Mission: Legal services of southern piedmont (lssp) provides legal assistance in civil matters to low-income persons in the charlotte area and west-central north carolina. Our mission is to provide a full measure of justice for those in need.
Programs: Family support and health care programduring fy 2017 this program made a significant difference in the lives of low-income clients. The program served 329 clients with medicaid and health related matters and 325 clients with social security and other benefits matters. The program obtained or preserved medicaid, social security, ssi, work first family assistance or food stamp benefits for a total value of almost $3. 1 million in benefits. The program also continued a class action case, challenging the lack of due process protection for medicaid recipients when services are denied, reduced or terminated and coordinated health care navigation activities relating to the affordable care act.
immigrant justice programduring fy 2017 this program made a significant difference in the lives of low-income clients, specifically immigrants. The program provided advice and obtained or enforced 228 domestic violence protective orders, child custody and child support orders. The program also provided advice, obtained legal immigration status and prepared immigration paperwork for 173 clients, as well as legal screenings in immigration court form nearly 1,000 adults and children.
consumer protection and veterans programduring fy 2017 this program made a significant difference in the lives of low-income clients. The program offered legal advice and resolved disputes for 285 clients with housing issues. The program also assisted 87 veterans with advice or representation for va benefits
