Review for Operation Paws for Homes, N.Chesterfield, VA, USA
I have been involved with OPH for 12+ years and have watched the organization grow. I am proud of the way 'we' continually tweak our processes, protocols, social media, advertising and beyond based on the feedback received and animal welfare needs. If we encounter an issue, it is addressed, discussed and, if possible, a change is made for the benefit of those animals waiting for rescue. Rescue work is difficult, time consuming and sometimes isolating for an organization that spans many states but OPH finds a way to draw us all together as a family over cyberspace, over the miles while remaining united in our mission. Thank you, Operation Paws for Homes, for being the incredible rescue that 'we' are !
Review for Operation Paws for Homes, N.Chesterfield, VA, USA
I got involved with OPH after my daughter's dog suffered an embolism following heartworm treatment. The rescue was beside us the entire time and the dog survived and is now healthy and happy. They gave us emotional support, medical direction and financial assistance. It was a very, very scary time as Woodley spent 3 days in an emergency hospital fighting to breathe on his own. After his release and recovery, I felt a need to give back to this organization which had been more than helpful to us.
I am now the heartworm coordinator for the rescue. We, as a rescue, do not turn away heartworm positive dogs like many other rescues do. We believe every dog should have a chance at a good life. We pretreat our dogs, treat them and follow up closely with them after treatment. They stay with a foster for two weeks after treatment to stabilize - then they can go to their forever home.
I have learned about heartworm disease to the point where I feel very comfortable explaining it, its treatment, and most importantly, the ability to prevent the disease to anyone. My other daughter has since adopted a dog from OPH - a heartworm positive dog. She is a beautiful animal, treated and now on her way to a healthy, happy life. Both of my daughters' dogs may not have been rescued were it not for OPH - and with heartworm disease, they both would have died.
Since coming on board with OPH (June, 2012), my eyes have been opened to the world of rescue and to the horrendous world of overpopulated shelters. I read, with shielded eyes, the stories connected with high kill shelters, puppy mills, dog fighting and become more and more determined to make a difference in the lives of these innocent sweet beings. Yes, it's an angry feeling - reading these stories - but I know I can help make a difference if I keep pushing on.
If I could financially survive without working, I would devote almost all of my time to this rescue. It is truly an amazing, caring group of volunteers - all volunteers - with hearts of gold.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
I cannot think of anything I would change other than making the day longer and recruiting more volunteers so we all could do that much more for the animals. We continue to work on organizing and reorganizing, delegating responsibilities, expanding public awareness and communicating efficiently.
