due to the excellent management and assistance of all those at OPH.
OPH has been amazing in every single way. After processing my application quickly, we talked on the phone for an hour talking about my past experiences, my current living situation, aspirations as a dog owner, and which dogs would be a good fit. They steered me towards Bilbo, and he was the perfect fit. They treat dogs with medical issues which is rare among rescues, and they helped me understand how to take care of a dog after heartworm treatment. They worked incredibly hard to help me find my dream dog and I couldn't be happier!
We are beyond thrilled that Bilbo is the perfect addition to your family. We wish you nothing but years of happiness.
We adopted our furbaby, Selma Mae (formerly Nancy) from OPH four years ago and she has been the absolute best dog for us. She has the sweetest disposition and just naturally goes with the flow. We love her to pieces. From start to finish, the application and adoption process was easy and smooth with clear communication from OPH staff and her foster mom. When Selma tested positive for heartworms a year after adopting her, OPH was right there to aid in getting her treatment and taking care of the costs as we had her on preventatives the whole time. We now live in Kosovo and Selma is here with us too! When we rescued some abandoned puppies from our street, OPH stepped up and found fosters in the states for them. Now, these two Kosovo street pups have forever homes in the US with adoring owners thanks to OPH! I am inspired by the amazing work and dedication of the staff and volunteers at OPH and am considering fostering here in Kosovo to do my part to help the many, many homeless and needy dogs that deserve a chance for a better life. Thank you OPH for all you do!
Nothing better than a happy ending!
We had a great experience adopting with OPH. The volunteers were all friendly and helpful through the process. They share lot’s of information both before and after adoption to answer questions and remind you of the ups and downs with adopting a rescue pup. This is our fourth rescue and definitely the most thorough rescue organization we have worked with, both in the application and follow up. We highly recommend!
Thank you for adding 4 rescue dogs to your family. We are honored to be part of their journey!
Thank you for the kind words. We are lucky to have so many wonderful volunteers.
I am forever grateful to Debbie Ryder Tindal and OPH for bringing Kaylee in to my life.
Yes, Debbie is an amazing adoption coordinator!
Because of this amazing organization we added two beautiful, loving, dogs and at least one would have never added to our family without the intervention of OPH getting her the lifesaving medicine for her heartworm.
Heart worm positive dogs hold a special place with OPH as many rescues will not pull them from the shelters. OPH treats approximately 100 each year! Thank YOU for adding these two adorable dogs to your family!
I have adopted two wonderful dogs from OPH. The volunteer staff is very responsive and is dedicated to finding the right match for you. Not only do they rescue dogs, they support dog shelters with limited means by donating food and other supplies. I could not recommend OPH enough!
Thank you! We are proud of our community that helps collect donations for our shelter partners. Donations are always welcome - from food to bedding, cleaning supplies, toys and treats.
My family wanted a rescue dog and we found one we liked on the OPH website. We filled out an application. This nice respectful volunteer contacted me -- She listened to my background, my experience with dogs, asked me some key questions, and helped me to get approved to be a rescuer. I then contacted my dog's foster parent. She drove over an hour to meet me and show me the dog. I fell in love. After the adoption we had some issues introducing my new dog to our cat, and the foster parent was so patient while we worked through it. Finally, I joined the Facebook closed group. It is amazing how many great dog owners there from this organization. The volunteers are so dedicated and genuine. This organization goes to north carolina every 2 weeks and clears out the kill shelters. What a great organization.
We are happy that things are going well with your pup and cat. We now have a training initiative for all new adopters to support them during the transition time.
We love OPH because they helped us find our sweet lab mix Eevee! Everything from the application, to meeting her with her foster family, and completing the adoption process was so easy and they communicated every step in a clear and timely manner. It took us a while to find Eevee, cause puppies get adopted quick, but here we are 4 years later and couldn't be happier. I have recommended OPH to my friends that have expressed interest in adopting in the northern VA area.
I was very impressed with the comprehensive adoption process offered by Operation Paws for Homes when I applied to adopt my boy Trevor. The staff was thorough, compassionate, well-informed and extremely professional. The personal commitment these people have to pulling animals from high-intake shelters in order to foster them in their own homes to ensure they get the chance to have a fantastic life is unbelievable (and inspirational). I honestly can't say enough wonderful things about Operation Paws for Homes. Top Notch, these people have great hearts.
Without loving homes like yours, we couldn't do our job! Thank YOU for adopting!
I wanted to be involved in rescue and a friend was fostering for OPH and encouraged me to volunteer. In Oct 2014 I did my first transport to pick up a dog from transport to take a dog to a kennel until a foster home became available. I ended up fostering that dog and have been fostering and volunteering ever since. OPH is a wonderful organization and has some of the most dedicated volunteers.
Here's a Pic of our current OPH foster Monty.
Fostering dogs is like eating potato chips - no one can ever stop at one! So glad that you're hooked!
I learned of OPH several years ago when I was looking for a rescue dog and applied to adopt once of theirs. During the adoption process, I was very impressed with everyone with whom I came into contact. Kind, communicative, organized, and obviously passionate about the mission of OPH. I started following the group on social media and donating to them multiple times. When my personal situation became such that I had additional free time, I decided I wanted to spend that time volunteering with a dog rescue group. OPH immediately came to mind, so I applied to be a volunteer. I spent a few months "getting my feet wet" with OPH by volunteering at events and writing dog bios. Again, I was impressed at the organization and communication among volunteers. Hearing the calls for additional fosters to save dogs that would otherwise be euthanized, I decided I was ready to become an OPH foster. I am currently fostering my first pup with OPH and it's been a fantastic experience. I am so glad to be part of this amazing organization and helping to save the lives of so many deserving dogs!
We have so many ways for the public to get involved. Where ever your talents lie, we can find a position for you. Thanks so much for being a part of our village!
We are a two time adopters with Operation Paws for Homes!!! I would do it again if the opportunity presented itself!! Love.my OPH furbabies!!! It's a great organization to work with!
Rescuing dogs is a noble mission.....but doing it “right” is complicated and demanding, rewarding and sometimes sad, heartwarming and exhausting....and worth it every time, every pup. It takes incredible dedication from every person involved....when they can help, every time they help. It takes a broadly talented group who care about the lives they are impacting and saving. It takes so much more than I knew before joining Operation Paws for Homes. I’ve received a completely new type of education at this point in my life.....one that saves lives. But I go to bed at night knowing “I’ve helped save lives...me!.....along with the hundreds of members of our village”. Operation Paws for Homes is an incredible group devoted to rescuing dogs and supporting those who help achieve that mission......and we can have as much puppy love as we might want along the way!!
We love all of our volunteers and cherish each one of them!
I adopted a best friend from OPH. The entire organization is well organized and communicates well with adopters. The organization provides support and resources post adoption which makes the process less daunting.
I was so pleased with the way things were done I started volunteering after adopting my pet.
Thank you for the kind words. We are so happy for all of you!
I joined OPH as a volunteer over 6 years ago. In that time, the rescue has grown by leaps and bounds. What I love best is our ability (and willingness) to adjust our processes in a way to best meet the needs of the dogs we rescue. We interact with a plethora of different personalities, both human and canine, on a daily basis and, based on what we learn, are able to adjust our thinking, processes and programs to best support our mission. From children's programs, senior dog sanctuaries and prison programs, our dogs are given every possible opportunity to find the safe harbor they deserve. We all have have jobs, families, dogs and responsibilities aside from the rescue -- but we give as much as we can whenever we can. If you ever wanted to do something "good" -- this is the place!
Thank you for the many years of dedication and hard work you've given to OPH. It's truly appreciated!
Best support system for adopters and volunteers. It takes a village to rescue dogs, and OPH knows it! I have been fostering with them since November of 2016. The foster support system is wonderful. So many people willing to jump in and help others if they are having problems with their foster dogs. With the help of their in place system and encouragement, I have fostered 74 dogs. I love fostering because it gives these dogs a chance that they might not otherwise have. Plus it gives me my puppy fix. Seeing the joy on the adopters faces is an experience I cannot put into words.
You are a valuable member of our village - thank you!
Adopting through Operation Paws for Homes was a great experience for us! Our adoption application was processed very quickly, and everyone that we dealt with along the way was very pleasant and helpful. We were able to visit our pup, Thor before adopting him and it was obvious that his foster family was very loving and took great care of him. They gave us a lot of helpful advice and information, and even sent us home with some food, a collar, and some of Thor's favorite toys! Since the adoption, we have kept in touch with some members of the OPH community who are always very eager to receive updates and photos of Thor enjoying his new home. It is very obvious that all of the volunteers are passionate about what they do, and that they will do everything they can to keep these pups healthy and place them in safe homes. I would highly recommend anyone looking for a new dog to adopt through Operation Paws for Homes.
Not only do our volunteers and fosters love the updates, but so do our shelter partners. They are encouraged by your stories to keep getting the dogs out of the shelter.
We've had the most wonderful experience with Operation Paws for Homes! I would highly recommend OPH to anyone in the mid-atlantic region looking for a fur-baby. We found them through petfinder and haven't looked back. Once we were approved through OPH we easily chose a pet online from https://ophrescue.org/dogs (a detailed listing of each dog currently fostered or in the process of being rescued, updated daily+) that matched what we were hoping for. We met our pup, Cosmo, who was being fostered less than an hour away. He had gotten sick after being rescued and the foster parents took amazing care of him. We had to wait a week before we could take him home due to his illness, but that gave us plenty of time to prepare our home for our new addition. Cosmo is a wonderful 8 month old black lab (mix?). He must have been owned before he became a stray (he was brought to a shelter in South Carolina at around 7 months old) because he is the most well behaved and easily trained puppy! We are so thankful that OPH saved him from harm and brought him home to us (with a quick stop at a wonderful foster home!).
Our Medical Coordinator, Tracy, is amazing and so helpful and patient with our fosters. We're thrilled that Cosmo is doing well and in such a loving home!
We adopted our little minnie from this organization two years ago. It was a challenge because our little had come from a puppy mill
She is afraid but now has learned to trust us. We love her so much!
From sad stories come happy endings - so happy for all of you!
We found our new little girl trough OPH, and couldn't be happier! I've worked with and adopted from quite a few rescues in the past, and never have I been so impressed! They truly work as a team, making sure the pup is the right fit for the family, making sure you have all of the health and training information you need before bringing the pup home, and the followup support afterwards is wonderful. Annette and Randy did a phenomenal job acclimating our girl to home life with kids, cats and dogs while they fostered her, and her manners are wonderful thanks to them! Our girl has made herself at home and claimed us as hers, and her 4-legged siblings are really doing well with her, too! I can't say enough wonderful things about this team of amazing animal-loving rescuers! The next time we're looking for a new family member, OPH is the first place we'll look!
Thank you for the kind words! Annette and Randy are truly special people with huge hearts!
I grew up in a family with Irish Wolfhounds(4 of them were rescues from national breed organization) & my husband grew up with German Shepherds.... however, we were both open to adoption and I began searching and applying to different rescue organizations in May of 2017! We had a few “standards”, had to be good with kids and other animals as we live on a farm, and we wanted a larger breed dog! Unbeknownst to us the struggle to adopt was harder than we anticipated ... we found our family rejected 5 times ( 2 because we have a young child, 1 because we live on a farm, 1 because I work out of the home ONE day a week, & the final one was when our Barn cat didn’t show up on our vet reference as being spayed.... she’s tipped=visibly spayed!) None of the other rescues took into account that I had trained/handled large breed dogs my whole life or that I am a certified vet assistant... I have more animal experience than your average pet owner, yet We were deemed unfit. I had all but given up on adopting our perfect companion until I found OPH.... not all rescues are as awesome as them! & my veterinarian actually turned me off of a 6th rescue that I was considering going through, as he described them as basically a million dollar puppy mill Operation that abandoned the mom’s.... I love that OPH always tries to get the moms and place them too! As far as my adopted guy, my vet described him as “as close to puppy perfect you can get”... that’s a testament to the amazing care he received once he arrived at Laurie’s since his whole litter came in infested with parasites and had heart murmurs because of them-most of them outgrew them! OPH also worked with us to find a good fit for our farm life and understood my desire to adopt a certain pup that came in from an Irish Wolfhound mom (Dad unknown!). I am forever grateful for OPH!! Our Saxby isn’t as big as we thought he was going to be, but he is sooo wonderful and my son tells him every day that he is his best friend!!
Thank you for the kind words. We are happy to report that your pup's momma is now living at Laurie's full time. She's feral and not adoptable at this time, but we didn't give up on her! On the plus side - no more pups for her!
We lost our lab to cancer almost one year ago. It took us that long to realize that we still had a lot of love to give a dog. I found OPH from their website. At first we were interested in another lab, but were not far enough into the adoption process to get her. We looked for two nights at the adoptable dogs and kept coming back to Treeter (who has since be renamed to Trudy Scrumptious). They say things happen for a reason. Well, I can tell you that Trudy was meant to be with us. She is a very sweet girl who loves to give kisses. The volunteers and foster at OPH could not have been more helpful. They were honest about the dog's disposition, knowledgeable about her needs, gave us helpful tips and website resources and checked in with us that first week. Overall, it was a wonderful experience and I would do it again through OPH.
OPH was absolutely amazing during my process of adopting Amelia! Amelia had a health issue where part of her toe had to be amputated, so the adoption process took longer than expected. Her foster mom, Mikaela, and OPH kept me updated the entire time and I felt very comfortable knowing she was in the best hands possible. We have had Amelia for one week now and we can't imagine our lives without her. She is such a sweet girl and has brought so much joy to our home. Thank you OPH!!!!!
Operation Paws for Homes is an outstanding rescue. From beginning my search and coming across some of their rescues, to my final decision to take one as my own, the process was simple but diligent, and their volunteer network is great. I cannot say enough good things about Zander's Foster Mother, who took on 8 puppies and raised happy healthy pups for adoption. She even gave me a bag of goodies to take home with him, which was both extremely generous and helpful because it clued me in to his likes as far as toys and treats went - and everything was thoughtfully high quality. OPH did a very good vetting process to assure I was a responsible human who would love and raise a well-adjusted happy dog, and their commitment to maintain lifelong responsibility of a pet if the owner give the animal up is a real testimony to living up to their mission. I would recommend them to anyone and everyone. Zander would too!
We had lost one of our our beloved dogs of many years and had thought for a long time of bringing another dog into our home and that's where OPH came in. We had never adopted before. Lisa Wolff Taylor, a Coordinator for OPH, helped us along this journey to find our wonderful adoption Gilmore. Lisa helped us with the meet and greets between our current dog Max both times, and also helped bring her from VA to MD because Max doesn't travel well. She did our interviews and helped us with all our paperwork. We honestly wouldn't have been able to do this adoption without her hard work and support and help. We had to wait for our adoption for a while because Gilmore had to go through heartworm treatment. She was cared for by two wonderful fosters Mikaela and Leah and when she finally came home she was a true joy. She is a delight to our family and is a wonderful companion to our dog Max who was so sad when he lost his brother. We couldn't be happier with the process of adoption with OPH and highly recommend them to anyone looking to bring a dog into their homes.
Hope, we are beyond thrilled that you have found another family member with OPH. Lisa is one of our valued volunteers and we greatly appreciate all that she does for the dogs!

OPH helped me find my families' perfect dog. We had met a couple of OPH's dogs via my co-worker and OPH volunteer, Shannon Albert. It was great that since we're neighbors, my kids could meet a lot of her dogs and get the opportunity to play with a lot of puppies!!! But it was never the right time for us...
Once I knew my kids were old enough, and after about 1,000,000 promises and begging, I new this latest group of holiday puppies would be my Christmas miracle.
I love the way OPH has foster homes for these dogs, and they're not in cold shelters, where they could be euthanized. I love the warmth and companionship they get to share with their foster owners, who take great care of them while in their family.
I love that when we adopted our dog, he already had most of his shots, was microchipped, and had a whole file dedicated to what to expect next, and how to be successful raising a new puppy.
The pre-adoption dedication OPH has to its clients as well as their follow up and care is amazing. I would recommend this organization to anyone and everyone who is looking for a new pet.
Rescued IS my favorite breed, and they made is such and amazing experience!!!!
Lauren, We are grateful to your and your dedication to not only finding the right dog for your family, but for ensuring that your family was ready for a puppy. Shannon is a wonderful foster mom and we will miss her when she moves away!

It was really a great experience going to the adoption process from OPH. It was quick and straight forward. They are very honest and provide as much info about their dogs. We would strongly recommend adopting or fostering dogs from this organization.
Thank you for the kind comments! We strive to be open and honest with all of our adopters.
OPH made the adoption process super easy! The quick turnaround time after applying was the best part, which ensured I wouldn't miss out on finding the dog of my dreams. My adoption coordinator, Lee, was extremely quick with communicating any questions I had about individual dogs and the adoption process as a whole. Overall, an amazing organization - would highly recommend!
Our Adoption Coordination team, including Lee, is the best! They work so hard to get all applications done quickly. Thank you for the comments!
If I could adopt 100s of dogs from OPH I would. I was looking for a outgoing and lovable dog, that would fit my lifestyle. Considering I had a spunky JRT, it wasn't a easy search. I had looked and looked for months and did research on rescues, and OPH was a perfect fit. The process was very quick, and reassuring knowing that the pups were in a foster home. Upon meeting my girl Nova, I knew she was the one. Her fosters were lovely people, and let me know the ins and outs of my girl. In the near future, I will be adopting another companion for my home and I know OPH will do their best to help me! I highly recommend choosing them if you're looking to add to your family :)
Leah, We are proud to have helped you and Nova find each other. We wish you years of happiness together!
After deciding I wanted to adopt a dog, I began looking thoroughly for adoption agencies that would work for me and my lifestyle. I took this process very seriously, since I have wanted a dog for about five years and had volunteered at shelters in the past. It was very important to me that I found an adoption agency that provided the dogs with an opportunity to live in a foster home so that the temperament and personality of the dog in a "home" setting was known. OPH worked with me over two months time while I was travelling to get me preapproved for adoption and helped me set up my meet and greet when I returned home. My dog's foster mom was absolutely amazing and was able to give me detailed information about my pup and his training, personality, disposition, and health. OPH kept in mind my wants and needs in my new best friend throughout the process to make sure I didn't just get a dog but that I got the right dog for me and my lifestyle. So now I have a little lovable, medium energy, outdoorsy, and spunky pup at home to love a lot and hike with and it's all thanks to OPH! He was fully ready to come home with all his shots, neuter, and flea/tick and heartworm. I was provided many resources after adoption to help care for my new pup. I am very satisfied with my experience with OPH.
Thank you for all the kind words! We strive to find the best home possible for both parties - adopter and dog. We take to heart what each adopter is looking for and their lifestyle. Best wishes for a long and happy life together!
We had such a wonderful experience with Operation Paws for Homes! I had been working with other rescues and kept being disappointed. As soon as I contacted OPH everything went smoothly and everyone I worked with was great. I highly recommend this organization if you are looking to rescue a dog. You will not be disappointed! Also, the care and help keeps going after you have received your dog. You are never alone!
We love our adopters and feel like they are part of our family too!
We adopted our little Pepper Girl (Formerly Marcie) on June 9, 2017. Her foster mom Tracey was wonderful and it really shows with Pepper as to how much time and effort Tracy took with those sweet little ones until they could find their fur-ever home. Pepper is so smart and a good girl. OPH was great from start to finish. I will forever be grateful to OPH and Tracy for bringing us together with Pepper Girl.
I love that OPH has fosters to help take care of the dogs/puppies/cats until they can find their fur-ever home.
Our fosters are the life-line of OPH and Tracy is one of the best! Marcie certainly hit the jackpot with you as her new family!
OPH is a great nonprofit that gives pets an opportunity to have loving fur-ever homes! I adopted my sweet baby Nani(formerly schnapps) from OPH and she has been nothing short of a blessing! The whole adopting experience has been pleasant. OPH ensures the pets will be loved and well taken care of.
Nani is so lucky to have you as her family! We are blessed to have adopters like you.
We are recent puppy parents to our darling Copper who came to us through Operation Paws for Homes. Not only was our initial contact with their adoption agent pleasant and welcoming, but with the foster family too. We could tell after the first day we had our new pup how much time and effort went into training him at their home and we appreciate that so incredibly much. Our foster family was more than easy going with their schedule to accommodate our visit and helpful with information and supplies to get us through the transition. This organization has been helpful from start to finish and I am happy to know the money spent goes to helping more animals who need homes. I highly recommend them to anyone seeking to add a furry family member.
Thank you for the kind words! We strive to help our foster families learn and grow as they save more lives. Your pup will have the best life possible with you!
My friend fosters for OPH and has always talked highly of this organization. Not long ago, she took in two little brothers (very young chihuahua mixes) and immediately started sending me pictures. She's obviously aware of my fondness for Chihuahuas. Within a few weeks my boyfriend and I were adopting them. The process was easy but thorough and I highly recommend this organization. They were wonderful. They also helped us to find two of the most adorable little men we could ever ask for. I am forever grateful.
We love recommendations and when a foster recommends a friend to adopt, we take that seriously! Thank you for taking in these sweet pups!
After doing a lot of research on various rescues, we recently adopted from OPH. They asked for three references and also spoke to my Vet. They did a phone interview with me where we discussed their organization, their policies, my experience as a pet owner, what I was looking for in a dog, etc... I felt that they were thorough in trying to make sure that the dog would be a good fit for us and also that we were going to be good owners (pet parents). A lot of other rescues had requirements that I felt were extreme or they just didn't respond back to me. OPH was very organized, they followed up with all my inquiries and questions promptly. I like that they rescue all kinds of dogs and all ages. They are very dedicated to what they do. They have a good website and Facebook page. After you adopt they encourage you to join a private Facebook page where you can meet and share with other adopters and the fosters. I would definitely recommend OPH.
Thank you for the kind words! We try to be as efficient and thorough as possible with our adopters, but carefully screen as well. We are glad that the process was easy for you and happy to have you as one of our adoptive family!
Our experience with Operation Paws for Home was fantastic. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. I love that our dog had been fostered for 3 weeks with a family who had kids, dogs, and cats so we felt that he was already fully vetted before we got him.
Foster homes are vital in helping these dogs find good homes. We are grateful for your kind words.
I adopted Arrow from OPH last weekend and had such a great experience! His foster dad, Scott, was so great and sent pictures and updates while we were waiting to bring him home. I love that OPH dogs live with fosters so you can see how they are in home environments. Mindy handled my adoption process and was so nice and helpful. She followed up to make sure we were all set a few days ago and made sure I had resources before I picked him up. She was completely honest about the dogs I inquired about. I could tell that they really wanted their dogs to go to their forever homes. I would recommend OPH to anyone looking to adopt in the area!
Arrow looks so happy! We are grateful that he's in such a wonderful home. Our volunteers are here to help and our website is full of great information as well!
