Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Arts & Culture, Children & Youth, Education, Radio, Youth Development

Mission: SLB Radio Productions, Inc. (SLB) uses radio and audio to amplify voices of youth—and members of other communities whose stories are often marginalized—to educate, empower, and build community. Our work is based on the principle that all people have the capacity and right to develop their authentic voice and know that their voice matters—that they matter—and that their voice can be used for self-expression, inquiry, and change. SLB incorporates these methods into real world learning opportunities that keep students deeply engaged as they sharpen academic skills (e.g. speaking, active listening, reading, writing); workforce readiness skills (interviewing, working in teams, meeting deadlines, following a process, sifting through data); technical skills (digital storytelling, editing); and life skills (creative expression, critical thinking, confidence, cooperation, respect for others, curiosity).

Results: SLB began operations in 1978 with The Saturday Light Brigade, a weekly public radio program delivering a blend of music, puzzles, interviews, and live performances to a multigenerational audience. Programming grew dramatically between 1990 and 2000, as SLB built a strong, loyal audience and earned 10 local and national awards. During this period, SLB began providing off-air youth workshops in audio technology and self-expression. While successful, using a traditional radio station as the location for these workshops limited the ability to deepen learning experiences. With this objective in mind, SLB formed a 501(c)(3) in 2000 and—with remarkable support from the broadcast industry, foundations, corporations and individual donors—opened a $250,000 studio suite in the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh (CMP) in 2004. Our flagship radio program now airs on six radio stations and five streaming platforms. We also operate two stand-alone internet radio stations, including Youth Express (featuring original writing and conversation from teens and recipient of several national and international awards) and iQ Kids Radio (featuring music for young children and operated in collaboration with WQED). Capture and Production: i. School workshops. SLB staff members bring digital recorders, microphones, and podcasting tools to schools and welcomes youth to our studios. ii. Oral history collection. SLB trains youth to interview and record stories from adults. Major projects include: (“Crossing Fences,” “From There to Here,” “Brashear Brings You the World,” and “Girl Talk,” in which African American teen girls interview African American professional women from their neighborhood—it is part oral history, and part mentoring); iii. Youth Media Advocacy Program. In collaboration with Carlow University, SLB brings digital media making tools to high school students in Homewood, the Hill District, West End and Northside to strengthen skills in self-advocacy and the creation of persuasive media); and iv. Youth Express Internships. SLB trains teens to use the tools and practices of professional journalism to create articles, commentaries, and documentaries. More than 100 documentaries have been produced to date on topics ranging from gentrification to solar energy to homelessness. Publishing: i. Live Radio. Broadcast live since 1978, The Saturday Light Brigade is the national award-winning weekly public radio show that led to the launch of SLB as a non-profit in 2000. ii. Youth Express. From poetry to talk shows, hip hop to string quartets, the Youth Express service delivers authentic youth voices via a 24/7 internet radio station, app, and on-demand service. iii. Neighborhood Voices. This online archive includes more than 10,000 assets for public download and streaming. iv. Podcasts. SLB produces three weekly podcasts showcasing voices of marginalized communities. SLB has long been recognized for its innovative approach to delivering world-class programming.

I'm on my way to college next year, and I've listened to SLB, almost every Saturday, for as long as I can remember!
The music and games are fun, and the host Larry Berger is always full of cheerful energy. It's a great show for the weekend! Whether in winter, summer, spring, or autumn, SLB always offers something exciting to hear about! I hope this show won't ever stop!

I have been a fan of Saturday Light Brigade's programming for many years. I have also been a guest on the show several times. My most recent experience was extremely rewarding. Larry and the SLB crew welcomed me into the studios with 2 of my vocal students. I brought them on the show to perform their own compositions and to promote my monthly, all ages jam session "Tune It! Tuesdays". The students had an amazing experience and we got such wonderful feedback from listeners, family, friends and new fans. I am truly grateful to Saturday Light Brigade for continually focusing listeners on our regions wonderful music and cultural scene. I couldn't image the airwaves without Mr Berger's contributions.

SLB Radio and Larry Berger helped to bring a new and exciting learning opportunity to my high school students. I attended a podcast workshop at the SLB studio and was so impressed by all of the possibilities for use in an educational setting that I applied for a grant from our district foundation. I was able to purchase 5 sets of audio recorders and our students LOVE having the option to create a podcast to demonstrate their knowledge.

In addition to their work in the community, SLB provides a weekly opportunity for kids to develop and share a love of music, games and learning with their parents. We have been listening for over 25 years and still enjoy SLB every Saturday.

As a family we listened to SLB every Saturday. We listened to the music and participated in the games and puzzles. My son called in answers and was excited when he was correct. It was a fun activity to do as a family. The show helps to promote curiosity and learning. My son enjoyed when his name was announced on air on his birthday.
In addition, my son called in to the show and played the piano on the air. The hosts were patient, kind and encouraging. I worked with the host to arrange my son's scout troop visit to the radio studio and they learned how the equipment works and how the show is produced.
The hosts agreed to be the Master of Cermonies for the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg's Fall Festival and they did a great job. I have had enjoyable conversations with other parents who I discovered also listen every Saturday. We learned new information and discovered new music we enjoyed. Though my son is grown, I still listen to SLB.

SLB Radio is a unique institution that is deeply respected in the Pittsburgh children's community for providing music, fun and games to a younger audience. It is also a show that adults love for the way it promotes and supports local singer-songwriters in Pittsburgh.

As the SLB tagline states, the weekly program gets Saturdays off to a good start. But the weekend production is only the tip of the iceberg that Larry and his crew have created; there is the vast community work in which SLB is engaged. Although I'm a client served, i.e., listener, I'm also a donor, eager to see the work continued and grow.

I am a regular listener and more so a regular admirer of all that SLB provides to the community. They provide such an important venue to voices that we might not otherwise hear.

Our family band has had the opportunity to perform twice with SLB Radio, and my oldest daughter participated in the SLB Radio summer journalism program. Larry does some amazing work facilitating a rich community for kids and musicians in the Pittsburgh area.

I have interacted with SLB in several ways. I am a longtime listener of the "Saturday Light Brigade" radio show and love the music and the puzzles. Also, the show is a great way to learn about community events. I have gotten several ideas for things to do by listening. On the flip side, the show also is a great way for organizations to provide information about their events and award-winning youths to listeners. I have taken advantage of that as the publicity manager for a local juggling festival and the PR person for a local museum. Also, I am a big fan of the "Crossing Fences" series of oral histories in which African American teens interview the men in their communities. The recordings are really interesting, and the program must provide a great learning experience for the youths involved. This program is just one of several educational opportunities SLB provides for young people. SLB truly is a great nonprofit!

SLB also provides a great way for nonprofit organizations to share information about their events with the community. Also, I love the oral histories it preserves.

For many years the SLB has taken a leading role in the Pittsburgh area to tell the stories of ordinary residents of the city, the stories that would never have been told. In creating this archive of oral histories the SLB has made great connections between all age groups. They have done this in very effective process that shows respect and appreciation of all who take part in their programs. Kudos to all the staff of the SLB in connecting generations, neighborhoods, and child-centered institutions throughout Pittsburgh

SlB Radio produces one of the best radio programs for all members of the community and beyond. I have been listening to the Saturday Light Brigade every Saturday morning for 25 years. Today, more than ever before, I appreciate having this program wherein I can escape the harsh rhetoric and dissention encountered on the news programs and social media. Larry Berger, the host, treats everyone with respect and civility. In addition, SLB Productions supports young people with the various programs it sponsors for them. I can confidently say that there are young people whose lives have been positively impacted by participating in these programs.
