Review for Beacon House Association of San Pedro, San Pedro, CA, USA
When I came to the house in 2006, I was utterly broken. I was 24 years old and had no hope for anything further out of life other than being an addict. I actually came straight from another program where I had stayed for 60 days. It was at the other treatment program where I realized how hopeless I was. Even with rehab, most addicts and alcoholics are screwed. I wasn't sure what the Beacon House could offer me but all they asked for was some willingness and I was given a guarantee that if I did what I was told, my life would improve. I didn't do everything they told me perfectly but I tried. Thanks to the house, I was finally able to find a decent path in life. I finished school at the house and finally got my B.A. I am now in an MBA program and have a great job with a bunch of friends. I learned from the men at the house how to become a human being, a friend, a brother, a son, and an uncle. I cannot express my gratitude enough in words of what this place has given me and the opportunities that were afforded me because God saw fit for such an institution to exist.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
my life, the lives of hundreds of men, and the community around them as well as the Long Beach and Los Angeles area.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
find other revenues for funding so they could expand further and offer this rare opportunity to a lot more men.
What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
the friendships, the people, the administrators, the experiences at community events.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
incredibly effective whether they were paper pushers, counselors, or other support staff.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
operate for less than 10 years given the current costs of operations. Nevertheless, in that time frame, they would positively affect thousands of lives and tens of thousands of others that came into contact with those individuals.
Ways to make it better...
the program had the funds to be larger as this would have afforded even more unique experiences that I still cherish today.
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
size and budget constraints.
One thing I'd also say is that...
the Beacon House is an incredible model. If a master's thesis on sociology were done on how the place works and how it changes peoples outlooks and lives, it would be incredible, yet offer just a tiny clue into what makes this organization so effective.
