I will never forget the text I received from Susan Kayne, Founder of Unbridled Sanctuary, on October 23, 2023. There was a mule in a kill pen that needed to be rescued and he needed a name. What Susan did not know at the time was my Uncle Arnold had died that day. I told Susan I would think about her offer and get back to her. I was already a sponsor for several of the horses rescued and living at Unbridled and was not sure about a mule. I spoke to my sister and my cousin and we decided that since my Uncle Arnold could be as stubborn as a mule at times we would sponsor this mule and call him Arnie. My Uncle would be amused but also honored as we were in our final decision. It has been almost a year now since that text and a lot has happened. Arnie has a rock star like following with over 5000 friends and over 2000 followers on his own Facebook page. His life at Unbridled Sanctuary is being chronicled almost daily with pictures and or videos for all to see. He has his own YouTube channel as well. I am now known as M.O.M. (Mother of Mule) as I keep his FB current with Arnie’s adventures. His life would have ended last year as he was starved, showed signs of physical abuse, and his back hooves were so damaged he had great difficulty in walking. Unbridled Sanctuary stepped in and rescued this poor mule. Through tremendous love and comfort care Arnie has rebounded and is thriving. One note to mention is Arnie showed signs of abuse so badly he was afraid to eat when people were around. Susan Kayne and all the volunteers at Unbridled Sanctuary have patiently provided for Arnie’s needs and he makes regular progress as seen on his Facebook. I have seen first hand what my contributions and sponsorships have been able to provide for the horses, donkeys and mules. Yes! Two more white Molly mules have been saved making a total of three mules. I thoroughly researched Unbridled Sanctuary as so many donations to animal rescues go toward administrative salaries instead of the animals they claim to be saving. I can 100% say my monies go to the equine and their care. Susan Kayne has an open book policy and that includes the financials which I reviewed. There is tremendous community involvement and educational programs for children and adults. One of my favorites are the Open Houses and Read to the Rescues. My grandchildren absolutely love picking out books and then reading them to the horses, donkeys and of course Arnie the Mule. I can and will continue to support Unbridled Sanctuary and can assure anyone else they can and will make a difference in the life of any of the rescued equine with their donations.
Hi guys ny name is Joe Elsbree, This place is incredible. The second chance at life some of these horses have received over the years. My aunt and uncle have helped me through some of the hardest times of my life when I was younger. They have me something to do, something to appreciate and a feel of self satisfaction at the end of the day. I was there when a lot of this was just really starting to get big and we had spent many hours together putting together stalls and pastures for the horses to be in. Days spent breeding and sharing stories. I learned to be a responsible adult through my years working with the horses. They gave me peace and are so therapeutic. I don't even think my aunt and uncle truly realize the impact they had on changing me for the better and giving me the chance to be a part of a family I never really had. I'm grateful to know and have met such wonderful and amazing people. I love you guys. Keep up the good work!!!
Unbridled Sanctuary has brought me peace. Good vibes Susan gives off. Thank you so very much. She has a great team of dedicated horse lovers that volunteer. I am going through Cancer Treatment currently, I love reading and commenting about the horses during treatments. It brings me joy to see how well they are taken care of and loved. The morning walk throughs are wonderful too. I love them.
I met Beauty at Unbridled Sanctuary while I was being treated for a life threatening illness. She looked sad and lonely the first few times I saw her and I could relate the life’s uncertainties between the two of us.
I did not know Beauty’s full story on her rescue until later that she had been saved from the horrors of the slaughter pipeline in January of 2021. She was in very bad shape at the time of her rescue. She was
emaciated, weak and scared just like I was. I continue to visit her every time I come to Unbridled and we eventually bonded and she will come over to me to be petted.
I am so grateful to Unbridled Sanctuary for letting the public enjoy the horses, donkeys and mules but especially Beauty. I looked at Beauty as a survivor and knew I could be too.
I firmly believe in all that Unbridled Sanctuary does for the rescued equine. The donations that are made go directly to the love and comfort care of all and Beauty is a fine example of that. She flourishes.
I am also grateful to Unbridled for opening their doors to the public and letting me heal alongside of Beauty and the volunteers have been just as wonderful to me.
I have seen first hand what the donations do and I can say without hesitation that my donations have and will continue to make a wonderful difference in the equine lives saved by Unbridled Sanctuary.

I have had the pleasure of knowing about Unbridled for two years after attending two of their Love & Joy celebrations. I have witnessed first hand the care that goes toward all the animals at the sanctuary and was super impressed with all the love the volunteers have for each and every horse. Of course there are two donkeys and a mule that have also been rescued from the slaughter pipeline which are loved just as much.
It is a pleasure to know that the monies donated are going toward the animals and is obvious when you see how food, medical care, housing and equipment is kept available for the animals at all times. A special need comes up and it is addressed.
Know your donations are well spent on the horses, two donkeys and a mule. All saved because this foundation truly does rescue and recover these animals so they may spend the rest of their natural lives being loved and cared for.
As a board member of Unbridled Sanctuary, and husband of the founder, I’ve witnessed firsthand Susan’s unwavering dedication over the past 20 years. She has poured her heart and soul into saving countless horses, ensuring transparency and integrity in every decision. I couldn’t be prouder of her tireless work and the impact she’s made for these beautiful beings. Unbridled is truly a place of compassion and hope. – Andrew Elsbree, CJF
Unbridled has gone thru some changes since my last review in 2019, all of them GOOD! The excellent work for the health and emotional welfare of equines remains, but the brand changed to include ALL equines, not just Thoroughbreds. The sanctuary now houses and cares for some beautiful mules, and the most animated snow donkeys you'll ever have the pleasure of meeting. One cannot visit the stable without leaving with a smile on your face and a skip in your steps! These equines are all rescued from the most deplorable depths of hell that some 'humans' have left them in, yet under the love and guidance of the Unbridled umbrella, they flourish back to health and happiness. Once under the care of Unbridled, they may be adopted, but they are ALWAYS welcomed back if their situation turns in need - for the whole of their lives. That's the way it should be for all equines. Any donations you send go directly to the lives they save, 100%. If you love equines - Get involved. See what it's all about for yourself. You won't be sorry - and you may even make some new 4 legged friends!

I'm new to the horse rescue movement, but privately I have wished to be the owner of a race horse since my teen age years. In those days my brother and I would often accompany our father on his 2nd job as a paddock guard at Saratoga Raceway. We'd watch the races from outside the fence, mingle with the children of the horsemen and women and generally have a good time. Eventually, we found jobs as hot walkers, cooling out Standardbreds after they'd raced. Typically, we'd walk and water blanketed horses for about an hour after their post race bath. During these walks, we'd learn a little about horses and their care, generally inculcate ourselves (albeit in a very minor way) into the racing scene and end up with a buck or two to spend in the track restaurant when we were done. It was great fun!
Ever since Saratoga I've wanted to own a race horse. But, life has had its contradictory demands and I never did become a horse owner. Fast forward to age of 77. My kids (now adults) encouraged me to join Facebook (FB)--which I did very reluctantly. Of course, on FB one runs across all kinds of people, places and things. But, in my FB scrolling I ran across Susan Kayne at Unbridled Sanctuary (US) in Greenville, NY. Susan had started US as a rescue operation for thoroughbreds, but has since expanded her mission to all equines. What struck me most about Unbridled was their "ALL IN!" commitment to horses who are literally at the end of their rope--horses judged to be beyond their productive years and placed by their owners into the "slaughter pipeline" to reap the last vestige of their worth--their very flesh and bones! Fortunately, Susan Kayne not only "Walks the walk!" of an equine sanctuary which she does with much love, care and just plain hard physical labor. But, she's also very effective at "Talking the talk!"--an equally important quality needed to garner the much needed support of volunteers and financial contributors to effect the care of more than 60 equines! Following Susan on Facebook has led me to an important adjustment to my lifelong dream. Instead of actually owning a race horse, I can contribute monthly as a member of the 21 Club. In this way I contribute to the complete compassionate care of equines for the rest of their natural lives. it's so much better than mere ownership! Consequently, I can whole heartedly commend, Susan Kayne, Andrew Elsbree and all those that volunteer their time and/or give financial support to this most worthy cause.
I was researching animal rescues and sanctuaries to support while rewriting my trust. I had heard about unbridled sanctuary so I did my homework and was so impressed that I not only included them after I die, I am supporting their amazing work on a regular basis through the 21 club and whenever they need funds to rescue another horse, donkey, mule or unexpected medical costs. Susan and Andrew give selflessly to all the animals in their care. I am so thankful for unbridled and all the work they do.

The team at Unbridled Sanctuary are amazing. Watching what they go through to save a horse or mule, the condition they come too them in, is so heartbreaking. I love to see how healthy and happy they are as they are showered with the love and care of these amazing people.
Susan tells us what horses are in need of what. Who needs rescuing. She also shows us the bills from the feed store, and the vet. Her hubby does a lot of shoeing and hoof trims. Everything she does is above board. She hides nothing. If someone got sick and had to be put down, Susan is with that horse and then tells us what happened. You simply don’t have to worry about your funds being misused.
Watching how many horses come in starved and then watching all the love and care they receive is outstanding. To give a second chance to abused and horses thrown out to slaughter is horrible. Then saved and loved and living in peace is so special. So much love given to all.
Unbridled Thoroughbred Foundation is a blessing to all horses that they have saved from slaughter. The work they put into saving, then caring for these horses is amazing. From saving the horses, to transporting the horses and then the medical care. To see the starving, neglected horses thrive when they are rescued is amazing.
As a lifelong horsewoman, I have known the founder of Unbridled, also a lifelong horsewoman, for several decades. She and her spouse have created something beautiful, unique and desperately needed by horses (mostly TBs) who find themselves abandoned by their humans and on their last stop in the slaughter pipeline. I have been a donor and supporter of Unbridled for several years. I have witnessed the unwavering commitment, dedication, and exhausting work of Susan and Andrew as they continue to rescue and care for as many horses as they can, provide all medical attention needed for them, and bring them home to their beautiful large sanctuary farm in eastern NY, which they continue to improve and expand. There the horses are promised, and do receive, the best of care and a life of peace, facilitated by Unbridled, the staff, volunteers and donors.
I have followed Unbridled Thoroughbred Foundation for a few years. I've yet to visit in person but I watch all of the videos and see all of the photos on Facebook. I donate to them regularly. They have saved countless horse's lives from slaughter. Susan Kayne performs miracles with these beautiful thoroughbreds.. They have a safe forever home to spend the rest of their lives happy and free!
Unbridled is unique in that its primary function; the rescue of horses in need, is like a drop of water on a still lake. The horse arrives and brings with her a story. That story ripples and joins the stories of all the Horses of Unbridled so the motion and energy continue outward. Then people come to meet the horses and learn their individual stories through; field trips, Read to the Rescues, art and music activities, the academics of horse care, and an ever evolving offering of time with the horses.
Then these gentle ripples lap on the shores of our communities; our internet friends, local friends, friends through the library programs. These friends have never been on site, yet they continue to share the stories and join our family. Please take some time to explore all that the Horses of Unbridled have to offer.
Unbridled is one of the few nonprofits I’ve consistently supported over the years. It is a transformative place of refuge for horses that have been abandoned, neglected or abused. I have visited four times and every time I have been impressed by the care the horses receive and by Susan and the rest of the team’s dedication to their welfare. It truly is a special place.
My first steps into Unbridled felt as though I were walking into an alternate reality. To see humans set aside aches and pains, illnesses and daily stress. It's all put to the side for the beautiful horses. Turn outs, feedings and soft voices, horses nickering at their gentle handlers. As a volunteer you learn each horses quirks, and likes/dislikes. My daughter's have helped exercise several horses, between free lunging and light riding. To watch many hands pull together and make light work of it... it's amazing. Thank you to all who volunteer, and for all donations. Lives of Equine and Human alike, they're all being changed for the better.
Two years ago I discovered Unbridled Foundation and began volunteering several days a week.
This experience has been about healing. The horses at Unbridled have horrific stories too painful to mention.
Everyone of our 60 horses, donkeys, and mules are loved, and cared for beautifully by Susan Kayne. She had made it her life’s work to save these horses in need. Through her guidance the volunteers love these sweet souls back from their pain. Everything that is done at Unbridled is done for the horses and their healing. As volunteers, we have the honor of caring for each one. The stalls are clean, soft, and warm. Water, hay, and grain, abundant. We personally spend many an hour in their stalls, as they gain strength grooming and reassuring them that they are now safe.
The transformation of these horses is nothing less than miraclous. To see the sadness in their eyes, oh the sadness, is rough for all of us that love them. But the transformation from that to seeing them joyously galloping the fields, kicking up their heels in pure joy is pure magic! To know that we were a part of the healing of these creatures, that we helped them become beautiful, powerful, healthy and happy is beyond words. I am so grateful to be able to have this in my life. I am humbled and my heart soars.
I had the great luck of growing up around horses in the early years of my life, but it's been more than 40 years in urban areas where contact between these beautiful creatures and people will often center around the racing industry. Because of my experience with thoroughbreds and my eye for their confirmation, I would go to the track, attend the pre-race parade, and eyeball some overlooked winners. Well, one time I did that, was cheering my longshot as she went strode for the lead after the stretch turn. YAYYYYYYYY turned to NNNOOOOOOO, as she fell with a broken leg. Knowing she would be put down in minutes because she had,in part, raced to entertain and enrich me, I swore off racing and haven't been to a track in over 30 years.
When I discovered Unbridled Thoroughbred Foundation many years later, I very quickly identified with their mission and joined their cause. I've watched them grow from a sanctuary to an influential advocate participating in the education of young children and high levels of state and national government, all the while being able to show the fruits of their labor in a herd taken from the literal hell of the slaughter pipeline to a kind, safe, natural recovery. The volunteers' and donors' dedication is second to none!! Please help them to continue being an effective, valuable asset for these beautiful, deserving animals!
I have followed and donated to Unbridled for several years now. I have not yet visited the farm where the horses reside, but I've seen the magic they perform through online posts and videos. They give these poor souls a forever home to live out the rest of their lives happy and free. The work they do by rescuing as many horse as they can from the slaughterhouses warms my heart.❤
Unbridled Thorougjbred Foundation is more than mere horse and human. It is a place to learn and grow with the most open and friendly humans and the precious horses, donkeys, and mule will reveal their most heart wrenching stories and teach you about forgiveness and resilience. I cannot say enough about this organization and all the events and educational experiences they provide Follow them and surely put them on your list of places to visit.
Unbridled has saved hundreds of horses from slaughter!!! Here they live safe, loved, and healthy lives. They are cared for and loved by dozens of volunteers; old, young, men, women. The stables are maintained with safe, healthy, and immaculate care The founder and ceo not only maintains the business and premises, but she works as a stable hand and teacher, checking every horse first thing in the morning and last thing at night.,
Did I say Unbridled saves horses from slaughter and gives them safe, loved and healthy lives?
This place, this wonderful place, where equines can live without fear, and enjoy a life of love, dignity, and respect, thanks to the founder, Susan Kayne, who works tirelessly too promote, and educate everyone she can of the plight of horses and equines who have done all that is asked of them only too be starved and sent too auction and eventually a horrible death.. Susan Kayne advocates for these animals, she writes , letters to news papers, posts on social media, goes to to the Governor office, fights to get bills past for their safety, even goes to Congress! Her dedication is unshakable!! We have a horse that is boarded with us that Unbridled saved from sure death, his name is "Steve's Adventures" and his forever person Kelly Evans who loves him dearly now lives a very happy life thanks too the efforts Of Unbridled Thoroughbred Foundation, & Susan Kayne whos goal is to find every horse a safe and loving home!
I was in the racing industry for many years, I've seen what this "sport" does to horses, uses them up and throws them away. If it weren't for Susan and Unbridled, so many lives would have died a horrific, violent and brutal death. Unbridled not only saves these horses from slaughter, but gives them back their dignity. Unbridled provides a caring, nurturing and dignified sanctuary for horses who were at the end of their rope. It brings hope back into their eyes and spirit to their bodies and minds.
Susan Kayne does a wonderful job as the Director of Unbridled Thoroughbred Foundation. Unbridled provides sanctuary for horses that have run out of options including those horses who find themselves dumped into the slaughter pipeline. Susan relies on the help of many volunteers and actually has a read to the rescues program which encourages reading literacy with children. Her care of the horses, donkeys and mules under her care is exemplary. She deserves all the recognition and the highest rating from Great Nonprofits. Thank you!

Susan Kayne of Unbridled Thoroughbred Foundation does a remarkable job by opening up her barn doors to the unwanted Broodmares that are found in kill pens once their productive days are over. I have known Susan for quite a few years and her devotion to these horses is truly remarkable. The horses she rescues are exploited on the track and then exploited in the breeding shed. Their options are limited. There aren’t many individuals that are willing to take on the responsibility of older horses and provide for them. Susan is truly remarkable and worthy of our support. After being involved with horses for almost 6 decades, I highly recommend her and her rescue and would trust her with my own horse.
Unbridled houses over 50 rescued horses. They are loved and well cared for under the supervision of Susan Kayne. Numerous volunteers come every day to feed, groom and care for them. Unbridled thoroughbred is a safe haven for those thoroughbreds that have made their purse and shipped down the slaughter pipeline. Incredibly sad they have to be starved and frightened to death before being found and saved by Susan’s sanctuary. The daily cost is astronomical and they must rely on the generous donations of donors who share a passion for saving equine’s lives.
I've been a volunteer at Unbridled for more than two years. When I started there in July 2021 they had 10 acres, 11 stalls and 22 horses. Now we have 20+ acres, 51 stalls, 56 horses, 2 donkeys and 1 mule. Unbridled had grown not only in size but also in scope. From spring through fall Unbridled hosts "Read to the Rescues" on Saturdays. The horses are a great audience for children who might not otherwise not enjoy reading. Schools can also schedule visits where students learn basic information about horse vision, communication and behavior. Much of the work is done by a dedicated crew of volunteers along with the founder who is there daily for 12-16 hours per day. Her enthusiasm is contagious and it keeps the barn going.

I have been a volunteer with Unbridled since July 2021. I have seen horses arrive looking worn out and watched as they have recovered and shown their personalities. I knew that they were instinctually herd animals but have been amazed to see how they develop bonds with each other. AS an organization there is a dedication to education both for students visitors and the volunteer staff. If you want to learn; just ask a question.
20-years ago, my wife Susan Kayne founded Unbridled Thoroughbred Foundation. In the time since, she has saved countless horses, and worked tirelessly to advocate, educate, and protect equine on the frontlines — from the trenches of auctions and slaughter yards, to the halls of Congress. Her every breath is wholeheartedly dedicated to inspiring a new ethical perspective towards the equine being as a fellow sentient being with whom we are privileged to partner, and to share this beautiful life giving planet. Unbridled has brought together an amazingly wonderful community of changemakers to create a kinder world for our four-legged equine friends.
I met founder Susan Kayne via a text message one morning at about 5:00 AM. An in danger TB mare in a kill pen was misidentified as my horse, my horse being a horse bred by Susan. Susan contacted me to see if this was, indeed, my horse. I replied no, my horse was safe in her stall at the stable and since I was going to see her for an appointment she had, I sent a photo. After this encounter, I decided to look into Unbridled to learn more about their charter of saving at risk thoroughbred mares. Soon after I became an ongoing supporter. I appreciate and admire not only the dedication to the actual rescue of the horses, but also the superb individualized ongoing care that each horse receives. The care is top notch and the horses also receive love and appreciation for just being horses.
I became aware of Unbridled Thoroughbred Foundation several years ago. They have taken so many beautiful souls out of the dreaded slaughter pipeline and provided them with love and care. I am most impressed by their adoption policy; they follow the horse after adoption and can take the horse back if needed. A very accountable organization.
It just started with one. Susan Kayne, one voice, one action, saving the lives of many horses who gave their all to the humans who asked of them.
Unbridled Throughbred Foundation not only rescues thoroughbreds bound for slaughter, this fine organization brings children together with horses in learning with their reading and remote classroom initiative! Susan Kayne and her husband along with countless volunteers bring new life and hope to the horses rescued through Unbridled.
Perhaps there can be a day where are each horse brought into the world will have a safety net for retirement.
In the meanwhile, education and programs to continue the support of life for these magnificent animals needs to be a priority.
Unbridled is a lifeline for this endeavor.
I am a friend and supporter for this worthwhile cause.
Unbridled is an exceptional organization where horses are loved and valued. Their unique personalities are allowed to blossom. Susan Kayne sets the tone and provides leadership that keeps Unbridled focused on its mission. I feel very lucky to be a volunteer. Every week I look forward to helping out in a small way and I get so much back in return. Just to be with the horses makes me happy. Unbridled is truly a great nonprofit!
Horses have been in my life for many years! My aunt and uncle had horses that I could enjoy and a family friend had a horse who I could ride on a regular basis!!! I took the school bus to their home and Candy and I spent many happy times riding across fields and roads!
Having access to the herd of Unbridled is a dream come true! Even the smell of the stable brings a smile to my face and delightful memories race through my mind! Having a purpose outside of my home on a day to day basis is also invigorating! Although I'm unable muck out stalls I'm thrilled to be able to assist with administrative and fundraising projects! Even the freezing and snowy weather hasn't kept me from the returning to the joy of being with the horses! I know that as I spend more time visiting, talking and touching these sentient beings they will look forward to seeing me with love and joy as well!
We discovered Unbridled Thoroughbred Foundation by attending a Saturday Open House to learn about the Read to Horses program firsthand. Observing a child intently reading a book to a horse that seems to hang on every word was priceless. We loved everything they stand for.
Unbridled is an incredible organization on every level. It’s multi-faceted …. a dedicated equine rescue that saves thoroughbreds from the slaughter pipeline, an advocate for animal rights legislation, and a champion for literacy education for their community. We highly recommend attending an Open House to experience the wonder of Unbridled yourself.
Unbridled Thoroughbred is an amazing horse sanctuary that saves the lives of horses that have served a purpose for the previous owner and since they have no more use for the horse they send it off to slaughter.
Susan is an active advocate for horses and education and introduces horses to underprivileged children of all ages and educates them on horse care.
I am so thrilled and blessed for the opportunity to spend time with a beautiful mare rescued by Unbridled Thoroughbred. Smokintowin , LuLu , was adopted by my sister. She went from a place of neglect to Unbridled and now lives a life full of love, treats, hugs and best of all usefulness She is definitely living her best life and has given me , at the age of 62, an unforeseen opportunity to ride and even re enter the horse show arena !
Wonderful organization. They provide sanctuary to horses who are cast aside for slaughter after careers in the racing industry rather than being allowed the dignity of retirement. Aside from serving their mission of saving lives, there are so many opportunities to learn and interact with the horses. From public programs to weekly open days featuring reading to the horses all the way up to volunteering at the barn, there are so many opportunities for enrichment for the horses and their human visitors. This is a place filled with kind-0hearted people working their behinds off to care for the herd. Look them up on Eventbrite if you want to visit.
I have been a volunteer with Unbridled now for over 1 year and it has been the most rewarding experience. Susan devotes every waking minute of her day to advocate for horses, tirelessly tending to all the horses needs and comforts..What I love about Unbridled also is that they educate the public and offer open days to come and meet the horses which is incredibly special.
Unbridled is an inspiration regarding making a necessary change in the industry, educating the public, and offering a sanctuary that is second to none for horses in need...Their transparency in everything that they do is rare and is so greatly appreciated...They are the voice of so many in need that go sight unseen...They tell the story and are a leading front in the change that is so desperately needed❤ Unbridled truly is love in action.
Susan and staff are folks with hearts of gold, and having had the privilege of visiting the facility I can assure you the rescues feel the same about them. My first experience with a thoroughbred can be seen on “YouTube” simply search Toorizziforoy,.In memory of Doreen Cobb
I have never been around horses and was always very intimated by their size and possible strength, basically scared of them. I had brought my granddaughters to Unbridled Thoroughbred Foundation as something to do with them and was so impressed by Susan Kayne and her volunteers by all that they have done for these beautiful thoroughbred horses. This visit opened up my eyes to the awareness to the insensitive and irresponsible care of these horses by their heartless owners. This non profit organization allows the public through appointments to be able to interact with these gentle horses. Susan has taken the time to educate and show children (and adults like me) how to groom, feed, and even read to these horses. The horses love it! I am so impressed by Susan and her volunteers in their tireless efforts to help save these horses and do what is right. Through their efforts anyone can see how these horses thrive being free and loved. Even I -chicken little, love going to see the horses and give them a rub on the nose. BRAVO to all at Unbridled Thoroughbred Foundation, and thank you!
As someone without any life experience with horses, I met Susan Kayne and learned about Unbridled when she and I were in a class together. It instantly became obvious that Susan stands out in this work. Her compassion and her expertise with the rescue horses are powerful drivers toward her mission. Watching her build out Unbridled has been a bright spot for me, an affirmation of human kindness.
I have known Susan Kayne the woman that founded and manages Unbridled Thoroughbred Foundation. I must tell you Susan is a true asset to all equines and especially those abandoned thoroughbreds she has taken in under her loving wings. Those horses lucky enough to get their lives saved by Susan are very lucky horses indeed. Susan is not only a Thoroughbred expert but she is an excellent teacher of the proper care, handling and treatment of all horses. I consider her my friend and a good one at that. I will forever be in awe at her tenacity and patience to care for those neglected, abused, starved, and abandoned souls. May God bless Susan Kayne all the days of her life so she can continue her good work. I would recommend Unbridled without hesitation! Keep up your good work Susan. You are extraordinary!
This is an amazing charity!! Susan Kanye is an angel on earth!! They rescue horses that are on their way to the killing pens of greedy people that profit from their murder. Being in the horse business I have witnessed it many times and have donated to save these lovely animals. one of them was one that we had on our farm for a time who was then sold and somehow ended up in this situation. Susan notified us about Secret Forest and we were able to save her through our donation to Unbridled. She spent the remainder of her years at the refuge being loved and cared for. They deserve all the help we can give them. Thanks, Brenda Courtney
Unbridled is the embodiment of their motto, “Love in Action”. I have volunteered here and witnessed this. Susan Kayne’s vision and knowledge serves as an example to others who want to touch and be touched by the lives of these rescued horses. Horses that arrive broken by abuse and neglect bloom here under loving, patient hands and hearts. Bruised bodies are healed and broken spirits are nurtured. I am so proud to be a part of this amazing organization.
Unbridled is an excellent organization that rescues horse that have just been thrown away. It provides love and hope for those magnificent horses that no longer race. Many of these horses have been starved for both food and love. Many of these horse have given there all only to be found on the road to slaughter. As long as the pipeline that sends these horse to slaughter house we will need organizations such as Unbridled And Susan Kanye to protect and care for horses.
Susan Kayne is an angel for these horses. In particular, the spent broodmares that are thrown away by the racing industry. When these horses can no longer produce foals, they are considered useless and tragically end up in feedlots, destined for slaughter. This is the ultimate betrayal of these magnificent, sentient, loyal animals. Susan will raise money and bail them out, giving them sanctuary for the rest of their lives. THANK YOU Unbridled for all that you do. For the boundless love, care and attention that these horses desperately deserve. When the racing industry can only see a "spent" throwaway horse, Susan sees a soul that must be rescued.
I started volunteering at Unbridled a year ago. Susan Kayne has so much love and knowledge for these magnificent horses. Her care for them is extraordinary. Every day is learning experience for me and I thoroughly enjoy helping out in every aspect. There is nothing better then going there after a stressful day and being able to brush and care for them. I am so thankful to be a part of this organization
Unbridled is not only a wonderful sanctuary for these magnificent horses, but it's an educational institution for all of the people who visit. Whenever we have people visiting from NYC we bring them to Unbridled so they can learn all about these beautiful thoroughbreds and their stories. Susan personally gave me and my family a tour on our first visit. The two kids, who were visiting from NYC, learned all about horses and now it's all they talk about. They cannot wait for their next visit this spring. Visiting these beauties calms me when I visit and when I leave I feel like I just meditated. I highly recommend visiting when in the area as it is one of the best things to do in the Hudson Valley.
If I could give Unbridled and Susan Kayne ten stars I would. This is an organization that pours its soul into caring for horses that others abuse, discard and disown. Susan Kayne leads the way, working tirelessly at the stable, online, on the phone and in person at a variety of events. I am lucky enough to be a volunteer and each week my heart is filled with love as I interact with the horses. They are excellent listeners! And they definitely remind you to be totally present. If everyone could experience seeing a skinny, sick, depressed horse transform into a healthy being displaying her unique personality with a joyful zest for life, we could change the system . As John F Kennedy said, “One person can make a difference, and everyone should try”
Unbridled Thoroughbred Foundations (UTF) is love in action. The sanctuary facility is a non-profit equine rescue organization that plays an important role in safeguarding the welfare of unwanted and neglected horses no longer useful to their owners, or in some situations where it has become impossible for owners to continue to provide care.
Returning rescued horses to optimum health, promoting humane and responsible treatment, and providing them with a safe sanctuary while they regain their unique wholeness is the essence of the program. Educating the public to the perils of these majestic thoroughbred athletes is another important goal of the program at UTF.
I feel privileged, as a volunteer, to be even a small part of the remarkable transformation of the horses as their broken bodies and spirits are nurtured, mended and revitalized through the dedication, love and care they receive from Susan Kayne with assistance from a team of dedicated volunteers.
Interacting with the horses touches my soul and it is my hope that I am touching their most inner souls as well. There is nothing quite like a warn nuzzle from the horse you are grooming or a nicker from one of the mares during morning feeding. I know one thing when I walk into the stable, it's a place of healing and love for all who enter.
The love and caring and community that is around these thoroughbreds just overflows. You see it from the outside, in the meticulously-kept grounds. Inside, the horses are ridiculously spoiled with regular pedicures (horse-style of course), grooming, access to fields, and endless attention. Outside involvement in a myriad of ways is welcomed, as I found out when I "caroled to the horses"!
Tireless endless THANKLESS work that Susan and her crew manage is truly amazing and especially to these horses lives - Maybe one day she can turn the table on the RICH owners who no longer can AFFORD to take care the horses they take so much from -
Keep up your fantastic work Susan - and you will make a difference
The love and support given to Thoroughbreds through Unbridled is amazing! They have inspired me to be more vocal and to get involved. Thank you Susan for all that you do!
Very excited to see Unbridled in our community. There is clearly an immense amount of love and labor that goes into caring for even one horse, let alone over a dozen. Thank you to the volunteers and donors who spend their time and resources caring for these beautiful animals. They say you can tell a lot about a person by how they treat animals, so it's safe to say Unbridled is full of people with hearts of gold. It is nice to know that 100% of what you donate goes directly towards the rescue and care process. This is something the Coxsackie and Athens community should be very proud of!
I had the opportunity to meet the lovely team at Unbridled Thoroughbred Foundation. They are a valued Greene County Chamber Member, and my personal experience with their team has been nothing but amazing! We are so glad to have them as part of our community. To see the passion of what Unbridled believes, the love they have for what they do, and the dedication to which they cling to in order to accomplish their mission, is again, an amazing experience.
This is my favorite foundation. You can truly see the care and honor these caregivers have for the rescues. It is such a humbling experience to visit the farm that this foundation is held on.
Unbridled is a great organization helping rescue horses. It also helps educate the public because many people do not understand the hardships of this industry. The community is loving the program and its very nice to see the horses morning and afternoons when we drive by the property. Hopefully the more present it is in our community, the more help and interest we will get in our goals.
Unbridled is an incredible foundation doing amazing work and helping horses live better, healthier, and happier lives.
I meet Susan Kayne, the founder and have been watching The Unbridled Thoroughbred Foundation operate for over 2 years now and I have witnessed the many real hardships they have dealt with daily along the way. As anyone who has owned a horse knows, the care of even one thoroughbred is no easy undertaking and in this case, requires many volunteers willing to devote their time and resources to Unbridled's family of thoroughbreds. At last count there are 14 and this is constantly changing number. In addition, the horses need adequate feed and care, adequate space and shelter, and at the core, this means regular adequate funding to make it all " consistently " work. Not a single day can pass that these animals in Unbridled's care can be left to fend for themselves. I have never seen a group, which under Susan's leadership is more dedicated to the first and most important task at hand which in this case is that day to day care of their retired thoroughbred horses. In addition the mission of educating those around us of the terrible plight these animals face which includes being shipped out of the country for slaughter, is what will hopefully allow the mistreatment to stop. Those who see it and become aware, hopefully can not turn a deaf ear and will agree with Unbridled 's work and pitch in and give help however they can. I have witnessed first hand that 100% of all funding goes directly to the needs of the horses and no where else! The abandonment of these majestic creatures once they are no longer "profitable" for their owners in the racing circuit is hard to understand. I see this as a very worthy cause providing both necessary safety net for today as well as an educational forum to steer the future that I am truly proud to help financially as much as I can.
Unbridled is a unique and fantastic organization. They’re dedicated to thoroughbred horse rescue from slaughter to advocacy and everything in between. The care and transitions that these beautiful, majestic animals make tell the story of Unbridled’s devotion, passion and compassion to the cause. I highly recommend taking the time to learn more about this wonderful organization.
Susan Kayne devotes her entire being to the rescued horses at Unbridled. She rehomes those sound enough for second careers and provides sanctuary to the horses that cannot. Susan also advocates for horses at every opportunity, is a prominent equine educator, and cares about animal welfare as much as any one person can.
I thoroughly enjoy my time with Susan and her herd at Unbridled. I have done everything from cleaning stalls, helping with fundraising and, as a writer with 46 years working with horses, have written extensively about horse rescue, Thoroughbred aftercare, and Susan herself.
Kayne's transparency goes above and beyond what most charitable organizations do and she is most worthy of recognition in several fields of endeavor, especially in Thoroughbred rescue and running a nonprofit.
Unbridled does what a lot of us wish we could do but can't. You should feel good about donating to them because the money is well spent. If you're considering donating a percentage of your estate to a cause or causes I can recommend Unbridled. Stop by and see the operation for yourself or have somebody check it out and have them bring pictures back with them.
I love Unbridled Thoroughbred Foundation's mission for these horses.
The work they do for "rescued" Thoroughbred horses is amazing. They give these horses a second chance after being given up by the prior owner. Many of these horses have gone on to second careers. This non-profit organization is the most transparent organization ever for rescued horses. They show you videos of their horses, their facilities, what they feed the horses, the care given to the horses by volunteers and they share all Veterinarian situations and invoices. They have an open house policy so you can visit them at any time to see the horses and the volunteers in action. They provide a receipt for your donation immediately upon receipt. This non-profit is a perfect example of how all horse rescues non-profits should operate. Unbridled Thoroughbred Foundation is an outstanding non-profit volunteer organization.
This is an absolutely wonderful organization that clearly cares deeply about each horse they rescue and rehome! I’ve been very impressed with Susan’s endless efforts!! She works tirelessly each day on behalf of the horses she cares so deeply for! Bravo!!
Susan Kayne- founder of Unbridled Thoroughbred Foundation is the perfect representation of what a rescue and rehabilitation of TB should be. The transformations of the horses are remarkable. Susan’s continual communication about the horses and everything Unbridled leaves you wanting to learn even more- and better yet- wanting to do more! Witnessing Susan’s hands on approach- whether in the barn or speaking to officials and educating the public about the plight of the TB-really motivates me to get others involved with UTF. I have watched many TB thrive in Susan’s care and has been a blessing in my life and will continue to support her and the beautiful horses at UTF!
This is a wonderful organization that really does perform miracles. Unlike some re-homing organizations that are fortunate to be given healthy OTTB'S that have been well taken care of, Unbridled rescues horses in the poorest condition and brings them back to health. The photos of the horses at time of rescue and only months later tells the whole story.
I am beyond impressed by the work that Susan Kayne has done for the animals in need. She cares for them nearly single handedly and often with limited resources. Her horses may have behavioral and health concerns, but her experience, long hours, and unwavering compassion ensures that the horses at UTF will receive the very best treatments possible. Upon visiting, it was clear that she works wonders in the rehabilitation of animals that the horse-racing industry has thrown away. Her work additionally helps bring awareness to the sad and brutal truth of horse-racing: that these trusting animals, who literally risk life and limb for their guardians, are often sent to slaughter or neglectful situations. Despite giving their best and often after sustaining life-threatening injuries, despite earning their owners and breeders countless dollars, they are more often than not relegated to a brutal death or a life of chronic pain. She understands that these animals endure chronic physical and emotional pain and does everything she can to help assuage these issues. Upon my visit to her facilities, Susan could not have been more kind as she took me on a tour and introduced me to her animals. Ms. Kayne is one of the most thoughtful individuals who I have had the pleasure to meet in equine rescue, and the products of her efforts are inspiring. I wish more people were aware of her accomplishments in equine advocacy as well as the issues threatening American horses today. I will continue to donate to UTF as long as her message and rescue efforts continue.
Review from Guidestar
Amazing foundation and volunteers who put their heart and soul into the care of these majestic animals.
Unbridled Thoroughbred Rescue is a top notch horse rescue making a significant difference in the lives of at risk horses who need a second chance at the lives they truly deserve. Susan Kayne, Founder of the rescue is so incredibly knowledgeable about the needs of these amazing animals, and communicates that in such a loving way not only to the horses, but also to the volunteers helping her care for them. Each and every horse that comes to Unbridled receives love, compassion and the hands on care they need so they can be rehomed in the perfect situation for them to thrive. I very much enjoy my time there with these very special horses, under the direction of Susan. If you love horses, and have a passion for rescue, this could be a wonderful place for you to volunteer too!
Unbridled Thoroughbred Foundation is a phenominal hands on organziation. The transperancy inovled is incredibly refreshing and the dedication to the horses speaks for itself in the overall care and well being of those in its care. Susan Kayne is also a wonderful leader in humane education and also a staunch advocate for Thoroughbreds & improving the industry. She is willing to stick her neck out, ask questions others won’t and encourage fruitful dialogue. I reccomend getting involved in whatever way suits your availability and see for yourself! The fellow supporters are also an amazing, welcoming and dedicated crew- a true treasure!
This organization is spot on and does it right. The funding is used 100% for the care of the horses, and they get truly amazing care for their bodies AND their minds.
The vast majority of the horses under Unbridled's care have come to the organization in very poor shape. They are, almost to a one, traumatized and mentally and physically depleted from their recent experiences. Many have medical issues to overcome or healing injuries.
Their physical health is generally restored within months. While amazing in and of itself, that is, frankly, the easy part. At Unbridled, they are given the all the time, love and understanding they need to restore their mental health, which is a much more of a challenge.
It is an absolute joy to watch these beautiful animals blossom and to see their spirits soar. They do not leave for new homes until they are fully ready to be successful in their new environment. And they ARE successful in their new placements, with a very high percentage of those taken in finding their forever homes within a short time.
As someone who volunteers and is on site several times per week, I can honestly say I have NEVER seen animals so conscientiously and continually well cared for. They never lack for whatever they need, and it is always of the best quality available.
I am a volunteer, a donor, and an advocate, and have had extensive experience with rescues of all types and purposes. I can honestly say this is one of the best-run rescues I have ever had the opportunity to work with.
Susan IS making a difference in the welfare of many horses. Her determination and drive keep her moving forward. Her endless hours of labor and love have brought life and spirit back to their broken souls. It is clear she puts them first! Look at her work ,the before and after pictures are a real testament to what can happen .
I have seen it first hand what can be done.I can also say that donations made to Unbridled are for the care and well being of the horses.Every dollar is spent on them and only them. It's a great feeling to be part of a worthy cause.I look forward to her posts and updates every day. I enjoy the company of all of the caretakers and the time spent at the Stable.
I look forward to working with Susan and will be hands on in supporting the growth of Unbridled and I hope you will too!Get involved, you will soon feel as I do now.I am honored and proud to be part of this group!
The work that Susan Kayne and the "Unbridled " organization is doing is nothing short of miraculous. They have saved and improved the lives of countless innocent creatures. Susan is utterly passionate about her work and is completely devoted to these magnificent animals. She works tirelessly not only finding and rehabilitating rescued horses, but working to raise awareness and advocate for their humane treatment. My whole family supports Susan and the "Unbridled " mission.
I have been a volunteer with Unbridled since August 2018. Everything is done with the horses benefit in mind. Founder, President, and Chief Mucker Susan, makes sure there is complete and total transparency in all aspects. She has a emphasis on education, whether it’s how we as a society have gotten to this position, or how we can do better moving forward. Also, follow up on those who have been adopted out is almost as important as those that are taken in. This is a very worthy organization.
Everything is done with the horses best interest. The dedication and devotion of Susan Kayne and all of the Unbridled team is amazing and shows through each horse's recovery from the trauma they have endured and their return to health, happiness and being given the time and care they need to learn to love, trust and live as they were meant to live. If there were more than 5 stars Unbridled would get as many as I could recommend!!!!
I have been and continue to be a Donor to Unbridled Thoroughbred Foundation for many months. I appreciate Susan's philosophies of both rescue and aftercare responsibilities of Thoroughbreds who need a new beginning in their lives. Additionally, I support her focus on bringing change to the thoroughbred industry with responsible breeding and an understanding of the breeder's and owner's responsibility for the lifetime care of the great horses.
I have been following and supporting Unbridled and Susan Kayne for years. Her capacity for love, respect and compassion for horses, humans and all sentient beings is beyond measure. Her message for Unbridled is one of compassion and education of WHO horses ARE and not just what they can DO for us. I really connect with that. I have watched how hard she works making sure the horses in her care come first and receive the best of everything so that their life after being saved from slaughter is a good, kind, long and loving one. Susan is open and honest about every part of her foundation and I love that she shares the daily routine with everyone and welcomes everyone to come and visit and see for themselves exactly what goes on. Many other rescues that I donated to left me feeling that something was “off”. That left me feeling very uncomfortable and never donated again. Susan’s deep appreciation and gratitude for Unbridled supporters like nothing I have ever experience before from a rescue. I am a fan and supporter for life! Most every other rescue need take lessons from Susan Kayne because THiS is how it’s done!!
I have been volunteering nearly a year with Unbridled Thoroughbred Foundation and it’s founder, Susan Kayne.
Unbridled pulls Thoroughbred racehorses from a horrible demise, unspeakable... and rehabilitates them to their former glory... redeemed for love and adopted out to loving homes for a long life with a second career.
The transformation is amazing, through Susan’s efforts, lifelong experience with Thoroughbreds and unconditional love beyond words.
I am ever so proud to be part of this organization! While other organizations accept donated Thoroughbreds, we literally save them from death and give them hope for love and a new life, so well deserved!
I recently became a volunteer with this organization. The time and effort that the founder of the organization, Susan Kayne, puts forth for the benefit of the horses is astounding and impressive!
She has saved so many horses from the killpen who were in such horrible condition and brought them back to life, not only physically, but emotionally able to start enjoying life again as a horse. You can't believe your eyes when you see these horses today and look at pictures of them when Susan got them.
She tries to match the horses up to potential adopters in a situation that is best for each horse as well as the adopter.
I am so glad that her organization exists because these horses would have gone to slaughter instead of living their life now, free of pain and fear.
