Beacon House saved my son’s life. The House returned him to his children, cured the demons he carried from, serving as combat medic, and allowed my son to live up to his potential. Every time I attend an event at the House, at least several men thank me for my son’s guidance and support. To me, this ripple effect is the magic of Beacon House. It doesn’t just heal individuals , it heals families and communities. It is the best non profit!

The Beacon House Association of San Pedro is such an amazing program and organization. The employees are helpful and truly care about the mission, working tirelessly to help men achieve their full potential. Beacon House's social model should be the model for every substance use treatment center in the country.

My son “Matty” passed away at 16 years old. He was starting to experiment with drugs and alcohol like many teenagers do. Unfortunately one day he got a hold of a Xanax that was fake and contained fentanyl. He took that pill that night went to bed and never woke up.
Matty was my only child. I never want to see any parent have to go through losing a child so I embrace the Beacon House in their efforts to help those who are struggling make a better life for themselves.
I have witnessed the positive changes the Beacon House program has made for several young men. I have seen men gain self respect, become good family men and learn what it takes to become productive and prosperous in the community.
I will continue to fight against Fentanyl Poisoning to help save lives!

I recently attended their fundraising dinner. I heard stories about the successes all night and got to meet the men. The miracle that is Beacon House has touched so many lives. Not only are they giving men the opportunity to rebuild, but they are also giving them back to their families. When they say seeing is believing, let me tell you I believe.

The Beacon House has saved so many lives over the years. They take men off the streets, and give them the tools to handle and enjoy life over their time as a resident there. When the men leave the house after a couple years, they are sober, have learned a skill to earn a living, have a bank account, drivers license, and are ready to live a full and sober life.
The Beacon House success rate is amazing and sets the standard.

The Beacon House is a house of miracles! I have never seen such an amazing recovery home. It is well run, efficient, successful, and exceeds all expectations on helping men reach their dreams. Their unique approach to helping men who enter the home transition from the depths of society to successful members of society sets the standard for recovery homes.

My son went through the program and it changed his life. He is back to being my son again after a long standing bout with alcoholism. I have also admired and thoroughly enjoyed the many dinners and fundraisers Beacon House puts on because it allows parents, donors and sponsors to interact directly with the men going through the program.

This year amidst several other milestones we celebrated my son's 5th year of sobriety. Without his sobriety, nothing else would have been possible. He continues to be supported by the Beacon House, through friendships, mentors and the many men that have gone before him. This unique program has given him the guidance and support that he needed to make a meaningful and happy life for himself. We are very grateful.

The long term effect of our son's addiction created obstacles that at times, seemed insurmountable. How do you get a job with huge gaps in your employment and a criminal record, how do you find a place to live with debt and bad credit, how do you rebuild relationships after years of lies, how do you look at yourself in the mirror after saying or doing things that you never thought that you would? After a certain amount of time 30 or 90 days of sobriety is a tiny portion of trying to rebuild your life. Beacon House gives men that sober time, but, oh so much more! Life skills, support, a financial plan, an education, job skills, counseling, no one is turned away at no cost. We are so grateful to have our son in our lives again. I am so grateful to the Beacon House and the men that make it such an amazing place.

My son has been clean for over 5 years! Initially, he was not ready to change but it was jail or rehab. So, when he was making the commitment to go to Beacon House, he could say that he was going to try but what he really meant was that he was going in with the idea of "doing my 90 days." The counselors saw right through it and over time, taught him to be real with himself and his addiction. Up until then, he was "checking all the boxes" set by society; full-time student at a private university, working construction full-time, renting a room in a house, moving forward in life; he was not an everyday drinker which added to the illusion of "being in control." BUT, he was a blackout drunk, not remembering much of anything that had transpired and incredulous when others told him. Today, he is facing life on life's terms with a clear mental state, knowing that he has strong and clean men to consult, going to meetings, meditating, breathing in life for all of its ups and downs. Our family gets to have holidays, camping trips, phone calls, etc. with our healthy, funny, loving son and we are forever humbled and grateful to Beacon House. We LOVE going to their thrift stores and any events they hold! If you get the opportunity, go to an event!!

Thanks to their hard work and the support of the Beacon House, the men have a second chance at life to find their passion and make meaningful connections with their loved ones. I had no idea what Beacon House in San Pedro was until it became a part of our family. My child's struggle with addiction led him to discover Beacon House and start a program, that would last a full year. Knowing that an organization like this is out there for men is reassuring. They are saving lives. Lives of son, fathers, brothers, friends. Lives of men who deserve second chances, or third....or more. I can tell you from a parent, it is not easy to let your child go for a full year, without any contact, but what that child gains is immeasurable and worth the wait. May the work at Beacon House continue for as long as is necessary and may God bless all who work there and reside within their walls. Love, Mom

The Beacon House Association of San Pedro has changed the life of my son and has given him the tools to take control of his life in recovery from alcoholism. Three years ago my son Daniel was in the grip of the alcoholism beast. After losing nearly everything and experiencing homelessness, he was referred to the Beacon House and consequently that decision to not have contact with his family for a minimum of nine month to a year, saved his life. As his mother, I finally had peace of mind knowing he was getting healthy and received the best treatment for his alcoholism. Now our lives are filled with trust, promise and serenity because of the impact and guidance of the men and staff of the Beacon House. For that reason, they have and will forever hold a special place in my hear.

I have had the good fortunate to work alongside the find men of Beacon House when they have been involved in community works such at handling parking for events such as the Taste in San Pedro, supporting guides for the 1st Thursday Artwalk for many years and much more.

At all times, have these men been thoughtful, polite and appreciative of the opportunity to serve our community. I have occasionally shared a very brief version of my long time sobriety. Because of my experiences with these me and as a Certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor, I have confidently referred many others to Beason House. May their success continue. Linda Alexander

After 35 years of untreated alcoholism I arrived at the Beacon House out options, money having pushed away all family and friends. Over the past 15 months I learned and gained the tools necessary to remain sober the rest of my life. I recently starting working again and learning to become a productive member of society. I could not say enough good things about the Beacon House. As a lifelong resident of San Pedro, I can say with the utmost confidence that this institution is one of the best things to happen to this town.

It is not only serving exactly the needs of the community, but it has done some life-changing work for those in the program-- to the point where I would hope that every town in America could get to have a Beacon House open up in their community, as to bring a positive and inspiring experience to all levels of involvement.

Very rarely in the world do you see truly good things happening so efficiently, so clearly, and so directly. For that reason, I can't say enough good things here.

I look forward to my next visit and I want to thank anyone who has ever donated their time and money to the Beacon House.

A friend of mine introduced me to Beacon House recently and they continue to amaze me at every event. I have attended some of the Bistro events, as well as the annual galas. The men of Beacon House run the events like a high end restaurant. The men in the kitchen cook the most delicious food. The men who are waiting tables are so attentive you would think you are fine dining. The most inspiring thing is that you are able to sit at the table with someone who has gone through the program or is currently and it is just amazing to hear how much Beacon House as saved them.

I was completely broken and full of fear when I was welcomed into the Beacon House. I had no idea there was a place like this in the world. By following some simple directions I began to have purpose in my life. I could look myself in the mirror and actually like the person I saw. My eyes have light, hope and love in them. That empty pit inside me filled up. I made friends I will have for life. I learned how to be honest and a law abiding citizen. I began to really care for others and wanted to be a helpful person. This is more than a treatment center. It's a lifechanging center. Thank you to all the wonderful men both clients and staff that have been a part of my recovery. If you are broken and have tried other treatment centers this is the place for you. I am not saying it is easy but it works and works well. I could write an entire book on this lifechanging experience. Thank God for directing me to this wonderful place.

I was invited by my roommate to come to the Beacon House Block Party on August 10th 2002. My intentions were set on food and a DJ dance. When I arrived I saw my friend Robbie in the back of the Beacon House. He said I looked horrible and messed up. I agreed. He told me he was an Alumni of the house and told me I should get into the the House asap. I new he was right, I told myself I needed to really get sober and do it differently. He bought me a hamburger , hot dog and a soda; gave me two dollars to put in the gas tank. Told me to come back tomorrow and ask Bill or Andy to do whatever it took to get a bed.
I showed up and talked to the Director Louie. They didn't have a bed , but they put me on the wait list. I was to call every day until a bed came available. I went back to my sober living in Long Beach and called every day from the pay phone there. I quit my job. Finally on August 20th they said there was a bed available. I immediately said, "can i get lunch first them come to the House?" They said, "If you don't get here in an hour then I would lose my bed". I packed up all my clothes in my car and drove with my roommate Brian to the House. When I arrived I told my roommate Brian to keep my car. That I didn't want it anymore. I was given a bed in the main house. But first I had to fill out an application for acceptance. I remember reading at the the top . "Are you willing to go to any length for you Recovery?" I checked Yes and filled the application.
I thought to myself, " I'll give it a try, but my track record is usually 90 days or less" I always went back to drinking for the past 3 years. I showed up in Long Beach in 1999 to do my Parole and get my life in order. But I kept relapsing. I went to Acton Rehab, Stanton Detox and another rehab G.O.D ministry. Nothing ever worked for me. I was too set in my old thinking. I never went through the work with a sponsor.
I told myself I would do my best to follow the rules and get a sponsor and do what they said and not leave until I graduated rehab and go to onsite Sober Living. After a few weeks I heard an alumni of the house speak and I pocketed my pride and asked him to sponsor me. I was totally all in. I didn't want to do the prayer thing , but eventually I did start praying morning and night. He relapsed and I asked Dale to help me pick a sponsor. I went through the steps over my first 5 months. The house showed me how to help the new guys, by asking how they were and how I could help welcome them. I started to make friends and went on house events and helped the community. I learned how to do commitments in meetings and around the house. I wanted to leave a few times and the senior guys really helped me stay. After 9 months in the house I was on the Transition list. I graduated and moved into Channel View. I asked Bill if I could move to Park View , since it was next to the Pit. It really helped me. I went to Harbor Occupational Center and took a class in Computer Networking. I learned how to fix computers and networking skills. I found that I loved taking them apart and fixing them. I used this talent to help others in the house and troubleshoot internet issues and stuff. After 2 years in the house I was directed to put my resume on Monster.com and look for work. I found my first tech support job with VerizonDSL. I passed the tests and placed my paperwork in to transition out of the Sober Living. An Alumni helped me find an apartment in Long Beach, since I didn't have any rental history.
I started going to meetings in Long Beach and doing Recovery Panels. I feel that the two year Foundation I received at the Beacon House has giving me the life that I have today! I have 18 years of amazing Recovery. I want to personally thank the Director Bill M. , Louie L. and Andy. They were instrumental in my recovery at the Beacon House. Thank God for all my Beacon Brothers while in the House and all the Alumni that took their time helping us all.

My name is Daniel Velky, my experience with The Beacon House is a life changing one. I was at the house for three and a half years. In 2014 I left the house and continued using alcohol and drugs. After three days i realized how i messed up and called every day for 6 months, knowing that The Beacon House was something extraordinary. After many surrenders I have been clean and sober and god filled for three and a half years, I have a host of friends a purpose and a job helping the homeless community and being reintroduced to someone who I thought I would only visit at his graveside. Thank you God and The Beacon House for never giving up on me and believing in me.

Las Candalistas is a non profit organization that has been fundraising to support local children's and environmental charities since 1967. We do this by having 2 fundraising events every year. We simply couldn't put on these events without the kind, polite and hard working men of the Beacon House. These wonderful men have been helping us for many years to put our events on by loading and unloading our trucks with the items we use for our events, and helping us set up. They do it all with a smile and are all so eager to help in any way they can. We could not do what we do without their help. We are forever grateful for the hand that they definitely have in helping us to contribute millions of dollars to children's and environmental causes in the South Bay. Thank you Beacon House Men!

My son has been at the Beacon House since Nov.15, 2016, the day that changed all of our lives forever. On this day we dropped our son at the door of the Beacon House and were told to say good bye we would see him in about a year. We kissed him good bye and did not know what to expect. We found out about the Beacon House from an addiction counselor at his 6 th rehab program. We have since gone back to that counselor to thank him. Why did it take us so long to find the Beacon House? The work they do here is incredible, there is no other place like this. I believe the Beacon House should be the model by which all other rehab programs fashion themselves. Yes it is a year long, but this is why it works. They are not just detoxing they are changing lives, this takes time. It took my son 27 years to get where he had gotten, you can't change that in 30,60, or 90 days. The Beacon House has done for my son what my husband and myself were unable to do. They changed the focus of our sons life from himself to serving others. He is back in school, helping the community, he is calm, at peace and happy. I will spend the rest of my life thinking of ways to repay this priceless gift.

My son has been clean and sober for 5-1/2 years because of the Beacon House and because of my sons hard work. The Beacon House is like no other rehab. Most rehabs are 30-90 days. The first phase of the Beacon House is close to 1 year depending on the individual. Yes, depending on the individual. The Beacon House looks at these amazing men individually and helps them heal and work through old wounds or whatever the case may be. The men are not just automatically discharged after a certain number of days. Its a case by case basis. The Beacon House is truly amazing. My son had overdosed 3 times before going to the Beacon House and the 3rd time we were told to call our family because he was probably not going to survive! Now, we have our son back in our family:) He received his Associates Degree this past spring and is moving forward with his education at Cal State Long Beach. He works and continues to give back to the community as well as the Beacon House. This program is like no other. I only wish more of them were out there. Our family is beyond grateful for the Beacon House!!!!!

We shared a delightful dinner with a hundred or so other supporters which was catered by the young men in residence. I had heard of Beacon House but never visited their San Pedro campus. What a memorable and uplifting experience to tour and meet such fine young men who have transitioned from losers into winners! Well mannered, inspirational and mature young men who present well and have every potential to go out and contribute to society and live virtuous, upstanding, and happy lives as their future unfolds.

This place has provided a brotherhood that we couldn't give to our son. They taught him how to love himself and be accountable for his behavior and actions. I have loved seeing these guys transform into the men they are meant to be. They have a purpose and the support they need to reach their future goals. My heart soars when I hear how respected they are in the community. Most importantly, they have found faith to support each other through each day no matter what occurs. I see my better half (pastelro) posted our Halloween story, and the rest, as they say, is history. I plan our family’s Thanksgiving dinner to be able to volunteer at the Beacon House. The Beacon House is hope— not only for the men courageous enough to transform their lives and recover from the disease of addiction – it serves as a model of hope for us all. Attorney and civil rights leader, Mahatma Gandhi, said, “You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.” He also said, “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” These men are the personification of faith in humanity and the positive impact of change in our world. They do so much for the community beyond the boundaries of San Pedro, CA that it is my honor and privilege that these men allow me to volunteer and support them any way I can. I am in healthcare, and I believe that the secret to the Beacon House’s success is the fact that it does not accept any financial assistance from a health plan. Theirs is not a cookie cutter formula. It is a true conversion. It is awe inspiring seeing these men grow and become the man each is intended to be in God’s divine grace. They each encourage me to be a better version of myself just by being themselves. Please come to a Bistro and experience it yourself. It will change your life for the better!

Thankfully I, nor any family member, have needed the services of the Beacon House but if required, hands down this is the ONLY place treatment would be sought - We learned of the Beacon House during a Halloween event they used to host more then a decade back - We were so impressed with the Beacon House we volunteered for their Thanksgiving and Christmas events which has now become a holiday tradition for our family- This then lead to the discovery of the monthly Bistro events where the men prepare and serve gourmet meals for an extremely reasonable price - These end of month dinners serve as our "date night" - This event is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the miracles that take place daily - The men are very eager to engage in conversation and provide an amazing dining experience - Over the years we have been attending we have gotten to know many of them - Its always a delight to see their smiling faces and share in the excitement of their journey of sobriety - After dinner the men share their stories - They candidly discuss how their lives have been given a sense of purpose - We have witnessed first hand how their lives have been and continue to be transformed - In addition, I have seen the men out in the community doing work - Their enthusiasm is contagious - There is something truly magical about the Beacon House - They have a recipe for success that is unrivaled - Don't believe me, then I encourage you to attend a Bistro (event dates are on their website) and see for yourself - The men look forward to meeting you!

We provide our graduates with all they need to set up their new household. Most items are donated by compassionate residents who are downsizing or moving. Beacon House donated their truck & men to help us with a large move from a residence to our storage unit. They arrived on time, were extremely professional and didn't stop for a moment until the job was done! Thanks to the men of Beacon House, multiple families & their children will have a fresh start in a furnished home. We could not have done it without them!

The Beacon House saved my son's life. This facility gave him the support and tough love needed to overcome his addiction. The Beacon House taught him to be the man of character we always knew him to be before drug addition took over his life. They provided him with the tools to reenter mainstream society. They helped him develop a sense of community and helped him to learn of a higher purpose in life. Hopefully, he will pass these on to others who are lucky enough to enter the Beacon House. As the years go by we continue to lose others to drug addiction and with broken hearts we feel so sad for their families and so blessed at the same time to know there is help out there if folks can find it.

I came to The Beacon House a broken man. They accepted me with open arms when I had nothing but the cloths on my back and not a penny to my name. They nursed me back to health and showed me how to live life on life's terms without resorting to drinking or using. I didn't think there was any hope of me ever changing, that my life was over. But it wasn't. In fact they showed me that it had just begun! I owe everything to this house. How can you put a price on a new lease in life? You can't. I hope to always be involved with The Beacon House and will do whatever I can to help them continue there mission.

I would like to applaud and salute the men and youth who volunteered their time to provide community service in and around San Pedro. One morning I woke up and saw 5 bright yellow Beacon House shirts working hard on cleaning the shrub, weeds and trash at the end of our culde sac street. When I approached them to find out who they were I was surprised to learn about what the Beacon House was and the type of services they provide. They all seem very happy and committed to leave our street as clean as possible. They stayed over 5 hours to do a FANTASTIC job! May I say that day's temperature was close to 90 degrees!! What a tremendous privilege, honor and opportunity to meet these fine men and learn about the Beacon House! I want to thank and wish the organization continued success and hope the men seeking guidance and support through the BH find it rewarding to know their services are meaningful and appreciated! My 5 year old son got his first taste of what community service is all about! Thank you!

The Beacon House of San Pedro is a loving safe environment that provides guidance, leadership and opportunity and turns the residents into men. I have seen the miracle. My son is a man who knows his God and is guided by his conscience. I see the sparkle in his eyes after so many years of seeing a blank empty darkness. He is alive with the love of life and all because of the love, fellowship, and enlightenment at The Beacon House staff. Amazing program.

What a fantastically successful program! The house provides a safe haven for men who have lost hope of recovery, but who are willing to grasp one last opportunity. Peer support and participation in a 12-step program help the men examine their own lives, gain confidence and begin to make plans for the future. Education, employment and volunteer opportunities are available and encouraged. Outreach to the community takes many forms. One of the most satisfying is the Bistro, in which the men plan, prepare and serve a monthly sit-down dinner for the public.

There are not enough words to describe the gratitude and appreciation for the staff at The Beacon House. I recently was able to witness their work first hand at my son's graduation from Phase 1, it was amazing. The love and support that they have for each other and themselves is a true blessing and gave me an opportunity to reflect on what I am doing to give back. This organization is teaching these men to give to anyone in need with love, respect and understanding something this world so desperately needs right now.

I will start with three things I am eternally grateful for and in order, God, the VA Hospital in Long Beach and the Beacon House. I came to the house back in the day when there were only eighteen men in the primary program. Mary P. was the ED, and Luis L. was PD. If it were not for the aforementioned list of three eternally things I am grateful for, I would have not celebrated twenty years of sobriety this past August. As the Beacon House taught me in my early recovery, I could not have achieved the life I have today. The importance of becoming honest with my self, learning to be open-minded, willing to go to any lengths and being of service to others were instilled into me and have been the keys to a happier and more productive life. Although I do not live in the area anymore and have not in years, the Beacon House will always have a special place in my heart.

I have been associated with the men of Beacon House for several years. The organization is the best of it's kind. The men are wonderful, appreciative, kind and a wonderful asset to the City of San Pedro and surrounding communities. Just being around the House and listening to to their stories lifts my spirits and makes me want to strive to be a better person. I have attended graduations, their Bistro's and Community breakfasts and I have to say you won't find a better group of dedicated individuals who are giving back to everyone they touch. I belong to an organization called "The Wonder Women". Our prime purpose is to raise funds for Scholarships for the men. We are bursting with pride every time they tell us how well they are doing in school and how much they appreciate our donations. I can honestly say that I LOVE BEACON HOUSE. Marilyn Bennett

The Beacon House Family never fails to impress. I have attended a number of events over the years, and each and every one is special in it's own way. Everyone is courteous and kind. The food is wonderful and the service is always great... in that these gentlemen truly appreciate your being there. They are funny and humble. It is always a delight to attend. They give back so generously to the community; assisting other non-profits with events, helping individuals in need, and Joe's crew...working on clearing plant growth and trash pick up...to keep our neighborhoods looking great. Thank you so much for all that you do !

When I attended my first fund raiser for The Beacon House I was very impressed with several things. First, the men of Beacon House actively participated in the success of the fundraiser. They provided artwork for sale and prepared and served our dinner, which was delicious. We were given the opportunity to meet and interact with the men our funds were serving. Second, I was impressed by the fact that the men are expected to serve their surrounding community by performing voluteer acts themselves. This provides them with a sense of accomplishment and self-worth. Finally, it was made very clear that they are provided with occupational training and/or schooling giving them an exit plan. I used to participate in another program but it did not have any type of follow up or transition program for the participants rejoining society. This is not the case with The Beacon House - the men receive full and complete support in their transition. It is a wonderful and blessed program.

I learned about the Beacon house about a year ago through a very good friend of mine. I was like most people thinking it was just a "rehab" where people stay for a little while and go back to doing what they always have before entering one. But honestly, this is like no other place I have encountered. The men here work really hard to become "clean and sober" and stay this way for life. They work with the public/ community in many different ways. They continue their education. They go on to become successful human beings in today's society. I am honored to have been able to work along side these men for different events this past year. It has been wonderful to see the growth in each of them.

After 14 other programs that were focused more on how I was going to pay for my program than returning me to society as a productive member, I was refered to the Beacon House. I didnt want to go, I thought that after 15 yrs of AA and 14 programs that this was just going to be the same as before. I was suicidel and hopeless. So, I went. It was the toughest thing I ever experienced, but, the most rewarding. I came in with no family (no mother, father, siblings etc. for over 20 yrs) and now I have more famiy that I can imagine. The desire to drink after the first few months without me even knowing about it. What did happen was I found that being alive was fun and enjoyable. If your thinking your different and nothing can help you, or your probems are unique...this is the place for you. I am now gainfully employed with a new career because I was given the opportunity to return to school and get a degree here at the house. How many programs do we know about that would let a man stay for four years so that he can get a degree? Only one .... the Beacon House. That's becasue they truey care about others and their futures. I can go on and on about how special this Association is. I just want to express that the house didnt save my life, it gave e a brande new one!

I became aware of Beacon House because of my nephew who credits Beacon House and its program with saving his life. I know his family had tried many other programs, but it wasn't until he entered Beacon that he was able to get the help he needed to deal effectively with his addictions. I recently spent time with my nephew and could not believe the changes in him. Because of the program and his hard work, he is an outstanding, caring individual and a complete joy to be around. My son began using weed when he was 14. As is typical of many drug users, he found that he could escape the pain of his core issues by getting high. He gradually tried many other drugs, mushrooms, inhalants, lsd, and heroin. My husband and I were frantic. We tried everything we could think of, including a lock-down rehab in another state. Nothing worked. Our family was falling apart, and the tension between my husband and me grew to the point where I doubted if our marriage could survive. Our son was in his late twenties and living on the streets when he found Beacon House. He has been clean and sober for over four years. He has a full-time job, he is well on his way to getting his associate's degree, and he is financially independent. But most importantly, through applying all he has learned at Beacon House, he is addressing those very issues that drove him to drug use in the first place. He works the program. He gives back daily to the residents of Beacon House. He has a bright future. He is a joy to be around. In all honesty, if he had not found Beacon House when he did, I believe he would either be in prison or dead by now. Beacon House - the people who helped him - and the 12 steps saved my son's life. We invite Beacon House residents into our home whenever it is appropriate to do so, and we have seen many fine young men benefiting in a similar manner. I cannot say enough good things about Beacon House!

Our son was deeply addicted to heroin. His addiction was destroying his life and seriously harming members of our family. We were all hurting. We finally had to tell our son that we would have no more contact with him unless he wanted us to drive him to rehab. A counselor in a homeless shelter told our son that he needed to go to Beacon House. He did, and he has now been clean and sober for over three years. He is enrolled in school and gets straight As. His conduct around family members is impeccable. He takes complete credit for his actions and is scrupulous in working the steps. I credit God and the outstanding staff at Beacon House for his turnaround. I am convinced that if our son had not entered Beacon House when he did, he would now be in prison or dead. He now has such a bright future. Every time we interact with Beacon House staff and residents, we are treated with respect and warm acceptance. I cannot say enough good about Beacon House! I always recommend it when counseling families in our church who struggle with addiction.

I was energized and excited about their program, their success rate, and especially with the staff and the participants. I was shown so much respect and kindness, which is a sharp contrast to our society which has lost much of its manners, and general consideration for its fellow man. My uncle has had a rough life, in and out of rehabs that promised to help keep him clean, and in and out of failed relationships and marriages. When he married the last time, I knew he had a great wife and thought that no one could ever get him back into drugs because now he has someone that will be there for him and help him through anything. She has always been there even after he got back into drugs. His love for her didn't keep him from getting back into drugs like I had prayed and hoped. He went through another failed marriage due to his addiction. His family, latest wife and friends have always tried to be there for him and help get him through this. We had started to feel as if there was nothing anyone of us could do. Then he went to the beacon house and his life has turned completely around. Giving him the opportunity to stay around and help others once his treatment was done, was in my opinion, the best thing for him. I remember family outings with his wife and children and he loved his job. He was successful and then all that was gone in the blink of an eye but now it is back and he is enjoying life again. He see's his daughter again, has maintained his relationship with his latest wife, and if there for his family again. Unfortunately, I don't get to see him all the time as I don't live in the area but I enjoy his emails and updates. I can read the difference in him. He is becoming the uncle I loved again. Beacon house has made such a difference in him that we cannot thank you enough. You brought back a missing piece of our family. I don't have to worry about that dreaded drug overdose call and I am very thankful for that. Thank you for giving my uncle back his life.

I watched my husband crawl inside a 20$ rock of crack and take his 401K, a truck, an excellent job , and the most beautiful baby girl in right in behind him. He smoked up a loving home, a kind and loving family , wonderful step-children,a white picket fence and a marriage. Bad -doesn't even come close to all the ruined dreams........and one day he went to The Beacon House....at the time I remembered thinking- well this is the only "rehab" that you haven't tried... I had begun to think that he just couldn't stay clean and that he didn't want too. At first The House wouldn't allow outside contact which was hard for our daughter and I. But we waited...and we hoped...and we prayed....and prayed some more...I prayed for him to stay....and finally after 30 years of addiction.. he found a program that worked...he stayed clean..he went through counseling ...groups...volunteer activities..and he became a "real person"...He has strength of character now...he has become more spiritually sound... and he is able to be the best father he can be...that baby girl isn't waiting for someone who isn't coming any more he is early! :) Though our marriage did not survive the addiction, because of the Beacon house; our friendship did. I have a relationship with a wonderful man and he has been clean over five years- THANK YOU BEACON HOUSE-THANK YOU GOD

I've watched my Uncle struggle with substance abuse pretty much my whole life. Watched my mom and the rest of my family try to save his life on numerous occasions and put him in numerous rehabs. They worked for a bit but he always went back to the old lifestyle. It was very painful to watch my uncle go through all this stuff because, when he was sober, he was the best uncle! And my mom and him were very close growing up. I got to the point where I was scared he would never be 100% sober.

Since being at the Beacon House, he is a different man than all the times he came out of rehabs. I see that this is the time "it will stick". LIKE I SAY THE WAVES WERE PUMPING, PERFECT RIGHTS AND LEFTS—EVERYONE WAS OUT IT SEEMED BUT ME.DRINKING MY VODKA I STARTED REFLECTING ON MY LIFE AND WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED, I SHOULD BE OUT IN THE WATER WITH THE REST OF MY FRIENDS.
BUT INSTEAD HERE I SIT—NO FRIENDS OR FAMILY TO SHARE CHRISTMAS WITH—JUST MY BOTTLE AND ME—I STARTED GETTING EMOTIONAL AND FEELING SORRY FOR MYSELF—THE MORE I DRANK THE MORE MISEABLE I GOT—AFTER WATCHING THE WAVES ALL DAY AND DOWN TO MY LAST DRINK—I DECIDED TO GO RECYCLING(CANNING) SO I COULD GET ANOTHER BOTTLE AND HAVE A LITTLE MONEY FOR CHRISTMAS DAY—I MADE IT AS FAR AS THE REDONDO BEACH PIER WHERE I STOPPPED TO TAKE A REST—AGAIN GETTING EMOTIONAL AT MY SAD STATE OF AFFAIRS I STARTED SINGING CHRISTMAS CAROLS WITH TEARS IN MY EYES—PEOPLE STARTED WALKING UP TO ME AND HANDING ME TWENTY DOLLARS BILLS AND TENS –SAYING MERRY CHRISTMAS GET SOMETHING TO EAT ON ME OR HAVE A DRINK ON ME—THE MORE MONEY THAT WAS HANDED TO ME THE MORE EMOTIONAL I BECAME-HERE IT IS THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT AND ALL THESE PEOPLE HANDING ME MONEY—THESE ARE THE SAME PEOPLE WHO IN A WEEK OR SO AFTER NEW YEARS IS CALLING THE COPS ON ME FOR DRUNK IN PUBLIC OR SOME OTHER FUNKY CRIME—WHY CAN’T PEOPLE HAVE THAT CHRISTMAS SPIRIT ALL YEAR AROUND—
BY THE WAY I WALKED OFF THE REDONDO BEACH PIER $130.58 RICHER—I WENT STRAIGHT TO ALBERTSONS GOT A HALF GALLON OF VODKA AND A RACK OF THE BBQ RIBS WENT TO HERMOSA TO CAMP ON THE BEACH AND GET PLOWED—HOPE CHAPEL WAS HAVING A CHRISTMAS SPREAD ON THE STRAND AND PIER AVENUE THE NEXT MORNING .IF IT WAS’NT FOR GOD GIVING ME THAT MOMENT OF CLARITY AND LEADING ME TO THE BEACON HOUSE AND THE ROOMS OF A.A. I’D STILL BE LIVING THE MISERY OR MORE LIKELY DEAD. I’M SO GLAD MY LIFE IS DIFFERENT TODAY AND THERE IS FAMILY AND FRIENDS (REAL FRIENDS) TO SHARE CHRISTMAS WITH, I WILL ALWAYS BE GRATEFULTO GOD, THE BEACON HOUSE, AND THE ROOMS OF ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS FOR THE SECOND CHANCE AT LIFE.

Troubled with alcohol abuse most my life, I was a lucky man going to the Beacon House through a VA program. I was so fortunate to have lived the program and turn my life as around. I can not emphasize the good the Beacon House does or the genius of program to re-instill humanity and worth within me.

I will continue to do all I can for them. They have given me my life back without asking me for anything but willingness.

My name is Steven N. I was addicted to drugs and alcohol for nearly 20 years. Nearly half of that time I was in and out of incarceration. I came to Beacon House in April 2000. All I wanted was to get off parole. They told me if I wanted true freedom from misery and a drug free lifestyle, I would have to trust the process. Getting honest and understanding my past was critical for continual recovery. Helping my peers and forgiving myself of shame, guilt and remorse was vital for happiness and clear thinking. Sober now for 13 years, I stand tall with humility. I have a beautiful wife and family with a wonderful career. I will be completing a Masters Degree in psychotherapy with drug addiction as my specialty in one year. I will always be grateful to Beacon House for showing me how to get my spirit back and for guiding me to my full potential and purpose in life. Always with love, thank you Beacon House!!! By the way, I did get off parole. Smile!!

I entered the Beacon House as a resident in 1997 at 47 years old. I was literally a dying man due to drug and alcohol addiction for over 30 years of my life. The Beacon House challenged me to do the work of recovery, nurtured me throughout the process, motivated me to help others, and inspired me to live a purpose driven life. I continue to visit the Beacon House frequently and am avidly inolved with The Beacon House Alumin Association as many alumni are, as well. I am blessed to be employed as a counselor and grateful to have the opportunity to THANK THE BEACON HOUSE for being here and changing lives, helping the community, and changing my life.

I first learned of Beacon House through Don Wrigley who invited me to San Pedro to help me with my own non-profit. Don was kind enough to give me the complete tour and introduce me to many people who once was a residence and now are back as volunteers. Beacon House is an inspiration to us all. Wouldn't the world be a better place if helping others was our focus. God Bless you Don and Beacon House

I first learned about the Beacon House through one of their monthly "Bistro Nights" where the men serve delicious meals and provide great customer service. During that event is where I got an insight about the organization. All the men there were humble and grateful. One of the current staff members mentioned that he went through the program and wanted to give back by joining the staff. I will continue to attend their "Bistro Nights," which provides yummy food and great real-life skills.

The Beacon House has given me an opportunity to succeed at life. I entered the house a broken man, bankrupt of any positive aspect of human self respect, and suicidal. The Beacon House staff guided me on working recovery, daily routines, checks and balances, positive reinforcement and a love for life. I have my daughter back into my life, I am employed, I have a home, with the bills paid on time, I have a car with legal insurance, registered, and licensed. To a person with normal responsibility tendencies, this seems probably.........small, but to a person like myself, these simple daily responsibilities were beyond my comprehension and ability. I am forever grateful to The Beacon House Association of San Pedro, its staff, and ALL clients, new and old. This program taught me the simple, basic characteristics to become a productive and responsible member of society, friend, and a father to my daughter.

The Beacon House saved my family by saving my brother's life. I cannot say enough good things about this organization. My brother and family suffered for decades because of his alcohol and drug abuse. After his time at Beacon House, he is a new man, and we are blessed to have our family back together again! I thank God for the Beacon House Association, and it is my privilege to help them in any way I can.

I entered the Beacon House in 2005 after various attempts at being admitted elsewhere (i'm an alcoholic; i was looking for an easier softer way), however, each attempt was met with "you don't meet criteria" (aka you're unisured) or "our waiting list is three months long, please call us daily to check in". Ultimately, the disease of alcoholism beat me into a state of reasonableness and i called Beacon House. They didn't tell me call back....they didn't ask me for my insurance....they asked me, "Are you willing to go to any length for victory over alcohol?" I said yes even though i didn't know what that would entail. BEST THING I EVER DID IN MY LIFE!!!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you, Beacon House. I wil never be able to repay what you have given me, but Lord knows i'm gonna try. BEACON HOUSE MANTRA.....REACH FORWARD/GIVE BACK

The Beacon House Association of San Pedro has helped many men, families, and the community over the past 40 years. Their high success rate is achieved by the social model, peer to peer style program. They speak the language of the heart. Men who arrive at Beacon House are broken men, bankrupt of any dignity, self respect, love for life or spirit. They are given a second chance in life, learn to live on life's terms, and become respectable, responsible members of society.

I will be forever grateful for all I learned at the Beacon House. After 35 years of undocumented substance abuse (the last 5 were homeless) I reached a point in my life where I wanted the pain to end. The way I saw it I had two choices, ask for help or step out in front of an express bus on 7th Street in Long Beach. On my knees one night I ask God for help, making a deal with Him if this madness was taken away I would do whatever He wanted for the rest of my life. Doors began to open, 21 days in the VA Hospital then to the Beacon House. I was the first person to graduate their 6 month program in 9 1/2 months. I was held back a couple graduations because they (Bill) saw fit to not let me graduate because there was still work for me to do on me. I did not agree at the time but by Feb. of 1999 I realized what I needed to do and followed the directions set in front of me. After graduation I went back to school at Univ. Ca, Dominguez Hills to get a certificate in Drug and Alcohol Counseling, getting on the road fulfilling the promise I made on my knees in April of 1998. I just retired from the Court of Justice in Kentucky as a Program Supervisor for one of their Drug Courts. I still continue to fulfill the promise I made in helping others with the disease of addiction. At one time I had an office next to my Drug Court Judge and had his security code to get into his office when I needed something. Whoever would have thought? My life is very good because as long as I continue to do what I agreed to do and not drink I do not have to worry about the next day. Beacon House taught me how to live happy, joyous and free from alcoholism. Thanks

The Beacon House is the epitome of social model that creates a warm and safe environment for participa nts to recover from sometimes decades of abuse and trauma. The Staff takes the time to assist the men in not only recovery from drug and alcohol dependence, but the development of good character that allows them to leave there better husbands, Fathers, sons, employers, employees, friends, and community members. Hats off to the Beacon House. They should be cloned and placed strategically throughout the United States.

Since being a resident at the Beacon House, I have been sober for 3 years, reunited with my family, and interning as a drug & alcohol counselor while attending CSUDH. The Beacon House's multi-faceted approach of community service, counseling, peer support, and AA 12 step work creates prodigious results not common in this field. I have been afforded comprehensive reintegration support by allowing the time to attend college while focusing on my recovery so I can leave treatment as a functioning member of society. It is only through the Beacon House that I am where I'm at in life, I arrived at the Beacon House August 9th, 2008 emotionally a wreck and with no coping skills for life. They took me in without any question of how I was going to pay for my stay there. I was told that if I followed their directions and gave myself a chance to have a better life it was going to happened. It was a long road of ups and downs but that was only of my own doings. It wasn't until I stopped the fighting of the directions of staff that life started to get better for me. There was some kind of change in my life and I didn't want that to change and it didn't. I was giving the chance to finish the primary program and move into the second phase of the program to continue my journey there. I was able to go to collage and finish with a A.S Degree in Culinary Arts and move on to find a job and move on from the house. I am so grateful what the Beacon House has done for me, it showed me how to change my life for the better and live a better life.

There are not enough words that express my gratefulness for what the Beacon House has given me. Before I came to the house I was homeless and out of answers, all others had failed. I was a broken man. I was ready to go back to prison for the rest of my life or kill myself with my drug use. But I get here and was told that if I follow their direction and be willing to change my life would get better. I’d like to say that I followed the directions to a tee, but that is why the Beacon House is so unique they allow you to come in and make mistakes so they can help you see the change that needs to take place. And it has, today I have been sober for two years, I have my family back in my life, and I’m able to go school today to become a chef something I have always wanted to do. And some day I plan to run a non-profit kitchen to feed people in need. THANK YOU BEACON HOUSE!

I went to the Beacon House in 2008. It was a very depressing and difficult situation to deal with. Even though I was willing and worked hard I felt as though the members who had been there longer singled me out and would really make things hard on the newer individuals that were there voluntarily. Also most were there through drug court and had a lot to lose if removed from the program those people would make it hard on the ones who were there on their own free will. Overall I was very depressed while at the BH and really could not confide with anybody without total beratement. On more than one occasion my medication was being withheld by the other patients or staff. After a long weekend [Christmas] my meds were withheld and on Sunday night while at a meeting another program person was very derogatory after I received a 90 day chip and I had an emotional meltdown already in a depressive state I seriously was at an end. Subsequently the next day I was removed from the program. It was a very cult like atmosphere that is geared toward the courts approval so they can have a continuous supply of addicts whom are not very motivated to change but very motivated to program and play the game which most are very good at playing since they spent plenty of time in prison. I have been sober two years now thank God and no thanks to beacon house. They have far more dropouts than success story's. The numbers are fudged and the successes are few. Overall I would say this program works if you are afraid to go back to the pen.

Beacon House is a service that is an asset to any community. Without such services I would not be where I am today. The staff as well as the surrounding community activities are what helps to keep the clients grounded and strive to better themselves. The program is a lesson that sticks with you, it helps you to stay focused. I thought I could beat my sickness on my own. I couldn't, I tried the VA, and serveal other programs, but not until I went to Beacon House did I understand what I was facing, you see I was old when I went into my addiction, therefore I thought I knew everything, I could stop when ever I wanted to, I lied to myself and my family. I think my last resort was Beacon house and when I first went there I was a hot shot and hard headed. However once I began to listen and work the program I began to see a light at the end of the tunnel, before I was in a cave of darkness and didn't know it. I continue to live by the program I was taught at Beacon House one day at a time. I encourage the program and I know for a fact anyone that is seeking help that ends up on Beacon House door step will succeed if they believe in the program, stay focus, follow the rules and do there part to beat the addiction, will forever be grateful to Beacon House I know I am and so is my family I put them through hell. I have been clean going on 9 years and owe a very large debt to Beacon House for my well being.

August 3rd, 1998 is my Clean & Sober date. I was referred by the Long Beach VA medical Center. I was 48years old and the King of my Kingdom, a very large ego with low self-esteem. I had always lived life on my terms; not anyone else's. This sanctuary brought God into my life and taught me how to become a compassionate member of society. I fought the process all the way, finally at five months under Jake S. & Bill M's direction I turned my will over and developed the faith and courage to just let go and learn how to follow another's direction.
I have been a positive part of the Beacon House program for this past 12.5 years coming to the House each day in the morning and evening. There have been many changes during these years, most of them have been very good. I would make one suggestion, a very high amount of the Alumni don't come around, this is true. I have heard them say they are living a good life and if Staff doesn't particularly care for how they are presently living they are made to feel unwelcome. I have seen good clean & sober Alumni be told they can't be in the pit for simple things like they are wearing sunglasses or are wearing a hat backwards. When they are told to take sunglasses off or turn hat around they say ok then don't come back. I still facillitate Monday night phase II peer group and do my best to follow the rules of primary, sometimes I fall short. I facillitated a wednesday feelings group for nine years until the Program Director decided to cancel the group when I was on vacation one year. I also have been facillitating an Alumni Panel for primary this past eight years. I am grateful for all these opportunities to give back to the men of The Beacon House. The Beacon House is a place where men become responsible, active, positive members of Society.

Arriving at the Beacon House, I was a border line sociopath with trust for no one including myself. Totally dishonest to self and others, delusional, irrational and most of all fearful and insecure of social acceptance, family relationships, financial responsibilities, and having a secure safe place to live. I was unable to accept the truth about my life and actions early on in my recovery, but with patience, tolerance and love from peers, sponsor, staff and alumni, I was able to accept some facts about myself, which in-turn became assets I use to help others in a seemingly hopeless state of mind and body. Today, I am a healthy member of society with a growing faith in a power greater than myself which guides me through life to seek out and help others without self-seeking motives. I recommend the Beacon House for anyone looking for the truth within

To get an accurate review you really need to ask some of the older Alumni. There is no doubt that Beacon House is great at what it does but it has miles to go in the way do they it. The Beacon House is great at churning out great short term success stories but the program's lack of transitional services is evident in their long term numbers. And not just in the number of Alumni that have stayed sober, but the number who actively participate in mentoring the men in the program. The Beacon House has done a great job of walling itself off from the rest of the world and building a cult-like environment. This may be helpful in the short term but I am still dealing with the long term effects of this social isolation. This program would be much more effective if certain personalities weren't given such a dominant voice and the men were aloud to interact with Alumni that have wondered down different paths. This is where the program breaks down. I'm sure that if you did a study you would find that a great majority of the Alumni who have long term sobriety are those who rejected the dominant social hierarchy and "suggested" courses of action. The fact that the men in primary and "second phase" are not allowed to tap into that wealth of experience is disheartening to say the least. It's frustrating because I feel i have a lot to offer but I cannot simply .

Men who were without hope find their moral compass and its gratifying to watch them forge an entirely new path in the world. The Beacon House took me in with open arms and provided me with everything i could ever need and way more. I have grown here, changed my behavior, formed relationships, and have learned to become and honest productive member of society. Today i now have enrolled in college, building a relationship back with my family and have happiness and a zest for life. The Beacon House has helped turn a suicidal man at age 40 with 25 years of drug addiction into a hopefully grown man with a foundation to live his life with principals. The Beacon House is extreamly unique and i have been to 7 other treatment rehabs and there is nothing that offers treatment like this. I will be forever grateful and i only hope this treatment can be offered to people for a longtime coming.

When my brother entered The Beacon House Program in 2003 I was excited that he was continuing his road to recovery; i had witnessed several relapses...but his attitude was different this time and i became hope-filled again! This Program seemed different and now seven years later i can say that The Beacon House is different!!! HOPE became a reality as i witnessed the transformation tha i gleaned every time i was invited to attend an event; everything from the free community wide Thanksgivings to experiencing the leadership of The Beacon House's community involvement through-out the South Bay, and, I am thankful for the opportunity to participate as a volunteer at the 2008 community Thanksgiving. I generally have felt the genuine spirit of well being and care that clients and staff have for each other and visitors as well.there are so many reasons for me to be thankful for The Beacon House but most importantly is that I am at least 99.999% sure that my brother will remain clean,sober,self-ssupporting,a contributing member of society and his immediate and extended community and above all he is an amazing father to his three children. It gives me joy to to write this review and i pray that The Beacon House continues and is able to expand so, that many others in need will be able to experience not only the program, but the success of the program in their life.

When I came to the house in 2006, I was utterly broken. I was 24 years old and had no hope for anything further out of life other than being an addict. I actually came straight from another program where I had stayed for 60 days. It was at the other treatment program where I realized how hopeless I was. Even with rehab, most addicts and alcoholics are screwed. I wasn't sure what the Beacon House could offer me but all they asked for was some willingness and I was given a guarantee that if I did what I was told, my life would improve. I didn't do everything they told me perfectly but I tried. Thanks to the house, I was finally able to find a decent path in life. I finished school at the house and finally got my B.A. I am now in an MBA program and have a great job with a bunch of friends. I learned from the men at the house how to become a human being, a friend, a brother, a son, and an uncle. I cannot express my gratitude enough in words of what this place has given me and the opportunities that were afforded me because God saw fit for such an institution to exist.

I abused alcohol and drugs for over 20 years of my life. I wanted to stop many times but never could pull it off. I tried evey imaginable way to stop I mean I have been baptized, hands laid on me, oil poured over my head, abstinence and I can not count the many times I tried willpower but all to no avail. I tried treatment programs 5 times and still kept using until I took a suggestion and tried the house. I came with the the idea that I knew something and was exicted about what I was going to bring to the house. When I got there they said something so simple just follow some simple directions and I gurantee your life will change. Nobody ever guranteed me anything in recovery so I was out to prove them wrong. Now nine years later I am so glad they were right. God Bless Beacon House and all that are associated with them.

I arrived at the Beacon House after 20 years of active alcoholism and addiction at the age of 32. I was asked to give the program a small amount of willingness and in return I received a life beyond my imagination. I started as an irresponsible, angry, selfish human just barely existing and became kind, loving and responsible man who lives life to the fullest. I owe my new life to the staff at this incredible non-profit. I was so touched by all they did for me I now get to work in the non-profit sector, pass along what was given to me so graciously by the Beacon House. Through their experience and wisdom, I was given the opportunity to experience my life as it was meant to be experienced

I came to the Beacon House after 22 years of active drug and alcohol addiction and criminal behavior. I had spent 10 years of my adult life and 4 of my adolesence in correctional facilities for drugs and violence. The Beacon House took my sliver of willingness to change and transformed it into a man of character who is honest, gentle and kind. I owe my life to this place and could not give back in two lifetimes what they have given me, but i'm gonna try.

The Beacon House Association of San Pedro is a treatment facility for men who are suffering from alcohol and drug addiction. I know this because I am one of those men who suffers from this disease and is a current resident of this program. I found my way here by another set of circumstances which led me to a friend dropping me off, them being tired of me sleeping on their couch! As funny as this might sound it is a way of life that I had been involved in for a number of years. You see, I take advantage of people around me. Not only that I go in and out of prison, abandon my kids, involved with gangs. That was me then, this is me now-responsible person in the community, reunification with my kids, chasing a career in welding, and most important to me is being a good example to those who are around me. All this I owe to the Beacon House for providing me with the safe environment necessary for one who suffers from a disease to get the help they need.Thank You.

The Beacon House Association of San Pedro is a wonderful organization that I owe my life to. Lost, hopeless with drugs and alcohol my solution for life and having a life on the streets awaiting me I made it to the Beacon House. They provided me with a safe place to learn what my real problem is and gave me the tools necessary to live a healthy and productive life without drugs and alcohol. I was given the opportunity to obtain an associates degree which led me to a great job and reconciliation with my children; which includes my youngest daughter living with me! The Beacon House not only repairs men it also provides needed support for the community by providing assistance that increases the well being for all the people in the local area and throughout the city. I now have 7 years clean and sober and continue to participate with helping the Beacon House assist men with getting a real life and support the community.

I went to the beacon house 2 years ago a broken man. I had no hope for a better life. after a year in the primary program my life has changed dramattically. I have my family back in my life, I'm going back to school and i have a set of principles that I live by. I've truly been shown a new way to live from the guys in the beacon house association. There is no other place i've ever been to or heard of that even comes close to the way the beacon house changes lives and what they give back to the community is unparaleled. I'm forever greatful to the beacon house and those who help make it possible for the house to do what it does.

The reason I am living a purpouseful life today is the result of my having been so very fortunate for my association both as a resident and alumni of the Beacon House. I landed at the Beacon House a broken, pathetic man. I was fearful of life as I had lived it as an alcoholic and addict over 30 years and had no idea how to live life on life's terms. The Beacon House welcomed me, embraced me, guided me, nurtured me, and helped me become a man of principle - filled with love and purpose. My gratitude to the House is immeasureable and I hope to continue to help it and the men there as much as they have and continue to help me.

I came to the Beacon House like so many of my Beaconero brothers. Beat down into submission by my self destructiveness and imprisonment to my alcoholism, and drug addictions. My disease put me through four major life threatening operations , jail time, nuthouses, homelessness and disconnected family. The House taught me that it is epicentered with a definite spiritual connection that restores lives, and rejuvenates opportunity that was lost rotting in the underbelly of alcohol and drug abuse. First i was shown and taught humility which i learned and am still learning is the key to willingness. I was shown by the men before me that there was hope, even for me. I was taught from the start to help others even though my selfishness rejected it. The Beacon House gave me the avenue to self truth and self honesty on which i was introduced and taught the 12 Step program , which enabled me to gain Principles in my life. I was given a tool bag with tools to assist me in coping with a new way of thinking and living. I was at the house for almost 5 yrs. I did the mission statement and moved on the way it was laid out! In that time i was blessed with the opportunity to learn Graphic Design, which i make a living doing now!, and learn how to do life on life's terms. I was taught that i do not have to run-away from anything. Today i am so grateful to the Beacon House, and all the staff, which taught me that gratitude is manifested through action so i respond to the call of writing a review. I could never give back enough to the House of what was given to me. I am an alumni 8 yrs. sober The last house on the Block!

I was homeless, unemployable and had no spirituality whatsoever. I learned of the Beacon House by way of the Ventura county stand down in 2002. I was afforded and blessed with the opportunity to become a part of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Multiples of D.U.I.'s judicial issues galore. Spent 13 months in primary learning how to get out of self and give back unequivically. To follow directions from someone else. At the age of 42? No way. But it works. And works well. I went on to college, get my life in order, and become a general contractor. Developed a stronger relation with God and learned how to be a friend and man. Then forgot where I came from. But stayed in touch with the friends I had made there at the Beacon House, which brought was instrumental in bringing me back around. Today I am once again in the process of recovery. A recovery I would not, could not know or have known had it not been for the Beacon House. I am proud to be alumni of the Beacon House and will ALWAYS carry the principles I learned there through the men and staff. Thank you Beacon House. Barry

I arrived at the doors of the Beacon House on Sept 13,2006. I was a broken and desperate person willing to go to any length to break this vicious cycle of addiction. It was though the Beacon House that I learned to serve my fellow man. By learning to serve my fellow man and to become willing to be of service where ever needed this tool is what led me to be able to break the cycle of alcoholism. I must say that some of my most fondest memories of life were from being a member of the Beacon House. By being a part of everything I could at the Beacon House gave me the tools that I have today that I apply to my career and everday life. Even though I left the Beacon House after 2 years in May 2008, I must say that I truely miss it each and every day. I recommend this program to anyone who is seriously committed and willing to go to any lengths to get clean and sober. I owe the life that I have today to the Beacon House.

When I first came to the Beacon House I was suicidal and hopeless. I saw no way of getting out of my predicament. I needed something different and was willing to try the Beacon House program of action. The moment I arrived I was welcomed by men who were offering me clothes and food. For the first time in my life I felt safe. Through the process of the program I started to gain hope and see life in a different light. I was able to participate in community activities where I had a sense of purpose. The genuine care and love this house has demonstrated towards me is undeniable. I am now an intern at the house and attending Cal State Dominguez Hills this fall to pursue a career in counseling. I have found God and see his works daily. This house is nothing short of a miracle. I continuously see men recover from hopeless states and grow towards an active lifestyle where they help other men. I want to thank this house for the opportunity it has given me.

My name is David Lee Ryst, I entered the Beacon House Jan 28th 2005. It was a friday and their was a memorial service for one of residents who had recently passed away due to illness. I saw he's family and friends and they all said great things about the Beacon House and thanked them from the bottom of their hearts for making a great man of their brother, son, and friend. I knew from that night this place was no ordinary Treatment Center. When i first became a resident i was 18 years old, i was homesless, scared, under wieght, and headed down a path that i couldnt bare. The majority of the residence at the time were middle or older age. I thought i was out of place. Over time the residence and staff quickly showed me i was not alone and that hope was just around the corner. After several months of service, love, and fellowship i realized though my live had become quite a joke, i was in the ride place to become a better person. My stay at the Beacon House has become the greatest part of my live and i truly beleive with out a shadow of a doubt will be the best experience of my live to come. I was 18, lost, scared, hopeless and running from live. Today 5 years later the Beacon House has transoformed me into a man, with hope, strength, courage, a GED, a College degree, a career, responsiblity, and a civil servant to my community. I have cleaned up the wreckage of my past as i try to continue a principaled life and show others how i transformed. The Beacon House has thought me live lessons that most will never learn. i have seen a level of love that i thought didnt exist. The Beacon House showed me a level of responsiblity to my community, work, friends, family and mankind. The age of miracles is still with us, just visit 1003 s. Beacon st, San pedro CA on any given day and i will promise you a miracle or two. -David

I have worked with many recovery centers most of them for profit. I have never seen such a group of dedicated staff as well as residents, all working as a group with one goal in mind and that is to help the clients and residents come back a place in their lives where they can get back on track and live a productive as well as educated life. It would be an honor to work with this group of dedicated men once again I did a stop smoking and life enhancement program for the facility once a month with great success, but as with many non-profits they had to allocate their resources to other areas. This program is a cut above and works very well because they think outside the box and that make their program work. In order for them to keep such an outstanding program alive, funding is the only way they will be able to be around to keep changing lives for the better. One reason the program has been so successful is that the men have many opportunities to share generously with the community. They clean up around town, serve meals to the homeless, help with set up and crowd control at community events, and volunteer their time in countless other ways. People in San Pedro appreciate the men of Beacon House.

I had no avenues left to follow and burned every bridge behind me. Beacon House gave me hope, allowed me to build relationships, and do esteemable acts. I believed in their mission statement and put everything I had into it. I was able to work the steps, share with others, sponsor men and mentor others. I received a certificate from California State University Dominguez Hills, passed my state exam through Breining Institute and recieved my counselor registration. I came to the Beacon House seven years ago a broken man. In the throngs of drug addiction I had lost my home, friends, family and everything I held dear to me due to a life a drugs. I was a product of prison, and many a so-called rehabs, and was on my last legs. When I had no where else to turn, the Beacon House took me into the life. More than just a Rehabilitation center, the treated me like family, and not only gave me the tools I needed to fight my addiction, they taught me what it was to a normal member of society, a freind, a parent, a family member. The encoureged me to help others and gave time to get my life togther, and seek and education.....something that I never had before. The encouraged me to live out my dreams in the second chance at life I had been given. By following the directions, ideals, and values the house gave me(directions I still follow to this day) I was able to beat my addiction, and live a life I've always wanted to live. Now close to getting my masters degree in English, work at a community college, I am engaged to be married, and have a full wonderful life....one that includes family friends both new and old, and am a model peer to those I teach and hang out with.....none of this would be possible without the help and guidance of the Beacon House.

From the very first interview I was told that I would be participating DAILY in service for someone other than myself. I began by cleaning the streets of San Pedro, and continued doing community service throughout Los Angeles County, and the action taught me about the paradox of giving to receive. Not a religious concept, but a spiritual one indeed. This was a part of the foundation building that is done by action, rather than talking (talking accomplishes little). Now there are some things that I can do to feel good about myself, and because the Beacon House took the time to show me the way, I won't have to drink again- if I do some simple things. As a result of my stay at the Beacon House, I haven’t had a drink in over 5 and a half years, and I have just graduated Harbor College with the President's Distinguished Honor, after being homeless for 20 years of my life! It doesn't need saying that they saved my life, but I need to point out that I never was asked about money, because the Beacon House will not discuss money or billing with ANY primary resident except to point out that in the face of our disease, we only should concern ourselves with how to save our own lives. I am proud to say that I am Alumnus of the Beacon House, and my name is David S.

I still teach an intro to college class for the men at the Beacon House and their sister organization, the House of Hope. I was a man that thought I loved my wife and children and figured that the meth i was smoking was my only problem. I couldnt stand my life or myself and using drugs was the only way to escape my problems. I thought the world was against me. After a family intervention, I called the Beacon House. They took me in without asking for a dime, all I had to do was be willing to go to any lengths for my recovery. It was the hardest work i've ever done. through social model, I had to take a good look at myself(it wasn't pretty). In a relatively short period of time, I had to learn to become a man and make grown man decisions. Although I was there 2.5 yrs I Was asked to leave the House because I wasn't spending enough time with the men. I was mad at that staff member for not wanting any contact with me, yet It isn't about me. it's about the men that are changing their lives at that blessed house. today I get to be a father, and husband. I am a productive member(ASE certified auto mechanic) of society and I feel the best i have ever felt about myself. It is all because of the wonderful people at the Beacon House that never gave up on me. Thank You -Raul Diaz-

The Beacon House Asoc. of San Pedro takes men who are broken and lost and provides a path for these men to retrieve what had been lost through alcoholism and drug addiction. The men of The Beacon House receive group and individual counseling, and attend a minimum of (10) 12-Step meetings per week. All men attend parenting classes, anger management classes, relapse prevention classes, alcohol and drug awareness classes as well as educational and vocational guidance. Every man in the Beacon House learns the esteem building value of giving back and contributes 15-35 hours per week to community service. All toll the men of The Beacon House contribute over 45,000 hours per year to other nonprofits, faith based, and community organizations at an estimated $500,000 annually. When the men graduate the primary phase of the program they can elect to continue on to phase II where they spend an additional 18-36 months going to school or vocational training to enhance their employability. When this phase is completed men are ready to leave The Beacon House Asoc. with a Job, theier own home, transportation and some money in the bank. As an alumni he is invited back to share his experience with those that come behind. I know of no other organization that commits to this level of recovery. It is no wonder that 88% of the men who stay long enough to complete the program as prescribed never drink or use drugs again. Never....

I am a former client and current employee of the Beacon Association of San Pedro. I was sent here to continue my treatment and recovery from another program. I had not other place to go, no money and no one who would take me. The Beacon House opened its' doors and its' arms to me and did not ask me for anything in return other than I be willing to learn, follow a few simple directions and help others. My life before had been devastated by my alcoholism and drug addiction. I had nothing to give or so I thought. What I learned here is that if I had one day sober I can help the new man in the house. The program gave me an opportunity to get back on my feet and become self-supporting and independent. I now work here and I cannot get enough of it. Each day brings a new experience and new challenges but it never gets old.

Need help?
