I have been involved in Operation Paws for Homes since the beginning of the organization's creation. In four short years, we have grown from a small rescue organization to one of the largest in the Mid-Atlantic region. In that time, we have saved thousands of dogs from a horrible fate. I will never forget my first experience in entering a shelter in the rural south. The shelter was located next to a landfill and we had entered the facility right after a large number of dogs were put down. It was so quiet and still. When we looked into the cages of the remaining dogs, you could see the fear in their eyes. It was enough to break your heart. I knew then that something had to be done.

In addition to saving dogs, we have always believed that the problem of pet overpopulation would not be solved by simply saving dogs from shelters. The problem is much deeper. As a result, we started OPH with the mindset that we would partner with our shelters and provide much needed supplies and support. To date, I always feel like the support and hope we bring to shelters has transformed our organization into a rescue that separates us from other organizations. We also partner with other organizations in the ‘rescue world’ to educate and work together to stop the cycle of unwanted pets finding themselves in shelters with little to no chance of a forever home. We are always looking for additional volunteers who would like to engage in this outreach effort.

Something changes when our volunteers visit the shelters we partner with. In addition to saving many dogs and gaining a deeper understanding of where they come from, we also inspire the shelter staff. They know that we will take this journey together.
