I had the ultimate privilege of attending the Medicine Horse Project's first Women's Empowerment retreat in 2016 where I was paired up with an adorable Mustang yearling. At that time, I had been without a horse for nearly four years after I lost my first mare to colic in 2012. Even years later, my heart still remained in pieces from losing the only horse I was ever able to call my own--one I had even grown up with throughout my childhood. Not only were the lessons and encouragement soul soothing, but the little gelding I was paired up with gave me a precious moment I will never forget and truly helped me begin piecing my heart back together once again. This retreat allowed me to be vulnerable, to open my heart to horses and again and to reconnect with who I really was inside. By our final day together, I realized I couldn't leave this special little horse, always wondering where he ended up and if we were meant to be together. It was in that moment, I knew in my heart that he was mine and I couldn't let go. Reign is my first gelding, but I love him with all of my heart and I can't wait to continue strengthening our bond as we begin training him under saddle next summer. It's a true blessing to wake up and see him in our herd every morning--a herd that is only possible because of him. I will forever be thankful to the Medicine Horse Project for truly helping me to get on the path of healing and for introducing me to my wonderful steed in shining armor who really rescued me.
