Review for Operation Paws for Homes, N.Chesterfield, VA, USA
We recently adopted a very sweet dog from Operation Paws for Homes and have had an awful experience with them. During her first vet appointment, which was within 5 days of her adoption, we discovered that she had an eye infection, ear infection and something wrong with her stomach. She ended up needing surgery within the first 10 days that we owned her, which was a result of the lack of care she received while with Operation Paws for Homes. We believe that they either knowingly sold us a sick dog or didn't pay enough attention to her to realize that she was sick while in their care. It's been a very expensive process, but she is now recovering from her surgery and doing well. Unfortunately, this organization has refused to take any accountability and has declined to assist with her medical costs. The Director that we spoke with was unprofessional, lacked any empathy and was extremely dismissive. I would not recommend adopting through OPH.
It is unfortunate that Meghan - a first time dog owner - had the experience she did. The dog in question, Josie, came from a rural shelter in South Carolina. The adopter received the standard adoption information throughout the process. Josie received the customary care that is provided to all dogs in our care. After adoption, Meghan contacted us with a concern that Josie had tested positive for worms in the shelter and had not been properly treated by the rescue. What Meghan missed was, her personal vet did a fecal exam and confirmed that sweet Josie did not have worms. Meghan was misinformed by her vet regarding the need for surgery. An unnecessary surgery was performed, and we can understand that Meghan is upset about this. In the end, we attempted to help Meghan - several volunteers spent a great deal of time talking to her. Unfortunately, it was not received with open ears. When we spoke with Meghan about fundraising for the surgery for Josie (before we learned that it was an unnecessary surgery), Meghan refused our offer of assistance. We have had several wonderful adopters - and for this we are truly thankful. We cannot make everyone happy. Here, despite multiple volunteers trying to help Meghan - emotions won out and we were unable to assist her.
