Review for Beacon House Association of San Pedro, San Pedro, CA, USA
They let me stay 5 years, which gave me the chance to not only work on my recovery foundation, but to get a formal education. I was a commercial fisherman before getting clean, and now I counsel and teach at a local community college. I still teach an intro to college class for the men at the Beacon House and their sister organization, the House of Hope. I am currently coming up on 13 years, and without the time they gave me to work on myself, I don't know how it would have turned out.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
Every area of my life. I learned to live by societys rules, and keep the principles of the program my number 1 program of living. I am married, have three grown stepdaughters, and two wonderful grandkids who have never seen me loaded.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
Diversify the expiences of the men. They now are on a much 'tighter rope' than when I was in the house. We could choose sponsors and fellowships to attend. NOt true now. Also, the second phase men seem less prepared to move out, so better after care.
What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
the support of the men in the House. I still go to meetings with the same guys I was in primary with.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
Varied. There was, and is, need for better staff education and oversite.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
Send it's staff for formal schooling and licencing. They could also expand the facilities to incluld the model outside of the one San Pedro location.
Ways to make it better...
The staff was better trained
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
financial.
One thing I'd also say is that...
I still think that this is the best program in the South Bay/Harbor Area. It is not for people who are not serious about their recovery, however. Don't come here if your plans are to socialize by the seashore...
How frequently have you been involved with the organization?
About every month
When was your last experience with this nonprofit?
2010
