Background

On any given night in the United States, there are 643,047 people experiencing homelessness. Although many are adults, there are teenagers and children living without a home. 12% of people who find themselves homeless and below the poverty line are veterans. We need to help these people, and these nonprofits and charities help get these homeless people off the streets and back on their feet.

While unemployment rates remain low, more and more people are being forced into homelessness and onto the streets. These poor people need shelter, but beyond a place to sleep, these families are faced with hunger and danger while living on the streets. We need housing for the homeless.

Nonprofits play an important role in helping the homeless, especially homeless families. They may offer services such as job training or rehabilitation. They may offer daycare to enable parents to go looking for jobs or they may even have employment services that help connect employers with these people. Some nonprofits even refurbish old homes for homeless families to temporarily live in.

But while shelters and ministries can provide safety and a place to sleep, they still need your help to make it all possible. Volunteer or donate to a homeless shelter near you or any other charity for the homeless and help get a person off the streets, out of poverty, and on their way to a functional life.
