I am a volunteer for TechGirlz which is a wonderful organization within Creating IT Futures to help teach middle school girls about technology. The curriculum teaches them to believe in themselves and to open their mind to a possibility of many different tech careers. I even got my 11 year old daughter and her friends to take a course and get involved! I highly recommend everyone to encourage middle school girls getting involved with TechGirlz.

I hosted a TechGirlz class using CompTIA's Spark curriculum and services. It was a free course hosted at Microsoft in Garden City to encourage middle school girls to think of tech differently. They had a blast creating websites from scratch. The curriculum was easy to understand and the girls loved it. This is one of many programs they have that makes an impact in the industry. Keep up the great work helping our youth build digital skills and possibly consider careers in tech down the road.

TechGirlz is an incredible nonprofit dedicated to inspiring young women in technology. As a student who has taken TechGirlz classes, I know what an inclusive environment it is to be surrounded by girls who love coding and technology as much as I do. I've learned so much, whether it be about Python or computer simulations, or designing apps. I highly recommend taking TechGirlz classes!

I've been part of TechGirlz for the past 4 years. I started volunteering during my freshman year when everything came to a standstill due to the pandemic and there was no in-person extracurricular activities available -- and I'm still continuing. A great organization with a great mission! I wish I knew about it during my middle school.

It was the pandemic (COVID-19) time when all extra-curricular activities and volunteer opportunities came to a standstill, and I was homebound. Then one day, I came to know about TechGirlz. I admire TechGirlz’s mission of promoting STEM among young women, the most underserved community of all. I was excited knowing that I could be involved in at least some online volunteering activities. I signed up to volunteer as a teaching assistant (TA) for a Python workshop. Not only did I enjoy the workshop, but my admiration for TechGirlz also deepened. With the outstanding curriculum, the availability of a wide variety of workshops on cutting-edge technologies, the coordination to organize the workshops, and the effort from all the board members and volunteers – I immediately felt like a part of the TechGirlz team! Since then, I’ve been volunteering as a lead instructor and a TA.

Last summer, I volunteered as a lead instructor and helped run a few workshops that don’t run often. I believe that teaching reinforces one’s learning. As a high school student interested in science and technology, I can also learn a lot through leading these workshops. More than that, I am glad to be part of the initiative to promote STEM among girls. I thought of extending my experience with TechGrilz this year, and I became an ambassador. I’m reaching out to the middle schools in my community from time to time to increase awareness among young girls. I’ll continue supporting TechGirlz with its mission, and I’d recommend anyone to join this organization – for a great cause and greater satisfaction.

Reading, writing, arithmetic and TECH. Tech has become a critical skill needed by all for both work and societal engagement. It is critical that we address the confidence gap in tech and start teaching our young students as early as middle school to engage with tech and become “digital literate.” CompTIA Spark does just that. Offering free resources to middle schools to introduce students to core tech skills, Spark brings tech lessons into the classroom making tech fun and relatable. Not only does Spark help students to be better prepared for a tech centric world, Spark can light the fire in a student to pursue a career in tech. Before students say “I can’t” to tech, Spark shows them they can, unlocking potential and teaching critical core skills - and possibly opening minds to potential great careers in tech. At the middle school level we are capturing all minds - regardless of gender, ethnicity or financial position - giving everyone the opportunity to learn the skills they need to perform well in society - and potentially bring diversification to the tech industry.

I am so proud to be associated with this organization. From inspiring our nation's youth to dream of a career in technology, to empowering adults with the training and tools they need to land fulfilling tech jobs, CITF is truly making a difference. I had the great honor of speaking at the graduation ceremonies of the Twin Cities first all women CITF class and was so moved by how their experience with CITF was transforming their lives. I met women who were homeless, some out of work for years, others finally pursuing their interest in tech. These women learned more than computer skills, and found more than a job. They learned a lot about themselves, and found their inner strength and confidence to handle and conquer any challenge and opportunity that came their way moving forward.
Every single individual on the the CITF team is exceptional. They are committed to their work and passionate about their mission. Technology is now driving virtually every industry It is the industry that quite possibly is having the greatest impact on our economy and society. The CITF team is working hard towards building a stronger and more diverse 21st Century technology workforce, helping the at risk and under-served realize lucrative careers - and experience the satisfaction and pride of being extremely productive members of society. I cannot say enough about all the good CITF is doing. Please considering donating today, offering internships to graduates of the IT Ready program or volunteering as a speaker. And make sure to let others know about the great work Creating IT Futures is doing.

TechGirlz provides great opportunities for middle school girls to learn about technology and for high school students to volunteer! As a sixth grader, I was interested in tech, but my school did not have many opportunities for me. My mom found TechGirlz online, so I participated in many workshops as a middle school student. I learned about many cool technologies and was inspired to learn coding languages more in depth on my own. Because TechGirlz has been such a positive influence on my academic focus and goals for the future, I volunteer to help more young girls to explore tech. I've also found an amazing community of volunteers within Techgirlz!

I have had a wonderful experience with CompTIA Spark through Techgirlz. I recently became a part of the Teen Advisory Board (TAB) and have volunteered in the past as a TA for the Intro to JS workshop they host, and I am soon to be volunteering for a Python Programming course. As a woman in tech, I have always felt saddened by the lack of gender diversity in my high school computer courses. I had to introduce myself to coding in middle school as there was nothing to encourage young women to pursue it. This organization is the next step towards the brightest future. It is showered in endless new opportunities for all people involved, and it empowers girls to become future IT leaders through fun, free, and innovative ways. I am constantly introduced to new information every day through the TAB, and it helps me feel motivated to continue on this career path in times I need it the most. Thank you for reading!

I have had the pleasure of working with CompTIA Spark over the years in both iterations at Tech Girlz and Creating IT Futures. We have had the opportunity to collaborate on youth serving technology programs in the Piscataway (NJ) community. They have just been a wonderful partner throughout the years. They have provided support to us through curriculum, volunteers, and logistics to ensure that our youth here were well served and had a high quality experience during their partnered workshops. They have always consistently maintained an open communication and remains thoroughly responsive throughout our experiences working with them. There provided curriculum has always been well-grounded, youth-accessible, and strongly supported by the organization.

This is an organization that clearly cares about its mission in technology education, and working with their partners to ensure the highest rate of success in fulfilling that mission. I look forward to future opportunities to work with them on continuing mutually aligned initiatives in the future.

Techgirlz not only embraces it’s mission and serves to inspire young girls to explore possibilities in tech but in that process fosters a community where lifelong passions are developed. As a TA, a TAB member and a lead instructor, the intangible skills I learnt along the way is invaluable. Not only is the organization an enabler for future leaders but serves all minorities and gives voice to all types of personalities - especially the shy voices who normally would not try tech simply because there are less girls or no girls. I get to interact with a very professional, kind encouraging community, volunteering, serving while growing. Meeting other like minded students across the country, hosting events, monthly board meetings, notification of technology events around the area and even getting sponsored, setting goals, writing curriculum proposals to events are all some of the activities I’m involved. Techgirls is also agile, embracing virtual tools during the pandemic seemlessly ,and continues to provide the same opportunities as before.

Creating IT Futures is a great program/service. I found IT Futures on an ad in the sidebar of Indeed while job searching. I decided to take the chance, although it sounded to good to be true. A free, 2-month program that gives you the skills to be successful and also pays for the certifications? Worst that could happen is I don't get selected. I was contacted by Ryan Withem about a week after I applied. After a zoom call, getting to know about the program, clerifying some questions I had, getting to know my background and what I was looking to gain from this program, we ended the call. A few days later, I was told that I was accepted.

In Sept 16, 2019, I started the program in San Diego. It was a great program, I had a great instructor in Scott Ford, I learned alot, met some great people, and we all supported each other. 2 months later, in November of 2019, the class had sucessfully graduated all 18 of us. I want to thank Creating IT Futures, Ryan Withem, and Scott Ford. The program is really a great way to get people into the field and get their career started. I hope that CITF spreads to more places throughout the States, as thereare many people who could benefit greatly from what it offers and need that first step.

I started the IT ready program in October of 2019. It has without a doubt changed my life. Previous to my course with IT ready I was a server at a local restaurant here in Arizona. I was stuck at a job that did no challenge me and left me frustrated most nights. I decided to make a change and searched for opportunity until I came across IT ready. I was in a very unique position given the pandemic. I started working in the IT field a month before we were informed of the Wuhan Virus. Once the virus spread to the United States many people were unemployed and this was almost a guaranteed fact in the service industry. With my certification from IT ready I was able to obtain a IT job that allowed me to work from home, something that could not be done as a server. Not only is IT recession proof but I have just found out that it is Pandemic proof as well. I owe all of this to the IT ready program and great Teachers and staff!

This is such an amazing nonprofit! I am part of the Teen Advisory Board for TechGirlz and in middle chill went to the workshops. I learned so many important skills and met so many amazing women in STEM. It made me realize how women are just as capable to work in tech and made me want to make a difference. After I joined the Advisory Board I helped get more girls interested in STEM. I met so many teens who wanted to make a difference for these girls like I did. I had an amazing experience with TechGirlz and it’s mission makes a difference for these girls. I recommend sending your girls for workshops because they really helped me become the person I am today and it could get your girls interested into a field that really needs more females!

We are so lucky to have found TechGirlz. My daughter has been attending workshops and she comes out excited about what she learned. She can't stop talking about it and she is a very quite kid. As a parent, that makes me so happy. The volunteers are amazing and the level of content is top notch. I like the fact that it is not just coding, so many other subjects STEM related that she finds fascinating. Great job TechGirlz!

I have been volunteering with TechGirlz for over a year now and I’m so proud to be a part of this organization. As a girl aspiring to pursue a career in tech, I know the supply of obstacles for a woman in STEM is seemingly inexhaustible. But TechGirlz is, without a doubt, making an impact on hundreds and hundreds of young girls by creating the foundation and empowering girls to be confident in their abilities and passions.

Through TechGirlz, I have taught and assisted at workshops for middle school girls on topics such as C++ Programming, CyberSecurity, and Web Design. I’ve also had the privilege of being a part of TechGirlz’s Teen Advisory Board (TAB). TAB brings together passionate teens from across the country who work together to help plan initiatives for the organization.

If you are even remotely considering becoming a volunteer or bringing your daughter/younger sister/friend to a TechGirlz workshop, please do it! I am confident you will not regret it :)

One of our co-workers was looking for a way to get his daughter more involved in STEM outside of school. We checked out several alternatives, and TechGirlz seemed to have the best preparation and workshops.  With my company's help, we were able to run multiple workshops on site, and we've done several online. The workshops are easy to run and super fun. We have seen so many young women become so inspired!

Techgilz has helped me just do that by giving me the opportunity to share the little knowledge i had with these young middle school girls. The world need more organizations like Techgilz.

I came across TechGirlz while doing a general internet search for initiatives working on developing computing interest and skill set for high school students, especially female students. Research shows that this is the age when female students loose interest in STEM-related disciplines due to a lack of mentors and role models, stereotypes, and subtle societal indicators.
I sent in an email registering my interest to help. I got pleasantly surprised when I received an email response within 12 hours, thanking me for my interest and valuing my time and input. I jumped on a call with the Alicia, National Outreach Manager TechGirlz, and we immediately connected. She was my first real introduction to TechGirlz, and I was impressed with her passion and dedication towards the cause. We made plans for me to teach a workshop and write some blog posts for TechGirlz.
I taught my first workshop on Introduction to Encryption last week. The support that I received while preparing for the workshop has been fantastic! There were lesson plans, slides, recommendations, guidelines that helped me plan things effectively. I received periodic updates on registration and next steps. Also, TechGirlz found TAs for my session and connected me with them. In short, they made it as smooth as possible for me to be an effective teacher.
The workshop went great. We had a full session, lots of interest, and engaging exercises. We got great feedback too. I will certainly be volunteering my time with TechGirlz again.
I have worked with several nonprofits, and I can say that TechGirlz has been one of the best experiences I have come across, both for the volunteer teacher and, more importantly, the high school students.

Volunteering is typically something that gets my anxiety flowing. No matter how big or small the volunteer role is. So, I'd definitely never want to gather eager minds and not have a plan in order to provide the learning that the minds seek.

TechGirlz provides all of the tools and guidance necessary to feel confident and ready to volunteer. From being a teaching assistant and just providing help with the students as needed to being the instructor and/or coordinating the whole workshop, the TechGirlz team makes it easy to get involved.

It has been almost a year since my last review.

During the time that has passed, I have seen numerous students simply needing an opportunity to begin a career in IT transition to roles they could only hope for prior to applying to Creating IT Futures' IT-Ready program.

Of course, these students' success stories need employers willing to provide them with an opportunity and seeing many of them reconsider their recruiting practices and hiring requirements for entry-level roles within the industry is equally wonderful.

IT-Ready provides job seekers, employers, as well as community-based organizations with a solution to their IT needs and is quickly becoming a known-entity in the greater Chicago area because of its quick successes!

Whether it is supporting students in IT-Ready or those at colleges and universities with large percentages of underrepresented students, creating on-ramps for those who have never had opportunities to pursue upwardly-mobile and family-sustaining careers inspires all of us to do all we can to begin narrowing the skills gap within the industry.

I love working with Techgirlz! I've been working with this group off and on for about 3 years and I've enjoyed it so much. I've been able to TA a few classes, and I lead a couple of workshops every year. I've got my annual Cybersecurity session coming up in Oct and I always look forward to it. The curricula is very easy to read and interpret and leaves room for you to input your expertise, if you're familiar with a particular topic. With a little prep in advance you can confidently stand there and teach the session to this great group of middle school girls and answer their questions. I love that the sessions are not always technical as far as coding, but also cover areas where women are underrepresented and topics that are interesting. In the session I led on Audacity in RTP last month, I learned how few women music producers there are. Hopefully something in that session may have sparked someone to want to go into that arena and make a difference! I love that the girls get to work independently as well as together and present their work at the end of the session so the group can see what they've done and they can present something they're proud of. I will continue to work with this group as I can, as it's just as rewarding for us as it is for the young ladies.

Over 7 years later, I can't believe how much it has grown, to more than a half dozen cities and to include a population of Wounded Warriors thanks to the partnership with Cognizant. My colleagues who work with this program have the students in mind and are singularly focused on doing everything they can to facilitate our graduates receiving their first job in the IT field. I'm continually awed and impressed by what our staff and students together achieve.

This past summer I taught a STEM summer day camp targeted at 10-13 year old girls. I used two of the Tech in a Box lesson plans during this camp and cannot brag on these resources enough. The material was laid out perfectly, offering a number of resources and just enough guidance to direct our lessons while allowing the projects to bloom into what the girls would make of them. I absolutely loved using these resources to teach these lessons. Although I am an engineer and understood the science behind the lessons, I can see that they offer a lot of information for most anyone to teach many of the lessons.

I attended the graduation of IT-Ready's first class of students in Charlotte. More than 800 people applied for the 8-week tech training program. Creating IT Futures selected 175 for in-person interviews and testing. A lucky 26 were offered spots in the program, and with the strict attendance policy enforced for the class, 23 made it to graduation. Eighteen of the 23 had earned their CompTIA A+ certification by their graduation, and the other five were expected to pass their certification shortly.

Graduate James Imes said he knew if he could get into the class, his life would change. “I love to read, learn and teach. Sometimes I would drive 50 miles to class and arrive with E on my gas tank, because I know if I could get here, I would be alright. This class became my support system,” said Imes.

Graduate Barbara Stephens recognized IT-Ready as a “once in a lifetime opportunity that could catapult her to the next level.”

“On the first day of class, I saw the other students as competition. Now I see us as a family and a community,” said graduate William Tolliver. “We all made these bonds in class and we’ll carry them with us forever.”

My time in college wasn’t easy as I was one of the only girls in my major - Information Systems. Even now, I still see women facing challenges in the tech field, particularly when it comes to getting respect for their roles on a team if they aren’t known as “Director” or “Vice President.”

I wish that there had been a program to introduce me to STEM material at a younger age. That’s why I volunteer with TechGirlz now, to help create more opportunities for middle school girls in the technology world.

I got involved with TechGirlz a year ago, after attending the Women in Tech summit. I started out creating and sending out the monthly newsletter for TechGirls programs in the Triangle area. Eventually, I volunteered as a teaching assistant before then taught my own workshop.

While teaching workshops, I have been pleasantly surprised by how enthusiastic the girls who attend the programs are. I wish that other people knew how valuable the programs offered by TechGirlz are and that it provides lots of opportunities to help young girls get familiar and comfortable with technology.

The classes are put together with enough information that with a bit of prep you can stand in front of a room and be enough of an expert to get the girls interested. I also like that while the focus is on the technical, we incorporate sharing so they get up and speak about what they have done - encouraging girls to communicate and articulate what they have done is just as important as doing it. At the end of a session when they have all produced something we celebrate them all and they leave talking about their next class!

OMG Techgirlz has made all the difference in more daughter's life. Without it, she'd have no idea about code or tech and how to do it. She's taken workshops in HTML/CSS, JavaScript, Robotics, Python, Wordpress, Raspberry Pi and so much more. It's been world-opening. There's another thing, which is that Techgirlz always feels like it's cutting edge. They got me a paid internship and paid for my training and certs for my Network +, Security + and Server +. I now have a great career in IT working with a local government and constantly going up. I found TechGirlz in 2015, and have not stopped helping since! From volunteering to creating or updating curriculum, TAing at workshops, or attending Outreach events, it has been so rewarding being a part of TechGirlz. The smiles and excitement seen in the girls' eyes, while they are exploring technology, makes you feel happy to be a part of something so powerful. These middle school girls want to learn more about the world of technology and TechGirlz is helping to make that possible through the various, free TechShopz they host. Whether you have a lot or a little knowledge about a specific tech topic presented, there is always some way you could help out! If you love to learn new technologies, like I do, TAing at a workshop allows you to learn and help others learn something new and exciting. Programming, designing, coding.. there is something for everyone!

TechGirlz is a great organization with a mission of closing the gender gap in technology careers. They have an impressive catalog of workshops that cover a wide range of technology topics and are continually adding more. One thing I really like is that they cover more than programming topics. There is more to technology than coding and TechGirz seems to get that. They expand into topics such as robotics, pod/video casting, 3-D modeling, DNA analysis, cartography, molecular biology/chemistry, computer networking, virtual reality, genetics and cybersecurity. The workshops feature lots on hands-on activities where the girls get to actually do something or make something. This is how you get kids excited about technology.

I ran a club in my high school which immersed young, middle school girls into the field of computer science. i had the pleasure of working with TechGirlz to create a workshop for the girls at my middle school using LEGO Mindstorm robots. I also helped design an app with another friend for TechGirlz so young girls could feel more comfortable using a period app. Overall, the company is really promoting STEM opportunities, especially computer science, for young girls. We need to close that gender gap and by serving with this organization not only do I learn new skills myself, but I also fight for equality.

What drew me to TechGirlz was their focus on introducing girls to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). I started volunteering with TechGirlz about a year and a half ago. I volunteered for several Saturday workshops and helped with the Summer Robotics Camp program. The TechGirlz team is well organized, friendly and very motivated. The instructors for the Workshops are professionals and well versed in the related topics. The topics are varied, interesting, timely and fun to learn about.

One of my observations was the interaction between the volunteers and the girls at the workshops. The volunteers are engaged and really connect with the girls that attend. Thought the workshops you see a lot of one to one interaction between the volunteers and the girls. Sometime the volunteer is providing additional details on the specific topic or encouraging the girls to experiment and build on what they just learned. I enjoy working with the volunteers also.

The girls come out and are excited and eager to learn and share their experiences. Sometimes they have never heard of the topic presented and sometimes they have had some exposure to the material. The girls are from all types of background. I really enjoy seeing the “light” come on when the girls start to understand the material.

We need more people that can think and solve problems. TechGirlz focus on middle school girls helps them get exposed to the STEM fields at a crucial time in their development. TechGirlz not only provides workshops but helps show the girls that they can get Technology just like everyone else. TechGirlz creates an environment where the girls feel comfortable with Technology and lets them know they are not alone and that they can be successful at it and have fun doing it.

I've had the pleasure of working with dozens of graduates of this nonprofit's signature IT-Ready tech career training program, and lives literally are being changed for the better because of it. Folks who have been chronically under- or unemployed for years, through no fault of their own, are learning IT skills that allow them to secure positions that pay family-sustaining wages and offer the potential for advancement.

I attended the most recent IT-Ready Minneapolis / St. Paul graduation (Edina class, Summer 2017), hosted by Creating IT Futures. By the time of graduation, 5 out of the 15 students had already passed their CompTIA A+ exam. The remaining students were set to test over the following week.

Graduate and so-called "computer nerd" and gamer Hunter Geidl said the program "gave me a chance to expand on that interest and gain knowledge through everyone involved with the program. It brought us all here to learn together, grow together, and connect together.”

Graduate Tounang Her echoed Geidl’s sentiments when he said, "I fed off the enthusiasm, hunger to learn, and determination to finish this program from my classmates. They helped create a positive environment.”

Daniel Heu said to his fellow graduates, “This gives us a sense of validation. We all had the capabilities to finish this program. I believe that everyone here is going to be the next great CompTIA A+ certified technician.”

This summer, SLO County Office of Education, SLO Partners and Creating IT Futures embarked on a new career training and apprenticeship program to grow the tech workforce in the greater San Luis Obispo area of California.

With hundreds of applicants for 50 spots in the program, the three partners first launched two classes of Creating IT Futures’ IT-Ready career program. Each class trained toward CompTIA A+ certification. Plus, these two classes were underwritten by the San Luis Obispo County Office of Education, so that each student received a stipend of $70 a day – a first for any IT-Ready program. The SLO County Office of Education was awarded funding through the California Apprenticeship Initiative.

After eight weeks of training, the first cohort graduated in September. Seventy percent of the students moved forward into the paid apprenticeship part of the program, with about half learning IT networking and security and the other half learning about software testing for six weeks. The apprentices then will begin a year of salaried, on-the-job training with local employers. The other 30 percent of the students were introduced to local employers for immediate job openings.

During the graduation, Amy Kardel, president and co-founder of Clever Ducks, a managed IT services provider based in San Luis Obispo, and chair of CompTIA, told the students, “If there’s a will, there’s a way. This industry allows you to learn every day. Welcome to our tech community.”

Graduate Madeline Gorge, who’s moving onto the networking and security apprenticeship track, remarked, “This class could have become a competitive environment, but instead we helped each other get better.”

Graduate Elissa Murray, who’s moving along to the same track as Gorge, echoed her sentiments, “We all pitched in to make us successful.”

Several students remarked on how inspiring and dedicated their teachers were. “I’ve had a blast. I didn’t realize how fun education can be,” said graduate and future apprentice Kevin Tran.

Graduate Justin Rucker summed up the program as “this is like the golden ticket.”

I met Vanessa Dalkha last year in IT-Ready, when she looked to return to the workforce as her daughter approached the end of 4th grade. After her IT-Ready graduation and getting her CompTIA A+ certification, she gained a job as an IT specialist with Hennepin County, the county government for Minneapolis. She tole me, “IT-Ready gave me the knowledge and confidence I needed to start a career that I hope will last for many years to come.”

One of the students I worked with at Creating IT Futures recently told me her story of training with IT-Ready. Rashmi Bhattarai looked online for affordable IT programs where she could get that experience, and landed on IT-Ready, a free eight-week program that helps people get started in IT, earn entry-level technology certifications and find jobs right away.

“I felt like it was too good to be true,” she said. “I was really skeptical about having a job at the end of an eight-week course, and I was a little bit skeptical of the program. Eight weeks to learn CompTIA A+ material and two exams you have to pass? I don’t think so!”

Rashmi filled out an application, got an acceptance letter in the mail and was suddenly immersed in technology. She was studying with 25 other students, who quickly grew into a supportive group.

“IT-Ready created such a positive environment for the students to come in and learn and succeed that we wanted to help each other, no matter what level we were in,” she said.

Graduating from IT-Ready and passing the CompTIA A+ exam put Rashmi exactly where she wanted to be. “Now I have a paper that says I’m an IT technician, and now I can put this on my resume and I can move forward,” she said.

I had the honor to attend a graduation in MN for Creating IT Futures. CITF helped this class graduate passing various IT certification exams and jump start their career in tech. This class varied from those who had possibly taken the wrong career path to those simply struggling to find work and get out of their own predicament. At graduation, the class was emotional to have made it to graduation and grateful for the staff and their classmates that pushed them along the way. It was inspiring to hear about these 'students' hardships and struggles and how CITF, this program that sounded 'to good to be true', has given them hope and encouragement. I left encouraged not only by the students but also by the CITF staff that had worked tirelessly to help these students pass tests, find jobs and succeed in this demanding field all while creating an optimistic and nurturing atmosphere.

I've been working some warehouse position with what seemed like a road to no where. When I first heard about this IT-Ready Program by the Creating IT Futures Foundation I knew that this was something that I needed to pursue. I have been surrounded by individuals who they themselves are skilled with computer repair and troubleshooting, but they never shared it with me. It wasn't I started to talk with my brother in law that the Idea of a career in the IT industry soon sprouted in my mind. This was an industry that is only going to increase and a workforce that will need fresh minds and those with a willing attitude. The Program was certainly difficult, but the best things in life are not accomplished nor received without a bit of effort put forth. Although I currently do not hold an IT job, completing the program has enabled me to further my reach in jobs that i wasn't qualified for a year ago. My Story:

I was looking for anything IT related I possibly could because I knew I was good with computers but did not have the degree to prove it nor could I afford to put the money down on certifications. Every job I applied for I was told to get more experience and try back later. So when I was job searching I stumbled upon this too good to be true program called IT Ready Apprenticeship. At this point I decided it was well worth giving it a go so I applied only half expecting to get it but really hoping it was exactly what it sounded like. I received a call asking me to come in and take a quick test to evaluate some basic high school skills and then do some interviewing with representatives of the program. I explained my situation - no college degree/ no money/ lots of hands on computer skills but no experience, and how hard it was to find a job.

I went through all of the basic testing and evaluating and was lucky enough to be able to spend my time speaking with each member that was running the program throughout the process. At this point I was excited to see what I could do with the program and very invested in entering. I kept asking them what the catch was but even to this day not a one has surfaced.

I will never forget that first day where I began getting to know so many genuinely good classmates, mentors, and friends and for 8 weeks I was guided into what I can now happily refer to as my IT Career.

Specifically, what I liked about the program:

-I think the structure of the program itself was very well done -- there were never days where we had nothing to do or things felt stretched. I was always being jammed with new information despite my technical background.

-Several get-to-know my classmates exercises was a phenomenal idea; rather that just diving into things. It made me much more comfortable and, I am sure I was not the only one, but many of us were able to work together outside of the program as well to answer questions and help one another network.

-I also think that the interviewing skills we developed have been immensely helpful. I walk into interviews now and feel like a veteran and make it more of a conversation than I ever did before.

-The additional certifications after the program are a godsend. Not only have I picked up my Network+, Security+, and Server+ through vouchers, I was given extensive training materials that were invaluable to my success.

IT Ready for Me

IT Ready has given me the confidence in my abilities and the desire to learn more and acquire more skills in every job I have obtained since. It totally changed my attitude -- I used to try and fix software and hardware with what I know and Google.com -- now I go through it methodically. Start basic and get more complicated; this approach has saved me countless times where coworkers have spent hours I have spent minutes. The interviewing skills are amazing and I feel confident before every interview because now I know what they look for. The additional certifications provided by the program have easily handed me my most recent job at Carle Hospital in Urbana Illinois, I know I would never have it without them and the vouchers. I would have been too afraid to spend the money to take each test. Above all IT Ready gave me a direction, I knew I wanted to do technical support, but now I have a career and I now know how to advance that career. I spent $80,000 on college and learned more from IT Ready than I did from college. This program has most definitely changed my life.

Creating IT Futures Foundation Has been an incredible partner of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis. They have assisted us in creating and then launching a new world class IT program at our clubs. This not only exposes our club kids to IT but trains them for careers in the IT Field. Many of our kids are at risk and often do not have access to technology at home or in school. Because of Creating IT Futures Foundation, they will not only have access to the equipment, they now have competent instructors and a career waiting for them upon graduation.

After reading an article about the Creating IT Futures Foundation's IT Ready training program, I picked up the phone and placed a call. I was working on creating an IT training program for the kids at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Memphis. The Foundation jumped in to help us design and implement our program, that was over a year ago. We are now kicking off our first class and the Foundation is still with us, providing their expertise and guidance. Our IT training program for the kids of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Memphis would not exist today if not for the support of the Creating IT Futures Foundation!

The Foundation staff are truly dedicated to helping people further their career and/or helping people train for a new career. They go the extra mile to support them during training, including advice on resume writing and interview techniques, and they celebrate their students' successful completion of training. The staff cares about the people in their training programs.

The IT Ready program is a great way for adults to enter the IT field in a relatively short time. The success of our graduates, in terms of securing jobs with good pay and good career advancement potential, is among the very best of workforce development programs in the country. Employers get well trained, motivated employees; they keep coming back for more grads. It's a win/win/win, for individuals, companies and communities.

I was lucky enough to be chosen for this program after years of self employment. I have no degree and not very useful work experience in recent years. They not only had excellent support and curriculum, but they had very useful professional development sessions that helped prepare me to get back into a professional setting. At the end, they vouched for me and I got a job the day I graduated. I couldn't be happier with what they helped me achieve and what they did for me.
