I’ve been involved with Movement Exchange for a few years now and it is truly an incredible organization. Being able to travel to Panama to teach dance has been such a gift, and has only emphasized the importance and need for dance diplomacy, sustainable dance education, and cross-cultural understanding. If you have the opportunity to get involved in this life-changing organization, I highly recommend doing so! It has impacted my life in more ways than one.

Movement Exchange changed my life and opened my eyes to the world of dance around me. I am so grateful for every piece of the experience - from the integration of the history of Panama City to hanging out with the kids to teaching dance to spending time in the warm sunshine. But, most of all, I will take with me the smiles and the laughter. This trip left me fuller than before, and the dancers gave me so much more than I could have ever imagined. I will never forget how this trip made me feel.

My experience with Movement Exchange was such moving and powerful experience. This non-profit has it going on- and I'm so blessed to have been part of their work for a week.
Movement Exchange reminded me that service is hard work, yet work is rewarding. Movement Exchange reminded me that diversity is beautiful. Movement Exchange reminded me that what people crave in life is meaningful connection and love.
When we taught- it wasn’t about the dancing. It was about the children’s hands we held, the hugs we gave, and the hope we left with them that their bodies are beautiful. It was about the women I built relationships with who all came on this trip to find meaning in connecting. Their ability to love and teach has inspired me just as much as the kids have.

This experience with Movement Exchange was so life changing. I am so filled with love thanks to this experience of a lifetime. Teaching these kids everyday, seeing the joy of their faces, and seeing how they live in the beautiful culture of panama was absolutely amazing. We taught at both the Malambo Orphanage and the Aldea SOS Orphange, along with kids from barrio activo. This opportunity to teach in Panama showed me that dance is such a universal language and can spread such love and hope.
The relationships that I built on this trip will always stick with me, especially with the kids. It was so sweet to see the kids lovingly run up to us when we showed up. They would meet us with hugs and would be ready to have fun and dance with us. I will always remember these amazing kids and how much they loved to dance and the joy that they had despite their hardships. I absolutely loved seeing all of the kids faces light up when they danced.
Also I wanted to thank the dance diplomats that I met. It was so amazing to see so many people come together for the same purpose with such different backgrounds as both dancers and as people. We were so diverse but had the same love and passion for dance, community and teaching. I love you all

Movement Exchange has changed my life for the better. By working with students both in my community and abroad in Panama, I have learned to be a confident leader and a happy dancer. Movement Exchange has allowed me to work with people who live very different lives than me, and it has been the most humbling and inspiring experience. The students that I have worked with have ignited in me a flame that can never be put out. I have left every class and ended every day of my Exchange feeling capable of my abilities as a dancer, along with the belief that dance can be for anyone and everyone. I am so excited to see how I can grow as a member of Movement Exchange, and to experience a difference being made in the lives of both the children and myself.

Movement Exchange is a very special organization to me. I had the great opportunity to interact with kids in Panama and see the endless impact that dance can have on people. The kids taught me about giving and receiving love. I was reminded that we dance for joy and that we can connect with one another through movement, regardless of what language we speak. I am so thankful that this organization is showing the power of dance. I am changed for the better.

Movement Exchange changed my life. It improved my perspective on dance as an art form and as education by encouraging equality and openness. The exchange is truly AN EXCHANGE and is unlike any other service work because of how deeply the volunteers will be impacted as well as the dance students. I'm proud to call myself a dance diplomat after my week long experience in Panama.

I started volunteering with Movement Exchange Panama in 2010 and continued until 2014. I immediately fell in love with Panama, the meaningful work we were doing, as well as the dedication and passion that the organizers and volunteers exhibited. It's hard to put into words the benefits one may gain from experiences such as these, but simply put, my experiences with Move-Ex and Panama were life changing. I still visit Panama often and I always try to visit the children, foundations, and even grandparents that I kept in contact with after my Move-Ex volunteer experiences. I feel Move-Ex creates a long-term community of like-minded people that want to contribute in making the world a better place... It's as simple as that. I'm grateful I found Move-Ex, I'm grateful to Anna, who created the program, and to all the people who continue to keep the program running. My life if fuller from my Panama Move-Ex experiences... Thank you & I'll see you again, Move-Ex and Panama!

I had the awesome opportunity to travel abroad to Panama City, Panama with Movement Exchange!!

During the exchange, I took dance classes from local artists (including traditional Panamanian folk dance and break dancing!), studied Panamanian history, taught movement classes at local orphanages, and had the opportunity to teach, collaborate, and learn from the dance students at the University of Panama.

Dance is a universal language! And sharing movement with people who don’t speak the same verbal language, is proof of that. I learned so much about myself while sharing and teaching this art form that I love so much.

My recap video (link below) is but a small snapshot of all the wonderful things I experienced while in this beautiful country. Panama's people, history, language, and culture is so rich...and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to travel as a dance diplomat with Movement Exchange.

I joined Movement Exchange as a junior at Indiana University and it was one of my most rewarding experiences. I led an hour long dance, jump, crawl, wiggle, giggle, scream and shout fun fest every week at Girls Inc. of Monroe county. Movement exchange gave me the opportunity to grow as a person and to meet some pretty cool kiddos.

I first heard of Movement Exchange when the Program Director sent me an email inviting me to apply for a Spring 2018 Exchange. Since then, I've spent a week in Panama learning about the culture and populations of people that live there. I was able to share my love of dance with the children at Aldea SOS and Malambo. I have now started my very own university chapter of Movement Exchange at Saint Louis University, which is growing and developing at an exponential rate. Movement Exchange has definitely changed my life for the better, and I know that we, as an organization, will continue to change the lives of youth, adults, and elderly through movement and dance.

Movement Exchange gets it right. Their model of sustainability is exemplary. I am a surgeon, who still passionately tap dances, and I went on one of the trips to Panama. The collaboration with local dance instructors creates a year long presence for these kids, establishes true role models for them, and introduces them to new friends from abroad. In so doing, this program stakes commitment in the soil of those it serves and embodies the beauty of cultural exchange. Plenty of medical mission trips don't get this right. Too often there is fly-by volunteerism and then gaping absence - Not with Movement Exchange. Their contribution is constant, steady, compassionate, and effective.

Movement Exchange is the best non-profit I have ever been a part of. This organization means so much to me that this is my third year of involvement and I am not the UCI Chapter's president. I will be returning to Panama in August of the 2017 year to participate in my third International Dance Exchange. This program has given me the opportunity to conduct research on dance's ability to enhance cognitive growth, communication between strangers, and serve as a conduit of social change. I have had the privilege to meet dancers my age from Panama with the same career goals and college major as mine as well as teacher who provide weekly dance classes at the local schools and orphanages. This is an incredible opportunity to bring strangers together under a united passion for movement.

Movement Exchange truly embodies the human experience. Connecting with people of all ages through dance has been one of the most powerful experiences of my life. Through this amazing organization I have fallen in love with each aspect of life over and over again. Traveling to Panamá has been a life changing experience for me, I was able to connect and form relationships with some of the strongest, smartest, sweetest, and sassiest kids while hardly being able to speak the same language. During my first exchange we were at Aldea SOS in Colón, we ate lunch with the kids and then went outside to dance. My group had finished lunch first, we hadn't gotten started yet but I noticed a boy (14) dancing, I walked up to him and started dancing with him. We had hardly spoken but in that moment we formed a strong bond. I have been on 4 exchanges and each year I have grown closer and closer with him and his sister. The kids in Panamá have inspired me in a multitude of ways. I think about many of the kids I have bonded with every single day. I wonder how they are doing and every year I have gone back I have been able to see how much they've grown and the passion for dance they have procured. Dance has become a special part of each person Movement Exchange has touched. Dance heals the soul and Movement Exchange feeds it.

Movement Exchange has no-doubt been the most gratifying program I have ever been a part of. The people I met were so caring, helpful, and down-to-earth. The staff were so kind and eager to help with any questions or problems I had about the trip before I got to Panama, and once I got to Panama I was welcomed with open arms. The work that we did was so impactful, so vital and important for not only the kids in the orphanages and schools that we worked in, but the community as a whole. During my experience with Movement Exchanges weeklong dance exchange program in Panama, I got to see so much growth, not only in myself, but the kids we were working with. Even with some-what of a language barrier, I was still able to teach the kids by communicating through dance. Seeing dance cross over such barriers and boundaries is an amazing thing to watch. The dance programs they have also help keep kids off the streets and give a safe environment for the kids to safly exspress themselves.

I've traveled internationally with Movement Exchange twice, and have held board positions at the UC Irvine chapter for two years as well! Movement Exchange is NOT voluntourism. Since dance is our means of social justice, we focus of emotional health and artistic education by exposing our dance diplomats to a new culture and giving them a platform to share their knowledge. During both trips, participants have been embraced by the communities and return as changed people. The directors of the trip keep the experience as authentic as possible and accommodate the local community--it's truly a one-of-a-kind experience. We are moving to change!

Movement Exchange is a beautiful collision of artistry, service, and dance. What it provides is experience and true human-to-human experience, which cannot be replaced or replicated. Spending time in Panamá pushes dance diplomats outside of their known worlds, and allows them to grow exponentially, simply be being. Self-growth, trust, and love are learned in a context that teaches social justice, humility, peace, and the importance of the arts in the individual's life. Movement Exchange cultivates awareness and consciousness for the Other, for those who have less, but ultimately decide to give more. With dance, human bodies can be cherished and connections are shared between people who would otherwise be strangers. Movement Exchange unites, creates, and continuously supports those who decide to #movetochange.

Being a part of Movement Exchange has been one of the greatest experiences I have ever had with a nonprofit. As a member and now president of a university chapter, I have already learned so much from its extensive network: new dance styles, teaching techniques, touching stories, and strategies on how to lead a nonprofit. It is a very transparent organization, with monthly public video updates and open communication from the national body to its chapter members through dedicated chapter mentors. There is an inclusive environment where every volunteer is valued, included, mentored and supported, and I can say that I now know a group of passionate dance diplomats from around the world that I can reach out to and look up to. Even the alumni stay involved!

As for the service that this organization provides, words cannot describe the impact that I have personally seen dance make on communities in Panama and San Diego. With a strong belief in sustainability, cross-cultural understanding, civic engagement, social equality and inclusion, and creative expression, I have seen how Movement Exchange has practiced what it preaches by clocking in thousands of hours of genuine service through accessible dance education. The collateral impacts are abstract but enormous - increased confidence for students and dance diplomats, knocked down cultural and language barriers, and a strong sense of youth and community empowerment. And to think that this organization is still so young! I can't wait to see the continued growth and impact to come. #MoveToChange

Movement Exchange is a wonderful organization that brings dance education to the children of Panama. I volunteered as a dance teacher for a week in Panama and had an amazing time not only as a teacher but also as a student. The program is a cultural exchange, so we spent a lot of time exploring the local community and meeting community leaders, learning folk dances and about the history of US/Panama relations, and brushing up on our Spanish. Movement Exchange is also about the sustainability of their programs; while my group was only there a week there are local educators that teach dance classes on a regular basis.

When I first heard about Movement Exchange during their first national outreach tour, I was so inspired by their cause that I decided to kick start the Movement Exchange chapter here at the University of Cincinnati. At that time, I could have never imagined the profound impact that this organization could have on me as a person and dancer. Since then, our chapter has grown to 22 active members, have gone on our first Panama Exchange, established 3 domestic outreach partners, and are going on our second annual exchange this December. Through these experiences, my love for dance and passion for sharing that love has grown immensely. The joy that I experienced teaching in Panama and the understanding and appreciation that I developed for other cultures is incomparable. I was truly able to experience cross-cultural exchange and empowerment through dance with Movement Exchange. I have since been able to carry this joy and understanding in my domestic outreach in Cincinnati, and also in my study of dance. They employ local dance instructors to keep teaching in Panama when volunteers are not there and they pay them for their teaching work. I have been a member of Movement Exchange at Indiana University for 4 years and I honestly believe this is one of the most unique nonprofit AND service organizations I have heard of. The IU chapter focuses on providing dance opportunities to children in Bloomington that may not have access to them otherwise. Personally I have participated in, hosted and led dance workshops, classes, and flashmobs all over our Bloomington community including The Boys and Girls Club, Girls, Inc., The Middle Way House, and travelled during winter break to lead dance workshops to children in orphanages in Panama. Movement Exchange truly aims to bring awareness to the benefits of creative expression and bring attention to the various kinds of 'needs' all people need, not just the physical survival needs. We bring awareness to social justice issues, cross-cultural understanding, civic engagement, and sustainable service. Chapters across the country travel to Panama throughout all parts of the year to continue the (free) dance education of our Panamanian communities, which is also supported by donations and funding for the national organization. In Movement Exchange, not only do the communities we serve benefit, but our members/volunteers benefit from our service experiences too, gaining cross-cultural understanding, leadership and responsibility skills, gaining relationships with local communities, and more!

Movement Exchange is an organization that is making a real and necessary impact on so many lives - children in Panamanian orphanages, students from the United States, and local Panamanian dancers. Over the course of our one week exchange, I learned more than I ever thought would be possible. I immersed myself in a new culture, learned about the orphan experience, and witnessed first-hand the power that dance education can have in both the lives of its students and its teachers. Movement Exchange does an exceptional job of educating its volunteers about the intent and nature of its work (noting the difference between volunteerism and "voluntourism"), the history and culture of Panama, and the importance of compassion in our everyday interactions. I learned of Movement Exchange in 2014 during a summer when I was facing the devastating prospect of having to stop my ballet career due to injuries. Move-Ex quite literally fell into my lap at the right time: providing me the ability to continue using my passion for dance for something so much larger than myself. From the beginning, I not only began getting to experience leadership roles within my university chapter (I currently serve as its president), but opportunities to volunteer within the organization's administration. I have loved watching other people at my university, other students and individuals fall in love with Movement Exchange as they witness dance change the lives of so many people around them in addition to themselves. What makes Movement Exchange so special is that it truly prioritizes the experiences between people of all different backgrounds. It has been incredible to participate in the year round sustainable dance programs in Panama as well as in the US and watch first hand the impact Move-Ex has had on so many people. Movement Exchange has shown me what it's like to be a part of something bigger than yourself, and has inspired me to use dance as a medium for change!

Movement Exchange is an organization filled with dedicated, motivated, and inspiring leaders, dancers, volunteers, and participants who are all committed to the Move-Ex mission. Movement has the ability to bring joy and happiness to any situation and although I have been dancing for 17+ years, I don't think I ever really knew how powerful dance could be. The exchange to Panama allows participants from across the world to connect and grow together, forming long lasting relationships that support growth and confidence. Movement Exchange uses dance as a medium through which participants and volunteers can inspire, change and grow. With an emphasis on providing sustainable dance education in the communities it serves, Movement Exchange will continue to inspire and change lives through dance. Move to change, baby!

I joined Movement Exchange in 2011 at a university chapter and began taking on leadership roles within my university's chapter in 2012. I joined because I was intrigued by the idea of incorporating dance and service and was excited to not only teach dance in orphanages and after school programs, but also to learn folkloric dance and other styles from professional Panamanian artists.
Movement Exchange is more than a group that brings dance education to the communities it touches; it is a family of kind-hearted and generous people who endeavor to improve the lives of others, even if that just means briefly brightening another’s day through a simple act of kindness. And throughout my five years as a member of Movement Exchange, I have learned that the joy shared between our dancers—volunteers and participants alike—is a happiness that can transcend boundaries of age, language, and cultural differences. I’ve realized that dance is a powerful tool, and Movement Exchange is using it to bring awareness to issues such as social inequality as well as empowering the individuals with whom we interact.
If you support creative arts programming, social equality, or humanitarian efforts, please consider joining or supporting Movement Exchange. Becoming a dance diplomat changed my life and was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

The ultimate cultural exchange experience. With it's platform for dance service on the domestic and international scale, Movement Exchange is changing so many lives. When I was the chapter president at Indiana University, I found no experience to be more fulfilling. Directing the energy and passion of dancers towards giving back is something that has not been done enough, but with 5 years under their belt, Movement Exchange continues to be a pioneer in the field, paving the way for dancers to shift their mindset from performance to community service. With its 21 university chapters sustaining year-round dance programs on the ground, its 3 Panamanian dance instructors sustaining year-round dance programs in Panama, and its international exchanges, Movement Exchange has truly defined and lived out the ideals of dance diplomacy. Move to Change!
