Charlotte Nonprofits and Charities

Since moving to Charlotte five years ago, I have consistently been impressed by Lift Up Carolinas: the work that the organization does and the commitment, friendliness, and professionalism of the many volunteers who run it. The Check Hunger program, which provides food support to low income children and families through mobile food pantries and weekend backpacks, and the Gear Up Carolinas effort which provides new school clothing—including uniforms—to school children identified by school counselors, are significant contributors to helping children and families succeed. With only three paid staff, Lift Up Carolinas is also very efficiently run. Contributions largely go to their programs, not overhead, a critical component for me in deciding where to donate.

LAMB Foundation of NC, Inc. has allowed me to support interactive learning experiences with my students with speech language disorders. A special education teacher and I collaborated to create a garden with our students. The students loved planting, then watching the vegetables grow. This experience provided an excellent opportunity to target vocabulary, sequencing, social interaction, and following directions.

My job ended as a result of moving out of Charlotte in 2009 for a family situation. I was not able to find work when I got to the location. I returned to Charlotte briefly to move again for another family situation in another city. I was out of work here. I returned to Charlotte. From the role playing activities I learned how to present myself better. Jacob's ladder gave me confidence. I did get a part time survival job which has made a difference

The support of the ladies at The Mommies Network has kept this mom sane since joining the organization in 2007. During difficult times like losing my dad to liver cancer in 2009 and losing my mom to lung cancer in 2014, I could always depend on the moms of TMN to be there for me. I have developed long lasting friendships that I cherish continuously. The changes that TMN has made over the years have been for the betterment of the members and to help support more moms all over the US. I am proud to be a volunteer and senior team member with an organization that cares so much about its members.

ROOM is a group of compassionate individuals who go above and beyond to help meet the basic needs, along with emotional, developmental, and spiritual needs, of orphaned and vulnerable children in the most poverty-stricken areas of Honduras, India and Nepal. I am proud to support their efforts and grateful for everything they do to help children in need.

I did volunteer hours with them training clients. It was a lot of fun, the clients asked lots of questions and were fully engaged. I am hoping to volunteer more over the next summer. Thanks!

When people think of Goodwill, they often think of a great place to shop for inexpensive treasures or the perfect place to donate their unwanted items... what most don't realize is the tremendous impact Goodwill Industries of The Southern Piedmont is making in our community. Goodwill is providing top-notch job training for those in need for many industries from construction to banking and changing lives not only of the individuals trained, but of their families as well. I’ve been personally brought to tears at Goodwill graduation ceremonies watching the pride of these Goodwill trainies as they celebrate their accomplishments. Work gives a human being a place in our community and self-worth. Belief and hope in a better tomorrow… This is truly what Goodwill is providing on daily basis. I have been involved with this beautiful organization since it's inception in 2004. The work before that date was known as Health Realization whose founder, the late Roger C. Mills, PhD, gained the support of foundations so that trainings and consultations might reach people living in disadvantaged communities. These projects produced amazing results including several awards and the book "Modello". The mission of the Center for Sustainable Change is to teach families, educators and communities how to engage innate resilience. I deeply respect the Center and feel that it will have a pivotal role in preventing violence in the schools and among youth.

My name is Angela Edwards 60 years old with dreams still wrapped up in me.I have so many mistakes in my life where I know I should be further along in my life.Then one day about 6 years ago I found this flier Healing Vine Harbor I went to the workshop a couple of times then I stopped.In 2018 my father died I needed someone I could talk to but most of all I needed a new direction in my life to put me were I need to be that is to be whole .My dad left a home two cars I need help we transferring things over. It's been along time since I can say I'm saving money in the credit Union Healing Harbor started me out with 250.00 no one ever showed me so much love except my family which most are gone now.If your serious in being whole with confidence to move up and out of poverty. I have donated to this charity for years and did some volunteer computer work for them this year. I personally visited the mission at <br>Christmas this year and witnessed the number of families getting toys <br>for there children . Tyler's Mission was the Gaston County representative for the TOYS FOR TOTS program this year and has worked with the Marines for the past few years. <br> I have watch Tyler's Mom pull food from her own freezer to feed families who show up at the house needing food. <br>I myself have taken food to stock so that there is food to take to a needy family or to be given to a family that shows up for help. <br>Never in the 13 years I have known this child and his family have I witness anything underhanded, no scams, etc. Yes, someone who <br>writes or knows about writing grants is needed but for now this mission is being run by donations only. Most of the donations come from family, friends, and volunteers. <br>

this has been a very very horrible experience for me and my child! from the beginning to now that my time is coming to and end! this has really been a very awful experience for my family! when you k lw you're being violated and your force to deal with things just to have a place to live! they take advantage of families situations! where they think they are helping they truly hurting and causing major set backs! so much concerns and safety of my family has been ignored for yes! where my family has qualified for curtain services, we have been denied or just shut out from! since I've been in keeping families together I get denied services from other places because we are in this program, yet when it comes to getting the rue service my family needs and not just what ppl sit a a table and discuss is the right decision for my family! we still in the same situation.program is due to end for my family this year and everything I say gets over looked! like today! my family is in need of food and personal items! I was given a 25 dollar gift card and the prices of food is very high! smh! I truly think that this program needs to be lolled into! because how is it that some families can get taken shopping for exact needs and I just have to take whatever er they thi k is fit for my family! not understanding how companies aren't held accountable

I volunteered with the Urban Ministry Center to help organize and serve breakfast to some of Charlotte's homeless neighbors. My experience there was wonderful and the folks at the Urban Ministry Center are angels for the work they do. <br> <br>I felt extremely safe, comfortable helping out and felt like I was doing a real service to my community while I was there. <br> <br>The UMC's mission is one unlike any other nonprofit I've ever been a part of. They aren't just a resource for homeless folks in Charlotte, they are committed to permanently ending homelessness for those that are most at risk. It's a bold mission that they are succeeding at. <br> <br>The organization is extremely organized, focused and run by people who are as talented as they are compassionate. I can't wait to become even more involved in the future.

My husband was sent to Carolina Rehab for a spine problem after surgery. I was at a loss where <br>to stay. I went to a hotel and it was expensive, noisy and I didn't even feel safe. A nurse told me <br>about the Hospitality House . I was blessed to be able to get in. I have stayed here three weeks. <br>Not only did I enjoy the safety and comfort of the Hospitality House but I was also able to save gas <br>money as I was able to walk right to the rehab center. <br>Often we had food donated by volunteers or someone working in the house. It was so nice to <br>come in and have a hot meal after staying at the hospital all day. <br>I would totally recommend the Hospitality House to anyone needing houses while staying with <br>someone in the hospital. <br>I am very thankful that I have had the opportunity to get to know the staff and people staying at <br>the Hospitality House. Mr. Clark's allegations are an attempt to destroy the name of our organization which has been dormant for several years because of the stagnant economy. Our attempt at assisting pregnancy centers was in response to being asked to deviate from our core goal of international humanitarian projects of which we would gladly furnish to those interested, with the economic downturn in 2008. We had unfortunate dealings with three such pregnancy centers. <br> <br>Hands Across the Sea originated as a project of Rotary International and was taken to the next level as a tax exempt organization to provides medical supplies, equipment, training, and support for projects of the national Guard International Bureau State Partnership Program, in which we have participated in close to a hundred different projects, mainly in Eastern Europe, Central and South American and the last of which was the earthquake in Haiti, which was the largest and most successful undertaking. In Haiti we were the first non-profit to begin aid shipment of medicine, food and water via airplane into an air strip in Penon, Haiti, long before any government aid arrived. We shipped an Ambulance full of medical supplies and a semi-tractor trailer donated by Old Dominion Freight which we shipped by barge from Florida and in total were responsible for more about 15 deliveries during the first month following the quake. <br> <br>The disputes with the three pregnancy centers out of the nine centers we aided, evolved out of a misunderstanding wherein the centers wanted ultrasound systems which normally sell for upward of $25,000, for $5000. The only systems available for that money were older systems which we would have normally sent via military transport to third world countries free of charge had the economy been better. As the technology had evolved from 2D systems to 3D and 4D systems, $5000 would only deliver these older machines which we disclosed early on when inquiries were made. We did refund the money paid from one center because their request for a refund was an immediate request. The other two requests came after a long period of time (one was a year after the purchase), which our board agreed was an unwarranted request. One of the unit being disputer was sold with more than the usual "full-disclosure" regarding the aged equipment in that several features available on newer machines did not work and in fact were not even available for add-on upgrading. That particular system was only good for imaging purposes and was not compatible with any software package. The service Center had recently gone through the imaging part of the system and certified the image capabilities as being in good working order. After paying the shipping fees of $500, there was no way we were about to provide a refund because we provided the full disclosure in advance.

i have been in an abusive marriage for 4 years. I stayed because i had no money, he theartened my family and kids. I finally got the courage to leave. The shelter i am in is 45 days.Please help,me.

Case manager Brooke Grasso was wonderful. She is knowledgeable, compassionate and patient. I would say the world would be better with more people like Brooke Grasso. I would give my highest recommendation to Brooke and MedAssist.

B helpful love does an amazing jobs of helping those in needs by actually talking and interacting with them. Our CEO goes above and beyond to talk to homeless and figure our ways to farther assist them. Our senior citizen clients enjoy our calls just to check on them. Most of them are widowers and lonely. My Little Light Foundation has been working hard with local hospitals to bring families with children suffering from cancer much needed financial hope.

Words cannot express how grateful I am for Father's United Inc. When I thought I was at the end of my rope with nowhere to turn, Father's United Inc. was there. They reassured me I was not alone and helped me win my rights. Father's United Inc. has changed our lives forever. I went from not being able to see my child at all to now having joint custody. I went from feeling lost, discouraged and angry to now everyday is my greatest day. Thank you Fathers United Inc. <br><br><br>

I recently started volunteering for ANSWER and I have been so impressed with every step of the process, from the volunteer orientation to all of the people involved in the organization. This nonprofit is almost completely volunteer-run but every volunteer takes their work seriously and is committed to making a difference. The organization awards scholarships to moms, but they also do so much more. They provide their scholarship recipients with a support system and a mentor to navigate obstacles and help them achieve their goals.

Rebuilding Paradise is the Parent org for Rice N Beans a homeless outreach in Charlotte NC. They are caring for the underserved on the street. They feed, cloth and distribute personal care items to approx 150 people a week. They are really all about the restoring dignity in the lives of the hurting people they serve. I love partnering with them as they have been doing this for almost 7 years and are consistent every Tuesday night rain or shine they are helping people.

Assistance League of Charlotte is a dynamic organization of men and women joined together to help disadvantaged children. Their slogan “ we feed, we clothe, we mentor, we educate” reflects the realization that children need help in many ways and at each stage of their lives. The Thrift Shop at 3405 South Tryon, the main source of income, is a true treasure chest where people shop for bargains because they enjoy the “hunt for the unusual” or a place to fill the needs of those with limited funds. A friendly place where shoppers and workers alike know they are doing good for their community. I am proud to be a member and urge you to check out our our store, our causes, our people and join us - there is a lot of work that still needs to be done.
