Working with FISH of Sanibel-Captiva has been an incredible experience for our team. The dedication and compassionate service they offer to the local community is truly unmatched.
My family began vacationing on Sanibel before the causeway. Eventually my parents built a small home in Chateaux Sur Mer. We all have loved Sanibel for generations, and though we no longer own a home there, we follow the news pretty carefully. We are so proud of the work and volunteerism that F.I.S.H
provides for All. We continue to financially support their good work.

FISH is a good organization that helps so many people on Sanibel, Captiva and in Fort Myers, Cape Coral and beyond. I've done some community service volunteering with them, and it's always fun with super nice people. It feels good to give back.

FISH helped me and my mom after the hurricane with food and water and then helped with rent since we had to pay so much money to fix our house.
My personal story is volunteering at FISH in many capacities to support the people who live and work on the islands is Sanibel and Captiva. Knowing that I can donate my time to support my community is what makes a difference and that’s what FISH is all about - making a difference and bringing resources to those in need.
FISH is a very well-run, and lean organization. The many services/programs it offers to our community (too many to list) is truly outstanding. It has played (and is playing) a key, lead role in our island's recovery, not only related to Hurricane Ian, but also with other events like COVID and Red Tide.
Volunteering with FISH is both meaningful and FUN! From stocking the food pantry, to helping distribute holiday related items, to being a helper at a LIVE web cooking event, to distributing medical equipment, to helping out at fundraisers, there really are tasks for everyone's area of interest/expertise.
This is a group of people that exists to help others. The ”helping” part has evolved since Hurricane Ian devastated our island. The lean but energetic FISH staff still provides the same social services (food pantry, caring for the elderly, counseling, etc) as before Ian. But has dramatically augmented the basics with assistance in rebuilding, providing furniture and appliances and developing a more resilient service base and facilities for the future! Clientele has changed dramatically but helping others is still the banner! Impressive staff!
F.I.S.H has been a constant helping presence that i first experienced after hurricane Ian but that has been a continuation of decades providing assistance both material and guidance to Sanibel. As we rebuilt our residence we recieved donated sinks and some other materials to restore our place from its remaining bones. They also provided some groceries that were a help while traveling back to the mainland was less than convenient Their staff are knowledgeabke and friendly. I have been happy to contribute items that turned out to be extra that others may use. F.I.S.H. is an exceptional organization and feels as integral to Sanibel as our beautiful natural vegetation. Thank you F.I.S.H. and volunteers!
Having worked in the food pantry prior to the hurricane, I saw first hand the difference this service made with so many lower income island workers and residents. They were truly grateful. Also, FISH quickly re-established itself in the days following hurricane Ian providing food and cleaning supplies in a parking lot of their unusable building…in unbearable heat and bugs.

I have had over six months of volunteer experience helping in the Food Pantry. I have found the staff incredibly professional, efficient, caring and especially compassionate in working with those in need of food, medical assistance, and senior support services, among other programs. I am proud to be associated with this organization.
My wife and I have been involved with FISH for more than 20 years as volunteers, as a client and donor. The FISH organization has a small, but professional and caring staff. The leadership of FISH is dedicated and is true to their mission of "Neighbors Helping Neighbors. Our volunteer experience has connected us with so many neighbors and those who work on the islands. We have heard the stories of those FISH has assisted and their appreciation. However, we feel we have received more than we have ever given. We thank FISH for the opportunity for us to give back. We fully support their mission and wide range of social services.
Fish has helped one of my employees so much! He lives in a trailer and doesn't have much but he has been able to Keep food on the table and get things him and his family needs like school supplies, towels, blankets and pillows and even a bike! Everyone there is amazing and nice and so helpful. From the Director of Operations to the volunteers I LOVE F.I.S.H.! Thanks for what you do for the Islanders and our community!

As Data Resource Lead for our local United Way 211, we refer many folks to FISH. We follow up with all callers to determine if the resource was helpful. For FISH of Sanibel-Captiva, our callers needs are typically met. I have learned that even if it is something they do not do, they will get the individual or family to the program/services that can assist them. I love FISH of Sanibel-Captiva!
I can’t say enough good things about F.I.S.H and their employees/volunteers.. From the moment I met them, they were responsive, thoughtful, and accommodating. The impact of their work is exceptional, and it truly shows in our island community. They simply go above and beyond to ensure those in need feel heard and cared for. 5 stars all the way!
I have been visiting Sanibel for 50+ years and working here on the Island as a Banker for 30+ years. During this time, I have always appreciated the work done by FISH, but was truly amazed to see how the staff at FISH stepped up to the Island's rebuilding efforts after Hurricane Ian. FISH even further evolved as the Center of the Island's Recovery Efforts. Maria, Manuella and the rest of the crew were there when people needed them most. Working long hours, day after day, in record hot conditions. Maria, Manuella and Emery are also a big part of the Sanibel Captiva Islands Rotary Disaster Relief Efforts. They are shining examples of the "Service above Self" motto. This is the "mind-set" that is helping to keep the Sanibel and Captiva Islands Community - Good Neighbor focus alive and well..:)
Great people with good morals. This was a great way for me to get my school volunteer hours. 5 stars any day
My husband and I were about 2 months from our daughter being born and just my luck I was having her at the very end of August, which is our off-season on the islands. This is the time of year when your income is literally cut anywhere from a half to a quarter of what you were making previously. Of course, the name of the game is to save during season, however with all the costs a new baby can bring you can do everything right and still find yourself behind. A local islander told me about the FISH organization. The help they provided turned two panicked & stressed out soon to be parents into people who actually were able to enjoy the beauty of their first child being born without constantly worrying about bills and rent! It was amazing to have that extent of help. Diapers, formula, & food were provided along with a month of rent! The island coming together to take care of each other is what makes it such a special place to live and work!

My husband and I both simultaneously lost our jobs within the same week. We were devastated, not to mention our ten year old out of school with a thousand questions. We both have been residents and workers on Sanibel Island for over 20 years. We remembered that F.I.S.H did help us years ago when we were pregnant and it was off season. They provided us with diapers and all kinds of other stuff to help out. For us Island workers off season can really be a trying time financially. However F.I.S.H saw us through that difficult time. We hoped they might help us through this as well. We contacted a lovely women Nitza. She was incredibly patient and understanding with what we needed to do to receive the help they provide. Within a weeks time they had covered two months of rent! The two hardest months to get through mind you. Without the help of FISH we most definitely would be in a much different situation right now. The piece of mind their help gave us was priceless.
FISH was very helpful in providing food, ice, cleaning supplies and comfort in the days, weeks and months after September 28, 2022 when Hurricane Ian destroyed much on Sanibel Island. We had no water, power and for two weeks post-hurricane- no access by road to the island. They continue to this day to meet the urgent and changing needs of the community many months later with the food supplies and have added replacement items for hurricane lost possessions- including new furniture, beds, grills, cabinets, windows, cleaning supplies. Community service of the highest level!
FISH is an awesome non profit servicing Sanibel, Captiva, and Ft. Myers. They have been a blessing especially with the aftermath of Hurricane Ian. They have helped anyone who needs assistance in all areas: food, supplies for cleanup and rebuilding, furniture, bills, rent, etc. I have been a volunteer for over ten years and have seen the impact that FISH has on everyone.
I cannot say enough about F.I.S.H. of Sanibel-Captiva! This organization stepped up to the plate early on after Hurricane Ian to provide assistance to island residents. Personally, we did not have insurance so everything related to restoring our home was on us. It helped us so much to be able to take advantage of the food pantry, cleaning supplies, furniture, linens and other many items. F.I.S.H. Provided us with a 40 sheets of drywall, a TV stand, small dresser, king mattress, pillows, queen and king bed linens, lamps, kitchen supplies. We have always been treated with kindness and compassion by all of the employees and volunteers. They do a great job of keeping the public informed about what programs are available via Facebook.
FISH has always been there for the last 7 years of my time as a resident on Sanibel! I am particularly grateful for the food pantry as well as the fresh produce I received weekly leftover from the Sanibel Farmer’s Market, and now weekly bags of fresh produce.
F.I S.H. was vital for me before Hurricane Ian through the Food Pantry on Sanibel.
When my lease for an affordable housing apartment on Sanibel was terminated without notice so I became homeless ~4 months after the hurricane, F.I.S H. became invaluable to me. They gave me a much needed VISA card I used for groceries and paid my auto insurance premiums for several months.
Even now, while the Food Pantry on Sanibel lacks electricity and water, their dedicated volunteers are on site five days a week, providing a lifeline to many of us.
F.I.S.H. of Sanibel and Captiva is a wonderful non-profit organization that has distributed drywall, mattresses, and even a HEPA air filter. They are in the business of helping people and are much appreciated.
My entire world has been turned upside down since the onset of the Hurricane. FISH has provided the island community with so many resources post storm. The first sign of hope I received was when I received water and ice from their location when I did not know what was open on the island. Something as small as water and ice was invaluable when I tried to go back to what was left of my home.
I am a volunteer at FISH. This organization is so well run. From the well stocked Food Pantry to other programs it is amazing to see how they can add value to clients life’s. Volunteering for FISH gives me a purpose besides my full time job. The staff is wonderful, always caring and non judgmental. Not every single Sanibel resident is wealthy and it is comforting to know that FISH is there to help. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO.
F.I.S.H. has provided me with nutritious food to regain my strength and health during 3 years of cancer ,a Pancreatectomy and splenectomy.
I greatly appreciate their support and positivity during my recovery.
Fish has helped me in my time of need when I reach out to them. They didn’t hesitate they just helped!! Thanks fish , best nonprofit !!
I have found the staff to be very caring and the whole agency has a welcoming attitude for everyone. The pantry is well run and often has fresh produce of high quality.
I have volunteered for over 4 months, in various positions, am a full time Sanibel Island Resident. Professional, respected and found communication skills great. The staff have similar purpose and skills addressed.
Very happy with the services at FISH, it is a great organization giving and helping clients in need. I truly appreciate all the help. Thank you so much.
FISH fills important gaps in our community by providing much needed services like the food pantry, senior check in calls, medical equipment for people with living disabilities and emergency response. They are an amazing support which makes caring for my elderly parents at home as they age in place possible.
Fish has always been there for me, no matter what. Hurricanes, Flood, medical and dental help, not counting the Food pantry, they have helped me so much. And I thank you.
If it weren't for FISH I wouldn't be hear to tell you all what a wonderful place this is. I am a 58 year old woman with just a few medical issues, after my first surgery FISH stepped up and helped me with food, 3 months of rent money and helped me pay the balance off. and if it weren't for the food pantry I couldn't still live on Captiva. I could go on but it would take all day, but thank god for FISH and all of the wonderful volunteers. FABIENNE HEGEDUS. THANK YOU.
Me siento muy agradecida con FISH por todo lo que me ha ayudado ami familia y en momentos dificiles. Me siento feliz.
Since I retired on the island, I have appreciated the help with groceries from time to time. When I least expect it, a "Smile Box" shows up at my door . I jump with joy !
I am both a donor and a volunteer. F.I.S.H is an incredible local social services organization. I attest to the following F.I.S.H. definition of purpose:
"For nearly 40 years, FISH has been the social service organization on Sanibel and Captiva. Started in island residents’ kitchens and out of their cars, F.I.S.H. has continued to grow to meet the demands of our community thanks to the generosity of our donors and volunteers. We are proud to say that 92% of every dollar spent goes directly to our programs and services. Our donors and volunteers are changing lives every day. "
Bob Williams
FISH of Sanibel-Captiva is a well organized, caring, loving, sharing organization
that helps those who need assistance in several ways. FISH was able to secure
COVID-19 vaccines for residents and enlisted the help of many volunteers on the islands to do so. Donations to FISH are so appreciated and welcomed in so many ways by all the residents. It makes me feel good to donate to this very
important organization
Being a volunteer at F.I.S.H. is rewarding because you know you are making a real difference in people's lives.
From the self-less employees ( giving abundantly above and beyond of their time, off hours as well) to the magnificent volunteers the entire organization brings joy and encouragement to all as it meets the various needs of the Sanibel community...(clients served are truly uplifted in life with their FISH experience)
F.I.S.H. has been a Godsend through the pandemic. Many users of F.I.S.H. have had even more hardship over the last 1 1/2 years. F.I.S.H. has responded with focused giving from food to social services to maintaining high spirits in homebound to providing COVID vaccines to the community, and much more. All with smiles on their faces !
As a volunteer I am amazed at all that F.I.S.H. does for people who love and/or work on Sanibel-a FANTASTIC group to work with !
I volunteer at fish. They go over and above to help those neighbors in need. The food bank and Back Pack programs help provide food for families. They help the elderly with transportation and visits. The employees are always pleasant and so helpful. FISH of SanCap has and continues to provide great services to so many !
I received a Smile Box and it was so thoughtful! Each item was so detailed and of such a high quality , you can tell F.I.S.H. cares. Thank you for being such an amazing organization and keeping me smiling throughout the months.
The backpack program has been a huge hit with my kids. It gives them the sense of independence in making small meals and snacks on their own. It has been a tremendous help to our family during these unstable times. Thank you FISH!
I come every week to get food and the staff have been so amazing. They have helped me in so many ways. Anthony and Maria are always helping me out with more then expected. I tend to forget that I am going to a food pantry. Thank you FISH for being there.
I have witnessed first-hand the life-changing assistance FISH has offered to their clients. I am proud to support and volunteer for this organization and encourage everyone to assist in any way they can!
Back in December my income changed drastically without notice. I looked to FISH for help with my electric bill. Upon meeting Nitza, she was so understanding and compassionate. I had never needed help before and didn’t know where to turn. Not only did they help with my electric but they also helped with my rent and gifts for my kids for Christmas. That was very unexpected and thoughtful. All the employees there are so kind. Anthony and Anna are 2 of my favorites for sure. Every week they give a bag of food for each kid along with other food from the pantry. During this pandemic they have been such a helping hand. Thanks so much!!!
I have heard of FISH on Sanibel, through the years I have worked on the island. I discovered many stories of helping others through this non-profit organization; I never thought I would need their help soon after!
Their acts of kindness, coupled with Nitza’s calming personality, aided me in not losing my home (through the first Covid-19 breakout). When I arrived at the facility, I was offered a well put together bag from their food pantry out front.
Through my difficult time, and even worrying about not being able to help others myself, I was extremely humbled from their gracious gift.
Thank you kindly, Christine F.
I have nothing but great things to say about FISH. They have been a vital resource for my family while I have been in school to further advance my family and career. Every staff member has been amazing and helpful especially Anna, Nitza, Anthony, and Maria. Thank you guys for all you do.
Probably the most use program around. You'll feel as if someone really has your back, when times get hard. Without F.I.S.H, I don't know how my wife and i would of survived once the Corona hit. I feel thankful and blessed.
Fantastic family at fish .During covid and being in America I could look to them for help financially .
So many times I was down an out no where to turn this organization step up and deliver just want to take a time out to say to all the staff of FISH thank you for everything Clive God bless you all you make me my family very proud
I have had an outstanding amount of help from f.i.s.h and they’re staff helping me make ends meet and provide for my family. Forever in my hearts and grateful for everyone who contributes.
F.I.S.H.....IS AMAZING!!! When this recent state of emergency hit both my husband and I were out of work and were in critical financial distress. They helped us get through an extremely difficult and stressful time. We are forever grateful for the assistance!!! Again.....AMAZING!!
I am very grateful that they are the best. They help everyone who needs it. I was very sick and they helped me in everything. Thanks to them I was able to do it. God bless you. Thanks
I love FISH and especially the people who work and volunteer there! They go out of their way to see what they can do to help you!
I am so thankful to have benefited from all they do!
The school supply drive is extremely helpful. My son is in middle school and he has 9 classes, which all require many school supplies that run very expensive. Last year alone I spent over $200 on his supplies and over $100 on my daughters supplies not including new clothes. I can't thank the donors and FISH organization enough for helping us. We appreciate all the great work you do!
i will like to say thank you to FISH staff. You guys don't know how much appreciated me and my family are for the school supply and gift cards for my kids. Again thank you so much god bless you all.
Thank you every week for the food for my family. Thank you. Thank you. and Thank you.
FISH is an extraordinary non profit that helps those in need that work and live on Sanibel and Captiva. As a donor, we are very proud to support a critical organization. Their management and staff are exemplary.
Attended Fish’s hurricane preparation seminar yesterday ;it is one of the best info sessions I’ve been to: well organized, focused and practical. Materials are all immediately useful; speakers obviously experts and superior communicators. Facing my first summer/hurricane season on island, I am more confident now because of Sanibel’s preps and the always accessible supportive FISH.
During red tide I had such a bad time trying to pay all my bills. It's hard being a seasonal employee already and I expected no help. My boss told me about FISH and they were so kind and walked me through the whole process. I am forever grateful and it makes me so proud to work on Sanibel.
After the algae episode that lasted for months on Sanibel it was really hard to make ends meet a lot of events for cancelled a lot of reservations were cancelled and it was just really impossible I was going to lose my house if it wasn't for this nonprofit organization was Nina helping me I could have never made it God bless this nonprofit organization they help so many people and they helped me save my house thank you so much!

I have using the pantry for 1 year. I work on Sanibel. I needed help with food and they helped me. Everybody is very nice. The food helps me and my 3 kids a lot. Thank you Miss Maria. FISH is very good.
Words cannot describe how grateful I am for F.I.S.H. of Sanibel -Captiva. I am currently trying to enhance my knowledge and career by going back to school for my Master's degree. Being a teacher, and not working during the summer, money is tight in my household. I wasn't even sure if I would be able to continue to pursue my goal of earning my degree. That is when I found out about this great organization. F.I.S.H. has graciously paid for my summer tuition so that I may continue working towards my degree without the stress of not being able to afford my tuition this summer. Thank you F.I.S.H. for allowing me to pursue my dreams!
FISH have always been highly professional, compassionate, responsive and willing to help. In terms of providing assistance to me when I have been in need, they have honestly been a God-send for me!

FISH have been exceptionally helpful to me at various times and in various instances. Whether it has been making their food pantry available to me or assisting me with much-needed dental work or with other medical issues, they have always - without exception! - been both highly helpful, personable and professional. From the volunteers to the staff members themselves, they have always not only done what is expected of them, but they have consistently demonstrated a genuine desire to be helpful. I cannot say enough good things about them!
Kudos to F.I.S.H. for another program to benefit the community of Sanibel-Captiva.
F.I.S.H. program director Kathy Monroe and Rachel Tritalk of Island Therapy Center presented a program of exercises to improve our balance. Also, in case we are alone at the time of a fall, numerous ways to navigate to a safer position using objects we have at our disposal around the house.
Judging by the comments I heard after the program, the information was appreciated by the large audience in attendance.......Keep up the good work F.I.S.H

My family and I are so lucky and grateful to receive help from FISH. I'd like to take a moment to recognize and thank the FISH staff and volunteers for their dedication and professionalism. Especially to Maria and my teacher Karen. I was able to receive Back to School Supplies for my daughter's first year of school. It helped us great deal. My teacher, Karen has helped me learn so much in the English program. I really enjoy the classes at FISH.
The angels at FISH provided a haven of support When I found myself in an unexpected and traumatic emergency. Their generous gifts of short term housing, food and even a bike helped me gain the strength I needed to persevere through a crisis. They were able to give me the support and leg up I needed to walk on my own. And I have. As a result, I have been able to start a new service offering Memory Care Support to our community. Maggie, Nitza, Maria, and all the staff and volunteers are a gift to Sanibel. Their love and support for our residents and guests improve the quality of life for us all. Thank you for supporting me and allowing me to now support FISH.
Extremely helpful and giving group of people, very willing to help without asking a million questions. They do so much for the community and people, the island would not be the same without F.I.S.H. !
My experience with this amazing non profit organization has been beyond amazing in every way possible! I struggle as a single mother with 2 kids and at my most desperate times I know I can count on FISH to help me get thru a tough week! The staff are very welcoming and have reached out to me with open hands to get us on our feet. I appreciate each and everyone person there. My thanks goes to all. Keely P
As hard as I try I am unable to put into words how thankful I am for what Nitza and FISH have done for me. During the most difficult moments of my life they offered a helping hand. At their office I am always greeted with warm smiles. I admire the dedication and ongoing support FISH offers to all of their clients, myself included,
Dear Nitza,
I cannot tell you how grateful I am to F.I.S.H. for generously paying my full rent for the month of July. F.I.S.H. has always helped me out when I have been in need financially and in other ways, (assisting me apply for unemployment after hurricane Irma, Taxes, Access and the food pantry…). I also appreciate your gently and understanding approach when you and I have had conversations about my living situation on Sanibel.
With much gratitude,
L
Greetings Nitza.
For us (family Sosa - Gomez), F.I.S.H represents an organization with wonderful people who dedicate their time and resources to help those most in need. To all the donators and collaborators of the F.I.S.H organization, many blessings always. It is a blessing for many people who have received help from fish. In particular, they have helped us in every way, from the emotional to the economic. In the most difficult moments of our lives, F.I.S.H Case Manager Nitza has been by our side as if it were part of our family. With great respect and admiration for what they have done for us and for many families we wish all the people that make possible the existence of fish many blessings and that continue pleasing hearts with everything they do for their neighbor.
On behalf of the Gomez- Sosa family, many thanks and blessings.
F.I.S.H. has been so wonderful to my kids and I. We appreciate every bit of help they offer as well as the food pantry. I highly recommend them to everyone!
Dear Nitza,
I want to take a moment to thank you for the phenomenal amount of help your organization provided to me during the worst time of my life. After suffering through a quadruple bypass and open heart surgery, I found myself in a morass of paperwork and appointments. I was feeling pretty vulnerable being out of work and seeing the mounting medical bills. Fish not only helped pay my rent for three months, they helped pay my deductibles, my hospital bills, they arranged for my rehabilitative medical equipment, shared the contents of their food pantry and were there as positive support throughout many long difficult days. Even through Hurricane Irma, with all of the other people that needed their help, they were there for me. Now that I am doing better, they recently gave me a three-wheeled bike to continue strengthening both my body and spirit. I had no idea that Fish even existed until a co-worker with cancer told me how much they had helped him and how wonderful the people were at Fish. My own family couldn't have been more helpful and supportive.
Thank you truly from the bottom of my heart,
F.I.S.H. has been a well known non-profit organization for many years. It's main effort was in the food pantry, meals for seniors, back pack lunches for kids, etc. Although F.I.S.H. had expanded it's services, they were not well known in the community. F.I.S.H., about 4 years ago started a major campaign to create awareness. it was a combination of weekly ads, annual brochures and monthly newsletter. All of the ads and brochures have been donated by our generous donors. Awareness of our programs, services and workshops has grown everyday. Today F.I.S.H. provides programs and services for many clients who didn't realize they could get help. It's true that it's 'Neighbors Helping Neighbors.....chris coile, board member

When I first became aware of FISH I thought it was a food pantry. It sounded like a worthwhile organization so I decided to raise money for them by giving a series of rock and roll and country concerts each year. I needed more detailed information for the promotion of the concerts and was astounded when I discovered that FISH, in addition to the pantry, has over 40 additional Food Programs, Services and Workshops. It is a wonderful organization focused on Sanibel and Captiva. It really is Neighbors Helping Neighbors....chris coile
Wheelchair: My wife had IPF (Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis). As the disease progressed her strength decreased. Walking, even short distances, became difficult. FISH lent us a wheelchair which allowed us to get out to a store or and event which improve her life at the time,
I have worked with F.I.S.H. OF SANCAP for 15 years as a volunteer. I am proud and honored to have been a part of and organization which works diligently and compassionately for their community. Each year I am impressed as to the community out reach by a volunteer Board of Directors, a small and professional staff and many, many caring volunteers. No matter what you "walk in life" is FISH is always there to assist everyone.

I have volunteered with F.I.S.H. for 15 years. Over the years I have delivered meals and equipment, driven islanders to medical appointments and assisted with their Hurricane Committee. My most memorable times have been meeting new "neighbors" hearing their life stories and learning more of the history of our wonderful island. I have learned that I receive much more than I give. I feel I have worked with others who were long time volunteers for F.I.S.H. and now are the recipient of many services. I am proud and honored to be a part of such a vital and much needed organization and look forward to working with our islanders for years to come.
We have been volunteers for this treasure of an organization for the past 10 years. They have grown to fill many formerly unmet needs on our island communities. Their process for qualifying potential "clients" is impressive and makes donating time and funds to them a comfortable way to "invest" in helping the most challenged folks in our community.
Keep up the good work. Chip & Nancy Roach
They have all helped my family in so many different ways and have really made our lives better with all the caring and helpfulness they have ways provided. I rate them a 6+. So many people are in need and they care about each and everyone. I love this organization.
My experience with FISH was so great. I had a bad situation and they helped me a lot. I didn't have a house to sleep in, so they helped me get an apartment and assisted with the deposit and utilities. I used their food pantry. Every day I am so happy for FISH. I now have a job and can pay my expenses. FISH was so understanding and caring. They listened to my situation without judgment, they work so hard to help others. There was one day I didn't have any place to go, with my daughter, and someone told me about FISH. I talked with their social worker and she helped me get information and food and resources and worked with me to get on my feet. My life is better now because of FISH. I hope to get more hours so I can catch, every single day when I wake up I am thankful for FISH and for the staff that helped me. My daughter now feels safe with our new apartment She tells me every day to call FISH and say thank you, thank you, thank you.
After hurricane Irma hit we found ourselves in a situation we had never been in in many ways. We had always been on the 'giving' end of charities, never on the 'receiving' end and never dreamed we would be. Being a small, relatively new tour service we have worked very hard and our business, while not booming, was growing. When Irma hit, all of the tours we had booked either had to be cancelled or were cancelled by our clients. Not only were we refunding deposits, but we lost the rest the money we would have made at the conclusion of their tour. To top it off, no tours were being booked. Even now, we are finding people are aftaid to book because they don't know the condition of the area and are choosing to go to other places.
We had no electricity for almost 2 weeks after Irma and had to throw out our intire refrigerator and freezer with no money to restock.
We had been told about F.I.S.H. by a business that I work part time at on the island. Not knowing what else to do, we took a deep breath and walked in. We were met with the most kind, genuinely concerned, non-judgmental people we could possibly ever had imagined.
After shopping the food pantry we were given some paperwork to fill out and told to make an appointment with a case worker and talk with them. When we came for our appointment we we were met with yet another kind, concerned and compassionate lady by the name of Nitza. After talking with her and finding out all of the help available to us, it felt like the weight of the world had been lifted off of our shoulders.
It's hard to know how to say thank you, because words seem so insufficient.
Thank you to all of the workers and volunteers who truly do make a difference in people's lives. You are a Godsend and a true blessing.
For as long as I can remember, I've always wanted to be a nurse. I guess life just got in the way, until now. With the help of F.I.S.H. Adult Education Program, I am now a Florida State Certified Nursing Assistant!”. I knew I wanted to return to school, but didn’t think it was attainable from a life/work balance and financial standpoint, in talking with Nitza Lopez, F.I.S.H. social worker, she made me feel that everything was possible, and helped guide me through the application and state funding process.
F.I.S.H was so supportive during this process, and gave me the clarity I needed to believe in myself and to better my life. I can’t thank F.I.S.H. enough for their support and assistance.
To have an organization like F.I.S.H. in the community is amazing. They really make you feel like you can do anything, like you belong, and like you are part of a family.
I really appreciate the help FISH has given to me. After this month it was hard, I have 5 kids, and just had a baby, so I couldn't work for a while. When I come here to ask to help, and they were so nice to help me, and I really appreciate it. I use the Food Pantry, and FISH reached out to the community, and gave me referrals to help with my other needs. FISH helped with Hurricane Relief too. They are wonderful
I've worked as a volunteer for many non-profits and FISH far and away is the best run of all. The staff are truly community and client centered, treating all with warmth and respect. The range of services to the community is broad, from a well stocked food pantry, to providing medical equipment, rides, and meals to those in need, plus workshops on useful topics like budgeting, resumes, and nutrition. FISH has a small, but compassionate and expert staff, supplemented by many dedicated volunteers. I encourage everyone to donate to this outstanding community based organization and to volunteer if you are local.
FISH of SanCap provides much needed assistance to people who live and/or work on the islands.
As a FISH volunteer, I witness the great need people have for the Food Pantry, children's back pack program (food for children for the weekend), medical transportation and/or equipment provided, classes and seminars that address needs, utility and rent assistance, etc.
People are thoroughly vetted to verify need. There is no other agency fulfilling these needs for our own community/on island.
Thank you FISH and your compassionate and dedicated staff!
I live on a small island. FISH is our only comprehensive social service agency. FISH is all things to everyone who lives, works and visits here. We are neighbors helping neighbors in every way - from food pantry to meals on wheels to backpacks for kids who need food away from school, and much much more. I am proud to be associated with such a fine agency.

Thank you Sheridan for your review!
F.I.S.H. Makes it possible for me to do shopping, go out to eat and even get from our condo to our car. I can't express the value and generosity of this organization enough. Everyone affiliated with F.I.S.H. loves Sanibel as we do. We have been coming since 1985 but I have developed MS so it is much more difficult to enjoy all that Sanibel has to offer. The walker and wheelchair are invaluable. We rent a beach wheelchair which enables me to get to "my beloved Gulf" Thanks to all!
I have been fighting cancer on and off for the past 3 years,FISH and Jessi have been there for me. From assisting with bills, filling out paperwork or a friendly ear, Jessi at FISH is your girl. I am so grateful for this program for without FISH and Jessi, I'm not sure where I would be. Thank you Jessi and FISH!!
When I first moved to the islands from the Midwest, I had always heard about FISH in our local newspapers and always believed them to be an agency helping the elderly i.e. giving rides to doctor's appointments, providing temporary medical equipment, hot lunches, etc.. Boy, was I wrong! I learned first hand that FISH is a helping agency for everyone who lives in our community from the elderly, to single parents ,or to anyone who finds themselves in dire circumstances.
I became one of the later when I suddenly lost my job of eighteen years. I had a home here on the island, a high powered successful career, no family, and nearing retirement. When I found myself at the grocery on the weekend and not enough money to even buy a jar of peanut butter I knew I was in desperate trouble. A friend working there immediately contacted FISH. FISH instantly fronted me with $50.00 of grocery money and arranged for me to meet with them that very Monday. No waiting weeks to get an appointment. It was then I learned the true life sustaining purpose of FISH.
Between FISH and the bank I was able to get a mortgage modification to keep my home. FISH gave me generous access to their complete food pantry, covered medical issues I was having, and provided the funds to cover my immediate living expenses until I was able to get back on my feet. They also assisted me with needed counseling, a free computer, and help with job searches. They invited me to attend their enlightening seminars on stress, proper diet, personal safety, and budgeting, and offered free income tax processing. Unbelievable but true - they also provided me holiday meals when I hadn't the funds to splurge.
I learned first hand what FISH is. They are a wonderful helping agency that assists people in a multitude of ways. They don't just help with one thing or another. And they continue to help until you're back on your feet and whole again. I know I wouldn't have made it without them in my life. I will never forget all the help they gave me in my very darkest times. God bless FISH and all of its wonderful volunteers!
Words truly can't express how thankfulful I am for Jessi and everyone at F.I.S.H. I recently found myself in a dire financial situation due to unforeseen circumstances. As a divorced parent, living on a very strict budget it didn't take long before I was overwhelmed with disconnection notices.
F.I.S.H. went above and beyond to help me get caught up on both my rent and electric. They assisted me with groceries from their food pantry and Jessi even helped me create a new budget to get back on track.
They have all been a godsend and I will remain filled with gratitude for their kind support.
F.I.S.H of Sanibel has been very kind and helpful in my time of need . I am a single mother who has done very well with my beautiful daughter . However on occasion life has got difficult . Always moving in the right direction but sometime needing a little lift. They have always been kind and informative in their help. It's never something I want to admit but I can not always make ends meet . They let me know I am doing the right thing and just keep fighting. Sometimes with things as simple as a bit of help with keeping food on the table . Other times a little more with finances . I very much appreciate that there is someone who does actully care for me and my daughter .
F.I.S.H of Sanibel-Captiva, Inc. has helped my family over the years with paying our rent and utilities in the months when we did not have the money to pay either. I am a single parent with 2 children and a full time job and still have trouble making ends meet.
I cannot thank them enough not only for the financial help but the kindness of the staff.
All the ladies at F.I.S.H. have been absolutely wonderful to my family and I. The classes they have held have been very beneficial and helpful as well as offering scholarships for kids extra curricular activities.
This is an amazing organization and I can't thank them enough for all they've done to help not only me but others in this beautiful community.
As Director of Operations & Grants, I oversee daily operations at the F.I.S.H. OF SANCAP Walk-In Center, Food Pantry and of its programs, services and workshops. I am deeply committed to social change and have worked in the nonprofit sector for more than 10 years in different agencies and capacities. I have a passion for affecting systemic change in the way that the public, private and nonprofit sectors work together to support and strengthen the community. She is specifically skilled on working to build alliances and partnerships with mission and results driven outcomes in mind. When asked what draws me to F.I.S.H., I respond: “F.I.S.H. is a unique agency, and Sanibel/Captiva a unique place, where we celebrate diverse ideas and diverse cultures. We have an engaged and passionate population; people who want to get involved in their community life. I am excited to bring what I have learned over the years to apply to the concerns, needs and desires of our community. I recognize that F.I.S.H. is the organization that strengthens those who live, work or visit Sanibel and Captiva. F.I.S.H. provides the kind of programs, services and workshop that strengthen our community as a whole. F.I.S.H. OF SANCAP is for everyone."
I would like to sincerely thank F.I.S.H., for all of the years of support,
The generous contributions that FISH has provided me throughout the years, have reduced my financial burden, it allowed me to focus on my schoolwork and not worry so much about how I would have to pay for school. All your act of kindness has made an incredible difference in my life as well as my family’s.
Thank you, again
I have been a volunteer with F.I.S.H. for more than 15 years. I have found each year to be more rewarding than the previous as I have watched this vital organization grow and enhance services offered to their island neighbors. The excellent leadership with F.I.SH. continues to meet the changing needs of the community each year. Their "open door" policy to share information on their services as well as their financials should be applauded by all islanders as they continue to assist and improve the lives of others. I am proud to say "I am a F.I.S.H. volunteer.
F.I.S.H. is a human services non-profit which assists almost 400 households for those who live or work on Sanibel or Captiva. It provides a food pantry, social workers, emergency financial assistance for housing and medical needs, and much more. It is a truly outstanding organization. I have served on the Board here for about 6 years and could not be prouder of its staff and 200 volunteers.
My wife and I are current volunteers with FISH and annual contributors. We believe this wonderful organization continues to provide vital services to the community through all their programs and services. We are proud to be volunteers and believe this non-profit continues to benefit the islands of Sanibel and Captiva through good stewardship of their funds. We highly recommend F.I.S.H.
I have been a volunteer with FISH for nearly 8 years. I have helped deliver medical equipment, meals on wheels, driven clients to their physicians appointments and served on the board of directors.
FISH has a dedicated staff and many outstanding volunteers.
I am a true believer in neighbors help neighbors and that is what fish is all about.
F.I.S.H. of SanCap does an outstanding job of helping those in need (and others) who live or work on Sanibel and Captiva Islands, including working mothers in the service, hospitality and retail businesses whose hours are seasonal (but whose expenses are not), as well as families with emergency medical or housing needs, elderly residents in need of meals delivered daily, etc. It also provides many programs open to anyone on budgeting, personal safety and nutrition, plus hosts programs provided by other United Way agencies such as assistance with Medicare, tax preparation (VITA), English tutoring, etc. F.I.S.H. is the United Way House on Sanibel and Captiva.
