Doing it right is priority One at The Medicine Horse Project project. This is really our 10th anniversary and progressing into our fifth year at the Nevada location which is a intricate yet simple designed facility that should be on your bucket list to see. Doing it right with expert knowledge in animal nutrition is one of the ways we save money from our valued donors. We are proud to say that here in our Nevada facility we have never relied on an emergency veterinary call only scheduled and routine health checks and tooth and hoof maintenance. Sometimes little lives are born here. This is actually our first from our last rescue. That's little Victor. Born and growing healthy. Doing it right includes not cutting any corners on health and proactive maintenance preventing interruptions in our progress. We work hard at The Medicine Horse Project doing it right to be seen as the rescue example. Thanks to amazing donors we now have a small cement pad workspace to continue maintenance on equipment water trailers and trucks. This is a huge step and without our donors we would not be able function at our current capacity. I was lucky enough to have a little helper when I was forming the concrete and he learned how to read a level and follow the little bubble. And we have a perfectly level concrete pad. Thank you to all reading this. Enjoy the picture of little Victor

Just watching one horse at a Time come in from a hardship of one of the other being rehabilitated watching people interact with them watching the change and their demeanor and their faces then that horse going to a place where it's wanted and taken care of. One horse at a time one person at a time it's a great thing
I first met Chris Nichols 8 years ago while attending a women’s empowerment retreat at a mustang sanctuary in Southern California. That experience cemented my understanding that horses are, indeed, powerful medicine and that they deserve to live their lives as well as possible. The heart and effort that Chris and Morgan have put into building and sustaining the Medicine Horse Project is more than impressive. Recently, I was fortunate enough to be able participate in the Rhythm of Nature workshop at the sanctuary. Once again, I was moved to observe Chris in her element. Her knowledge and dedication are sincere; she is a formidable motivator for both horses and people. I came away from that time with an enhanced sense of myself and my own power. She provided a safe place and held space for each of us as we spent time with the animals and leaned into the lessons. It remains my pleasure to support MHP in whatever ways I can.
I have known Chris a long time and she has always had a passion for saving animals that need her. To see what she accomplishes with horses, and often horses that have so much trauma, makes this rescue one of the best around.
My family and I visited Medicine Horse when they lived in CA. Chris and Morgan were so welcoming and appreciative of us! The horses had a safe comfortable area for care and exercise. We wanted to volunteer with them but found out they were in the process of moving to NV. So we became a supporter instead by donating when we could to help with expenses. I follow MH closely, stay in touch with owner and am blown away by the storied of the rescues they take in and the events they have for helping people as well. AAA+ rating!
I reached out to Chris at Medicine Horse Project after making the hard decision of trying to find a home, for a wild mustang I rescued from a neglectful and abusive situation. He needed a place he could just be himself. No obligations, somewhere gentle and patient. I found that at MHP. Chris and her husband Morgan are kind loving people. The run a beautiful facility. The horses are loved and have everything, surrounded by the beautiful Nevada Mountains. Thank you Chris and Morgan for doing such an amazing job. God Bless you both
Chris is a true angel on earth! She has done amazing work for every sweet soul she has rescued and shares her equine knowledge and passion with everyone she meets.
The work MHP does is truly magical, and the world is a better place because of the MHP and their mission.
I and my partner drove 1888 miles to the desert and found our nourishment at MHP. What a blessing ! Morgan and Chris bless their souls, mend the spirits of all animals. I am so captured by their wisdom. I lost myself in their love and found my soul. I am forever greatful.

Breaveheart sent me a message to come to MHP in NV as he had something to give me. As I traveled from MN to NV Breaveheart encouraged me along my route. Once arrived I learned that horses communicate with each other by breathing into each other noses. Cool right. And they touch with their noses too. Breaveheart invited me to touch him. I was scared, I cried and he comforted me by placing his head on me and purring.
The Medicine Horse Project is an amazing nonprofit that is dedicated to helping horses in need. Chris has been knowledgeable and helpful when a couple of unhandled horses fell into our lap. I appreciate the help she gave to get the horses into a better situation than we could provide. Thank you Medicine Horse Project!
This place is the real deal. Safe and clean facility. Horses individual needs are met. They host workshops to bring horses and people together to build confidence in them all.

Chris and Morgan are amazing. My 13 year old daughter was born with heart defects that required a pacemaker when she was 10 days old. About 2 months ago her pacer failed. Resulting in emergency surgery. My daughter does not like to be treated special, but this surgery was scary. Chris and Morgan hosted a birthday party for her and her friends. The stories behind the horses is touching. Chris explained how the kids were helping heal the horses. The kids felt empowered and excited by the opportunity. It was a beautiful, uplifting experience.
2023 has seen the return of programs! Watching participants heal trauma in rescued horses while releasing trauma of their own is awe inspiring. Such important work in our current world. Fulfilling the mission of MHP rescuing horses and healing human hearts is creating a powerful impact with a ripple effect through out the community.

Meeting Chris, Morgan and the volunteers of Medicine Horse Project and getting a tour was very inspiring! The time and care they take to meet the needs of each unique resident is heartwarming and seeing the horses come back to life and happiness after their past traumas is something I will never forget! Chris' openness to holistic methods gives the horses even more ways to heal. Thank you to all of you for doing the work of angels on this earth!
The Medicine Horse Project came into our lives at a crucial time. My mom was moving from her ranch, where she had lived for 30 years, and wasn't able to take her senior horse with her. He had been born on the ranch and was such a big part of our family. But, because of his age and other small ailments, it was very difficult to find the right placement for him. As we began to feel hopeless for his future, the Medicine Horse Project came along and offered him a safe, loving new home!
The day he left the ranch was hard. But
Chris and Morgan understood what a difficult time this was for us, and sent us updates and photos as he got settled in his new paddock and made some new friends. He looked happy and relaxed in his new home. We felt so relieved and very blessed!
I cannot say enough good things about Chris and Morgan, and the Medicine Horse Project. The work they do for these beautiful animals is stellar. They have hearts of gold and a passion for helping others - both equine and human. The horses and clients served by the Medicine Horse Project are blessed beyond measure!
When I moved here from Wyoming almost a year ago now, I didn't know anyone and needed some thing to do to meet people. Looking for things to do Medicine Horse popped up read what they did and liked it, so I went out and met Chris. Through that meeting became a volunteer and in doing so I adopted my girl honey who was a surrender and now through her work looks beautiful and loves to be loved. My bond with her is building and trust is forming, which Chris helps you to accomplish through the adoption. The work that Chris does with these horses is remarkable she finds their needs and whats and helps them get it also helps them heal. She brings people and horses together in ways that is just lncredable. Her caring and compassion for helping them shows when talking to her. Since that time not only did I met someone who would know that I would meet my friend my best friend. I love that Woman! You rock it every day .
Chris and Morgan are amazing! I had the honor of teaching a clinic at The Medicine Horse Project in May. Accomodating, so knowledgable, take excellent care of the animals, loving and so dedicated.
The land holds such a beautiful healing energy and everyone felt so nurtured and cared for.
I cannot recommend a visit to, taking a clinic or dontating funds to this organization more highly.

Medicine Horse gave me back something I will forever hold dear- my deep and spiritual connection with Horses. Chris and Morgan are absolutely incredible people that cherish their herd, and their love for them is felt with the horses. The work Chris does is absolutely transformational, and I can't wait to go back as a volunteer! This place has my heart
Chris and Morgan are amazing. They go above and beyond for them horses. I have been there and saw the love they put into them. Keep it up!
The Medicine Horse Project is an absolute gift, not only to the horses they rescue but to the people they serve. I’ve been blessed to watch first-hand as wounded spirits (both equine and human) land at MHP and through the powerful and patient work of Chris and Morgan Nichols, find hope and healing. MHP’s commitment to the mission is admirable; what they accomplish with their resources is nothing short of amazing. I highly recommend tuning into their social media posts to watch the horses walk the path of trust and begin to thrive in the beautiful Nevada desert. I also celebrate with them when I see a rescued horse find a new forever home! I confidently donate to MHP knowing the funds will make a difference towards the good and vital work of health and healing.
What can I say about my experience at the Medicine Horse Project’s Glamp, Pamp and Revamp weekend?
1. I was absolutely worn out with what I’ve been dealing with for the past several years. Long, peaceful nights sleeping in my beautiful, cozy cabin after days filled with all kinds of activities, and lovingly-made delicious meals shared with wonderful women were exactly what I needed.
2. I had come to doubt my own worth and abilities, and to question not only why I have horses and other animals but why I also feel drawn to do more - to share my life and home with another horse, donkeys, goats etc. Each opportunity I had to engage with the horses (and donkeys!) during the weekend came with an initial “I can’t do it” or “but what if I fail” thought but Chris and the other participants were so non-judgmental and encouraging that I felt comfortable stepping into the ring (so to speak) and allowing myself to try. I made mistakes and I learned and not once did I feel dumb or “less than”, I just felt supported and loved. I came home with a whole new perspective on being with my current animals and some great tools that are helping me build more connection, communication and confidence with each of them. I came home knowing that there’s no reason for me NOT to open my home and heart to other animals who need a home, whether that’s permanently with me or if that comes through fostering with me for a while.
3. I have been told that to other people I come across as a safe person to be around. But I have been so embroiled in feeling shame about my weight and sadness about closing my business that I had lost touch with something that is at the core of who I am - a protector, nurturer, lover and friend. I didn’t know that the effort I have made to regulate my nervous system in the midst of tremendous stress and chaos over the past 20 years has actually paid off. I found that out through an amazing interaction with one of the mustangs, Apollo. He has very little reason to trust people and is not the kind of horse you can just walk straight up to and give a pat and a cookie. He calmly accepted my presence without feeling the need to move away and Chris observed that he responded that way because of my energy, which was calm, quiet and non-threatening. I did not know how deeply I needed to have that affirmed, so that was quite a gift from her. But to have him approach me and sniff my hand and take some cookies gently from my fingers was even more of a gift from him. A special moment indeed, one that I will never forget.
4. There is magic in sharing time and space with other women. Chris created activities that were educational, interesting, challenging and fun, and in the shared experiences and conversation friendships were made and deepened, insights and understanding grew and many moments found us laughing together with sheer joy. I enjoyed the time we spent together and feel as though we would pick up the friendship and conversation right away whether the next time we meet is a year from now or a decade away – the connections we made were honest and deep. It’s impossible to put a price on that!
Would I recommend this (or any of the Medicine Horse Project’s other programs) to others? ABSOLUTELY! I can’t predict what your experience will be but I can guarantee you will experience healing you didn’t know you needed, you will learn things that will apply to all of your relationships (both animal and human) and you will leave both feeling refreshed/rejuvenated and wishing you could spend just a few more days there.
Beyond a donor, I am a neighbor and an admirer of Medicine Horse Project. It is impossible to imagine a more expert and devoted team than Chris and Morgan in their care of these horses. Despite the inherent challenges of off-grid living in the Nevada high desert, they 've created a sanctuary in the truest sense of the word. They eagerly discern and exceedingly meet the needs of their horses, clients and community with a generosity of spirit that is so often evidently lacking elsewhere these days.
As an avid animal lover who grew up with horses, I know firsthand the sheer amount of work taking care of these magnificent animals can be. When horses experience abuse or neglect, that work multiples exponentially. Thank goodness for people like Chris Nichols and organizations like The Medicine Horse Project! It’s been my privilege to be involved with this program as a donor for the last few years. I love the work they’re doing…rescuing mistreated horses and donkeys, giving them a soft place to land as they heal, and helping those who are ready to find their forever home. I am constantly inspired by the courage of these animals, as well as the boundless love of those who help them, and there is truly a place reserved in Heaven for people like Chris who do this work.
As a resident of Imlay NV I have seen how the Medicine Horse Project has united the community. I personally know people and children who have benefitted from their participation in various programs offered at the MHP. I have seen young girl's self esteem blossom under the guidance of Chris Nichols and the youth program she's provided. I have seen women who were victims of domestic violence come out of their shells and actually flourish because of the horse/human programs offered at MHP. I'm sorry I don't know the correct terminology of what happens there but I do know that MHP and Chris are a god-sent for this rural area of Nevada where mental health, behavior health services are scarce.
Whenever I have out of the area visitors, MHP is always on our site seeing agenda. Chris is always so welcoming and knowledgeable and passionate about what she and the horses do. She is also just a very good person! I highly recommend Medicine Horse Project!
Chris and her organization, Medicine Horse Project is top notch. Chris has a very calm and intuitive way with horses and with people...along with a sense of fun and adventure. She makes every human/horse connection poignant and amazing...she sees the Magic and helps you find it. She allows you to connect in a way that is meaningful for you, while also bringing her vast experience to help keep everyone safe. She also takes excellent care of the horses, and strives to help them find their place or their people here in this challenging world. She is a saint and I highly recommend!!! (The picture is of me at a clinic, working with a young, un-gentled Mustang under Chris's watchful eye...sorry she isn't in the pic.)
I have Loved being apart of and watching MHP from CA to NV!
I met Chris & Morgan 4+ years ago now. Working with and gentling wild horses is one of my favorite things to do and they had some wild ones Chris said I just HAD TO MEET. That was when I first met Red DAWN(May 3 2020) a little 13h Red Bay Roan, rez mustang mare. Meeting and playing with all the horses and talking with Chris was MAGICAL. But Dawn & I shared something special, At the time I would have loved to adopt from MHP but was not in the spot to add more horses…. I had just began expanding my own horsemanship goals and became an equine and livestock vet tech pursuing her own Rescue and Trainer Dreams! With help and guidance from friends and fellow rescuers like Chris at MHP, I am fulfilling those dreams! Fast Forward, 1 year after meeting Dawn, MHP moved to Nevada and that is when Chris Contacted me again, she said “from that day I knew she needed you, can you take Dawn as a Rescue to Rescue Transfer?” This time I was in position and rescue was doing good, There was no hesitation! And things were set in motion! My Girl was coming home!
I’ll never forget the day Morgan delivered Dawn to me (: (May 16 2021) and all the memories and how far we have come together since! Dawn became CAYA, my little Cayenne Pepper, Spicey Girl, My Little Roany Pony! I finished her gentling, continued her training. We continue to build and grow today! Close to 1.5 yrs of being together. This once wild pony is now a citizen/ little lady, who is learning to ride and maybe one day drive, and I love her and her personality to bits and pieces!
MHP has helped myself and my rescue, HHH, in so many ways! From guidance, contracts/paperwork, to actual horse rescues and transportation! To placing Dawn with me, knowing who and what a horse needs. I am forever grateful and cherish our relationship!
I can not say it enough, just how much I appreciate MHP, their mission, and their commitment to giving these horses and humans the best they can and making sure forever love and Horse Medicine is possible.
Thank you C&M, Thank You MHP
The new Nevada facility was constructed with so much thought and care. The learning space for both horses and humans is welcoming and comfortable.
MHP is an honor to volunteer for.
Hands and hooves down one of THE BEST equine rescues there is! Medicine Horse Project goes above and beyond for the horses. Extremely down to Earth, caring, loving, and takes phenomenal care of every horse in their care. Absolutely an A+++++++ facility.
I would give them 1 million stars if I could ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ We've had the pleasure of meeting these two wonderful souls, Chris and Morgan. We got to tour the ranch and see these amazing animals that have been given second chances all because of Chris and Morgan. It is sad and devastating to hear some of the stories, but the love they have for these animals and what they do for them will fill your heart. We feel blessed to have had the chance to see such love and compassion at work. Just beautiful! They are a godsend.
Beautiful horse sanctuary. This facility relaxes horses and prepares them for forever homes. Chris and Morgan created a safe, beautiful sanctuary that allows horses and people to heal together. And there are so many different animals! From wild horses to kittens.
Chris and Morgan are amazing!
They are dedicated to the care and welfare of animals and work tirelessly to give love and quality of life to the animals they have given a home to.
I am happy to have gotten to know them
Chris and Morgan are absolutely amazing people. They always put the horses first and have a wonderful ability to heal each horse that walks through their gates.
I would highly recommend anyone looking for a horse, to start at the Medicine Horse Project.
You cannot go wrong with their kindness, knowledge, and truly genuine attitude.
Highly recommend
After volunteering at MHP for about a year I met a rescued Mustang named Perseus. Perseus had been returned to MHP by his first adopter due to the owners health issues. Chris and Morgan both told me “that’s your horse right there”. Perseus is technically a pony 13.3 hh and I’m 5’0 95 lbs. so that was certainly a perfect fit. But… I didn’t want a horse!
I enjoyed getting to know Perseus when mucking and feeding but it was the experience at the Break Through the Fear workshop that resulted in an “Aha” moment for me! The horse selected for the clinic was unable to participate, so Chris decided Perseus should be the one to assist with horse related exercises. The connection I felt with Perseus that day was exceptional and inspiring. I didn’t want to own a horse. Just be around and get my “fix” every now and again. But…. Perseus was different… our relationship grew and flourished!
In 2019, Chris contacted me as I had expressed some interest in maybe adopting Perseus. I was traveling and it occurred to me that this would truly be a missed opportunity for me so, I placed my deposit while out of the country.
About 60 days prior to the adoption, Perseus colicked. For 4 long days and nights, Chris and Morgan spent 24 hours a day making sure he received proper dosages of bute and stayed hydrated and moving. Thankfully, this was enough to get him through it. I am so grateful to MHP for working untiringly to save my lil pony.
Since November 2019, Perseus has been in full training. We have learned so much together and truly become a team. We have performed Western Dressage and taken trail rides as well as some cattle work. He is so fearless and makes such a great equine companion. I have also realized that Perseus and I have matching personalities! : ) which I know Chris and Morgan recognized long ago!
I’m so grateful to Chris and Morgan for planting the seed which resulted in my adopting Perseus.
Chris and her team are just phenomenal. She worked with me today to rescue a beautiful mustang off the kill lot. She picks him up Tuesday at 4:00 pm and I can’t wait to meet him in person! I have to wait 60 days after my vaccine but it will be well worth the wait! She’s a great horse whisperer and I learned so much at a weekend at Lifesavers Wild Horse Rescue run by Jill Starr!
I started volunteering a couple years ago and adopted my horse from them.
It is an amazing organization.
Chris and Morgan, are amazing people.
Their kindness, generosity, love, hope, compassion, and forgiving nature is what make this group of people and animals from so many different backgrounds and experiences, mesh so well.
There is a feeling of peace that comes when you are there, that you can't explain.
They take animals that have every reason to hate and fear humans, and help them heal and trust. They help both humans and animals connect with each other and help facilitate positive changes within both.
I have seen them take in horses that no one else would, and with patience and perseverance, have helped them become healthy, happy horses that everyone wants.
They are open to learning new ways to make both the people and horses lives better. They recently welcomed a horse trainer to the facility for a few days, who taught about the benefits of liberty work.
My personal horse is one they took in, that was so fearful that she would walk away from food if a person was close to it. She was underweight and had a lameness issue.
With Chris's work along with volunteers whom she taught how to work with her, she has become a lot more trusting. She is much healthier all around.
She is still stand-offish, but she is growing everyday and I have no doubt that it will continue.
I recommend them all of their programs and services.
I am forever grateful for all they have done and continue to do for people and animals.

I have been volunteering at MHP for several months now and absolutely love it.
The staff and volunteers are all welcoming and hard working. Chris and Morgan put their heart and souls into their love of animals and the rehabilitation and rehoming of these marvelous horses. Without their help, some of these horses would have been euthanized and never have gotten a second chance at life and love.
I love being able to come up and spend time with both the people and the animals.
I am currently working with a mustang that hasn't had the best luck with humans and is finding it hard to trust. It is a humbling experience to spend time with such a noble creature. I would never have gotten the opportunity or the knowledge I've gotten in the little time I've been here, if not for Chris, Morgan and all the animals here.
If you ever have the chance to spend some time there, you'll understand.
I have been volunteering at the Medicine Horse Project for a few months, helping to prepare horses to be adopted. I am very impressed with Chris and Morgan and with their well-organized and well-maintaned facility. They are warm and welcoming and enthusiastic aboit rehabilitating both horses and people. The commitment, knowledge and experience they bring to the program is obvious to anyone who visits. I love going out there!
Great folks, I love working out there.
Very tentative to the needs and safety of everyone around, including the animals.
Complete with beautiful scenery!
I am a survivor of severe torture, emotional/physical/sexual abuse. As a result of the constant and insidious abuse, I was diagnosed with Complex PTSD (Post Traumatic Syndrome Disorder). I would get anxious over simple things, I was easily overwhelmed, I had fear and trepidation in new situations/environments/people, I didn't allow myself to be vulnerable, I got depressed, scatter-brained and OCD about certain things. I have memory-lapses, night terrors and flashbacks--some triggers are known and still some are not. My body and mind were also in a Hypervigilant state 24/7-- "fight or flight" mode. I rarely slept and seemingly simple decisions took forever to make. I was terrified of making the wrong decision for it always had dire consequences and I was "stupid" for not being able to think for myself. I had no self-esteem, confidence and I didn't trust myself or anyone else. I have attempted suicide. I learned to always be guarded, waiting for the other shoe to drop. Not wanting to get close to people for fear that they will hurt me again. I had lost my sense of being, I had lost me.
In November 2020, I visited Medicine Horse Project and fell in love with two wild, recently gelding stallions, Warrior and Trooper (aka "the Wild Ones"), who were very fearful of people. Turns out, these boys have been neglected and/or abused too--by people that supposedly loved them. Both were part of a criminal neglect case and although their history is still a mystery for the most part, they will have a new and incredible future-- thanks to The Medicine Horse Project (MHP).
MHP stepped in February 2020 and brought these guys home when no one else wanted them (and the boys wanted no one else). Their mission is to rescue and rehab horses but they do so much more. They don't just rescue horses, they rescue people. Through workshops and individual training, Chris and Morgan Nichols give us and the horses the opportunity to heal. Some wounds we discover are ones we may not even know existed. Chris and Morgan pour their heart and soul into MHP-- it is more of a crusade than a mission. The level of love and care the horses (and people) receive is immeasurable and genuine. They truly change lives. I am eternally grateful that they have some into my life. When the student is ready, the teacher appears. I am ready.
Because horses possess a unique gift of healing, they are the perfect therapy addition for assisting in the physical, cognitive and emotional trauma recovery. The use of horses in therapy situations require a natural/holistic approach to releasing the trauma, wounds and anguish associated with the ordeals we may be facing or have been faced with in our lives. The beautiful connection and positive interaction is therapeutic and beneficial to both horse and human.
By nature, horses are playful, intuitive, creative, loving, intelligent, non-judgmental creatures who require us to be patient, have structure, consistency and discipline in our lives. But most of all, they require us to to keep our spirit (or get it back) and be true to ourselves. Horses never lie. They can and will mirror our behavior, reminding us of the things we need to work on in order to restore our health, heal and move on.
I am in the process of adopting and gentling these magnificent creatures which is a dream come true! The connection and love that I feel with these two boys actually scares me because it is so deep. We have so much in common. I have cried several times while working with them after the emotional connections-- a place I haven't allowed myself to go for a very long time. And after all they have been through, their willingness to let me into their lives is amazing. I wholeheartedly believe it is because MHP created the safe and loving environment to prepare these boys (and all of the other horses in their care) to be willing to trust and love again. To be able to find their forever humans and home where they can grow and flourish and know what unconditional love is.
It will take time and patience, but together we will learn to trust again. We will learn to overcome the past wounds and begin healing. I believe we already have begun that healing process. We have a ways to go before I can bring Warrior an Trooper to their forever home. Not only am I still building/creating it, but we all have a lot of training and guidance (with MHP's help) to go through before we are ready. And then, and only then will they come home with me. But these boys are worth it. We are worth it. And I look forward to every moment.
With the continued support of family, friends and even strangers, the lives of many more horses and people can be changed forever through Chris, Morgan and MHP.
I found the Medicine Horse Project almost two years ago. Spoke with the director Chris Nichols on the phone, and planned a visit up with the family. When we got there I knew this was where I’m bringing home my forever horse. She introduced us to Emerald, and well the rest is history. Chris has such a fabulous process to make sure you are making the right decision. No rash moments are allowed. So a second visit was scheduled. The 4 hour drive home all I could think about was getting back to see my horse. The moment I got the call that I was indeed approved was the best call. Emerald was delivered on my youngest daughters birthday. She is such a blessing to have in our family. Finding the Medicine Horse Project was one of the greatest things to happen to our family. We are forever grateful that they allowed us to love one of there babies.

When I started my search for adopting a horse I stumbled apoun Chris and The Medicine Horse Project. From the moment I got off the phone with Chris arranging a date and time to come up and meet the heard I knew that she was the woman that I was going to adopt my first horse from. The Medicine Horse project is not about making the next dollar. They are about making sure the horses find there forever home. I always dreamed of wanting a horse as a little girl and never got one. I now know that I was meant to meet Chris and find my forever horse. I adopted Emerald a four year old quarter mustang cross. I drove over four hours with two kids and a husband to meet my horse. After arriving I fell in love with the atompshere, the people and the horses! The property is kept immaculately tidy, horses are taken care of above and beyond. After realizing I had found my soul horse, unlike a lot of places that would have taken the money and called it a day, Chris actually called references and made sure she was crossing her t’s and dotting her i’s. They also required a second visit, to make sure everyone was still happy with the decision. I would recommend The Medicine Horse Project to anyone who wants to adopt an amazing horse and meet amazing people! Finding Chris and The Medicine Horse Project has changed my life and my families life for the better.
I’ve had the pleasure of visiting The Medicine Horse Project a few times and I was so blessed to see the love that Chris and Morgan bestow on each and every animal. Chris gave the tour and told me of each animals needs and the healing that each one required. She always gave each one loving pats and kisses to those who were calm enough. And to those who were still mistrusting, she spent time speaking softly and encouragingly. These two people have so much love to give to the animals in their care and their knowledge of what each individual needs is awesome, truly.

I have known the Medicine Horse Project for 5+ years as they are neighbors. I have donated to them frequently. My husband and I have been fortunately able to see the good they do on a daily basis. From dis guarded camp horses to abused horses, they have all been loved, trained and taken care of. I have seen horses and people grow in confidence while at Medicine Horse project. Every time I give I know what difference my donation is making. THANK YOU Chris and MORGAN for all you do.
I had the pleasure of meeting Chris and Morgan Nichols in August 2019. I found out through a Facebook post that a local children's horse camp was sending the herd off to the slaughter auction, they were no longer needed. How these horses became the camps trail horses is a whole other story, will not go there.
Chris and Morgan of The Medicine Horse Project jumped into action, and arranged to pick up the unwanted horses.
Six were picked up, and a seventh was added at a later date. My heart broke when I saw these rescued horses. An infected painful eye, rotten painful teeth, lameness and poor overall health. Their spirits were no where to be seen. These horses were ridden all summer, enduring their pain, for the pleasure of children.
Chris and Morgan quickly attended to their needs. Lots of love, Vet and Farrier care, and did I mention lots of love.
It was the goal of The Medicine Horse Project to bring out the spirit in each horse. I witnessed that. Each time I visited I could see each and every horse become Alive.
I fell in love and adopted Walter, now Wally. He needed some serious dental care that I was willing to finance. Morgan Nichols was gracious enough to transport Wally for his dental vet care to a Nevada vet clinic.
I also adopted a mini horse that Medicine Horse had rescued from another abusive situation.
I have such respect and love for Chris and Morgan Nichols, The Medicine Horse Project. They have devoted their lives for the rescue, rehabilatIng and Rehoming of so many wonderful horses.they will be my friends forever.
I have added a picture of Wally and Jennings, the mini horse.
TMHP is a stand-out horse rescue among rescues. I was working on placing a very large herd of unhandled/feral horses from a neglect case, and they stepped up and took in three of them, including one horse that another rescue snubbed and said likely couldn’t be placed.
I’ve been incredibly impressed with them from the start. They are so caring and knowledgable, and they really tap into the spiritual essence of the hoses In their care. They understand that horses are good medicine, and both people and animals benefit from healing them. I highly recommend supporting TMHP!
As a veteran who has always had a passion for horses I knew upon leaving the military that I wanted to immerse myself back into equestrian life with my forever horse. It was The Medicine Horse Project that made this dream become reality. My forever friend, Jedi, was rescued and rehabilitated by them. He had been long neglected and abused to the point of losing an eye. This was never a deterrent in his care through the rescue. The love, kindness, and healing they provided was reflected through him while I watched his recovery from afar over time. When he was ready for adoption, I was able to go meet him and see what he was like. It was very clear to me that he trusted the rescue, and absolutely loved Chris, Morgan, and many other volunteers who helped facilitate him back to being healthy. It was love at first sight. The Medicine Horse Project introduced me to a lifelong best friend, and I will be forever grateful. He and I have our good days and bad days, but the bond and trust we have in each other gets us through it all. I will never be able to put into words the love I have for that horse, but I can guarantee he knows it. It would be difficult to find people who are more genuine and invested than Chris and Morgan. The love that pours out of them is easily identified when watching how animals flock to their side. Jedi fell into the hands of angels the day he was rescued by them. They gave him his life back. They truly are one of kind people.
The Medicine Horse Project is a rescue like none that I have known.
Yes they rescue horses, goats, chickens etc. But they rescue people too!
There is so much more to this place. Which is why "project " is the best description. Who's healing who? Who's helping who? Come find out. I bet you get more out of it than the animals have. And THAT'S saying a lot!
My best friend George, a OTTB rescue passed away and to say I devastated was an understatement. My amazing husband immediately started looking for a new best friend for me and though he had nothing but good intentions, I was no where ready.
He and a buddy had been to the medicine project and as soon as he seen The general another OTTB he knew I would fall in love, if he could just get me up there. A month went by and I finally had the strength to donate a barrel of food that had been George’s and a bale of hay. As soon as I seen General I burst into tears as he laid his head on my shoulder. He knew my heart was broken. I still wasn’t ready though. I went up a few more time to groom Gen and hang out but still had heartache.
One night Chris gave me a call and explained that Gen had a cut above his eye and Morgan was out of town and asked if I could assist her. I dropped everything and went running. He wouldn’t let anyone but me clean and dress the wound and I knew we were destined. I went home and talked with the hubby and we adopted Gen.
He has been an amazing addition to our family and I couldn’t imagine life without him. Chris and Morgan truly love these horses (and goats and chickens) and want these amazing creatures to get the best homes. Chris, Morgan and The volunteers at Medicine horse project are angels. If your looking for your best friend or want to volunteer your time you should definitely contact them.
About three months ago we started taking Julia (my daughter) to The Medicine Horse Project Ranch. She has loved horses since she was two years old and she is now almost 11. We wanted to make her dream a reality by connecting with horses and learning about how to care for them. We were welcome with open arms and big hearts at Medicine Horse Project. After several weeks with spending time with the horses Julia has found a beautiful connection with one of the horses. Her name is Jackie a.k.a. Sundance. Julia glows and is in her element when with Sundance. Also my other daughter Etta has found a love of horses she didn’t know about. We have adopted Sundance and Julia and family couldn’t be happier. The heart and soul I see between the horses and my daughters is beautiful. Not shortly after having Sundance in her forever home we saw a sadness in Sundance. She was missing her best friend Annalena -a beautiful Peruvian Paso at the Medicine Horse Project. Every time we visited the MHP ranch and we took Sundance out to train prior to bringing her home Annalena would cry, whinny, and run for her BFF to come back to her stall. Seeing Sundance sad made me realize she needed her friend. The family discussed this for a couple weeks. In the couple weeks my girls and I volunteered at MHP and tried to get to know Annalena. One day my daughter Julia and I were mucking Annalena’s stall. Annalena who always was standoffish to me had come over and put her head on my shoulder and I knew she was my horse. We adopted Annalena a few days later. Chris and Morgan delivered both horses and helped get them settled into their new home. There has been several minor issues with the horses since they have been here at our home. Sundance and Annalena fought for about three weeks over who was going to be alpha. Being a new horse owner any time I have called Chris she comes to my house and addresses the issue. It doesn’t matter what time of day or night she and Sarah Van-Nort a friend and volunteer at MHP come to my rescue. From the Farrier who had a hard time with trimming the horses feet, to Sundance feeling colicky, to Annalena having diarrhea Chris came and helped us immediately, willingly, and lovingly. We have had Chris from MHP come nearly every week to horse train with us. She has taught us so much and are very grateful for her. Not only is she a horse whisperer, she is a teacher of how horses heal you and make you feel good about yourself and others around you. Chris and Morgan at MHP ARE bright lights. We have established an amazing bond, a sisterhood that I have never known. I feel blessed that she is in my life. The knowledge, prep, and bond we have received from Chris Nichols has been incredible. Chris at medicine horse project does amazing work with teaching and continues to teach us how to care for these healing horses. Chris Nichols is a horse whisperer and a forever friend. The Medicine Horse Project is a nonprofit organization. The Medicine Horse Projects mission is the rescue, rehabilitation, and adoption of horses who have suffered neglect and abuse or are in jeopardy of being slaughtered. To rescue horses and make the healing process begins with hope, care, love, training and funds. Starting over and building a brand new horse rescue from bottom up is a challenging task. The medicine horse project is in need of everything to care for the horses. Lead ropes, hay, halters, corral panels, troughs, hay feeders, grooming tools, buckets. Not to mention all the vet and farrier services. Any support of any kind of any amount would be so helpful to this organization. Chris and Morgan Nichols are a godsend. The Medicine Horse Project has blessed us and we will be forever grateful. Thank you.❤️ To all of you beautiful people in the world please take the time to visit MHP, donate anything you can to keep this magical home alive for these beautiful healing horses and for these angels from heaven Chris and Morgan Nichols at Medicine Horse Project . Check out their Website for stories of rescued horses and more

I visited the Medicine Horse Project to see what it was all about. The Nichols were kind and showed me around and spoke to me about the reason there is such a place. This is an amazing work they do to help others cope with difficult times from their lives. People know they have a place to go to make a genuine connection with another living thing, non judgmental and always happy to see them. The horses seem to thrive after their difficult pasts as well. It so happens that days activity was painting "horses kisses" where we put a non toxic coloring on an apple on a plate, and fed it to the horses. As they moved it around the plate to get a good bite, it created a picture with the slice of apple. Such a cool idea. Definitely recommend YOU come check it out and make a donation too :)
The Medicine Horse Project just never sleeps!!!
The daily work they are committed to is vital to equine and human souls alike!
Year round they are right there doing what’s needed, and I know it’s not always the fun stuff !!! But they get it done.
I have attended 4 MHP women’s empowerment retreats with this group.
As well as learning so much about the mustang gentling process, I have had some profound personal insights, and experienced such amazing support and community !
Medicine Horse Project
The noble horse. I just saw the "Cowboy Camp" horses today. Pitiful. They are having their needs attended to now but some are still very sick. The smell of infection was still very strong around two of them. They are on antibiotics. I don't know what to say about a society that would think it is ok for children to ride these horses in a cowboy camp when it is obvious the horses were suffering. Even though all of them were in tremendous pain when they arrived, these horses still allowed children on their backs and let them have fun. Had it not been for Chris and Morgan, the horses next stop was a kill truck. Given the horrible feet, the wounds with infection and maggots and the smell, these horses did not receive even basic care while at cowboy camp. Not sure what sort of horse camp doesn't address the needs of the horse if not with the kids, at least with the staff? Chris and Morgan work hard to make sure if a horse is lucky enough to roll through MHP it has won the lottery for horses with medical care and a good home. Every horse deserves a chance. Thank you both for all you do with horses and humans.
With hearts of platinum Chris and Morgan manage the Medicine Horse Project with the highest level of knowledge, dignity, integrity and love to horse and human alike. Although rescuing horses is a very serious obligation, both demonstrate extraordinary leadership, commitment and passion with a huge dose of humor. I love visiting the ranch and spending the afternoon with them, their many volunteers and their menagerie of animals. Horses, dogs, chickens and now a pair of baby Billy goats. Never a dull moment. Chris and Morgan receive no monies for their tremendous efforts and rely upon donations to help pay the bills. And on top of everything they do for the horses and humans, they both continue to maintain their 9 to 5 jobs. I think that they both must be super human to accomplish all they do. A truly rewarding non-profit to donate to, I humbly encourage all to do so.
Medicine Horse project is a genuine place to work & play with some of the biggest hearts this world has to offer(medicine horse project operators especially included❤️). They selflessly give the gift of love with dignity to these horses in their care as well as well as enriching our community. Such joy and love for their mission is clear from your first moments on the property. My life has been changed in all the best ways from my experiences with the Medicine Horse Project. My deepest Gratitude to you.
We have many rescues in this area, but this is the only one I trust. I have seen first hand that the horses are #1! That's pretty rare nowadays. Uber volunteered only a few times here and am always welcomed back. The horses always look amazing and everyone is smiling. This is a great cause.
I love this organization and what it has to offer to animals and people alike! Chris and Morgan have shown us what it means to run a nonprofit helping horses and veterans. I am inspired to help them in the mission!

Thank you ❤️
As a horse rescue advocate, Chris Nichols brings a lot to the table. Not only does her Horse Medicine Network organization provide shelter and adoptions for horses at risk, but she also instructs groundwork classes for horse owners and horse rescue volunteers.
With that said, Chris is one of the nicest and most supportive persons I have ever met in horse rescue. I recommend supporting her cause to end equine suffering.
I have watched the progress of some of the horses at MHP. I see someone who takes the time with troubled horse and does push them over the edge to get training done.. I go back to John Lyons way of "take the time it takes" I have found in my own personal workings with these types ,that this is a great way of getting the most out of troubled horses. Chriss does like wise and it shows with her results... THANK YOU CHRISS

Ron we appreciate you and your support!
I am an adopter of a beautiful mare from Medicine Horse Project. Not only was she extremely well cared for and trained by Medicine Horse, but she also participated in many workshops and healing sessions with humans to help them overcome trauma and fear. I have also participated in workshops at Medicine Horse and can say first hand that my life has been enriched through my involvement with them! Horses are good medicine!!

The director has a way of working with all people and all horses and helping everyone heal and thrive.
A great and beautiful environment for the horses they rescue. I have seen first hand how their love has transformed many. They are great people.
Regardless if I am at MHP for a workshop or to help muck, I always leave having learned something useful or insightful, having laughed hard, and feeling grounded and calm. Perhaps it’s the location, or the horses, or something else. Or perhaps it’s a combination of things:
Chris’s openness to sharing her often painful yet funny horse experiences, and the techniques she used to overcome her own, or a horse’s, obstacles is amazing. Her ability to tune into the unique issues of each horse that comes to MHP is also startling. Likewise, Morgan’s willingness to generously lend his confidence to those who are afraid of horses is uncanny; clearly, confidence is contagious! As is his limitless dedication to building (literally speaking) a safe and thoughtfully planned home for MHP’s animals. The chickens ain't complaining about their new home! But, their generosity doesn’t stop there.
Morgan and Chris ensure that MHP is different from many large animal organizations by encouraging volunteers and workshop participants to experience the horses. They want people to groom, touch, feel, encounter, listen to, or just sit quietly with the horses. With horse and human safety always paramount, they permit volunteers or workshop participants to stretch their limits and/or skills by allowing (never forcing) them to work with MHP horses. If a volunteer wants to learn something new, they welcome it when possible. Such a unique opportunity!
Just as they understand that each horse brings its own history and issues to MHP, they understand that the workshop participants bring their unique histories and may experience the energy of the horses differently. Some people are brought to tears by the energy, others start giggling, and some feel 'just a twinge' of 'something'; there is no right or wrong. Chris and Morgan realize this and provide a fun, open, safe and supportive place to experience the “good medicine” in whatever way is true to one’s heart.
Chris and Morgan will say that it’s the energy of the land that is responsible for the calmness you feel when you get out of your car; that MHP’s horses are calm and trusting because the land fosters it. There’s a little more to it than that. The knowledge, humor, and kindness that they generously share with MHP’s volunteers, workshop participants, adopters, and others, as well as the trust they place in these people, nurture the energy of MHP. And, that energy enriches the land and amplifies the “good medicine” of the horses.
MHP’s motto is “horses are good medicine.” I can’t think of better medicine than to spend a few hours with Chris, Morgan, and MHP’s horses.
I found my forever heart horse while visiting Medicine Horse Project…it wasn’t planned…it just happened. My beautiful 4 yr old Mustang cross mare touched my heart and I adopted her shortly thereafter. As part of the “healing herd”, she had touched and helped many people who had participated in their wonderful resilience programs and workshops. Her connection to people was very strong, and she knew her purpose. She was wild when she arrived at Medicine Horse, and through the patient gentling and training she got from Chris and Morgan and the volunteers there, she was able to quickly integrate into life beyond her job at Medicine Horse. The calm, safe environment they provide helped her build confidence and trust that now shows tenfold as she is exposed to many new things. She is ready to learn more and please me in whatever I ask of her. As with all the horses at Medicine Horse, she is in exceptional physical condition due to their diligent care, and when she arrived at her new home in a public boarding barn, everyone was impressed with how healthy and well-adjusted she was knowing she had come from a rescue.
I cannot recommend Medicine Horse Project enough! I would give a million stars if I could! Thank you for all you do to not only save these wonderful horses, but also the humans they touch through your programs.
I am a female veteran with PTSD and many injuries from deployment. You may guess that this reaks havoc on not only my physical state, but my mental state as well. I learned about the Medicine Horse Project through my best friend and went up there with her. I was just in awe of the amazing energy of the horses, trees, mountain ranch, the drive to get there and people I met that were volunteers and the events that were held. I had no doubt in my mind that I wanted to be a volunteer and be a part of this amazing cause that immediately gave me a sense I have never felt before. Even though I can't do much with my body, I am certainly doing as much as I can with my mind and spirit with these horses. I am sure they are helping me more than I am helping them.
Morgan and Chris Nichols are true angels for this cause. I am amazed how many horses they save from slaughter and rescue. Once the horses are ready to be adopted after being gentled and tamed, they spend time with the new owner and horse(s) to ensure comfort for both the horse and new owner. I am truly thankful for this opportunity. In the midst of healing the horses, I am also being healed.
It is amazing how Morgan and Chris have turned this piece of property into a safe haven for both horses and people. Medicine Horse Project has opened it's doors and hearts to those in need of love and friendship, horses and people. It is a blessing to watch the volunteer's not only feel safe and to connect with these horses but it is just as amazing to watch the personality change in the horses as they welcome the love and attention they get. I have heard volunteers say it is life changing to be able come to this ranch and become attached to the herd and Morgan and Chris.
I've had a lot of experience with this nonprofit group because Chris & Morgan are family members. I've seen veterans, brownie troops, families, and volunteers touched by their experiences at the Medicine Horse Project. They not only give these amazing horses a second chance at life but they also give people a purpose and love. We are very proud of what they are willing and eager to lovingly contribute to their community and more.
The Medicine Horse Project (MHP) is one of many horse rescue 's in California. I have experienced a few yet none with the compassion and heart of MHP.
Working side by side with a dedicated group of volunteers Chris and Morgan Nichols work tirelessly to ensure the horses have a safe and healthy environment while waiting for their forever homes.
I have watched them grow over the past few years and am so excited for their next adventure/partnership which will raise much needed funds to maintain the horses homes and make improvements to expand their programs to heal others. Horses ARE good medicine.
My photo is of the healing herd welcoming Davio home. Davio is the original rescue horse of MHP.
The amount of great detail to nutrition and bringing rescued horses back to health, both physical and behavioral, is top notch.
The medicine horse project is a great organization with wonderful people. I am the horse aunty to a recently adopted horse;Emerald. Chris was so knowledgable and shared her knowledge with us. Such a great atmosphere and beautiful horses. I highly recommend The Medicine Horse Project.
I learned about the Medicine Horse Project through a neighbor. My husband and I were greeted warmly at the ranch by proprietors Chris and Morgan Nichols. They immediately introduced themselves and started “chatting us up” about the organization and the mission, which is to save and rehabilitate both horses and people. I certainly didn’t think I needed rehabilitating but I knew I wanted to renew the connection with horses that I had so enjoyed when I was a child. From the moment I met Chris and Morgan, I knew they were listening to me at a deeper level. They were willing to patiently guide me to be sensitive and open when communicating with the horses. I had to drop any artifice and learn how to relax and be open with these amazing creatures. Learning how to undo and be comfortable with the emotions I had worked hard to cover up all my life was amazing and transformational.
Working at the ranch has taught me that there is a more subtle level of self observation and communication. I wish I would have learned more of these skills when I was dealing with my staff when I was working!
I didn’t realize there were so many horses needing special attention because of many different unfortunate circumstances. Chris and Morgan evaluate the physical and emotional needs of each horse. With their direction, we all slowly and patiently love and lead them back to health. Their health demands are not free so there is a constant need for donations to keep this organization sufficiently funded. I had no idea how much it cost to feed a single horse, not to mention the auxiliary needs that come with basic horse maintenance and veterinary care!
This is an organization with a lot of heart. Chris and Morgan are inspirational teachers and leaders and the volunteers I work with are awesome. We are united in our determination to rehabilitate all the horses. Some will not be able to be adopted because of their physical condition, but they still need to feel that they are safe and will need our love and support for as long as they are alive.
If you are looking for a cause that truly needs your help, as well as one that helps animals in need on a daily basis, I strongly recommend the Medicine Horse Project.
My introduction to Medicine Horse Project was through a friend who was a volunteer and is also now a successful adopter of a wonderful horse. She knew of my familiarity with, and love of horses so she suggested we (my better half and I) attend an open house, have a look around, and meet the folks who run the place.
Fast forward 6+ months and turns out it was truly a blessing to have become associated with the Medicine Horse Project. As a regular volunteer being there weekly or more, it provides me with a unique perspective to their efforts and mission, which has created what will likely become lasting relationships.
Their wholehearted dedication to the animals they serve is nothing short of amazing, as is the continued positive impact they strive have on the horse community. I couldn’t possibly find a better or more deserving non profit to donate my time and efforts to. Rarely can we find the type of people and effective organization as Medicine Horse Project represents.
This organization has the most dedicated group of volunteers. They truly care for the horses, the cleanliness, and the success of all involved at the facility.
All donations truly go to the horses and programs. No salaries. This is a completely volunteer run group.
As an adopter and participant in their clinics, I cannot say enough amazing things about Medicine Horse. Their horses receive the best possible care, and they really encourage the partnership between horse and human. They set their adopters up for success.
I had the ultimate privilege of attending the Medicine Horse Project's first Women's Empowerment retreat in 2016 where I was paired up with an adorable Mustang yearling. At that time, I had been without a horse for nearly four years after I lost my first mare to colic in 2012. Even years later, my heart still remained in pieces from losing the only horse I was ever able to call my own--one I had even grown up with throughout my childhood. Not only were the lessons and encouragement soul soothing, but the little gelding I was paired up with gave me a precious moment I will never forget and truly helped me begin piecing my heart back together once again. This retreat allowed me to be vulnerable, to open my heart to horses and again and to reconnect with who I really was inside. By our final day together, I realized I couldn't leave this special little horse, always wondering where he ended up and if we were meant to be together. It was in that moment, I knew in my heart that he was mine and I couldn't let go. Reign is my first gelding, but I love him with all of my heart and I can't wait to continue strengthening our bond as we begin training him under saddle next summer. It's a true blessing to wake up and see him in our herd every morning--a herd that is only possible because of him. I will forever be thankful to the Medicine Horse Project for truly helping me to get on the path of healing and for introducing me to my wonderful steed in shining armor who really rescued me. If there is any non-profit that is worthy of your support, it's the Medicine Horse Project.
What impressed me most was the atmosphere at the ranch. When the owners, Chris and Morgan Nichols (super nice folks), introduced each horse and told it's background story, I could feel the positive energy between the horse and them. Wow! It's so peaceful and serene among the giant pines and cedars. One could stay there forever! If you are looking for something but don't know what, check out Medicine Horse Project.
Medicine Horse Project is a great organization that helps horses and people fine each other making two separate pieces whole. I obtained my Welsh Pony Meg. She is a very sweet girl who has come so far, first through the love and attention she received from Chris and then with a home with my little gang. I greatly appreciate her time commitment and effort this organization provides for these animals who may not otherwise have a chance. Thank you for all you do!
