This organization is not a simple encyclopedia about drugs. It is not a forum or website were drugs are sponsored as positive. It is a complete guide full of information, data, statistics, reviews, harm reduction advice to the medicinal, spiritual or recreational use of psychoactive substances. It lists with complete sources all the negative and positive impact of these substances. I'm sure if anybody who has ever used or will ever use psychoactives had visited and learned what he could on this website, there would be no deaths, probably even no addictions. Drug education is one of the most important issues of our generation. I fully support and respect erowid for all the benefits it has brought me, my friends and many other around the world.

1. Drugs can be dangerous, especially if you are uninformed as to their nature.
2. Generally, people will use drugs no matter what legal or health risks are present.
I begin like this because I believe the initial reaction to a group like Erowid would be negative, often times this type of group could be seen as enabling dangerous drug use. It is important to realize that Erowid plays a crucial role in our society, one where many among us are temped to experience various substances. Erowid provides the exact type of information necessary for risk reduction and in a format that is easily digestible and accessible. It is not likely that we will ever know the number of lives that Erowid has saved indirectly through its provision of this information, but there can be no doubt their impact has been universally positive and in some cases, life changing. In a world run by information, Erowid yields their vast arsenal of it to the people. This is the kind of organization that truly exhibits the sort of vigorous generosity that we would hope for from a nonprofit.

This nonprofit has saved lives and brain cells with accurate, factual, and realistic information. When this site covers a chemical, it often has the best online material for harm reduction. The people who contribute make a big difference and don't encourage high risk behavior. I hope it continues to gather information on all phycoactive chemicals. If you have information and experiences that are well documented, contribute. It needs harm reduction info for new rcs that are going around, I don't want anyone hurt/killed because they winged a dose not knowing what harmful ranges are.
When i was searching on Internet about my problems (heroin addiction) an Erowid site was most helpfull. I found much more information about an issue that i couldnt find anywhere else and all in one site. Many usefull links.
Now when my problem is solved, for about two years with non heroin taken I still go on to Erowid´s site to learn somethig usefull and always do find something new, about my problems or other usefull info.

In my personal experience, Erowid helped me ease fear about the comsumption of psychedelics like Cannabis and LSD, and helped me to correctly asses the kind of drugs that I was ingesting. I avoided what could have been a lethal dose of 25I-NBOMe thanks to ts descriptions and warnings about 25I being sold as LSD. Without Erowid, there would be a lot more ignorance about psychoactive drugs, and there's no doubt in my mind that this site's existence has prevented at least hundreds of injuries and deaths -- it's hard to measure of course, but it could be in the thousands or tens of thousands. The Erowid database, particularly the experiences vault, is invaluable information. I am not a drug user. Indeed, I work in the correctional system as a substance and mental health counselor. But the "war on drugs" Is comprised of ostriches with their head in the sand. Erowid helps people make informed choices - the pleasant effects, yes, but also the trainwreck deadly combinations. The reason why i put this as "Far exceeds expectations" is because 1) Erowid is a massive database that is nowhere nearly complete in growing 2) Erowid is by far the most reliable source of drug information i have found and 3) Erowid produces a great amount of information available to the public. It is a shame that so many Academic institutions ban the website. It's a massive loss for objective truth on psychoactives. The more they are censored the more legitimate sources of information are limited for students of all ages (primarily of that of college).

In a society which tries to curtail individual liberties by saying what an individual may or may not ingest of their own free choice, a lot of misleading and in many cases wholly false information is in the public domain. Erowid gives unbiased information along with real user experiences which enable the discerning user and explorer of the inner mind the type of experience he or she may expect, along with dosages and other information regarding personal safety.
This I am certain has helped numerous people to make their own personal enquiries safely, and prevented unnecessary hospitalisation or even death through lack of information.
They provide a great service and valuable resource along with forums anyone can contribute to thus ever widening the resource and keeping it up to date.

Erowid is such an amazing resource to have. I remember when I first discovered it I was completely shocked to find there were such intelligible substance users (not abusers) whom shared all of their experiences and decades of knowledge and research and had it all compiled into one easily accessible webspace. Many, many substance users are completely ignorant and like to claim they know everything about a substance when in fact they know nothing. I once had someone tell me they took a hydrocodone pill with 325 mg of hydrocodone. I laughed, very hard. it was in fact a hydrocodone/acetaminophen combination. 325 mg acetaminophen and I believe 5 mg hydrocodone. 325 mg would have them dead. Anyway I am fortunate along with many other smart users to have this website available, I have learned much valuable information and if I come across a substance I am unsure of, I am able to look it up on erowid and avoid taking an unknown substance that I have no knowledge about. Also it has helped me avoid taking many substances that I would have likely not found enjoyable, it is great to have the experience reports available and to learn from others mistakes, although it seems most of erowid's users are quite intelligent. I found this website at age 14 after having tried marijuana. It opened up a whole new window of knowledge that helped me to make informed decisions about my substance use, including the decision to put off trying harder drugs until I was 18. To this day I still refer people who are making their decisions about substances based on here say, propaganda or complete ignorance. Erowid is doing the community a service by far.
1 of my children is a sophomore in college and his sister is a junior in a college 4 states away from either of us. Neither ever had a prescription until high school and for my son it was topical a few times for ringworm he caught when he wrestled over as a freshman and again junior and senior year. His senior year a whole team had to forfeit an entire season when the whole team got scabies. I have never heard of anyone younger than 50 having scabies let alone 30 healthy athletes, but I knew then there was a good reason I boycotted the chicken pox vaccination for my both children because it was stupid to put that sort of chemical that has long term effects into anyone and look...around 10 years later look what we have now. As for my daughter, her senior year her doctor wrote her first prescription for a natural topical cream for acne she didn't want seen at senior prom. I raised them to never assume a doctor will know how you respond to a prescription and if you can seek to educate yourself you would know why it is given to you and worth the risk...And that would go for any sort of drug from any person. And they usually have no idea what is even in the drug. My children drink if they want a beer or milk for breakfast and cook brownies for the chocolate or for the marijuana. Our rule is if you have to hide it or can't talk about it you know it is bad for you. And it is a really bad idea to find info from idiots trying to take your money (like most doctors and most drug dealers). I have been using your material to show them how drugs don 't kill people but if your stupid taking them it is obviously you causing your own death when you didn't need to trust "opinion" but facts like I would show them you had on your site. Thank you for helping my kids live to see another day. God bless you for helping me live to watch them become more amazing than I could ever imagine. It is important because a lot of the knowledge out there is propaganda designed to steer people away from a lot of these substances. By supplying information about the safe practice of recreational drug use, Erowid helps keep the community informed about how to responsibly use a substance that may have been abused or misused. Erowid most importantly admonishes responsibility and safety in drug use. This reverberates within the community and is helping to create a "drug culture" where its members function better in society and remain safe in there experimentation.
I really love Erowid! I've been using the site as a reference for years, and it's taught me quite a bit about the myriad of substances out there. It is so important that sites like this exist! It is a completely impartial place to better understand substances. It's interesting to read a users experience rather than read what a text book, whose writer has never been near to the substance, reports the effects.
Its the only place on the internet that combines main site with facts and collects "correct" info (much like a wikipedia) about various substances with an emphasis on empiricism - tests. So its the only site that besides various drug forums (where you have to rely on "high credibility forum users" to write info that is not easily found elsewhere) that has information about such substances. Not because most of them are illegal - but because it's so popular and specific that there is a great demand for information sharing but it's not readily available because of its very niche nature (specific/rare). Same goes for the various other specific sites (serial killer info, various electronic hardware hacking etc).
Best non-profit organization, hands down. They've saved lives and given people comfort with drug use. Ultimately, you cannot stop drug use, but you can promote harm reduction through knowledge.

Most drug information these days are with one goal, to make the violation of freedoms known as the War on Drugs seem good. They ignore the good and exaggerate the bad. Erowid gives the honest truth, doesn't ignore the good or ignore the bad and doesn't overstate either. It is a great resource for people who want the real truth about drugs, especially if they plan on using it and want to hear more than "it's bad".
There are a lot of on-line "sources of information"- most of which are worse than useless- in other words, the misinformation that they perpetuate actually causes harm- which is much worse than uselessness- which doesn't. Greetings. In my 8 years of own practice in psychology, i have always dealt solely with truth. The Scandinavian society generally does not have any educated information about any psychoactive nor herb, due to their own fear and, dare i say, ignorance on the subject.
After learning about Erowid in 2007 my work and further study became much more enriched and efficient since close to all the information on the site is indeed useful. Why is it useful? well
a) Because it is written by people who have learned the art of critical and independent thinking, further more they know how to put forth objective information regardless of other institutions ignorance.
b) Because it is documented, through trip reports, by people who have actually had an experiences with the substances described.
Psychoactives are among my more prevalent interests and nothing has helped me learn and gain very valuable information more than Erowid. It has everything I want to know and more on every imaginable substance and spiritual practice. I love Erowid and I will use it for a very long time.
My story is kind of odd... Being a meth addict for about a year now, I've been through almost everything I've heard people talk about, seeing evil stuff, hot flashes, all kind of weird stuff, but you know something, I will be straight up... It is called the Devils drug because it is period. Just how you see good things in life, you see bad things as well. It does cause evil spirits to attack you, control you, and yes, the devil does see you through a glass. The same glass you use to smoke. (Pipe). That's why they call it ice. I know a lot of meth users who have experience similar things like myself, except... I've defeated darkness one too many times. I'm i proud to say this? No. Because I know it's been through God. I wouldn't be able to do such thing alone. What led me to start meth? The lost of a friend, who hunted me trying to led me to his death site. I followed him, until I finally realize he wasn't just anyone. He is the morning star I cried for every night. Why did I defeat him? Because I love him, as the person I met, not who he really is. I still cannot accept him for who he is because honestly, love is blind. I refuse to accept his truth... My truth is only to advice you not to do this drug because it will haunt you. My life will probably never be normal again, even if I stop, but at least I know one thing... I will try to help as many as I can, because only God can save me, yet maybe it's my destiny. So, best advice, don't even try it. In my case, I tried it because I wanted to lose weight to impress him, now... If you knew me, I'm sexy, pretty, and alone. Why? Well because he's not gonna have anyone have his queen... In other words, I got the body, looks, and all his full undivided attention, remember, not knowing who he was...

I have used and supported EROWID for many years and it has only grown in its credibility and usefulness, now recognized as a reliable source by the academic community. As a college professor it is a site I recommend to all students as an accurate source of information for the various plants and other chemicals that naturally circulate on campuses. Their pill-ID section is a very important public service. EROWID is a necessary resource for relevant and reliable information that can help prevent drug related disasters through education.
Erowid provides the youth with a central area for controversial, yet vital information and help. A site such as Erowid astounds me because it takes on such coarse subject's such as drug use and synthesis but portrays them in an educational and professional way. Erowid helps guide the youth with their part taking threw experience vaults which provides a curious pupil with valuable insight that otherwise couldn't be granted without the pupils individual experience(s). With that being said we can understand that from a site such as this, comes a certain number of lives that have been saved. If Erowid was non- existent their would be loads of curious young adults today that would be mislead and deceased from something so humiliating such as a lack of education.
I have schizoaffective disorder. While I have been clean and sober for over 12 years now, I visit Erowid's Vault because it allows me to read various drug experiences, many of which are similar to some hallucinatory experiences I had while I was wandering homeless in the desert of the southwest America and parts of Mexico. I had done this while sober, but I was off my medications for schizophrenia, and predictably, I began to see and hear things (and even smell, taste, and feel things) that weren't really there. I think it is good to have a site like Erowid's, because it gives people the freedom to choose what they do with their bodies. I read the book "A Clockwork Orange" by Anthony Burgess. Its central theme is moral choice, or how people determine right from wrong, something that in my opinion differentiates humans from lower animals. Without the freedom to choose, we become more bestial and like brutes or even slaves of that part of nature which is oceanic chaos beneath the social masks we all wear.
Before I had ever even began smoking weed much less using a psychoactive chemical (such as LSD), I was afraid and had no ambition to do or ever try drugs. Since I discovered Erowid, I noticed from the data they provide for FREE (information that can save your life) that some psychoactives are completely safe and have been test since the initial synthesis of LSD by Hoffman. Anyone using, especially to those thinking about using, need to see this site. A little over a month ago I had a major breakthrough off of a highly popular psychoactive: LSD. But due to our morally conservative political landscape, drugs are only a theme of debate either in relation to; Our sad European record of death by overdose due to heroin injection, or the big open drug markets in the bigger city's, like ''Nygårdsparken'' in Bergen. I'm a psychonaut, I have many friends, and have known many friends who use recreational drugs. Erowid has been my almost exclusive source for drug related information since I began using drugs. I am a bit more scientific about my use than many of my friends were who got me into consciousness play. I researched the hell out of any drug I tried for a while before I tried them, and when I couldn't get my hands on anything new, I'd spend my time on mild substances like cannabis, wine and coffee, slowly perusing the site's incredible number of vaults. I learned the good and bad about a million things I'd never tried, and still haven't. And yet, as the years went by, a friend would tell me about a fun drug fueled night they had coming up, and I would remember something I read on erowid, and pass along the info. Through the education I gave myself through this site, I know without a doubt that I have saved the lives of at least 3 people, besides myself by having just a little extra knowledge.
We don't have to be statistics. Drug use doesn't have to be dangerous. With the proper tools like Erowid, we can end an era of misinformation and disinformation about drugs, and save lives instead of threatening them, or putting them behind bars.

Wonderful. This is badly needed drug harm reduction. Substances that humans have taken for as long as humans have existed are still being experimented with but there is no tribal knowledge left to provide proper context and safety measures, however in the age of the internet there is no excuse to have ignorance towards your drug use, this is where Erowid comes in. Coming from a full time college student, this database has proved itself to be invaluable. Not in the way of "Haha yeah, let's see what drugs I can take to get the coolest effects"; rather, it serves a very educational and unbiased source of drug (legal and illegal) information. The articles are well cited and kept up to date accordingly. This proves to be crucial, especially on a college campus in the 21st century, because, if I'm being honest, the usual methods of inebriation via alcohol and marijuana are largely a thing of the past. Now kids are taking all kinds of drugs, expanding out into consumption of synthetic "designer" drugs (2ci, 2cb, n-bome to name a few). With the presence of these research chemicals (rc's) on campus, comes their accompanying side effects and potential health hazards. Erowid always has reliable information on these substances, no matter how recently they've fallen into the hands of the public. I assist in risk management in a Fraternity and have consulted Erowid when making the decision of whether or not it is necessary to request medical intervention. All in all, it is a great site that truly does save lives, albeit indirectly.
The article "The L.E.S.S. Method: A Measured Approach to Oral Cannabis" mentions how "dangerous" and possible it is to "overdose" when eating cannabis.
It should mention that smoking a joint while effected by Oral Cannabis, will stop the effects of the Oral Cannabis, and the only effect from then on will be from the smoked joint.
SIMPLE: if you want to stop the experience from Oral Cannabis, smoke some.
Also: there is no mention of the decarboxylation required to activate the THCA to THC.

Erowid is an extremely well-organized, factually impartial source of information considering drugs of all kinds. In a world pervaded by politically motivated misinformation, the reliability of Erowid has literally changed my life. Had I not done research on such subjects as LSD there, I would not be living as happy a life as i am; I'd still be thinking that smoking one joint will give anyone lung cancer and that psilocybin eats holes in one's brain. Such propagandist nonsense only confuses the public and discredits the government. I have Erowid to thank for helping me see past the rumors and DEA garbage, and allowing me to have safe, well-informed experiences as I choose. Erowid is not only filled with accurate information, but also vast amounts of personal accounts for multiple substances. There have been instances where had I not gotten the correct information on one thing or another, I could have suffered terrible unwanted, and often unknown to me, side effects.
The gist is that the people over at Erowid have come through for me on numerous occasions. I would highly recommend a look at the information they give before using any other source.
Although Erowid is a great source of information, I feel that the most important part of their website (member contribution) is heavily screened and results in a lack of unbiased content. I have submitted multiple reviews to erowid and they were all denied. Had I read my own review before dabbling with questionable substances I would have spared myself plenty of agony up front. In conclusion the review process should not deny submission but rather flag them as 'less' preferred. I am writing this review only to help Erowid, which I recently found.
My dear fellow vibratory creatures! It is with plethora of emotion I write you. First let me establish myself as far as you can know me in the illusion world. I am currently 40 yrs old. In physical existence within this cycle anyway. I guess you desire to know of my experiences, which I am sure will be pale in comparision with what I have read in the 2 days I have been on the Erowid site. Of course I smoked very abundantly cannabis but I wish to speak briefly of my expereinces with lsd more aptly my first time. I lived in FL at the time, I was approx. 16-17. Me and some friends went to some caves outside of highsprings, fl to do this there were about 4 of us. Keep in mind I am working with old memories. But the things I remember were these.
1. After I took the 2 hits we waited to decend into the caves until our peak was approaching. On the way down I noticed the entrance was actually thru the trunk of an old rusted car.
2. Everyone had huge bug eyes.
3. I felt like a worm.
4. There was a room we could not find out way into and there were growls and howling eminating from this room.
Now today I am "clean". Clean since 2.22.1999. I am clean since this time because on that day, thru a drug addiction I was shot 7 times with a .380 spend my time in the hospital for 8 weeks and rehab. I needed rehab because one of the bullets struck me in the head and sent bone and bullet fragments into my temporal lobe (L). Took another glancing shot to the back of the head, 2 under the left arm were i raised my arm in a defensive nature, another in the neck, another in the chest and a final one on my leg. So after this happened I dried out so to speak.
I found religion, I thought I found god but it was only religion. So the beat goes on I always knew there was a creative life force. So I studied religion wich led me to shamanismn, druidismn, and my search went stagnat for years. Then as recent as last year I FOUND!!! or at least the trail became clearer.
This happened after I found "The Emerald Tablets of THOTH the Atlantean'
Now I know what I am looking for or rather been missing. It is, in short DMT.
You think I'm bullshitting? In the Emerald Tablets THOTH speaks of higher enlightment and he gives the way. THOTH says, in the tablets "Start thy vibration in thy brain center, irregular first and regular second" I can stop there because :
A) Every reference I find on smoked DMT describes this.
2) DMT is naturally recurring in the body but to reach the ether, which is in the tablets, one must more DMT than the bodies produces. Funnny also how the powers that be have outlawed DMT and the reason why is because they cannot have a population of enlightened beings to wich they cannot control so the outlaw it and keep us in the dark about so they can impose their reallity upon us. So in short I desperatley NEED TO find THE POWER AND THE GLORY!!!!!!

Erowid saves lives by providing information not otherwise readily available... It helped me rescue one son with Ibogaine and prevent another son from some reckless experimentation that his schoolmates almost talked him into doing.
Erowid provides un-biased and accurate information with regards to drugs in order to educate and inform the public of the dangers, risks, and possible benefits associated with those drugs. Without Erowid I, personally, would be much less educated about the world we live in and the drugs that exist in it.
I can truly say as a once reckless teenager erowid saved me from dying from my inevitable drug use. I feel inevitable drug use is not exclusive to myself. This organization truly provides safe information whether it be for drug user or a concerned relative/family member. I will also say I recently lost a friend to opiate abuse and the most helpful part of my grieving process was informing myself of what my friend had been through, since he could no longer tell me himself. As well as inevitable drug use that experiences, all positive, with this truly amazing organization are not mutually exclusive to me. As a college student i do dearly feel badly for not being able to donate to them. If ever i am able iwill donate.
Erowid happens to be my number resource and reference that i use today. This site is a fantastic one, and one that I would call unique. A vast amount of reliable information, art, culture, drugs, make Erowid what it is. I'm sure the website has saved many lives and I hope it gains more recognition for what it truly is, thank you.
We need more resources like Erowid--it isn't perfect, but it offers plenty of propaganda free information on controversial substances. Instead of saying all these things are bad (like we were taught in school, DARE, etc) the focus is on harm reduction and education.
Erowid is the first place I check for harm reduction information when using drugs of any kind. The number of lives erowid has saved with its information is unimaginable. Thanks to erowid, the greatest nonprofit organization of all!
Erowid is my first stop when I am seeking reliable and valid information about an array of substances, both natural and man-made, The information derived from hard science, pointed questions posed, and commonly held conclusions coupled with anecdotal evidence -- both supportive of and contradictory to popularly-held beliefs -- paints a very complete picture of specific items drawn from a vast collection of studied substances. I would consider Erowid a pivotal and weighty element of the harm prevention and harm reduction efforts of the humane public effort to educate all persons about the potential wonders and possible dangers inherent to experimentation with such substances. I would declare Erowid a certain public imperative.
The Erowid website has been an invaluable resource to myself and my collegues on this Addiction Medicine Unit of a large HMO. As an RN , along with the doctors and counselors working here, I can say that Erowid has helped us to not only identify substances from the street- but can literally help us save lives and understand more fully the social context in which the substance is used. If not for the brutally honest Erowid Experience Vaults, I would have ended up in the hospital from allergic reaction, but because I found others had the same problem I was able to stop the problem myself. Any time I get a prescription, or before I decide to try a new herb for cooking or tea I always go to Erowid first. More than just the cookie cutter descriptions given by the drug companies, I love being able to see other people's experiences. I share the site with everyone!
As a college student, I see people around me using medications and prescriptions that they've never heard of before just for the feeling it gives them in situations of high stress.

This website is very, very interesting. It is so helpful to get to know all the drugs and chemicals out there. It takes one thing and breaks it down into a million little bits of information so you can know everything about it. One of the helpful is how there are categories of the drug. Like for example, the effects of LSD or the science behind adrenachrome. Very good, valid source of information if you need it.

This nonprofit has saved my life, and my friends lives. Great site. I have used it countless times in my times of youth to determine otherwise unknown dosage of substances that I likely would have over-dosed on without the knowledge presented in this site. It's always good to know how to do something the safe way, rather than by trial and error.

While I am certain that this review is far from unique, it is worth telling to give weight to what is likely to be a typical story. I was fortunate enough to stumble across Erowid, in 1999, at a time when more drugs were quickly finding their way into my life. My interests and social group made this inevitable notwithstanding my own curiosity, or indeed the world wide web. The balanced information and first-hand trip reports helped me to make educated choices about what substances to put into my body, to understand the associated dangers and what to expect in terms of effects (immediate, after and long-term) and duration. This information is hugely important; it can save lives, and that is no exaggeration. I would have taken drugs with or without Erowid, as would millions of others, but this information can aid one in charting a path through what is of course a potentially dangerous realm, but one that can be rewarding, enlightening and fun. The role of drugs in a life lived well is a contentious subject, but I and many others are living proof that with the right information, it is perfectly achievable, and Erowid has played a part in that. I am now in my thirties, run my own business and am educated to post-graduate level, but still find a place in my life for psychoactive substances. I continue to visit Erowid regularly, mainly to read trip reports which I have always found entertaining in their own right, and sincerely hope to see the site continue to go from strength to strength. I found about this website in 2009. Ever since I have used it frequently. It's nice to see good accurate information on substances. Erowid has probably saved my life in more than one instance by providing info on dosages and what can be potentially dangerous. If I had money I would donate as much as I can to this site. In my experience throughout the years, and many other people I know feel the same, Erowid has been an invaluable resource for anyone who wants to navigate the world of "street drugs, pharmaceuticals, designer drugs, herbs ect whether as a casual experimenter, veteran user, or someone just curious about the "drug"/chemical world. Erowid is full of non-bias factual information from both well sourced professional sources as well as first hand experiences from people who have actually tried these substances and want to share their knowledge/experience whether good, bad, or other. It is very important that all of this information be made available, especially in a user friendly non-judgmental format like Erowid provides. In my own personal experiences dabbling in the "drug world" I don't doubt that Erowid has likely saved my life and the lives of people around thanks to the information I was able to educate myself with from the website. Growing up I always tried to do as much research about any chemical/drug before ingesting so that I could make an educated decision whether I wanted to partake fulling knowing the risks involved, proper dosage, how to deal with "bad trips" or possible overdose situations. It actually became common knowledge within certain groups I hung out with that I was rather an "expert" on these topics and people would come to me with questions or concerns and I always tried to give them the most honest information I could to help them make their own educated decision and I owe all of this to erowid which I always recommend to anyone in the scene who has yet to hear of it! That said, by no means did erowid encourage my drug use, in fact, in several situations the information I found on the site prevented me from ingesting certain chemicals that were offered to me because through my research I didn't think the benefits outweighed possible negative effects. People are always going to be attracted to drugs,plants, chemicals that in someway alter their mood/consciousness for many different reasons and way too much of the information out there is so bias and nonfactual that it is useless and that more often than not just turns people off so much that they stay uneducated and therefor are often unsafe when it comes to their "drug" use and that is when it truly becomes dangerous and people get hurt because they have no idea what they are putting in their body or how much they really need to take in order to have a safe yet still fun time. I am very grateful for Erowid and hope they continue doing the important work that they do for many many years to come!!
Erowid is a fantastic non profit that has, in my experience, saved countless lives by educating people of the risks of drug use. Rather then tell drug users, "you will die if you use drugs!" As they already so often hear, Erowid provides them with unbiased information regarding the physiological effects of each drug and how one can best reduce the risks of said drug.
Erowid's easy to navigate, accurate, and extensive information has saved lives. The unfortunate truth is that many people will take drugs carelessly which can prove dangerous and even fatal. Giving the public easy access to this database is giving them chance to have a basic understanding of the true effects and interactions of what they are about to consume.
I wish Erowid had been around when I first started investigating recreational drug use 25 years ago. The knowledge and advice it provides would've given me a better and therefore safer understanding of the potential dangers involved. Specifically and in more recent years, thanks to Erowid my kettamine addiction has NOT taken the physical toll on my body that it would've without the knowledge this site provides. I am finishing up my degree in biology with a focus on neuroscience. As a college student I have experienced countless peers experimenting with drugs, especially psychedelics. From the tried and true LSD and mushrooms, to the experimental 2C-x family, the dosage and effect of the chemicals tried by young people today range wildly. It would be ridiculous to expect this information (what to expect from a given dose of a given drug) to be faithfully maintained by word of mouth between friends and dealers. Yet, people are going to try these drugs regardless.
Erowid fills the void here with their collection of dosage charts, health formation, and user experiences – not only with psychedelics, but with every drug imaginable. As someone who understands the biology behind and has first hand experience in the world of drug experimentation, I feel truly grateful for resources like Erowid. I literally cannot count how many times I've heard incorrect information about drugs from people who deal drugs or peers that use them. In fact, I would wager that it is far more likely to hear wrong information than right information. I know many, many young people who would have suffered severe physical or psychological harm if not for the wonderful resource that is Erowid.
The immense curiosity about one's own mind is a beautiful gift for a person to have. It shows real intelligence and creativity for one to recognize the mystery of the soul, of awareness itself, and attempt to understand it in the same way people have been doing for thousands of years – entheogens and other drugs. They are an incredibly underrated organization because of the ignorance of and stigma associated with drug use.

The majority of addictive behaviors occur when the user of psychoactive drugs is uninformed about the drug and its side effects, including physical withdrawal symptoms. I have had family members who have suffered addiction simply because they tried a new drug under peer pressure or ignorance.
Through the information provided by Erowid, I have been able to successfully choose the natural drugs I choose further my personal and mental development, while pursuing a challenging academic degree, having no withdrawal symptoms or dependence on any drug whatsoever.
Drugs have both positive and negative effects to offer us, and source like Erowid Centre is a great boon to this world as it educates in an unbiased way about the myriad of drugs available in the world today, so that they can make informed choices and be warned by personal experiences about certain dependence-inducing drugs.

I have always found their information to be both informative and useful, and also easy to understand for a lay person. Erowid Center is a great resource! The war on drugs can not be won. It should not be won. Because of this war on drug, as a culture, we are losing what some of these drug can and have taught us. All of the plants here on earth have a use. Some if used right can teach us spiritual lessons. Ways to better live our own life and ways to treat others better in the same hand. But if used in the wrong way these same plants can be useless as just taking a drug and wasting time. Erowid is the best source i trust to learn about these spiritual plants and drugs. There is not a lot of non bias information from the source the people that have had those experience. But Erowid has the most of this information. Erowid is not only about drugs or entheogens but mediation, spirituality, culture, arts, freedom and more. Erowid is a great nonprofit! It is proof that this country is still somewhat free! If we as a culture lose this we really have lost more than a nonprofit but a invaluable resource to the people. It has helped people safely do things they would have done anyway but not safely. The governments plan doesn't work (clearly) it is time to try a new way to go about it. Erowid is where the people should start. Inform the people and let them decide. Information is our power.

Professionals and volunteers should join their knowledge and collaborate. This would be not only great harm reduction but also benefit enhancement (people would not take drugs if there were no benefits).

Erowid. Is SUPER!!!! I go to erowid to read about experiences that other people have had. I go there to LEARN! I read about experiences others have had, and I can almost but imagine what those experiences would be like! It leaves me in a state of wonder and imagination. Erowid is a SUPER resource! It is HIGHLY HIGHLY valuable to HUMANKIND! I have barely taken any drugs or medicines listed on erowid. I have read stories that are just downright dangerous for the people who tell them. I have read stories that have changed MY LIFE! These experiences people are having and explaining on Erowid, are not only life changing for the actual "drug taker" or "Medicine taker" (to be more accurate "Medicine", is the RIGHT word to use). Erowid can be opened and read like a story book of fairy tales. Or a book of deep and profound WISDOM. Erowid is PLATINUM! It is to BE PRESERVED FOR AS LONG as eternity! I may not even have to go and have ANY experience on any medicine. SIMPLY because EROWID can provide to me the insights that I need in my life, acquired via reading other peoples experiences. Erowid has helped me, even avoid some hazards during times of full on addiction. It's still a strong go to information site for me, from a wide perspective, regarding drugs (and alcohol) from the broadest philosophical, hedonic, therapeutic, and practical perspectives.
As a matter of fact, given the anonymity afforded here, I will be candid to disclose that, while I'm perfectly transparent in the above comments, [and will probably access the site as I hopefully enter into graduate studies] that; I'm here to take a glance at the antihistamine Meclizine this morning, with which I'm bumping my purely-hypothetical- illegal-use of percocet and vicodin (as well as tylenol and alleve).
We are not a simplistic people, nor is the subject wholly captured from a marginalized approach from either polarized perspective.
And, please know, that the candid academic and anecdotal reporting--*including a hedonic posture regarding drug use/dependence/addictions, are VERY VALUABLE--whether from a harms reduction-safety posture regarding use; study from a purely academic perspective; and/or informing the counseling perspective.
Please do not negate the purely *hedonic part of the education available here, for the above reasons. Although paradoxical, we users and/or therapists, know the real value of this intellectually honest approach to the subject of psycho-active substances.
For example, I recently was perusing the Silk Road, and for the sake of intellectual honesty, please don't think for one moment that my motives were purely academic nor therapeutic; although both hedonistic and therapeutic motives were involved.
Why I offer this is that, while I, by the grace of my Higher Power, escaped injury; (the FBI seized Silk Road as I was contemplating setting up a purchase of bitcoins; and, I was fortuitously contravened in the matter) my inquiring mind also found peer reviewed science articles on the college servers where I'm studying, which were written by Silk Road's secondary progenitor, Ross Ulbricht.
Only we with these kinds of insights can really understand the pragmatic value of what I'm trying to say. FWIW, I can pray for Ulbricht--no moral qualifiers up or down--I'm just being as transparent as I know how to be.
The up-shoot was that I was able to offer a didactic communication with a university pharmacology class inhabited by a significant population of budding drug/alcohol counselors. I can't express strongly enough how valuable (even in light of frank drug use) how VALUABLE the hedonic perspective is.
I commend ya'll from my heart. Keep up the good work. I would also commend you for protecting the anonymity of your readers, and thereby encouraging the anecdotal input of your readers--valuable stuff, regardless of intellectual posture.
Articles regarding, for example, the history of substances, like the use of trans-dermal marijuana and alkaloids by the Greek doctor Galen for the ancient Olympians [Olympians Dark Ointment] --stuff like that, would be a welcome source of information.

Not only that, but by giving true, factual information about substances that may or may not be harmful, Erowid can help individuals make decisions based on fact, not propaganda. There's a lot of junk out there that over dramatizes the sometimes dangerous effects of narcotics, often ebbing away people (especially teens!) trust in these sources. By providing accurate information, Erowid helps people make intelligent decisions and reduces the amount of harm that people can potentially do to themselves. 5 out of 5, this is an organization that helped people all over the world and saved lives through real education.

Erowid has given me more information, quicker, easier, and credibly than I could have ever found anywhere else. Not only did I feed my curiosities but I learned serious lessons about what is and what is not to be meddled with. A lot of kids will go unknowingly into these drug-territories with little to no knowledge of the problems and health risks they could face. Erowid has been helpful to me in multiple occasions in my quest to study botany and increase my knowledge in medicinal and psychoactive plants. I have always loved Erowid. I found it serendipitously while doing some research on MDMA and LSD for a biology class I was taking. Of any place on the vast abyss that is the internet, Erowid is in my opinion the best source of unbiased information on the safety, technicalities, and use of psychoactive plants and drugs. The site does not suggest that one try drugs, but rather is a great source for someone who has on their own already made the decision to try drugs.
I am naturally inclined to want to explore my mind through the use of drugs that alter conscious states. I would have no doubt attempted to do so whether there were resources available to educate myself on these substances or not. What I can say is that Erowid, which far exceeds any other resource in its comprehensive education of the listed substances , has helped to make every single one of my experiences on these substances a positive one. This has been primarily done through the writing of others about their first times and their difficult experiences and what to expect and how to deal with them. In addition it also lets me know which drugs are worth my time, by giving me immediate access to the scientific literature on said drugs.

Erowid is one of the most helpful, useful and informational drug sites, if not the most. It combines chemical and physiological empirical evidence and a pharmacological perspective on the many psychoactive drugs listed but also incorporates the experiences and testimonies from it's users to allow others to learn from a personal perspective. These elements aggregate what can best be described as the most precise and thorough psychoactive library. Erowid enables users of psychoactives to learn about what they are ingesting and know the risks involved, a noble cause for the millions of psychoactive drug users across the world.
I have been a user of Erowid for the past ten plus years. When I was a teenager, the things that I was able to access kept me from doing many dumb things.

I know this site since 10 years a go and it has helped me go through a lot of new stuff that I didn't have any idea of. It is a massive compilation of very useful information, very good advisor on what to do and what not to do with each substance, very objective also. For me it is a guide that introduce you theoretically to new worlds and by doing that is like going with a map to a new city. I just read a story about a man on tramadol for pain of lower back, written in 2007. His symptoms of memory loss and electric feelings in the body are exactly what i have. I will forever be grateful that he used this website to tell of his situation. No longer do i feel alone in the battle to relieve pain. Erowid has provided the public with a non-bias, source of information on substances and chemicals of an astounding variety. There is accurate information regarding the legal status/repercussions, health dangers, chemical structure, duration, intended purpose ect. on everything from LSD to aspirin. Many regard distribution of such knowledge as taboo (since many of the substances are scheduled and/or controlled). However, in compiling this information in one place it has demystified the notoriety of these substances and has helped to create a truly drug aware audience.
I have done many stupid things in my life when it comes to drugs, but this site has made it much safer for myself and im sure millions of others. People will do drugs there is no stopping it we need to keep people safe and informed when using them. Harm Reductions the word.

There is a vast movement to change the way our society views mind altering substances. Fundamentally, there is little difference between say, coffee and khat, yet one is highly illegal in America and the other is given with regularity to four year olds on TV. This type of logic floods the world's modern opinion of drugs and with such an uneducated majority of the population, good advice and information regarding the reality of these substances. Erowid is a centralized database which allows access to said realities. LSD is a fairly demure compound in the realm of dangerous interactions, so one might assume they would be fine taking lithium and LSD, physically speaking. In truth it is a very dangerous combination; one that could have killed my current girlfriend had we not thought to check erowid. To put it bluntly, one can't put a number or value on the lives saved by erowid on a day to day basis.
Eroweed should be required reading for all teenagers, and for that matter, for anyone with the curiosity to try any mind altering substance, to educate themselves in the risks and the required safety measures to minimize risks.

No matter what the government tries to do, there will always be drugs and drug users. Erowid has been a very great source for information when it comes to general knowledge of plants/Drugs/Spirit/Mind, not only for myself but for others who have called me and have asked about a specific drug, or plant etc and because of erowid i've learned a very very great amount about such things which makes Erowid a god send to people because of its harm reduction it provides. Basically, situations that could have possibly harmed or even killed friends,family and other people were NOT because of this web page being available. I have watched it grow and grow over the last 10-11 Years and without Harm Reduction places for people to go, people may and usually make very bad decisions and In certain situations after reading what was provided, it actually DETERRED people and my self away from certain things they and i would have went through with if Erowid wasn't there. It clearly has helped myself for one and multiple friends in the thought process of choosing to recreationally attempt a substance, to understand Chemistry and the Mind And Body thanks to Erowid. It's not a "druggie site", it's a place for harm reduction and again thank them for have taken the time and effort and money to keep this site available. Erowid can be summarized in two words: harm reduction. My experiences with erowid have demonstrated to me the importance of education in curbing dangerous/irresponsible use of drugs. Whenever I am in a situation where I am considering using any substance (alcohol included), Erowid's Fundamentals for Responsible Use flash through my mind. These alone have saved me many a bad experience, to say nothing of their experience reports, legal information, details concerning health effects, and the like. Check 'em out!

Erowid is my primary information database regarding anything it contains articles on. Most people would think that would mean illegal drugs, but actually I've been using it lately for legal drugs (amanita muscaria, coffee, etc.) and the 'mind & spirit' section (for example, fasting).
This website is clearly among the very small Internet elite: it's been around for more than a decade, it's operated by experts who let in only extremely valuable free material and is beyond reproach in being a transparent and responsible compendium even while addressing matters that might be seen as dark, dangerous or criminal (even though they aren't). When reading Wikipedia I sometimes follow references to cross-examine facts; on Erowid, each word I read is final as far as I'm concerned.
Even if it were to shutdown tomorrow, it'd still occupy a spotlight on Internet history and in the users' hearts.

I have taken an interest in this site since it was a simple provider of essential information. In my role as Community Psychiatrist, I have often directed patients to this site so that their choices around drug use could be comprehensively informed. Site visits have had a range of effects. These range from helping people decide against using unprescribed drugs to staying safe when using recreational drugs to complying with prescribed drugs (often for the first time). it is a brilliant resource.
SInce I have known of the organization, I have watched Erowid act as a positive influence in lives of many experimental teenagers . For young people who are set on experimentation, having this information available to them allows them to make far better decisions than they would otherwise.

Many years ago I suffered from quite serious health issues and found the several doctors involved were just confusing me. One would say take this. The next would say don't take that , take this. Then the specialist would say " Why are you taking this?" I decided to learn more about just what I was to believe. Then about fifteen years ago I discovered EROWID.

Erowid fills a much needed gap in the current medical literature. Eventually, many of the drugs described in Erowid's database will be part of mainstream medicine (ibogaine for heroin dependency, LSD for PTSD, etc.) leading to the inevitable improvement of many people's lives and experience. For the time being, Erowid is essentially the counter-culture medicine's bible, and does a wonderful job of integrating individual experiences with empirical data and peer-reviewed articles.

I have discovered Erowid about 5 years ago, and since then it has been my primary source of unbiased information about drugs. The value of this project is incredible, it is sad it's an NGO job, it should be goverment funded.
Also I am very impressed by other projects run by Erowid, such as ecstasydata.org. This, again, is one of the most important online harm reduction programs in the world. It saves lifes and makes a real difference.

Non-biased, exclusive information on a vast array of physiologically active plants and chemical substances presented in a user friendly format. Erowid is my go to source in researching plants and substances that are new to me. While Erowid provides an abundance of useful information on drugs including legality and experience reports, substances such as Echinacea and Garlic can be researched to find uses and benefits that perhaps you never knew about. Erowid provides people with the information they deserve, I hope we can keep it around forever.
Erowid is awesome, not only do they provide dosage information for harm reduction, they also allow people to tell stories about their own drug use, and perhaps persuade people to not do the drugs. This site is great in every single aspect, they deserve this award for the work they have done in educating people about drug use.
This is a great resource for unbiased, real-accounts of psychoactive substance use. The miserably-failing DARE and other abstinence programs are a complete failure. People who desire to use these substances should have access to reliable information...for instance, if there is a student in school who is on an anti-depressant that is classified as an MAOI and wants to experiment with MDMA, this combination could be fatal. The DARE officers won't provide harm-reduction information to these students, who are going to use them regardless. This website has saved my own life and the lives of many others and should be used as a reference in schools. Tens of thousands of FIRST HAND accounts of drug use....why is this NOT being taught to our students? Enough of the lies, propaganda, and misinformation spread by the government. I'm a student of anthropology. I've studied several cultures and the substances they use. After having been recommended this website by MY PROFESSOR, I researched the website thoroughly. AFter extensive research (in and out of the "field") I can honestly say this is the most unbiased and ACCURATE source of information of this type on the internet (at least that can be accessed by normal people). This isn't a place for druggies, it's a place for knowledge.

Erowid has been, by far, the most useful site I have ever used in the research of pharmacology. I live abroad, and often drugs are prescribed without any directions. Because they are prescribed by a doctor, you want to trust them. Being a cautious patient, however, you also want to know what you are about to take. More than any other site, Erowid's candid explanations of how drugs work, what the side-effects can be, and what possible longterm effects are possible, I have been able to continue working abroad without major incident.
At one time, my wife was prescribed diazepam to help her with a stomach infection. This didn't seem right, and we looked up the effects of diazepam. Without this resource, we may have taken the doctor's advice, and my wife could have become even sicker.

The website emphasizes the "complex relationship between humans and psychoactives" and is thus a place unlike any other. It offers context for these relationships, including explaining medicinal and spiritual practice of said substances. This is certainly a great nonprofit.

It is without a doubt the single best encyclopedic source for accurate data on essentially every psychoactive there is. It cites up to date legal changes, references respectable scientific research, and keeps relevant historical and societal influence in mind as well. Its a community of people ranging from users who share their experience to researchers who confirm the data shown. It is astonishing in how unbiased it is.
Considering that somebody somewhere is and always will be using any drug in its database regardless of consequence, Erowid will still clearly and honestly state the real risks and dangers of using said substance however severe or non-existent these may be. And if the information isn't available yet for whatever reason, it clearly warms you as such. If used more extensively by the general populace it would without doubt decrease the harmful effects drugs as a whole have on society. It has changed my whole perspective on psychoactives, keeping certain drugs deservingly vilified but also opening my eyes to the fact that some drugs that we have been told from a very young age are very dangerous are in fact safer than ibuprofen.

I found erowid by curiosity on google, and I found a treasure of information.
I didn't even imagined there were so many psychoactive substances, and erowid teached me about bad consequences, effects, availability, experiences, and even positive consequences of most of the psychoactive substances contained in the site. Teachers, tv and government tell us drugs are bad and they will ruin your life, but which drugs? how?

I began to realise the magnitude of drug information on Erowid, when each Google search for drug information always yielded numerous results stemming from Erowid, more it seemed than any other site. I was probably 18 at the time, and it was then that I started studying in greater detail. I'm 26 now, and I've found that Erowid is often a one-stop shop for information, but I include links to papers elsewhere within that claim.
If you want to take what you take seriously and gain further insight, then you can probably find the information you need on Erowid, barring perhaps, very rarely seen/ used drugs and new research chemicals. That isn't really Erowid's fault though, because the information on those chemicals don't exist!
