Specialty areas within the sonographer credentials include abdomen, neurosonology, obstetrics and gynecology, (rdms); adult and pediatric echocardiography (rdcs); noninvasive vascular technology (rvt), physician vascular interpretation rpvi, and musculoskeletal sonography (rmsk). Ardms has become a recognized standard for ultrasound certification by many accreditation programs. Credentials awarded by ardms are widely accepted in the medical community by ultrasound and vascular professional organizations, including the american college of radiology, the american institute of ultrasound in medicine, the american society of echocardiography, the canadian society of diagnostic medical sonographers, the international society for cardiovascular surgery, the joint commission on allied health personnel in ophthalmology, the society for vascular surgery, the society of diagnostic medical sonographers, and the society of vascular technology. The examinations are developed by exam development task forces made up of volunteer subject matter experts. The task forces survey job functions and practices in various specialties and develop test questions based upon a blueprint of job tasks in ultrasound. Task forces consist of sonographers, vascular technologists, physicians, and scientists. The members of each task force are knowledgeable in the subject area of the particular examination. The only means of obtaining an ardms credential is by examination. Required examination prerequisites must be met before an applicant can take an ardms examination. Applicants are then required to pass two comprehensive examinations to earn a credential: (1) the single physics principles and instrumentation exam, and (2) a specialty exam. Except for the physician's vascular interpretation and musculoskeletal examination which only require one examination to be passed. An applicant may not use a credential offered by ardms until the credential has been earned and the applicant has received official notification by ardms. Additional credentials may be earned by successfully completing the specialty exams. Eligible candidates may earn all five ardms credentials.
