I am beyond impressed by the work that Susan Kayne has done for the animals in need. She cares for them nearly single handedly and often with limited resources. Her horses may have behavioral and health concerns, but her experience, long hours, and unwavering compassion ensures that the horses at UTF will receive the very best treatments possible. Upon visiting, it was clear that she works wonders in the rehabilitation of animals that the horse-racing industry has thrown away. Her work additionally helps bring awareness to the sad and brutal truth of horse-racing: that these trusting animals, who literally risk life and limb for their guardians, are often sent to slaughter or neglectful situations. Despite giving their best and often after sustaining life-threatening injuries, despite earning their owners and breeders countless dollars, they are more often than not relegated to a brutal death or a life of chronic pain. She understands that these animals endure chronic physical and emotional pain and does everything she can to help assuage these issues. Upon my visit to her facilities, Susan could not have been more kind as she took me on a tour and introduced me to her animals. Ms. Kayne is one of the most thoughtful individuals who I have had the pleasure to meet in equine rescue, and the products of her efforts are inspiring. I wish more people were aware of her accomplishments in equine advocacy as well as the issues threatening American horses today. I will continue to donate to UTF as long as her message and rescue efforts continue.
