Sherry Weinstein is the brilliant Chairwoman of the Board of Trustees and The Executive Committee and the best friend anyone could have. She is a wordsmith par excellence and writes grants for funding, manages Board government and compliance, looks forward with strategic planning and is the liaison to the members of the professional council. Her ability to quietly motivate our volunteers with her enthusiasm and drive leaves one in awe. We are so fortunate to be in the orbit of these two amazing women.

I honestly don’t know what I would have done after my diagnosis of NSCLC Exon 20 had it not been for my conversation with Marcia Horn. Not only did she lead me to some very important information but she also introduced me to a very specialized team of Exon 20 professionals! Carm Fazio RN has always been a light at the end of my very narrow tunnel! Her professional experiences and advice have helped me deal with side effects and calmed my Scanxiety nerves! She has also been instrumental in helping me interpret my imagining results. The Exon 20 community is blessed to have such a caring, knowledgeable, “always there for us” group of well educated, well informed, and passionately interested kind, loving human beings. Aside from the 4 different drug therapies that I have been on since 2021, I credit ICAN for my being able to share my story.

Marcia Horn, CEO of ICAN, is an exceptional patient advocate (a/k/a angel on earth)!
On June 22, 2023, we learned that my husband’s Stage 4 lung cancer had progressed and Tabrecta was no longer effective. We emailed Marcia that night to provide my husband’s medical information for the national registry project, which might help other MET patients. We were amazed when she called us later that night, and shared treatment options in great detail. Her calm voice and valuable advice lifted our spirits and gave us hope on an otherwise depressing day.
Since our initial conversation, Marcia has been a rock solid advocate providing timely information, answering questions, and connecting us with an out of state oncologist with whom we consulted concerning a clinical study. We are deeply grateful for Marcia’s commitment to patients and her help navigating the complex treatment options. My husband and I want to thank Marcia for her kindness and compassion.
We also want to let John Hallick’s family know that John provided hope and inspiration to us on the day we first learned that my husband had a MET ex 14 mutation. During the consult with our oncologist at Moffitt Cancer Center in 2022, he gave us John’s name and the Met Crusaders website. A recent post on John’s Facebook Group connected us with Marcia and ICAN. John continues to help others through his remarkable efforts.

I appreciate being in constant learning and improvement during this journey, in which I enhance my time management, responsibility, and communication abilities.
Amazing support!
I joined Exon 20 group early this year after I was diagnosed with stage 4 NSCLC exon 20 mutations. It was the best decision I have made! I received such great support, care, and valuable info that I needed! Thank you Exon 20! You have a Great team and Great dedication!
In July of 2016, I was diagnosed with NSCLC. My stage 4 status came from out of the blue as lung cancer wasn't on my radar as a healthy 57 year old never smoker. Biomarker testing revealed a novel EGFR ERBB4 fusion as the driver of my cancer and I set out to find out as much as I could about my cancer and how it could be treated. The past six years have been a journey of discovery encompassing chemotherapy, SBRT and two clinical trials. In June of 2022, I was approved to begin taking a targeted drug trialed for EGFR EXON20 mutation, off label and for compassionate use, my seventh line of treatment. This led me to Marcia Horn and the EXON20/HER2 group of brave and knowledgable survivors and care givers.
My experience has been that Marcia and ICAN are committed to offering patients such as myself hope in the face of a lack of approved targeted treatment options for rare mutations. Her network of oncology specialists is extraordinary and as an understanding and tireless advocate, she spares nothing in helping a patient get the best opinions and treatment options possible. The volunteers that work with ICAN are dedicated, compassionate and knowledgeable, sharing their experience and expertise with patients and caregivers who are looking for direction and support.
Over the past six years, I have been an ardent advocate for lung cancer awareness, research, cancer funding and the inclusion of integrative care. ICAN's vision has infused a renewed desire in me to creatively push for expanded access in clinical trials, encompassing a wider patient population and the possibilities this might uncover. ICAN's vision and inclusiveness speaks to me and I am honored to add my energy and my story to the shared mission I have found with Marcia Horn and ICAN.
I was diagnosed with NSCLC, EGFR, Exon 20 in April of 2021 during COVID. My family and I did not know much about Lung Cancer in general (like many, we thought that only smokers could get it) and knew even less about mutations and potential treatments.
After the original shock of the diagnosis and after trying to learn and educate ourselves as much as we could, we quickly came to the realization that there wasn't much information or support about the Exon 20 mutation and even less here in Canada.
We were VERY fortunate to get in touch with the ICAN organization and with Ms. Marcia Horn, who took the time to explain to us what my diagnosis meant and what would the ICAN organization could do for us.
They have been a "game changer" in our case, offering us credible and timely information about treatments that are out there and also on what is coming up in the pipeline as well as offer us support via FB Groups and more importantly Hope !
I would definitely recommend supporting this group and will personally continue to support them in the future, I simply couldn't imagine navigating my cancer journey without them!
Thank you ICAN!
Hello Cancer Advocates & Survivors!
I was introduced to the Exon20 group earlier this year. I'll just cut to the chase - this organization has changed my life! I was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer in 2021 and within a few weeks my testing revealed a very rare type - Exon 20 insertion mutation. While many newly diagnosed patients start combing the internet for details, I took a different route and chose to focus on my immediate recovery as I was dealing with a nearly collapsed lung and malignant pleural effusion that was very painful. At the time, I didn't want anyone sharing statistics or longevity details with me - I just wanted to get better even though I was told there was no cure for this complex disease.
At the beginning of this year, I joined a local cancer support group and began attending several zoom calls but none of the lung cancer patients had heard of Exon20 and were receiving treatments that didn't work with Exon20. Someone eventually connected me to Marcia Horn. When we spoke, I was amazed by her knowledge of this disease, available treatment options, and understanding of my diagnosis and treatment thus far. She reiterated how important it is to stay on top of the latest research and to challenge my doctors. While I've been lucky to receive very proactive care from an excellent oncologist, many other survivors have not been so fortunate, especially when navigating very large health systems.
The Exon20 Facebook page and the weekly care partner/survivor calls are a valuable resource for us! We are able to share our experiences and pass on tips to alleviate side effects - all of course with consultation with our doctors. In my case, I was suffering greatly from a skin infection that just wouldn't go away. If it weren't for the advice I received from a group member, I may have had to drop my current treatment and I'm doing very well on it now. I look forward to our weekly calls not only for cancer care tips, but also for emotional support and real-time connection with survivors just like me.
If you have donated to ICAN or are considering a donation, thank you! WE are parents, grandparents, young adults, siblings, friends, co-workers, veterans, neighbors, etc., doing our best to stay positive through a life altering diagnosis. Let's do everything we can to increase funding, find a cure and make this a very treatable disease!
I was diagnosed with Exon 20 NSCLC almost two years ago, and no i do not smoke, which is the first thought that so many seem to have when they hear someone has lung cancer. That is not the case with Exon 20, it is a non-smoker’s lung cancer that affects healthy individuals. I’ve come to know that this is a rare disease with not a lot of knowledge or information about it out there in the world of general oncology or even amongst a good portion of thoracic oncologists. That’s where the invaluable expertise of Marcia Horn and the ICAN Exon 20 Group comes into play. Marcia is a tireless advocate for Exon 20 patients and their caregivers and families. Marcia knows all of “the” people in the Exon 20 world, from Exon 20 expert oncologists, to the drug companies and their researchers and representatives working on treatments, to knowing all about the available treatments and those in the pipeline. If you’re an Exon 20 patient, you need to connect with Marcia as she will connect you with the doctors and treatments you need. As Exon 20 patients, given the rarity of this disease, we cannot afford to not have Marcia Horn and the ICAN Exon 20 group advocating and working for us and in our corners. The ICAN Exon 20 Group needs all of the funding it can possibly receive to help fuel more research for better and more efficacious treatments for this rare and random disease that anyone can get. Anyone reading this needs to know that this disease seemingly occurs with no rhyme or reason and strikes otherwise healthy individuals in the prime of their lives…..it can happen to anyone and any of their loved ones. There are very limited treatments at this point for Exon 20 and the number of people being diagnosed with it is growing, which is why an organization like ICAN Exon 20 Group needs all of the funding it can possibly receive to help fund further research into this devastating disease to help save the lives of the innocent victims of it.
Marcia and ICAN have been instrumental in finding new connections and trails for my rare salivary gland cancer. I don’t know where I would be without her. Not only that, Marcia’s kindness is endless and her devotion to helping me find a cure in unrelenting.
I’m caregiver to my spouse who was diagnosed in February 2021 with EGFR Exon 20 NSCLC. I cannot begin to express how much information, support and advocacy is given by this organization, and in particular, Marcia Horn, who is truly a Godsend and angel on earth. Marcia works tirelessly and non-stop (I’m not sure she even sleeps!) to advocate for patients and to get them to the proper doctors and proper treatments to help them with this disease that general oncologists have very limited, if any, knowledge of. Marcia connects patients to practitioners who are experts with this disease. The knowledge and connections that Marcia has are beyond invaluable for Exon 20 patients and you will not find the benefits that she brings to Exon 20 patients anywhere else or with any other organization. For a rare disease like Exon 20, this is beyond an invaluable service for patients to have access to, at no cost to them. ICAN Exon 20 is one of, if not THE, most helpful and supportive organizations I’ve ever experienced. Lung cancer can have such a negative stigma associated with it. The vast majority of Exon 20 patients are never or hardly ever smokers. This is not a disease that is associated with smoking, yet because it is a lung cancer, it is automatically stigmatized and does not get the proper funding for research that it so desperately needs. Everyone needs to remember, if you have lungs, you can get lung cancer. We need more funding for research for Exon 20 as this is a terrible and rare disease that strikes healthy people in the prime of their lives……and their only fault is that they have lungs! ICAN Exon 20 is a guiding light for so many and they need all of the monetary help they can possibly get to help fund research into this rare disease to gain a better understanding of why it happens in the first place and to bring more effective, safe, long-term treatments to those diagnosed with it. It is something that can happen to any one of us or our loved ones.
ICAN and its Founder and CEO Marcia Horn have had a very positive impact on my Cancer experience. Marcia has been at my side ANYTIME I am in need of information and it's always delivered with such positivity and caring. Marcia always seems to have the absolute most current research and is able to put it in context for me personally. I could not be more appreciative of the work their organization is doing.
I am Stage 4 Lung Cancer with an Exon 20 gene mutation. when i was first diagnosed there was trials out for this mutation but no FDA approved treatment yet. I turned to ICAN Marcia horn for advice as soon as i was diagnosed and have followed her lead ever since. So happy there was someone to turn to for advice which way to go. No sure what i would of done without this group. happy to report still here after 2 years and currently NED thank you for all your help!
We are snowbirds. I am the caregiver for my wife who has multiple myeloma. It was diagnosed in AZ in 2019. She started with the oncologist who handled her case in the hospital. His manner was arrogant, and we shared with our friend, Donna Stone, that she needed a different doctor. Donna connected us with Marcia at ICAN, who recommended 2 oncologists. My wife started with one of them, and when he accepted a job in Chicago, she connected with the second recommendation. Both doctors were kind, explained things well and provided excellent care. We hate to think how things might have been without the caring guidance of Marcia and Donna. Mike Lerner
When I first came to Arizona in 2019, I was diagnosed with multiple myloma, I had no idea what the disease was about and even more frightening, I didn't know any physicians or medical centers to follow up with my care. My dear friend Donna Stone took me under her wing and directed me to ICAN, International Cancer Advocacy Network. Under the guidance of Marcia Horn, President and CEO of ICAN, and Donna who is an ICAN donor services volunteer, I began my journey to wellness, both physically and emotionally. I cannot adequately describe the professional and personal guidance that over these years has brought me to a level of comfort and understanding. As a former educator, I know what it means to feel confident that the professionals whose care I am under have the knowledge and compassion to help me have the best quality of life possible while living with cancer. I am so indebted to ICAN on many levels and encourage others to be a part of this vital organization in whatever way is meaningful to them. Special kudos to Donna Stone who is my guardian angel. In 2019, I was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer with Exon 20 mutation. This particular mutation has a poor prognosis and I had little hope of surviving. I contacted the ICAN Exon 20 group and Marcia Horn reached out to me. Marcia is a godsend. She is by far, one of the most knowledgeable people on the planet when it comes to treatment options for Exon 20. She provided me with research materials on my specific sub mutation and gave me hope where there was none. With stage 4 lung cancer, hope and effective options make all the difference.
Since then, I've been participating in the Exon 20 social media groups supported by ICAN. The Facebook group, moderated by Kristen Lynn and Susan Johnson has been extremely valuable for members to discuss and learn from each other about available treatments and side effects associated with the treatments. Since the group members are patients or caregivers, the discussion is relevant in providing solutions to issues that each member may be facing. I've used feedback from members to resolve some of my treatment side effects and it made a huge difference in my quality of life. ICAN also sponsors a weekly Zoom meeting for Exon 20 patients. This group, moderated by Caren Suesserman, has been great in giving us human contact with other Exon 20 patients and caregivers and is great for checking in and discussing issues that we're facing and obtaining possible solutions from other members.
I would heartily recommend that all Exon 20 cancer patients contact ICAN to discuss the possible treatment options that are available to you. It doesn't matter whether you live in the Americas, Asia, Australia, Europe, or Africa, ICAN stays on top of treatments all over the world and can help you.
This group has been invaluable to me in my journey with Her2 Exon20 non small cell lung cancer. I was told by my physicians that I was incurable and had between 6 months and 5 years to live. No hope was given. No discussion on new treatments, nothing. That is a hard pill to swallow.
The first time I was given hope was when I spoke to Marcia Horn at the Exon 20 group. She told me about all the new medications coming down the line and that the aim is to make it a disease that I can manage and live with, not die from.
The weekly Zoom group moderated by Caren Suesserman has been a lifesaver for me. I learn something new every week and when we talk to each other, I think it gives us all hope for the future.
Finding ICAN was a godsend. Shortly after diagnosis and having little information provided by the oncologists about the disease, we were able to connect with Marcia Horn of ICAN. After speaking with Ms. Horn, this was the first time we felt hopeful. We felt we had connected with someone who would help us navigate “the system” in an informed and efficient manner. Support received has included information about the disease and various treatment regimens and oncologic specialists with whom we could consult in our locality should the need arise. Additionally, we have also been fortunate enough to connect with other survivors in a weekly meeting where Ms. Caren Susserman provides a medium for everyone to share their story and ask questions while listening and empathetically guiding the discussion. Being able to connect with others who are on the same journey and facing the same decisions provides insight, which is invaluable! Ms. Susserman’s group has helped us connect with others who completely understand where we have been and what we are going through. Information is power and with support from ICAN and Ms. Susserman’s group of survivors and caregivers we feel we are becoming better self-advocates and enhancing our ability to make informed, sound decisions on this journey.
Now that it is September 2022, I have been an ICAN volunteer for 24 years. Not only has it given my life more purpose, I have watched from an upfront seat, the legendary advocacy being provided by ICAN professionals to thousands of late-stage cancer patients. As Chairman of ICAN's Board of Trustees for the last 11 years, I've heard day after day from ICAN's inner team about the lifesaving and life-extending services provided to our patients. While we still run under the radar screen to some extent, we are highly recognized and esteemed for the services we provide in conjunction with experts the world over. I am ecstatic to be part of this team and expect to continue my work with ICAN for the rest of my life.

I've known Marcia and Steve for over 5 years now, and I've seen them in action. Unfortunately, I know a few people who have been diagnosed with various types of cancer over the last 5 years. ICAN is the first contact for me. In addition, I also have prostate cancer. Marcia and Steve are a fabulous resource for me to pursue information pertinent to my situation. Marcia and Steve seem to find the time to respond to any and all correspondence, no matter how busy they are.
ICAN and Marcia Horn are absolutely fantastic. Cancer is a horrible disease on its own, and going through the fight by yourself can be depressing and hopeless. ICAN fills the void with an abundance of hope, vast expertise, and access to the top medical teams and even clinical trials. Unbelievable organization!!
My wife had endured debunking surgery for stage 3 ovarian cancer and unfortunately several years later a metastasis recurrence to the brain developed. After just one inquiry and a couple of phone calls this wonderful organization, ICAN, arranged for a Gamma Knife procedure to eradicate the tumor. There is no way to fully express our gratitude to this dedicated and selfless group.
ICAN is truly a great organization. Recently, I accepted an offer at a Hospital in Cancer center and the employer was very impressed with the background I had. ICAN provided me with wonderful reference and made my dreams come true. ICAN volunteer work can really lead to a well medical paying jobs. They are exceptional at the cancer advocacy area as well as provide the volunteers with an exceptional reference. Janet Young and Andy Young are our Global Volunteer Human Resource team and throughout my volunteer work at ICAN they have been very supportive and always willing to help their volunteers. Further, they work tirelessly keeping our research team area going. I wish all the best for ICAN and the team.
When I was diagnosed with my second metastatic ovarian cancer to the brain I reached out to Marcia Horn and ICANN for guidance. Together they connected me with a surgery center in the area which could perform the complicated gamma knife surgery which saved my life 10+ years have passed and I can thankfully say, I’m here to sing the praises of ICANN. I’m a 15 year cancer survivor and so very proud and thankful to highly endorse ICANN.
My husband was diagnosed with bladder cancer and I didnot know where to start for more info. My friend Madhurim recommended me ICAN . I emailed Marcia K. Horn, with all
My questions & concerns. I was amazed how quick she responded with detailed info and helpful links. We had to go to Nashville for his treatments . We did not know where to start & stay and what to expect about the procedures. She sent me links within 5 mins of my email even after 11 pm. I am so grateful for her guidance during this difficult time. She really cared and took her time to explain Everything in detail. We were able to stay in safe hotel w patient discount near the hospital. I feel so comfortable and relieved that I can email and ask her about anything & anytime. She was just absolutely amazing I dont have words for.
Thank you Marcia.
My experience with ICAN was absolutely life-changing and a true miracle. When my father was diagnosed with stage-4 pancreatic cancer, I thought the worst. With pancreatic cancer being one of the most aggressive and deadly forms of cancer, I was worried that the time left with my father would be short (especially considering that navigating the disease and the steps that need to be taken to really fight it are extremely difficult for cancer patients and their families). Connecting with ICAN and Marcia Horn was nothing short of a miracle. Her vigorous advocating for my father's case, connecting him with some of the top oncology teams, and guiding him through the labyrinth that is navigating the disease extended his life by a whole 7 years (an absolutely astounding feat for a stage-4 pancreatic cancer patient). If it was not for ICAN and its incredible guidance, connections, and expertise, my father's battle with cancer would very likely have looked much worse. I am so blessed to have had my father's case handled by ICAN. I owe all of my cherished memories with him over those 7 years to ICAN's incredible work.
ICAN is one of the best non profit for providing resourceful information for the cancer patient. I have been working as a volunteer at ICAN for more that seven years and I know how quick and prompt they are at providing information to the families who seems to be confused and lost at first when they are newly diagnosed with cancer. One of my friend husband was diagnosed with bladder cancer recently. She was very worried about her husband condition so I told her about ICAN and contacting Marcia. Marcia was so quick at responding and proving help to my friend. She is so thankful to Marcia as her husband could get a second opinion an how to proceed further with his cancer case. Besides ICAN also provides a wonderful references to their volunteers for future job offer if you spare a little bit of time to this wonderful organization. You can help them by joining as a web research intern and move up the ladder if you really work sincerely for them. I support this ICAN because they are so rich with their information and it will always be very close to my heart.
ICAN is amazing! I did my Girl Scout gold award internship with ICAN, which required 80+ hours of volunteer work. Marcia Horn was my mentor. She was so helpful to me! My project was on Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) a cancer that affects children. I created a webpage for ICAN to help patients and families of children with DIPG have easy access to information about this cancer. I learned about DIPG, the current therapeutic options, and the genetic changes that can occur in DIPG. Marcia and Lynn helped get the website up and running. I am so glad that I have a chance to help other young people by creating this website. I hope that this saves them time finding out about DIPG. This makes me want to continue volunteering, and to consider a career in medicine.
Finally, the Girl Scouts of Greater New York selected my project and profiled my ICAN DIPG website as one of its top 5 Gold Award projects for 2020! I am so proud to be a part of ICAN, and especially to be able help young patients.
When my health insurance denied my oncologist's request for an off-label drug I desperately needed, the drug manufacturer (Novartis) agreed to provide the medication through their patient access program. Unfortunately, their internal approval process takes about 2 weeks, even for urgent cases. When you are a cancer patient for whom a previous therapy has failed, one thing you don't have is the luxury of time. Two weeks might as well be an eternity. Being out of time and out of options is scary, demoralizing and, oftentimes, excruciatingly painful.
When I requested assistance from ICAN, their representative immediately contacted Novartis on my behalf and was able to shorten the approval time from 2-3 weeks to 2 days! For someone in my shoes, that's akin to witnessing a miracle. Thank you, ICAN, for your professionalism, knowledge, and compassion.

Members of my family have been supporting ICAN for over a decade, and I have seen how remarkable Marcia and knowledgeable everyone at ICAN is. Marcia and my husband helped a close family friend with glioblastoma. His case was difficult and he was being treated by top NYC cancer centers- Cornell, Columbia, Sloan Kettering. Marcia and my husband would spend time conversing by phone and email researching biomarkers, and therapies. They provided my friend with science based research to discuss with his clinical teams. My friend was able to select the type of treatment that he thought would be best for him. He entered a clinical trial, and prospective biomarker trial. Marcia and my husband worked closely with him throughout his clinical treatment, two steps ahead of each decision point. Sadly, the cancer progressed , despite chemo and targeted therapy. My friend was peaceful, choosing to forego further clinical trials in his last months, knowing that great effort had been made on his behalf. His family members became experts in GBM treatment during his illness and actively partook in treatment decisions. Marcia and my husband took them through each point, helping them understand the science so that they could make decisions together with the clinical team. The passion and dedication they have to ICAN’s patients and their families is unending. I also helped them, doing literature research on GMB-related therapies and outcomes. My friend passed in peace, and to this day his family are thankful for all the support that Marcia and ICAN gave to them.
I connected with Marcia at ICAN soon after being diagnosed with Stage IV melanoma. She was so responsive and quick to help me connect with experts in the area, as well as pointing me towards helpful research. I am very grateful for the work that ICAN does, and especially for the amazing service that Marcia has always provided.
My mom was diagnosed with lymphoma several years ago. We assumed that was it. My mom was done. But my mom mustered up a lot of strength those first few years and got through. Unfortunately the cancer kept coming back and my mom needed guidance from elsewhere. She'd lost faith in the answers offered by her doctors. I think it was through a friend that she found Marcia at ICAN. Over the past few years, Marcia has been a source of both information and comfort for my mom who has turned to her for advice about what to do next. I am forever grateful for the help she gets from ICAN. They have helped restore her confidence that she can get through this.
ICAN is a unique cancer support service that provided guidance and resources for me following my unusual Metastatic Cancer Unknown Primary (CUP) diagnosis. When I felt I had no where else to turn, ICAN advocated for me and provided the direction and help I needed to pursue a successful treatment plan for my rare cancer. I am grateful and dedicated to sharing about this wonderful organization, where hope is only a phone call away. B.J.O.
ICAN is a one of a kind non-profit that encompasses World Wide attention for it's work with patients and their families to get the best clinical trials for each individual person in record time forthe care that is needed for each individual person. My daughter in law Emily needed the care of ICAN when she was in Vienna and Diagnosed with Breast Cancer ICAN worked with the best Doctors in Seattle where Emily is from her home town to get Emily seen and surgery done. Emily s outcome was very good with radiation Cancer free...She I and our family can't THANK ICAN enough for their expertise of 27 years serving communities Nationwide and 3rd.World Countries. .CHERYL HINTZEN-GAINES
ICAN stays on the cutting edge of cancer providers, treatments and techniques to advocate for cancer patients and their families. ICAN is responsive, responsible and compassionate, providing knowledge and lessons learned for the best possible healthy outcome for every patient.
If it were not for ICAN, Mom would not be alive.
They secured Immunotherapy drugs for her (which had been denied by Medicare on several occasions), and they got her into several drug trials that she should not have had access to.
They also worked with physicians in California and Arizona to ensure her tumor would be removed properly.
And, they did everything for free.
I can't tell you how many hours they spent on Mom's case. They were always there. Sometimes in the middle of the night. They also helped one of my close friends and one of my most important clients. They are amazing.
They are a non-profit, and all they care about is giving cancer patients the best chance possible to survive.
We were in a very dark place when we were told by a friend in Flagstaff to call Marcia Horn at ICAN. We had been battling two types of Lymphoma. One was a Hodgkin’s and the other non-Hodgkin. We were so baffled with the medical terms and treatment protocols that we needed some confirmation that what her doctors were doing was the correct path to follow. Marcia called us immediately after we left a message and spent over an hour asking questions and exploring the different protocols. Her calming voice and precise explanations gave my wife such comfort and peace of mind that helped us through the trials and tribulations over her 5 year battle to remission. Her vast knowledge of the different types of cancer and the treatments and facilities gave us great hope, especially when she told us we were in the best possible place at MD Anderson. We owe her a debt of gratitude. I would recommend that anyone needing an advocate to help them understand the complexities of cancer and the treatments associated with the various types would do good to contact her at the International Cancer Advocacy Network.
Without the wonderful professional knowledge and incredible patience from the people at ICAN, there is a very strong chance that cancer would have taken the life of a truly beautiful person in my life this year. The detailed guidance and advice saved her life. ICAN made sure I understood clearly as well. This amazing woman is getting stronger daily. I cannot thank ICAN (and Marcia in particular) enough for everything they did. You saved a very special person's life. THANK YOU!!!
In 2012 I was speaking to a good friend about doing something to "give back" to a cancer or human rights organization. Knowing how much I liked to "write" that good friend told me about ICAN. My good friend, Sherry Weinstein, is the Board of Trustees Chair and told me about the wonderful things ICAN and Marcia Horn do for cancer patients and their loved ones. As the parent of a cancer survivor I was delighted to be able to do something - even though it was only writing thank you notes and letters to donors and, occasionally making bank deposits and sending receipts for those deposits. Much has been written about Marcia, who is truly an angel on earth bringing hope to and advocacy for cancer patients in the U.S. and across the world. I'd like to also send kudos to my friend Sherry who, as board chair, is responsible for grant writing, fund development, institutional advancement, board governance and compliance issues, strategic planning and a myriad of other duties. She deals with so much in an eloquent and calm way. My job, and the job of my "co-writer," Donna Stone, is a very small part of what ICAN and its volunteers do on a daily basis to ensure that cancer patients (and their loved ones) have a way to fight for their lives as they face a terrible foe. We all pray for a day when deadly cancers are treatable and manageable illnesses. Because of ICAN this prayer has a hope of becoming a reality. Thank you so much to Marcia, Sherry and everyone associated with this incredible organization. I am proud to be a small part of this group.
After directing a couple of really sick people to ICAN when their doctors were ready to write them off, I was just amazed that their futures took a definite turn for the best. As far as I'm concerned, the brilliant professionals at ICAN saved my friends lives. Thank you, ICAN.
When my father was diagnosed with stage-4 pancreatic cancer, like many, he wasn't sure about the road ahead or what the best options were for survival. ICAN served as an angel on this earth for him, extending his life by 7 years (a tremendous feat considering he had one of the deadliest forms of cancer) with an exceptional analysis of his case at all stages. Many patients are unfortunately lost in a deluge of information when dealing with such a complex disease, and many are unfortunately written off. With ICAN by his side, this did not happen to my father. He was connected with the best doctors for his particular type of cancer and received the best counsel from ICAN during his fight against the disease. I am convinced that without ICAN's support, he would not have lived for so long after his diagnosis.
We almost lost our step-mom to breast cancer because of the wrong chemo protocal for her. ICAN helped us get to, and get an immediate appointment with, a specialist at UCSD in this particular type of cancer and my step-mom was able to work with them to get treatment that both resolved the cancer but also didn't overwhelm her system. I will be forever grateful for ICAN's expertise, network, and caring support when we needed it.
It gives me great satisfaction that my husband's program at ICAN - The Edwin Chesler Esophageal Cancer Patient Advocacy Program - helps so many other esophageal cancer patients. Not only is his memory kept alive with this program, but patients are kept alive as well. Thank you, ICAN.
We learnt about ICAN 4 years ago when my sister was diagnosed with lung cancer. With no knowledge of how to move forward, fears and desperate, we tried to write to Marcia Horn to seek help. Out of our expectation, she made every reply promptly even out of office hours by providing her professional information and advices. It appears to us that she is one of our family members who are ready there to offer her support at all times. She is so understanding, kind and considerate to understand that the patient and family members are in helpless and difficult situation to decide everything to save their beloved's life and need someone to guide along the way. Apart from valuable information and possible alternatives of treatment, she always shows her care and comfort to us to make us feel better and positive on the difficult road ahead.
With some of the adverse effects on the treatment, Marcia introduced Elena Siltanen, the resident pharmacist. We are so impressed on her detail advices on the medication or ways to tackle with the possible side effect including precautions. Again another very kind lady who gives warmth and hopes to the patients and walk along with us to fight in the battle.
ICAN is such a wonderful organization with teams of dedicated members who give their selfless help to those in need. No word can I find enough to thank them for their great support during this difficult time.
Three years ago, I was diagnosed with metasticized pancreatic cancer (yes, I am very fortunate to have lived this long, with an ongoing good quality of life). A family friend referred me to ICAN. I contacted them, and Marcia Horn, the executive director, became my advocate. Marcia has been absolutely fantastic. She has given me expert, actionable feedback and advice every step of the way. She is always extremely responsive. She has worked closely with my local doctors. And she connected me to a world-renowned genetic cancer specialist, who will put me on a nonstandard genetically tailored chemo regime when the standard regimes are no longer effective.
More generally, Marcia works closely with experts and companies around the world to facilitate advances in knowledge and treatment for cancer patients worldwide.
Six years ago I was diagnosed with Ovarian cancer. I had never heard of Ican at that time. I spoke to a friend and told him my diagnosis and he told me I had to speak to a lady named Marcia. This was late on a friday night so I told him I would call her the next day. He said no, call her right now. Thank god I did. We spoke on the phone for about an hour and a half. She gave me complete instructions on what I had to do on Monday morning. She gave me the top three physicians for my cancer and told me to get an appointment with one of them. By Monday I had an appointment with the number one doctor that week. To make a long story short I was in surgery within two weeks. I had robotic surgery and was feeling great and on my way to a complete recovery within a few days. Thinking my adventure with cancer was over I went back to my life. Six years later completely unexpected and out of left field I was diagnosed with stage four, Her2+, advanced breast cancer. Thinking I was pretty knowledgable about this cancer business I selected an Oncologist and started chemotherapy. By my second treatment I was near death and in the hospital. My husband , in shear terror called Marcia , told her my condition and said please help us. Marcia immediately got us set up at the #1 breast cancer treatment center in California. As soon as I was able to travel, we set out for California. I ended up staying there for over two months, getting my all my pre surgery chemotherapy and than having surgery. God knows chemo was not fun, but nothing like I had previously endured and I was able to stay out of the hospital the entire treatment time and handle all of my chemo treatments. Today I am in radiation and back in chemo for my Herceptin, but I am able to live a full life. The best news is my tumor is completely gone. The even better news is I have a little hair on my head again. Were it not for Marcia I would be dead today, without a doubt, instead of living a full life with some hair.

When I received my diagnosis of Ovarian Cancer, I was completely stunned and had no idea of what to do next. Luckily a dear friend told me about Marcia Horn and ICAN and at 9pm on a Friday night I received a call from Marcia. After spending an hour on the phone with me she told me the top three Gynecologic Oncologists and exactly the steps I needed to take. I had an appointment with the number one doctor within a week and was in surgery in less than 2 weeks. Marcia reviewed the pathology reports with me and has been invaluable in my care. Marcia Horn and ICAN are beacons of light at the darkest time in a cancer patients life.
I am very grateful that I ever got to meet Marcia Horn, President and CEO of ICAN! As you can imagine, I was very upset when I found out that my pancreatic cancer had metastasized just 2 weeks after I was told that I was clear from cancer. Marcia reviewed my treatment options with me and provided me not only the guidance I needed, but hope and courage. She is very knowledgeable and informative. She responds to my questions any time of day! She is just incredibly amazing!!!
A family member found the Exon 20 Group and ICAN after I was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer in 2018. My diagnosis was, to say the least, overwhelming. After speaking with director Marcia Horn, my family and I have all felt so much better about my treatment options and can’t say enough about the support we get from this amazing group of helpful and caring people. Marcia is an incredible wealth of knowledge and it is so reassuring knowing we have an advocate like her in my corner. Their resident pharmacist Elena Siltanen has also been particularly helpful and so patient with all of my many questions about how to deal with side effects from my treatments, and always has an encouraging word when I’ve reached out. She and Marcia always seem to have answers when I need them most. They genuinely care about every member. I don’t know where we would be without this organization and I’m incredibly grateful for all of their help.
I have followed the work of Andrew Brown Jr. on behalf of ICAN for several years now. He has a tremendous span of ideas of ways to help cancer patient advocacy, and great enthusiasm for moving initiatives forward. He has a special interest in increasing participation in tests and treatments for people of color with regards to research, testing, and treatment, but simultaneously keeps his focus on the total population's exposure to cancer. He and I have discussed ways to work together to advance ICAN, and I am sorry to say that my negligence and distractions have kept us from realizing any of those efforts... up to now. I am continuing to try to find ways to work with ICAN and Mr. Brown.
When I got my prostate cancer diagnosis in 2011, it was just another thing, another difficult addition in a time of marital dissolution, family illnesses, and financial chaos. I had no experience of my diagnosis as heartrending, as panic inducing; it came at a point where life seemed to pile on.
I knew to investigate. I knew to visit as many cancer specialists as possible and to question their recommendations, and to gather credible information about their particular forte.
I did so unto the point of being stuck. I was in paralysis-by-analysis: I had much information and had listened to each cancer specialist assure me that his/her approach was correct while telling me that other specialists couldn't offer me better. All of this information had me frozen in indecisiveness.
A dear friend had lost her husband to prostate cancer a few years before I received my diagnosis. It was only natural that I would share with her my travails. When I told her of all my due diligence and of my being stuck in place, she was dismayed at my immobility. She urged me to call ICAN. She was sure that ICAN could help me find a way forward, and if she was so certain, then that was then good enough for me.
Marcia picked up the phone and began my life saving advocacy. ICAN, which to me *IS* Marcia Horn, helped me out by giving context to all of the data I had gathered. ICAN helped me see that much of cancer care is siloed. Each specialist an expert in her/his universe, is to often isolated from other cancer care perspectives.
Marcia affirmed my research. She instructed me to see a medical oncologist, one who's concern would be the best treatment for my prostate cancer and not necessarily invested in a particular practice's treatment. I was stunned when she suggested me specific doctors here in the Hub of the medical world. She didn't leave me hanging!
Were it not for ICAN, well, I don't know and neither do I want to consider such for too long. Connecting with Marcia and ICAN was the tipping point at which surviving this disease became my reality.
ICAN's investment of its time and expertise in my life to extend, to save my life, has imbued my life with this goal: to help Black, LatinX, and other underserved cancer patient populations receive ICAN's loving, expert, invigorative cancer patient advocacy as have I.
I am so grateful to have found ICAN and the Exon 20 Group and to have gotten to know Marcia Horn, the executive director. Marcia is very informative and has been a great resource for finding leading edge clinical trial treatment options for rare types of cancer like mine. Thank goodness there are people like Marcia and organizations like ICAN and the Exon 20 Group who help cancer patients like me and are also advocating on our behalf.
If my experience is any indication, this is an outstanding nonprofit. Diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in November, I was overwhelmed - as most cancer patients are. ICAN was recommended by a cancer survivor/advocate, and it was incredibly fortunate she did. Marcia at ICAN was instantly available and unbelievably helpful, guiding me to a Portland oncologist with a stellar reputation - someone I would never have known about; strongly cautioning me on a proposed treatment that did NOT suit my genetics, offering information and resources and helping me sort through a massive amount of information. In the months since, nothing has changed; ICAN is always informed, always helpful, always available. ICAN is truly worthy!
I am a Stage IV NSCLC EGFR exon 21 survivor since July of 2016. I was recently referred to Marcia Horn at ICAN through a survivor/friend from our local lung cancer support group. Marcia immediately responded to my e-mail and made herself available on a Sunday afternoon to answer my questions and provide me with valuable 'tips and resources' for my specific situation. She even sent a follow-up message the next day to provide me with potential treatment plans and miscellaneous additional things to discuss with my oncologist's visit later that week. Marcia is an excellent resource! She is brilliant, knowledgeable, compassionate, and tenacious. She has already had a tremendous impact on my awareness of potential future treatment plans, clinical trials, and resources to help me navigate this disease. Her positive approach and demeanor is refreshing and eases the anxiety associated with a cancer diagnosis. Everything about Marcia encapsulates what you would describe as 'the perfect cancer advocate'. I am grateful for Marcia Horn and ICAN. CThuney
I probably don't have much to add and echo the sentiment of many of those here who have had the privilege to get support from Marcia at ICAN.
I will say if you have a loved one or you yourself are recently diagnosed with stage 4 cancer then Marcia at ICAN is an excellent resource for your treatment. Not just to start but also ongoing, especially for clinical trials and the management of side effects. She has extensive knowledge of oncology treatments and a network of doctors running clinical trials she can make referrals and introductions. She will help with complex subjects regarding treatment options and is an excellent resource and sounding board.
She also works in the background with Doctors and drug companies to convince them to make their clinical trials available to those most in need, stage four patients.
I can't recommend her enough. This is not your normal service organization.
Words cannot begin to describe how grateful I am for Marcia Horn and the ICAN organization. When my otherwise very healthy and active mom was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer my family felt scared and hopeless. Marcia has provided support and guidance through this very complex disease. She is responsive and makes herself available to talk or email when needed. My mom was recently hospitalized, when I emailed Marcia to let her know she called me right away. With her I have an advocate with many years of experience and resources walking through this journey with us. She also connected me with Carmi Fazio, RN who is an absolute angel! She also has many years of experience in the oncology world and very willing to help in any way she can. She makes herself available and very responsive to email. She shares her experience and has a way of easing our anxiety or concerns. I could not imagine my mom (and our family) fighting this cancer without their support!
With much gratitude,
Amy
Every organization should have a guardian angel like we have in Marcia Horn!!!!!! There are not enough words to show my family's appreciation. The resources and connections she has given us is unrivaled. We wouldn't be where are in this horrific journey without her and this org.
I can't begin to express the gratitude my family and I have for Marcia and ICAN. I am an She has not only been a great source of information, experience and insights, I firmly believe that the progress I have made is in part due to Marcia, her network and the work she does for ICAN. As is often the case, there are times throughout this journey that are more difficult than others - Marcia has a way of turning those difficult times into optimism and positivity. She has spent significant time speaking with me and my wife, and I know she does the same for as many patients as possible. Her success and the success of ICAN is that she is the ultimate connector, bringing together patients, clinicians, researchers, biotech and many others all have a common goal of eradicating cancer. I will continue to support Marcia, ICAN and the Exon 20 group in anyway that I possibly can.
We can't express enough gratitude to Marcia Horn and ICAN. Her deep and nuanced knowledge, and fierce advocacy have resulted in direct, life-giving results for my wife who is living with lung cancer. Beyond this, her warmth and kindness offer a ray of hope and comfort on this difficult path. Thank you, Marcia. Thank you ICAN.
There are not enough stars to give full credit to Marcia Horn and her work. Marcia has achieved legendary status among NSCLC clinicians, researchers and caregivers, bridging the gap between patients and access to promising treatment options. She is brilliant, compassionate, tireless and tenacious and continues to be a steadfast guiding light for so many of us in this fight. I personally credit my husband's current health status to Marcia's lightning-swift work in connecting us with a top specialist. To say that we do not know where we would be today without her is a gross understatement. She is a lifesaver in the truest sense of the word.
Wow. I don't know where to start. When my 54 year old brother was diagnosed with stage IV Lung Cancer it was surreal. One day he was totally healthy and the next day, he had lung cancer with bone mets. We felt like we were drowning, helpless. His wife found out about ICAN and Marcia Horn. She threw us a life raft, and has kept our family afloat since then. Connecting us to key people and providing resources and education.
I am beyond floored by her responsiveness. To be honest, I am not sure she is human because I don't see how one person can do what she does. But apparently she does. I can not think about this organization without tearing up. My level of gratitude is off the charts. Thank you Marcia and ICAN.

I would also give this advocacy group at least 10 stars. Marcia Horn is a wealth of information enabling patients to have the latest knowledge and options and to have hope. She is quick to respond to any questions and takes the time and effort to help everyone find the best options for their particular situation.
I would give ICAN ten stars if I could. I can not adequately express how much I appreciate Marcia Horn’s advice and support. When the world seems darkest, Marcia is there to offer options and make everything seem more doable and survivable. I am a NSLC Exon 20 survivor and I don’t make treatment decisions without discussing them with Marcia. I honestly do not know anyone more knowledgeable than Marcia on Exon 20. She cares deeply about everyone suffering from this disease and seems to have unlimited time to help everyone as much as they need. She and her organization are the gold standard of cancer support organizations.
ICAN helps in so many ways. From helping patients get connected with the most useful treatment to connecting people with support groups to staying up on all the latest research - this is an incredibly valuable organization.
I am a Web researcher at ICAN,
Very thankful to my friend and my leader who gave me the opportunity to be involved in this great Organization. For me it combines both the volunteering work and research to help the community, develop my knowledge and career.
Thanks to the great help that ICAN provide for the late stage cancer patient.
I will keep helping out in this remarkable family.
I'm a Web Research Intern in ICAN for a year ago . It was a great opportunity for me to be a part of this excellent community.
My experience with this family exceeds my imagination either on the personality level or scientifically one.
It helps me a lot to read and know more about cancer especially the Lung Cancer.
Thanks for everyone in this marvelous organization.
I work in web research
Working with ICAN is my favorite part of the day which compine both medical research and volunteer work,
I had the chance to work with the most cooperative leader who lead me through every single step and reminding me of the value of charity.
In this team I never stop learning and developing myself.
My deepest thanks to all ICan family.
As I reflect on the impact Marcia Horn, President of ICAN, has had on my life, longevity, peace of mind and positivity, options, knowledge, access to resources and my overall health… I am honestly not sure it’s possible to reduce my feelings of profound gratitude to a couple of typed paragraphs. I truly stand in awe of Marcia Horn. She has an innate ability to understand a highly complex arena of cancer treatment options, studies, trials and results…. retains every single detail and then explains what is relevant to each patient… in terms they can easily comprehend! Her decades of experience in this field have proven invaluable to my team and me.
After being diagnosed with Stage IV NSCLC (EGFR exon 20 insertion) it became readily evident that this rare genetic mutation was vastly underserved and needed a spotlight and focus. After forming the Exon 20 Working Group, Marcia was instrumental in helping us ramp up participation on a worldwide level in a very short period of time. We now have brought together approximately 150 experts in the field, as well as every exon 20 insertion patient we can uncover. The spotlight that was needed is now shining bright thanks entirely to Marcia and her team.
Marcia Horn is a truly remarkable person and I am so blessed to call her my advocate.
-Kevin Hanlon
I work as a web research at ICAN for several months. I learn more and more from this experience and I am very grateful to help patients suffering from cancer under this great umbrella.
I am an Advanced Practice RN with over 30years experience and have been involved with the care of cancer patients from not only a provider role but also as a wife and caregiver for many decades. I have advocated for patients in many oncological settings to include Dana Faber, Sloan Kettering and MD Anderson. I became introduced to Marci Horn, President of ICAN in the last two years as I am helping a dear friend navigate the health care system as it relates to his diagnosis with NSCLC. I am thankful for Marcia and the team of experts at ICAN as they have greatly improved the ease of access and awarness to all treatment possibilities, not just those that are mainstream or FDA approved but to include ongoing clinical trials and future trials.
I highly recommend this incredibly valuable resource to any/all patients, advocates and families as we attempt to navigate the tumultuous waters of cancer care. There is no need to go this alone or wonder if/what other options may be available. Marcia and her team work endlessly behind the scenes to help patients achieve better outcomes.
With utmost sincerity,
Colleen Zogby, FNP-C
Marcia and her team are so top notch that I cannot imagine anyone else out there having more information and options available for cancer patients. The work she has done and continues to do is unbelievable in terms of understanding patients and their families as well as treatment plans. This powerful combination is what will one day make Marcia Horn and her ICAN team known throughout the world.
When my brother got diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer, we weren't sure what to do, who to turn to. Yes, we were in contact with the experts in both Syracuse and Boston and they offered immediate treatment options but we didn't sense there was someone one level higher up who had a grasp of the "big picture" as regards guiding my brother in his journey from treatment to treatment. We had come to understand that this was a world in which one treatment wasn't going to be the answer. Instead, it was a world in which a strategic sequence of treatments would be needed. Chemo, targeted, immuno, radiation, etc. This became very complicated and confusing. To be honest, we felt like we were on an island, lacking someone to run the show.
Then one thing led to another and we reached out to Marcia Horn at the International Cancer Advocacy Network. This was a true blessing. March 15, 2017. I have kept my original email to her.
Marcia has many years of experience in the area of patient advocacy and is extremely well connected with the top medical leaders in the field. She has been with us every step of the way, helping us at each decision point, always available when we need help, always working behind the scenes to determine the most promising "next in line" therapy. I have relied on my own scientific research background to rapidly come up to speed in the science involved and have continually teamed with Marcia in the decision making process. She has been wonderful. We can't thank her enough for the tremendous difference she has made in our lives, helping us to remain calm and confident, helping to keep my brother alive.
ICAN is simply remarkable. It does more to help people with late-stage cancer than organizations many times its size. I have seen ICAN and its President, Marcia Horn, help numerous people, including family and friends.
I am honored to have volunteered for ICAN for many years and will keep helping out for many years to come, including at the terrific golf tournament and other enjoyable events ICAN puts on each year.
Marcia Horn was nothing short of a godsend to us when my husband first got diagnosed with an EGFR mutation NSCLC. We had felt utterly hopeless until a desperate late-evening internet search led me to ICAN. I immediately sent an email inquiry through its website, and within minutes I received a "call me asap" reply from Marcia. She was so kind and wonderful to speak with and was an absolute wealth of information, spending almost an hour on the phone with me that very night, downloading me on the treatment info, advances, data, research, etc, specific to my husband's disease. Her information helped validate the treatment protocol that was being prescribed for him, which in turn brought us both confidence in our doctors as well as a sense of relief that we were moving in the right direction. I hung up from our conversation with a feeling of hope that I had not had before. That very phone call made all the difference in how we moved forward with a treatment plan and true hope for recovery.

I have been working as a virtual volunteer with ICAN, and I am also a patient. ICAN is well-organized, and all people I dealt with in this organization are committed to doing excellent work and helping cancer patients. Marcia Horn is always available to help with any questions regarding to find a cancer treatment and/or side effect management. She is a very dedicated, committed person, very quick to respond to questions and concerns.
I always feel her warm attitude and personalized approach, and she is very competent in giving information regarding any of my requests or concerns. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the services of ICAN to the patients who deal with Cancer, as it can help to save tons of efforts and time to find a proper treatment or resolve an issue.
Very thankful for this wonderful organization. Marcia Horn and her team have been instrumental in educating and guiding me in the options available for treating my EGFR Exon20 insertion mutation. I was diagnosed in December, 2014 with Stage 1A adenosquamous lung cancer. Had a lobectomy initially and things were good for just over a year. About 15 months later the cancer had metastasized and I subsequently had brain surgery, Gamma Knife radiation and a liver resection. Each time the cancer had been 'isolated' so surgery was an option. Six months after the last surgery, there was progression and I underwent 5 cycles of chemotherapy and could not tolerate the treatment. In search of other options, it was ICAN that was influential in my decision to pursue a Phase 2 trial in Houston. I started the trial in September, 2017 and after some tumor "shrinkage", I remain "stable" at this writing and actively continuing the trial. ICAN is a truly dedicated and extremely helpful organization.

EGFR Exon20 Patient
I had spent significant time researching treatment options for my husband's EGFR Exon20 lung cancer. I found ICAN through an established connection with another lung cancer caregiver searching for options for his loved one. I decided to contact ICAN to find out what additional information or guidance may be available. It was the best call I made! I spoke with Marcia Horn whom, I knew after speaking with her for 10 minutes, was the real deal and understood where we were in the disease process and that we were hoping to find any and all options that may be available. I had a little knowledge of the existing trials and after speaking with Marcia, I had a much deeper understanding and someone who could answer my questions and provide guidance on which to pursue and when. It is because of Marcia and ICAN that we ended up with a "3rd" opinion and decided to pursue the most promising trial for Exon20 insertion mutations at MD Anderson. My husband is now in his 10th cycle of the trial and we continue to rely on our partners at ICAN, along with our doctors, to help keep us current on any additional treatment options for the rare EGFR Exon20 insertion mutation. Marcia and her team work tirelessly to advocate for the patient. I am very grateful that I made that phone call and highly recommend her and the ICAN services to others. -Paula Hockster
When a loved one gets a cancer diagnosis, the anxiety, the many questions, and the fear can all be overwhelming. The moment we discovered ICAN, that fear and anxiety quickly became manageable. We are so greatful for this organization, and so greatful to have such a caring team member to help us navigate this difficult journey.
I have NSCLC - Stage 4 Adenocarcinoma with an EGFR mutation - Exon 20. I learned early on that I should be the patient and my wife should be my advocate. My wife found Marcia Horn's name on a blog about Lung Cancer. Someone had raved about Marcia and the ICAN advocacy and my wife decided to email her to ask some questions about possible trials and or treatments. Marcia immediately responded and they set up a time to talk on the phone. I was so impressed with the quick response from Marcia especially in today's world. Marcia is one of the most knowledgeable people on the subject of lung cancer and the available treatments. Marcia invests in people and my wife has tons of information after communicating with her either on the phone or in an email. The World of Cancer can be a difficult one, Marcia has been able to share information at a level that is understood by patients. She will guide you through each step and process and point you in a direction that will best benefit you the patient. Marcia has been a Godsend for my family with her wealth of knowledge. She is a kind and compassionate woman and represents ICAN international very well. This company will make you feel like you are important, and in times of Cancer the struggles are real and the challenges heavy, to have this company and Marcia on your team you are ahead of the game. Thank you ICAN!

When I was diagnosed with EGFR, Exon 20 insertion, NSCLC, I contacted Marcia at ICAN to get advice about what my treatment options were. I knew nothing about the journey that I would be taking. I got her name and email address from an online support group. I gave her a call and expected to hear back from her within a week. She called me back within two hours. We talked about current options for me and a trial that was opening up that I may qualify to participate in. As it turned out, I was able to get into the trial. I have stayed in touch with Marcia and contacted her every time I had a question about my treatment.
Marcia has always been positive about treatment options and given me hope. She has also encouraged me to advocate for Lung Cancer Awareness. She has educated me on the importance of understanding what mutations may be in my cancer. With more knowledge about my individual cancer, the more options that may be open for me in treatment.
In the back of my mind, I always know that I have Marcia to answer questions or give advice to me. It is comforting to know that I have someone to reach out to for answers.
I personally would give 10 stars if that were an option. ICAN International Cancer Advocacy Network far exceeds any expectations I may have had. I came across Marcia Horn's name on a blog and reached out to her. She immediately contacted me and we spoke for quite some time on the phone. I felt that she genuinely cared about my husband who was diagnosed with a Stage 4 lung cancer with a rare EGFR mutation. We were at UCLA with my husband on an immunotherapy and had had severe issues and side effects and were looking for information on other options. Not only did Marcia share some options, she made phone calls on our behalf, educated us on the various trials that might be available for my husband and always stayed in touch. She also was able to answer many questions that I had and in a way that I was able to understand. Not only did we feel like we had an amazing advocate we felt that we had made a lifetime friend. I have reached out to Marcia at all hours and was surprised when many times she would respond at what most people would call after hours! Marcia and this organization are top notch and the many people who's lives she/they have touched are beyond blessed.
ICAN has given my family and I strength and hope during a state IV diagnosis. With ICAN in our corner, we know we have the best resources to help us with our journey. We are hopeful and proactive because of ICAN and we are forever indebted to Marcia.
ICAN allows for working alongside renowned experts at the frontier of today's medicine. It is my strong conviction that ICAN's detailed letter of recommendation about me, written by ICAN's CEO Marcia Horn and ICAN's Director of Research Services Regina Marie Klopfer, enabled my offer of admission into my first-choice graduate program. I am also of the strong conviction that their recommendations, with the support of Human Resources Director Andy Young, enabled my job offer as a Medical Coding Analyst at the Indiana Office of Medicaid Policy and Planning. I look forward to contributing what I learned under ICAN as a Health Disparities Research Intern.
For patients and families seeking in-depth and detailed information on advanced (Stage 4) cancer, in all its forms, Marcia Horn, President of ICAN (International Cancer Advocacy Network) is truly an indispensable resource. Marcia and her colleagues at ICAN work on a 24/7 basis to acquire and deliver the most pertinent, intelligent and useful information, guiding patients toward the most promising treatment protocols, whether they are FDA-approved or accessible only through clinical trials.
All questions, from scientifically basic to medically sophisticated, are welcomed and thoroughly answered at a level of complexity that precisely matches the patient or family member. Having collaborated closely with Marcia, I can attest to the fact that the quality of ICAN’s services and information is up-to-the-minute fresh, relevant and actionable. In short, for information and advocacy on advanced cancer, Marcia Horn is at the top of my list.
I am enjoying being involved in the EXON 20 GROUP, co-founded by Kevin Hanlon and Robert Hanlon.

I felt so alone and confused with assisting my father in his battle with cancer. After a few months of navigating the complicated world of our medical system, I was put in touch through a family friend with ICAN. A month ago my family was faced with the difficult challenge of choosing the best option given to us by our oncologist, including different clinical trials and standard of care. With all options there were pros and cons. The anxiety I felt making such a difficult decision was eased by the support of ICAN. The team at ICAN was more than responsive. They provided us with resources, guidance, were able to shed light on certain treatments that were effective or ineffective based on my father's genetic makeup. This is something that our oncologist should be able to guide us through, but the issue is oncologists are limited to the resources of their institution. Therefore, we were limited to the information we received. We sought a 2nd opinion and they also had different options. When we asked them which option they felt were better including the other institutions', we were met with opposition. Not surprisingly, they were unable to provide any opinions on the other institutions' progress or therapies. Cancer is a complex disease and there is no one method or approach. The ICAN team made me feel like I had an extended family for support and guidance. All cancer patients and their families should seek support from an organization like ICAN. Marcia Horn is an incredible person. She is not only knowledgeable and dedicated, she also has the kindest heart. I am so thankful to have ICAN help me during this time. The network of professionals and volunteers is deep and ever growing. I thank all those participating as a volunteer through ICAN. My family is grateful for your selfless acts of service to cancer patients and community.
Working with the ICAN and the Golf Tournament Board was very rewarding. The Liberty Mutual Invitational, benefiting ICAN was a wonderful event raising awareness and much needed funds for ICAN.
I have volunteered at several organizations but ICAN is the best organization I have volunteered at. They are so very helpful and supportive. Marcia Horn is the best supportive person I have ever met -online-. I do recommend ICAN for the cancer patients and also Med students.
I had the privilege to work at ICAN as a research volunteer to search for the cutting edge research related to all types of cancer. I had a great opportunity to get to know Marcia Horn as I wanted to do more volunteering work at ICAN. She and Regina was so supportive to help me out and to choose what I can do. I very much believe in ICAN and its amazing leadership. I am not enough thanking ICAN for all the great help to the cancer patients. I am giving them the best possible review, because simply they deserve it.
ICAN is a wonderful organization in helping so many cancer patients with referral to the best oncologist across the US. ICAN has a lot of volunteers who searches the databases to find the most recent updates on the drugs or the clinical trials. Marcia Horn, the CEO and President is the best person I have ever known who help and support me as a volunteer in this amazing organization. I strongly support ICAN and Marcia Horn and give them the best of the best 5-stars review.
Participation in Liberty Mutual Invitational is the best!!!! Great organization that serves the under and unserved as well as all in need. Needs more funding to support more patients!!!
ICAN mounts first class events specifically the Liberty Mutual Invitational and working on golf events is productive, fun, and collegial.
This is such a great organization - so helpful and passionate to help those in need of Cancer treatments!!

I really believe so wouldn't be here today without ICAN..their advice and moral support helped give me the courage to fight. I'' eternally grateful.
ICAN is an incredible organization because of the extensive and great work they are doing for the cancer patients. My experience with ICAN is a life changing experience. It's wonderful to see how they are very helpful and supportive to the patients and also the research volunteers. I have no words to express my gratitude to ICAN and Marcia Horn.
I love ICAN. My friend referred me to ICAN to be a volunteer to gain new experience and to help the cancer patients. I am enjoying my experience with ICAN. I have worked on several projects with them and it's very good to work with different team leaders to gain different experiences.
ICAN is a great organization and I love what they are doing with helping the patients. I am very supportive to ICAN. I am a volunteer at ICAN and they are very helpful and supportive to their volunteers.
I have been volunteering at ICAN for almost a year and I really enjoying my experience with ICAN. They have a fantastic board who are working really hard to help the cancer patients. I very much support ICAN.
ICAN is amazing they have been so incredibly helpful for my mother. She is currently battling cervical cancer that has metastasized. ICAN put us in contact with the best doctors which are giving her the best treatment imaginable. Without them this awful disease probably would of taken my mother from me. Truly grateful for ICAN I can't say enough great things about them. They are making a huge difference for my mother and a incredible impact on the cancer society. I couldn't be more happy every time I talk to them they make me feel important like talking to family.
I work with ICAN as a volunteer. Its of great experience , lots of help to many patients. Recommended as highly professional organization.
I am studying medicine in Egypt and also I had a great opportunity to be a volunteer at ICAN. So I would like to say it is a wonderful experience and I'm most grateful and thankful to ICAN amazing team and Marcia Horn, the CEO and President. I'm still enjoying my volunteering time with ICAN. ICAN is one of the most greatest non-profit organizations I have ever seen in helping the cancer patients. ICAN has an amazing board who are working 24/7. I am and will be always be supportive to ICAN.
I am volunteering with ICAN for more than 3 years. Very friendly and professional environment with enthusiastic and great people. As a soon to be doctor, my time is tight in medical school and I better invest in it the most rewarding way, I volunteered with many governmental and non- governmental organizations, almost everywhere, online, in Sudan, Saudi Arabia... but nothing could be of more value than the reward of promoting the noble cause of helping cancer patients. I enjoyed my time with ICAN, doing what I like to do and learning new skills and improving what I already have. Great experience. Also, the CEO, the team leaders and members, as well as the admin team, all of them are down to earth, helpful and very kind. I'm leaving 5 stars on my review, I recommend ICAN highly without preservation!
ICAN has been amazingly responsive with recommendations, referrals and options for second opinions as I have navigated the confusing and complicated medical system related to cancer treatment for my mother. It's clear that many cancer patients and families need resources and counsel to seek the best care and clearly understand the options available. I'm sure that many families and cancer patients have found themselves confounded and, unfortunately, unable to get the answers and resources they need before it's too late. ICAN is a service that should be known and available to all dealing with these issues of health and comfort.
I am doing volunteering work with ICAN. It is a great organization and is helping so many cancer patients. They are working around the clock to help as many patients as they can. I love what they are doing and I so much admire what Marcia Horn is doing for the patients. I am a doctor from Egypt. The ALL deserve the best.
A friend of mine referred my mother and I to ICAN to look for additional treatments for my mother’s colon cancer. From the very start, Marcia helped to usher us into the world of clinical trials and held our hand as we walked through options with my mother’s oncologist.
The world of cancer is a confusing and disorienting place; trying to understand incomprehensible medical terminology, available clinical trials for specific cancers, doctor and hospital specializations, and even the steps for seeking treatment is overwhelming. ICAN offers an invaluable source of help and guidance that enable patients to both understand their treatment options and find the right care.
I can’t thank Marcia and the ICAN team enough for the work that they do. Although my mom is still battling cancer, their work provides immense value for families and enables us to sleep a little better at night. Thank you for your hard work and excellent service.
ICAN is an outstanding patient/family/caregiver resource organization. Expert access to medical information that is trusted, respected, relied upon - that is what patients can count on. That is what they need. The CEO of ICAN is a dedicated professional through and through, with outstanding credentials that represent the organization at very high levels, which in turn allows for a very creditable resource organization that patients and families can consistently count on as the "go to" resource for all forms of cancer/sarcoma. This organization will always connect patients with experts regarding a particular cancer related question pertaining to a diagnosis or treatment, or radiologiy study involving the treatment process/monitoring of a patient.
As a cancer survivor myself, I have experienced the confusion, fear and isolation first hand that come after diagnosis. An advocate can (literally) make the difference between life and death. Following my mother's diagnosis with colon cancer, my family was blessed to find Marcia Horn at ICAN. From the beginning, she was our educated, compassionate, knowledgable, objective support system. Marcia made herself readily available (via phone and email) at that crucial decision making time. She advised us on the latest medical findings and trends, second opinion resources and best practices for followup after treatment. It's overwhelming to be the patient or the family member and care giver, ICAN fills a vital role. Marcia and ICAN, I cannot thank you enough!!
I am vikram singh jakhar from new delhi, India. my father is suffering from prostate cancer and Marcia K Horn( President and CEO of ICAN ) guided me in my fathers treatment. I am highly obliged and really appreciate her for helpful guidance.
ICAN was invaluable to my family during my Mother's recent episode of colon cancer. She is 86 years old, with atrial fib and the risks to surgery and possible extreme treatments after was frightening. ICAN and Marcia Horn guided us through the questions to ask the Physician, did investigative work on who was the best provider in OKC and provided a radiologist to view the images and provide a second opinion. In short, they were available to us 24/7 and made a scary situation manageable.
I will recommend and support ICAN anyway possible in the future, this is important work.
Marcia Horn and ICAN have helped so many patients navigate the oncology world by providing resources and time to get the best care in the country. They are able to get access to almost any provider and drug available if that is what it takes to help a patient. ICAN doesn't take No for an answer and provides hope for families that often feel they have no other help or resources by helping them empower themselves through the complicated world of oncology. They need as much funding as possible because it means more patients can stay alive and beat cancer.
We heard of Marcia Horn and ICAN through a cousin, who was working in the medical field, and my husband just took a chance, at the beginning of our journey with bc, and called her cold without any introduction, and even though we have never met her in person, she has been a rock for my husband, as she responds to his every email, with positive information and support. This began in 2013 and he still corresponds with her till this very day. Thank you Marcia and ICAN. from Marilyn in Tennessee.
ICAN is a fantastic resource for patients and a topnotch advocacy organization. I have referred patients to ICAN and they go above and beyond to assist patients in need of resources as they struggle with a cancer diagnosis regardless of the location of the patient. They are well versed in the latest research and clinical trials. They have resources far and wide around the country through their strong relationships with patient volunteers as well as medical and academic contacts. I will continue to refer patients in need to ICAN.
Amazing organization. I referred friend who had Stage 3 lung cancer. This is precision medicine as it was intended to be.
This is a unique and world-class nonprofit which does what (to my knowledge) no other nonprofit world-wide does on behalf of the most critically-ill cancer patients. The tributes to this organization from patients and their families are endless, employing expressions like "you saved my life" and "we will never be able to adequately thank you." Yet ICAN remains scrupulously objective, realistic, and science-based in its approach to helping patients, doing what no doctor does or can do: seek out and advocate the best cancer care and clinical trials available in the entire arena of cancer therapies. The fact that this organization is international and that it charges nothing for its services is truly miraculous.
ICAN allows for working alongside renowned experts at the frontier of today's medicine. It is my conviction that ICAN's detailed letter of recommendation about me, written by ICAN's CEO Marcia Horn and ICAN's Director of Research Services Regina Marie Klopfer, enabled my admission into my first-choice graduate program. IUPUI (Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis) offers translational bioinformatics and other cutting-edge research areas in close association with the Indiana University School of Medicine, and I look forward to contributing what I learned under ICAN as a Health Disparities Research Intern.
I greatly enjoyed my time as an intern and Research Team Leader at ICAN. It was most productive, and the Research Teams are very well managed.
The staff is dedicated, patient centered, and continuously provides "above and beyond" individualized service.
There are simply not enough stars to rate International Cancer Advocacy Network (ICAN) as high as they should be rated! I am an elderly, low-income grandmother who has been recently diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer. It was so, so scary at first. My experience with ICAN has been critical, life-saving, inspiring, motivating, empowering, and amazing! The ICAN advisors have helped me take charge of my Stage IV colon cancer diagnosis. ICAN has a tremendous knowledge base of cutting-edge advanced genetic and other cancer research that even the top-class practitioners in the United States do not *yet* use routinely with all their patients. ICAN has worked tirelessly, promptly, and caringly to help me 1) understand my diagnosis; 2) find the absolute world-class top doctors near my home; 3) introduced me and the doctors to advanced research to personalize my care; 4) supported me *every step* of the way with advice, interpretation of doctor's recommendations, and guidance; 5) provided inspirational, positive motivation to me. I am elated to report that, despite my very serious stage of cancer, and my elderly, low-income status with no other "connections" in the medical world except ICAN, I am making great progress towards curing this cancer! ICAN has helped me access the best treatment possible with their tremendous knowledge base of research and has helped me feel confident that I am getting the best cancer care available today in the United States -- for instance, the advanced genetic and protein profiling that ICAN has introduced to me and to my nationally-recognized top cancer doctors at one of our country's top cancer centers, would not have happened without ICAN's help. I only feel bad that I do not have the financial resources to help ICAN as much as they have helped me. I thank every and any person involved with ICAN -- volunteers, researchers, doctors, employees, and financial donors -- for giving me hope and changing my life. I am so confident in their value that I have been spreading the word about ICAN to other cancer patients I meet, including, tragically, even very young cancer patients. ICAN can make a difference, and I will also support them in any possible way that *I-CAN!*
ICAN is proving to be a leader in the fight against cancer. Working with patients to battle their unique challenges, the International Cancer Advocacy Network has helped countless families take on the task.
Over the past 6 years, I have had the pleasure of volunteering with ICAN and I can honestly say it is a wonderful experience. As Director of Research Services, I have the honor of working with some of the finest and most dedicated individuals around. Without Andrew Young (our Director of HR), Michele Ouellet (our Citation Editor), all of our extraordinary Research Team Leaders and as well as our truly committed Web Research…I can honestly we could never accomplish our goals so each and every one of them is truly appreciated on so many levels. ICAN is a truly amazing organization and it is truly needed in this world.
I have known ICAN for more than 15 years and can speak of their utmost integrity, efficacy and making an enormous difference in the patients and families who are facing cancer challenges. Not only do they have some of the best and up-to-date information but they continually reach out to those fighting this dreadful disease to help them navigate and understand the treatments and potentials to win their battles.
I can without hesitation endorse and encourage this organization as a 'best of the best' non-profits. I could not recommend them more highly.
We have known Marcia and seen her work tirelessly with ICANN from the beginning. She has helped many of our family members when we have needed assistance in the hospital or recommendations for the very best Dr. for any situation. She helped us find the very best Pediatric GI Specialist when our son was diagnosed with EE, she helped my sister when she was in the hospital in intensive care for Sepsis, helped our friend find a top fertility specialists in Phoenix and the list goes on. She is truly amazing and ICANN is essential for continuing to help people with their medical care with Cancer and many other medical situations. Marcia and ICANN are the first place we turn to when we need help and assistance with our medical needs. There truly are no words for how helpful they have been. Thank you Marcia.

ICAN and Marcia Horn have been the first place our family has turned to in several critical health situations. Marcia is amazing with her knowledge of Dr's and specialists for every medical situation that we have had to deal with. She has helped our son find one of the best Pedicatric Gastrointerologist in the nation to help him with his medical condition, pointed us in right direction when our Father was in a burn unit from an explotion, was one of the first to realize and help us when a family member was in intensive care and had sepsis and helped us in so many other instances. We can't say enough about ICAN and personally don't know what we would have done without Marcia and her kindness to always help us. She has been there for us and helped us at any hour and we feel blessed to have someone like Marcia and ICAN that we can turn to. Paula Shapiro
Truly amazing organization! I contacted ICAN for a friend of mine in China. Marcia and Scott provided valuable information and endless consultations. They are very sensitive to cultural barriers and practice differences and was able to put together a panel of experts from US and China to help my friend! I am so amazed by ICAN's powerful network, from cancer researchers, clinicians, to patient advocates. And it is this network of selfless, passionate, and knowledgeable experts who provide hope to my friend that the family and I are forever grateful.
After our world was turned up-side-down with my husbands cancer diagnosis we didn't know where to turn. An acquaintance mentioned ICAN. The information, support, service and attention we received far exceeded any expectations. Marcia responded after hours and on weekends to get us information and help us navigate our way through the confusion. Phenomenal organization!!! Incredible woman. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!!!
Forever Grateful, the Milazzo Family
As a volunteer in a local "Wig Boutique" I am in contact with cancer patients on a daily basis. Many of them have talked positively about their ICAN experience and specifically mentioned Sherry Weinstein as a fabulous resource for them. Her compassion, patience and persistence in assisting them in their quests for knowledge have comforted them and led them to treatments not before known to them. I have personally spoken to her and feel that her representation as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of ICAN is exemplary and that this organization goes above and beyond the basics at all times in order to aid those in need. We all need to support ICAN with donations so they can continue their inspirational work.
When my father-in-law was diagnosed with cancer several years ago, we learned about ICAN from some friends who referred us to Sherry Weinstein. She was wonderful at putting us in contact with the people at ICAN who were able to advise us on how to understand what was happening and what dad's options were. I have contributed to them and would recommend that others support ICAN's efforts.
Marcia Horn and ICAN work tirelessly in an effort to serve those in need. The patients are always put first and Marcia answers all inquiries almost immediately. She and her staff have an amazing amount of information at their fingertips, and can help direct patients very quickly to those that can help them. My husband and I are very grateful to ICAN and Marcia and we are in wonder of all they can do as advocates. They deserve and need more funding so they can reach more people that find themselves needing answers and direction at a time when all seems so frightening and confusing. Marcia and her team are just incredible.
This is what is needed: a place where cancer patients are the "important". Marcia Horn and ICAN are there for you. Present, helping you, advising you, and you feel their help is real, efficient, effective, and caring. I can't and I don't want to imagine this "journey" without her.
I have been aware of ICAN for only the past few months, but I have been truly amazed by the quality and extent of the services this organization provides to cancer patients and their care givers/families. Marcia Horn is a tireless patient advocate who goes far beyond the extra yard to ensure that the patients who contact ICAN get not only the best information regarding treatment options for their particular cancer, but also assist them getting access to the best physicans to treat them. ICAN also is working hard on various legislative fronts to ensure patient safety by ensuring that patients and their physicians will know what medication they are receiving as new biosimilar medications begin arriving on the market in the future for the treament of various cancers. ICAN is also working to obtain further governmental funding for research on rare cancers such as sarcomas. I am glad that my wife introduced me to ICAN and look forward to supporting and working with this organization in the future.
I have been both a volunteer and a seeker of help from ICAN, International Cancer Advocacy Network for about a year and a half. I have been more than impressed with the one-on-one, professional, and highly-educated information, resources, and referrals provided -- and provided now, when I needed it. No waiting rooms at ICAN. You move to the front of the line immediately.
Marcia K. Horn is a modern day Mother Theresa. I don’t know how she has enough hours in the day to respond and interact so personally with each patient or family member, friend, or caregiver who comes to ICAN for assistance.
I feel honored to have been accepted as a volunteer in this excellent organization. I screened organizations prior to volunteering to see how much of the donations they receive actually go to those they serve. Guess what? About 94 percent of all monies taken in goes to patients and patient services. Almost all the staff is like me— volunteer and logging long hours—because we believe in the cause and we see that ICAN is one darned good and exceptional organization.
My brother in law was given a short window to live and I recommended that my sister call and within ten minutes Marcia the president was giving wise counsel they needed to extend his life in a quality way.
Just last month one of my clients mentioned that her chemo drug was no longer going to be available through insurance. One call to Ms. Horn and she is now receiving her medication. Her response was, "Last week we had no hope but this week we have hope."
Marcia Horn is truly amazing and has assembled a team that is second to none.
Marcia Horn is amazing. I sent her an email when I first got her name, and she was back to me on the phone in 10 minutes. Prompt, extremely knowledgeable, and ready any time , day or night, to discuss my brother's cancer treatment. I don't know what we would have done without her. And I'm very thankful she was there for us.
My wife has been dealing with stage IV lung cancer for 3 + years. She and I had the good fortune, almost by accident, to become clients more than a year ago. I cannot really begin to say how much Marcia has helped us - both in practical ways and in many less tangible but perhaps even more important emotional ways. She has always made herself available practically 24/7 to answer question, bounce ideas off, offer advice, etc., etc. , etc. Really this list just goes on and on. She is always upbeat, always positive, and always persistent. They really could use help to raise funds so that they can serve more clients.
Marcia Horn at ICAN, a leading cancer advocacy group, is in total service to her cancer patients. Her personal phone calls were beneficial to our understanding of the process; the medical terms, the tests, the legalities, the doctors and services. We were so surprised when she called us, herself— and spoke with my husband—sometimes for 2 hours, late into the night. She understands the stress, the horrors of cancer diagnosis and she is trained to read medical tests and patient files. She is all action and knows the facts. When predatory cancer organizations stuff their pockets with patient contributions and give nothing to the families, hers is a free service for anyone in need. Thank you ICAN for your dedication and compassion.
Wow, words cannot express my thanks to Marcia Horn & the ICAN organization. I called ICAN on a Saturday morning & left my name & number. Within minutes I received a phone call from Marcia Horn. Marcia spent over an hour talking to my husband & I. I called to inquire about help for my brother who has renal cell carcinoma. She provided some excellent referrals & even agreed to speak to my brother & his wife. Later that day, again she spent over an hour speaking with our entire family. Marcia answered questions & provided the encouragement which we all needed. We have continued to contact Marcia daily & she responds within a few minutes. She & ICAN are amazing. What a wonderful service they provide at such a difficult time in people's lives. Thank you to ICAN & Marcia for being there. We are so very grateful!
When our mother was stricken with ovarian cancer our family did not know where to turn. We heard about ICAN and Marcia Horn. When we contacted Marcia she was more then happy to meet with my family and help guild us through what was happening and what to expect along with some options. Even being over 3000 miles away it was nice to know there was someone great in our corner. I can't thank Marcia & ICAN enough for all her help and leadership.
This is an amazing organization! I have volunteered and worked with Marcia Horn and ICAN for a number of years and enjoyed raising money and making great friends. Suddenly a few months ago ICAN took on a different meeting in my life when I was informed that a close friend was diagnosed with Ovarian cancer. As soon as I received the information, I called Marcia and she went to work and spoke personally with my friend. Never mind that it was 9:45pm on a Friday night. Marcia took the bull by the horns and gave specific step by step instructions and phone numbers. As a result, and due to our fast acting, my friend is now 94% cancer free. The entire process from diagnosis to final results was 3 weeks. Without Marcia Horn and the ICAN organization, my friend would never have received the level of care that she did. Thank you!
There are angels on this earth!!!
I landed on the ICAN website by way of a recommendation from a friend and I had a mortal angel fly in and land on my doorstep. Her name is Marcia Horn of ICAN and she turned our world from Black and White to Technicolor! From out first meeting she went out of her way to make some great suggestions and recommend state of the art ways of dealing with my mom (Pearl) Ovarian Cancer. She helped us line up some good doctors and was always around to help our family to answer any questions we had on the labyrinth of cancer therapies.
ICAN is a great resource and I recommend it to anyone who must face a cancer therapy and is unsure where to turn, to consult with ICAN.
My association with ICAN started five years ago when I joined as Web Research Intern, transitioned to Research Team Leader and now working as member of International Physicians Council. During my time at ICAN, I've been extremely impressed by the program's commitment towards health care and cancer research excellence. Personally, I feel so blessed and grateful to have known and worked with such fantastic team without whose dedication and commitment, the gargantuan task of cancer projects can't be completed.
Not only have I enjoy working with Regina (Director Research Services), I learnt the dynamics of effective team management. She has always stood by me and my team whenever we need her and smoothed many hitches by her unconditional hand of cooperation at all times. Her strong work ethic, uplifting spirit, and wonderful attitude makes her an asset for ICAN.
Another person whom I've really enjoy working is Michèle . She is a brilliant Citation Editor who painstakingly corrects every assignment that is sent her way . She has a remarkable ability to oversee a large project without losing sight of the little things.
Last but not the least, The dynamic and passionate leadership of Marcia makes this Non Profit stand out amongst others. I feel that Marcia is an exceptional leader and a genuinely good person. Not only she brings a keen intellect to all quarters of ICAN, she enhances the ICAN community with her worldliness and humanism.
Because though I have branched out higher, the roots have grown a bit more deeper .
As they say " Even the smallest act of caring for another person is like a drop of water -it will make ripples throughout the entire pond...”
I sincerely hope that our ICAN family ripples reach far and wide and make difference in lives of those in need.

ICAN has been a wonderful organization to work with. It truly celebrates diversity by bringing together people of different cultures, backgrounds and professions at crux of passion : of helping others. My journey with has been amazing as well as rewarding for ICAN helped me grow as a professional as well as person. Being a Research Team Leader,I had an opportunity to work closely with CEO, Marcia K Horn and Director Research Services, Regina Marie Klopfer. Found them thoroughly professional and always there to smooth the glitches for the team members. ICAN's deep commitment towards empowering late stage cancer patients with latest treatments and approaches speaks volumes for the kind of inspiring organization it is. Outstanding Patient care, high volunteer satisfaction and high professionalism makes ICAN a class apart
I strongly recommend and urge to support ICAN in any way you can. It definitely needs more funding so that even more patients can be helped!
I've said it before and I'll happily say it again: in my sixteen years volunteering for ICAN (including about eight years serving as Chairman of the Board), I continue to see miracles happen ... lives being extended with the best possible quality of life. Because of the extremely worthy work done by all those on Team ICAN, I become recommitted - every day - to that team and to those patients who count on us. With day-to-day eyewitnessing of ICAN's small but mighty staff and its more than 1000-strong volunteer base working around the world and around the clock, I am convinced that ICAN is THE most patient-friendly and helpful cancer organization on the planet. With more funding dollars, we would be able to help that many more desperate patients, and if I were to win the lottery, I would put a little away to take care of my family and then donate the rest to ICAN.

As Chairman of the Board of ICAN, I am the organization's lead volunteer and cheering squad for our very small staff and hundreds of volunteers around the world! In the thirteen plus years during which I have volunteered for ICAN, I have witnessed the amazing work done by this organization, along with the gratitude of countless patients and their families. I truly believe that of all the cancer organizations on the face of the planet, ICAN is the only one that actually “goes to bat” for patients and their families … extending lives and improving patient quality of life along the way. Every day, I am reminded by grateful patients that all volunteer efforts and donor support for ICAN could not go to a more worthy organization.
I began volunteering with ICAN 4 years ago and have been a Research Team Leader for 3 of those years. The organization is comprised of dedicated, passionate people at all levels, particularly Regina Marie Klopfer and Marcia Horn who provide strong, compassionate leadership. Every ICAN volunteer, regardless of his or her background, is a valued member of the team. It has been such a privilege to be part of an organization that is a driving force for oncology patient advocacy at every level. ICAN is a truly special organization doing phenomenal work.

I have had the immense pleasure of working with ICAN for 3 years as both an intern and a Research Team Leader. The commitment of ICAN's leadership to serving cancer patients, caregivers, and families is unmistakable and results in a deeply-embedded service ethic that permeates the entire organization. Volunteers at every level are given honest feedback and a network of support that enables them to fully develop and contribute their skills while working within a very diverse team. ICAN strives to ensure cancer patients have access to cutting-edge, evidence-based medicine, and every patient served by ICAN is provided with individualized support to navigate the patient journey. Having cultivated a culture of compassion and an extensive network of experts, Marcia Horn has built an organization with a special capacity to make a profound difference.
I started out at ICAN as Web Research Intern. In this position, I searched online for articles related to Esophageal Cancer. I enjoyed this position because it gave me an opportunity to learn about cancer. Searching for and reviewing articles helped me earn about how cancer develops, methods used to detect and diagnose, how cancer drugs work, causes of cancer and actions a person can take to reduce their risk of cancers. Volunteering for ICAN is also good position for someone who doesn't have the time to learn about cancers, the causes of it, and how to prevent it because it exposes you to the resources you need to learn about it and forces you to devote the time to learn for yourself. The effort you make benefits you and others. Finally, I like the position because it gives me an opportunity to help another person and rebuild their hope. I like the work ICAN does and how it strives to encourage a person at the late stage of their life to hold on, keep trying, and stands with them till the end. It's an organization with excellent values. In my new position, I get to review abstracts collected by other volunteers. The position has helped me improve in my organization skills. I have to keep track of topics assigned, whom topics are assigned, when topics are due, maintain contact with volunteers to check on status of assignments, review, and provide feedback. It helps both volunteers develop transferrable skills that are valuable in the workforce and in school.
I think ICAN is a great organization to volunteer for. They provided beneficial and needed services to people who otherwise may not be aware or have access to free of charge. It helps patients stay aware, become better and informed decision makers so they can become more involved in healthcare they receive or team players with their physicians in treating their conditions. Doctors do not always have the time to do the extra legwork to research a patients’ condition or look at the latest in treatment for their condition. ICAN does the legwork for them so they can also be a better resource for their patients. For the staff and volunteers, it gives them an opportunity to develop transferable skills that help them in the workforce and school. ICAN services and work benefit everyone around the world. It being on the web gives doctors and cancer patients from around the world access to a library of resources in one location that they otherwise may not be able to have access to due to poverty or other factors.
To be able to continue doing their great work, ICAN needs more funding. I hope you can see that your money will not be wasted after reading this and the other reviews.
Amazing organization with amazing people. This organization truly did help me when I needed advice and I needed guidance with a family member who was struggling with the cancer battle. I've been volunteering for this now for over 3 years, and I cannot stress enough how awesome this place is. We collect the most up to date literature on cancers and distribute the information to oncologists, patients, and families so that way they can have the most up to date resources when fighting this ugly disease. With more information available, patients are able to make the best, most informed decisions regarding their patient care, and thus, get better results.
Thank you ICAN!
I've been volunteering for ICAN for about 6 years now (since I was a Junior in college) and it has been an amazing experience. Not only has it been a rewarding experience volunteering my time, but it has been an absolute privilege and joy working for people who are so compassionate and understanding about the cause. Marcia Horn and Regina Marie Klopfer are exemplary leaders and an honor to work for. They make sure you are comfortable in your volunteering role and are very appreciative of the time you put into ICAN. All in all, it's been a wonderful six years and I look forward to dedicating many more years to come.
I've been volunteering with ICAN for the last 2 years and never felt lost! The management is awesome and the tasks are rewarding.
It has been a pleasure volunteering for ICAN, a non for profit organization geared at empowering late stage oncology patients. Having witnessed family members battle cancer and now being in a position to empower such patients is truly a rewarding experience. Many thanks to Marcia Horn and Regina Marie Klopfer tireless efforts in running and managing the organization.
It is a privilege to work Marcia Horn and the rest of the ICAN volunteer team. The work ICAN does is vital to cancer research and advocacy on a local and global scale, while bringing individualized case care to each patient. I am honored to know this organization exist for patients in need and running with the highest of integrity.
It's been two and a half years since I have been working for ICAN as a research team leader. I got chance to work with some of the most talented and dedicated people of this organization, Ms Marcia Horn, the CEO and Ms. Regina Marie Klopfer, Director of Research Services. I communicate often with Ms. Regina for my work and she has been extremely helpful in fulfilling our needs. She is one of the most dedicated, passionate and hardworking staff at ICAN. Working at ICAN has been extremely rewarding as I learned so many qualities from our great mentors. It is a true pleasure to be a part this organization.
ICAN is such an AMAZING nonprofit! I started volunteering at ICAN as a Web Research Intern, then transitioned to a Research Team Leader and now I'm volunteering directly with Regina Klopfer. The transitions between my different volunteer roles have been seamless and I feel as though I am truly part of the ICAN family. From the very beginning, Marcia has been so warm and inviting and Regina has helped me grow and succeed in my volunteer positions along the way. I am so appreciative for everything that ICAN does and could not be happier to be a part of this amazing team that is truly making a difference in people's lives!
I have worked with ICAN for many years, and have seen many lives saved and changed because of their help and dedication to patients. I have never seen anyone go above and beyond in so many ways to help, care and provide the help that ICAN does! Many lives would have been lost without them!!!!! Thank you ICAN for your dedication and services over the years!!!!!!!
Marcia Horn, and ICAN, as I have been told by my Father that they have been an amazing blessing for my Step-mom while she is battling canXer. She was diagnosed in July of 2013 with a breast malignancy, and Marcia has always been there for my day, as the care taker. No time of night was too late to reply to emails of worry that my dad had, and would quickly put his mind at ease. She has been a God send for my step-mom, and also for my dad. Thank you so much!!!!
Marcia Horn, and ICAN, have been, probably my number one crutch in helping my wife and I make decisions while fighting this horrible disease. My wife was diagnosed in July of 2013 with a breast malignancy, and Marcia has always been there for me, as the care taker. Even after office hours she has always answered my emails and been so amazing with her information and help. Especially in the beginning she was so informative at a time when we were scared to death, not that we aren't still, but I was so lucky finding her and ICAN.

What a refreshing and helpful organization ICAN has turned out to be for me as care giver to my wife who was diagnosed with a malignancy in her breast this summer. Without knowing anything about this horrific disease, my wife and I didn't have a choice but to set out on a journey to fight and try to win each day in order to get her health back on track. ICAN has been like a beacon in the wilderness providing information, direction, and most of all positive energy to help us and give us hope as we
are now into the third month of what has been successful treatments. They came at a time when we needed friendship as well as knowledge about what we were facing.
Marcia Horn and ICAN were invaluable in helping me find the right health care provider for my case. To have someone advocate for you - especially with stage IV cases - is so heartening and validating. Thank you ICAN for all you do to help those of us on this often confusing journey to find some light at the end of the tunnel!
Nonprofit organizations in general are a great way to gather community service volunteer hours. However, ICAN is much more than your typical Nonprofit organization. Working with all the members of ICAN for over two years now, I can personally say that this organization, from top to bottom, is filled dedicated, compassionate individuals who share a common goal - improving cancer treatments worldwide.
Marcia, Regina and all the other members of ICAN have spent countless hours helping a tremendous amount of people battle and beat their cancers, and I could not give this company a stronger recommendation.
Cancer can be considered the disease of our new generation, and when I first started working for ICAN I was fascinated by it. Moreover, I was interested in the amount of research going into the discovery of new treatments and cures for this terrible illness. However, what was lost was the step in between research and the implementation of new treatments. While new breakthroughs are coming in at an enormously high rate, there is only so much that oncologists can keep up with and keep their patients informed about. This is what ICAN does, as we serve to educated both patients and physicians on the newest research in every field of cancer.
I am living in the United States, and after learning about them, ICAN helped a friend of mine who is located in Shanghai, China. He has a recurrence of abdominal cancer that has challenged his oncologists in Shanghai. The support that ICAN has provided is so much more than I expected. They arranged to review my friend's case. Because the documents for his medical history were in Chinese, they had an expert here in the United States go over the documents and translate them. After going through his documents and learning about his cancer and previous history, ICAN suggested that my friend have molecular profiling done. They arranged for my friend to discuss this with a Chinese expert who was visiting Shanghai from the United States. My friend understands much better what questions to discuss with his oncologists in Shanghai and how to talk to them about molecular profiling. We hope that he will recover from his cancer. The support that Ms. Horn and ICAN give to my friend and his family is priceless we are so fortunate to have found them.
The international cancer advocacy network is in need of more funding to continue to help more patients as that continues to be ICAN's top priority.
I have been fortunate to work with so many dedicated volunteers over the last two years as part of ICAN’s Research Administration team. I think the most important attribute of ICAN is our quest to always have the timeliest up to date knowledge for doctors, medicines and procedures / trials matched to the patients and families we serve. Most all virtual volunteers rapidly adapt to their assignments from the instructional information we provide and become productive contributors within days of coming on board. The information collected from volunteers goes through a multi-tier process to ensure accuracy and relevance before ever reaching final output for dissemination.
I've been working with ICAN volunteers for about a year and been blown away by the level of commitment of not only the volunteers but the staff as well. All the volunteers questions are quickly resolved allowing the volunteers to focus on their work to help as many patients as possible.
ICAN is a fabulous organization to volunteer for. They are very caring and work hard for the patients. Everyone with ICAN is very organized and helpful and a pleasure to work with!
Ican is a fabulous organization, with great people involved that TRULY care about every person that comes to them. I have referred them to a few friends, and all have been extremely satisfied with the help they received. I love volunteering for this amazing organization, as I know my help will truly help Ican, help others! I look forward to volunteering at their golf fundraiser in just a couple weeks!
ICAN IS A WONDERFUL Non-profit that is truly an advocate for the patient and its family(s). ICAN is exhaustive in their quest to get doctors, trials, support and information to those in need. I believe they are more out of the box thinkers and believe people / patients should not be sent home to die; all avenues must be explored, conventionally and in non-conventional ways. The people I have sent to ICAN have be very appreciative of the respect ICAN gives to each individual knowing that everyone has a unique case and story to tell. This would be a well deserved recognition for this extraordinary non-profit.
I have volunteered for this organization for at least 10 events they have out on. One thing that is so great about this nonprofit is that they help someone no matter what kind of sickness they have. They can get you in touch with the greatest doctors around the country. They have helped countless people with sicknesses. I have referred two cancer patients, and they couldn't have been happier with their experience with ICAN. They are amazing!!
Both my wife and daughter developed cancer. Fortunately, my daughter - who had Ovarian Cancer over 11 years ago - is still alive and well. During her early cancer treatments ICAN was deeply involved and I believe helped save her life. My wife, unfortunately, did not survive her cancer, and though I had tried to have her see the physicians ICAN had suggested, and to follow a chemotherapy course strongly recommended by both ICAN and consultants, she refused.
I have been working with ICAN for over 10 years and believe that it is the most effective and well run cancer advocacy organization one will find in this country. The work they do is phenomenal
I have volunteered for ICAN for almost a year. I considered it to be one of the most serious, well organized and truly devoted to patient care cancer organizations I have had the pleasure to work with. As an MD., I consider my time to be valuable, therefore I'm really thorough about where I spend my free time at. ICAN provides volunteering options for all kinds of professionals as well as accommodating to all types of schedules.
I have been volunteering for ICAN for about three years now. This is my first volunteering experience and it is an excellent one. I work on the Cancer Literature project, collecting and organizing material for other teams to use. I feel like I am helping others but at the same time I am learning a lot. All contact is by email but I believe I am beginning to know the people I am woking with. The work atmosphere is very pleasant. I believe ICAN fills a unique niche in the way they support patients with advanced cancer. I wish they had more funding so they could help more.
I have referred several cases to ICAN all of which have been handled with immediate care and prompt response! They make sure all areas and issues are addressed and dealt with in a professional and caring manner. I have worked with them for many years and will continue to do so for many more!!!
ICAN has some of the most talented, dedicated people I have had the pleasure to work with. ICAN has extremely motivated and dedicated staff passionate about their work, provides truly supportive and selfless service to their patients and has an autonomous work environment.I have had the chance to work with several non profits in the past but ICAN stands out among all of them because of its true leaders like Marcia Horn, president and CEO and Regina Kolpfer,Director of Research Services and other dedicated staff continuously putting their effort to make ICAN better so that their patient would get one of the most outstanding service. My time at ICAN as a Research Team Leader has been extremely rewarding as I learned some of the qualities like motivation, perseverance, hardwork, selflessness, extremely service driven and so on. There is not enough word to explain my appreciation for ICAN. Being associated with such an organization with great mentors is one of the best experience I have had ever.I would recommend volunteering at ICAN because of its greater cause towards the society as well as the support, advice and encouragement you will receive while you are there.
ICAN's adeptness, discernment, knowledge, time, expertise, integrity, care, and ability to truly support with sincerity, adeptness, and unwavering, and inexhaustible dedication, selfless service, and pure hearted spirit to advocate for the most vulnerable, is valued beyond words as a patient. There are not enough positive words to express appreciation for International Cancer Advocacy Network (ICAN)
I began as a Media Relations & Lobbying Volunteer in July 2010 & love it! My most interesting project was a legislative letter writing campaign urging Pennsylvania state legislators to approve equal insurance coverage for oral chemotherapy medicine. The majority of my projects have involved researching cancer articles & collecting media contact information. I studied public relations in college & am trying to get accepted to the Master's program at ASU West. I am in a wheelchair & can't handle a full-time job outside the home. Part-time, paid work in P.R. was too difficult to find. This was the best way to get my start in public relations. I am eternally grateful to Marcia Horn for giving me that chance!
ICAN, the International Cancer Advocacy Network is at the vanguard of cancer patient care. Led by its amazing President and CEO, Marcia Horn, and steered by outstanding board members and scientific advisors, ICAN works tirelessly with cancer patients to ensure that they get the best care possible. ICAN was an early advocate for personalized medicine well before the current paradigm shift towards individualized molecular profiling became an integral part of patient care. ICAN's work with late stage cancer patients is extraordinary, serving each patient on an individual basis, hand holding as they address tough clinical decisions. I have volunteered with ICAN over the past three years as a member of the Biomarkers Council, where we provide scientific expertise in the area of molecular profiling. ICAN also works to implement and advocate for changes in public policy that benefit cancer patients. Please support ICAN today in any way that you can.
I was an advisor on healthcare financing issues for the International Cancer Advocacy Network as well as a Director of research team leaders. Not only is ICAN a great place to volunteer, but they work tirelessly to serve the public. They are experienced, providing creative direct patient navigation and information services with the goal of extending life with the highest achievable quality of life. If you have a diagnosis of cancer they will help you to navigate the rapidly expanding diagnostic and personalized treatment options available to you. ICAN is a great place to start a career and and as always a great place to find specialized options for those diagnosed with cancer.
My dear friend Valorie, did research for me on recurrance colorectal cancer and found ICAN and Marcia Horn. My spirit was lifted to great heights after speaking with Ms. Horn about ICAN and my particular cancer. She actually was on the phone with V and myself for almost a half and hour, explaining in great detail, the various companies (such as Caris) that can assist in helping find the correct chemotherapies for colorrectal cancer, especially recurrance. She helped me have Caris compare my 2004 cancer cells with that of my current case. Caris stated I was getting the exact chemo that I needed from Memorial Sloan Cancer Center in NY. What a relief. I am truly in debted to Marcia Horn and ICAN >>> I will never forget her words to me... We will never leave you alone, we will be with you all the way. How wonderful is that? I am forever greatful. ICAN Phoenix, AZ is excellent. I was terrified and overwhelmed. I went to the experts at ICAN and they helped me with complete commitment, deep compassion and comprehensive knowledge that helped me get through my decision-making process, surgery, and treatments. I recommend them without reservation. ICAN is excellent, professional and fully prepared to help anyone and everyone lucky enough to find them. I thank God for ICAN. Contact them immediately if you need help, you will be in safe, caring hands.
Hands down, this is the place to go if you are suffering from confusion, lack of knowledge, or just someone to show kindness, during your battle with cancer. No other organization came close to what ICAN has done to help me. They are the most committed and kind people that I have ever had the pleasure of talking to. Thank you Marcia Horn and the rest of your team! I love you all!

ICAN is a unique nonprofit that has never relied on media to tell a story. It has solely grown on the strength of word-of-mouth. Marcia, CEO and President, and ICAN’s all-volunteer teams give so much individualized attention that the patients and their families have been inspired to join ICAN as volunteers themselves.
I first learned about ICAN around the Christmas holidays of 2010 via volunteermatch.org when I was looking for a cancer charity where I could use my background in cancer drug discovery and interests in cancer biology. When I finally talked to Marcia in February of 2011, I was impressed by the way things are done at ICAN and I immediately knew that this is one cause (and place) that I can identify with and where I WANT to put all my energy in.
At ICAN, my role is to provide tools supporting the physician teams that handle patients’ therapy decisions. Whenever I am called in to help on a case, I help by identifying possible therapeutic interventions based on published data or scientific logic; identify potential clinical trials; or, sometimes locate relevant experts. I’m not an oncologist. The oncologists/physicians/surgeons on ICAN’s board may use some of the information that experts like me are able to collect and guide the care of patients. I don’t hear much about the patients or the outcome which is a good thing because it also reinforces the sensitivity and need for patient privacy in the current environment.
I also manage ICAN’s group on LinkedIn and post updates on cancer drug trials and cancer biology. I urge you to join and add to the discussions on this group.
I have found so much joy spending time on ICAN’s cause that I wouldn’t be surprised if the last one-and-half years extend to decades of volunteerism for this one-of-a-kind nonprofit.

I have several friends with different types of cancer. My first call on behalf of each friend goes to ICAN. Marcia Horn, executive director and co-founder, has an outstanding knowledge of worldwide resources and medical care to help with each particular type of cancer. She has surrounded herself with the best of the best and has steered me in the right direction each time. My friends can't believe the depth of understanding and specific information that ICAN provides. I have seen first-hand how ICAN has extended lives.
ICAN is truly an incredible organization. The services it provides are unparalleled by any organization of its kind, and the level of involvement, investment, and caring for individual patients has exceeded my greatest expectations for what I had hoped to become involved with. The services that ICAN provides for patients, in what is undoubtedly the most difficult time in their lives, and at no cost, provides such hope. Marcia Horn, CEO,tirelessly works all hours of the day, 8 days a week, to ensure that ICAN patients receive the best possible care to maximize their chances of survival. The volunteer experience is of equal match, as Marcia takes the time to ensure that the volunteers are engaged to their best potential and provides unique opportunities to gain involvement and experience. I can't recommend ICAN highly enough...if advocacy were an Olympic sport, ICAN would win the gold.
I have continued gratitude to ICAN for its role in my late mother's battle with Ovarian Cancer. Although this terrible disease did take her life in May 2010, she outlived her expected prognosis and lived well and happily until just weeks before she died. ICAN CEO Marcia Horn did so much for Mom - from fielding her calls in a sensitive way to helping refer her to specialists. I believe Marcia truly cares. I have been in the presence of other families who feel the same. ICAN is worthy of accolades, grants, and more. I am proud to be volunteer member of its Board and I also consider Marcia a dear friend.
Throughout of my sister- law's fight with lung cancer ICAN was always there with her to explain thing that the doctors did not have time to explain. iCAN was there when ever critical decisions needed to be made. They were always there. Jerry. Binder
My dear friend has multiple myeloma. In her calls to ICAN, she always got more helpful information than she did from her doctor. For that reason and others, she asked her advocate at ICAN to refer her to a new oncologist and is thrilled with the one they referred her to. She really feels that having ICAN at her side has helped her tremendously both medically and emotionally, in her fight against her disease. I am so impressed with what ICAN has done for her that I'm asking for friends and family to make donations to ICAN instead of buying me Christmas gifts this year!
In January of 2003 my sister's daughter Claire was diagnosed with Glioma a type of Brain Cancer. It was a huge tragedy and everyone in the family was deeply concerned. Claire was only 14 at the time. Over the next year many things were tried to help her. I was introduced to Marcia Horn (CEO of ICAN) from Ted Rogers (president of the National Speakers Association in Arizona at the time). When I first talked with Marcia she said to me "We never give up on children!" We became immediate close friends.
ICAN was not involved in Claire's initial treatment, however when all else had not worked, (My sister is a nurse and her ex husband is a doctor and they had many resources). Anyway, Claire was getting treatments for her Cancer but nothing was working. When the time for the Hail Mary move came, ICAN stepped up to the plate and helped get Claire into an experimental program. Unfortunately, Claire passed away just after her 16th Birthday on March 23, 2004. She was a wonderful child with a great future ahead, but it wasn't meant to be.
I have been involved with ICAN ever since then and am on their leadership development council. Helpings others like Claire it is well worth the time.

Since I have been involved in Tango for several years, and have a bit of a creative brain, it somehow made sense to do a show. Currently I am the producer/director of a show called ICAN Tango and will be held on October 20th in Tucson Arizona. http://www.facebook.com/events/385522744843432/
My sister was diagnosed with lung cancer and kidney cancer. I didn’t know where to turn for answers. Another organization was nice, but they just gave me pat answers that sounded like they were reading them from a book. I felt like the person on the phone wanted to get rid of me. That was not the case with ASKICAN.ORG. They were, and still are, my most important resource to deal with my sisters terrible diagnosis. They are like angles sent from GOD!
The International Cancer Advocacy Network (ICAN) is at the forefront of cancer patient care. Led by its extraordinary President/CEO, Marcia Horn, and guided by outstanding board members and scientific advisors, ICAN works tirelessly with cancer patients to ensure that they get the best care possible. ICAN was an early advocate for personalized medicine, well before the current paradigm shift towards molecular profiling became an integral part of patient care. ICAN's work with late stage cancer patients is remarkable, helping each patient on an individual basis, holding their hands as they address difficult clinical decisions. I have volunteered with ICAN as a member of the biomarkers council, where we provide scientific expertise in the areas of molecular profiling. ICAN also works to implement and advocate for changes in public policy that benefit cancer patients. ICAN helped a friend of mine with melanoma, guiding him through international roadblocks and helping him to access top clinicians, and for that I am most grateful.
I have a dear friend who unfortunately has been diagnosed with recurrent colon cancer. I have been desperately trying to get information on where she can go for a second opinion. I happen to be a biotechnology recruiter so sent out a “Can you help” note on some of the life science groups for which I am a member on LinkedIn. Within a few hours I was contacted by a wonderful research scientist by the name of Scott Kahn, who immediately started networking with the many specialists that he knows in the NYC area. Shortly after, I was contacted by the CEO of AskICAN.Org, Marcia Horn, who spent at least an hour with me on the phone to get the facts of the situation so she could find me the resources needed. I now have a clear plan of action, thanks to this wonderful nonprofit that is filled with great people like Scott Kahn and Marcia Horn. I contacted another well known nonprofit here in NYC, and never received an answer. They deserve 10 stars!!!
ICAN is a wonderful organization to volunteer with. I learned a great deal and felt like I made a difference.
When I was diagnosed with breast cancer I immediately contacted ican and they have helped me every step of the way! I truly would not have known what to do if it wasn't for ican!
When we found out that my sister had breast cancer, we started researching different organizations to find answers and help. ICAN was at the top of the list after speaking with a few people about their service! It was a relief to have someone explain the different types of breast cancer, the stage and what to expect. They provided resources, questions to ask the doctor and the best advice was to create a binder with all the patient information to have at all times. Especially when you're at the doctor. They took their time, never hurried us and made us feel very comfortable.
I have been a volunteer with ICAN for almost 3 years. I started out in one our research positions and gradually worked my way from that into Research Team Leader position and finally into my current role as Director of Strategic Planning and Operations for Research Services. I have never volunteered with an organization where each and every one of the volunteers were so committed, so dedicated and so wonderful. I am definitely feel honored that I can be part of organization with such a worthy cause and truly wonderful volunteers.
My husband read about ICAN in the December 2011 Newsweek article and encouraged me to contact them. We had just emerged from several months of intense treatment for metastatic Stage IV breast cancer (my original diagnosis and treatment was in 2006), including emergency spine surgery, and almost eight weeks of radiation treatment. When a Pet scan revealed there was no improvement but actually progression in my disease on hormone therapy, we were both stunned, scared and very disappointed. After a few days of processing this bad news, I pulled up the ICAN website and sent off an email immediately. Within a few days I was speaking to Marcia Horn, President and CEO of ICAN. Our conversation took almost an hour of Marcia's time, while I feverishly scribbled down notes. Before speaking to Marcia that morning, I was feeling terribly anxious and pessimistic. Marcia urged me to join the percentage of breast cancer patients who have survived their odds, suggesting names of exciting new treatments and specialists who would consult with me. Marcia urged me to consider taking a closer, more comprehensive look at my individual pathology and gave me information to follow up with Caris Life Sciences, a state of the art lab in Dallas doing some very exciting work. We are still waiting to determine if chemotherapy is next in line for me, but at Marcia's insistence we are now in the position to determine what might be the most effective step for me. And one that might save my life. I am only 48 years old and have two young daughters and a loving husband and family to live for. The next time I saw my doctor I came with a stack of notes and questions, and now the data of the Caris lab results. I am so grateful for Marcia and her team of volunteers at ICAN for giving me a sense of empowerment at this most critical time of my life.
I joined ICAN with hopes of giving my time to something that really matters, and it definitely lived up to my expectations! Everyone that I came in contact with was enthusiastic about her/his work, and being a part of such a helpful and experienced team gave me great confidence. My Research Team Leader, Aniko, had everything one can possibly ask for in a team leader, and I am happy to have had the chance to work with her! Being with ICAN helped me to gain insight into the world of research and taught me a lot of useful skills for my future. Each member of ICAN is extremely knowledgeable about his/her area of expertise, and I am proud to say that I was a part of this!
I consider ICAN to be a very helpful breast cancer support network. They have taken the time to find information for me concerning a vaccine trial, as well they are looking into oncology services in my area which might fit my situation. I appreciate the assistance of Marcia Horn and ICAN.
After hearing the diagnosis of breast cancer and words/phrases that I did not understand, I called Marcia Horn, ICAN's Pres/CEO. Here brother urged me to call her and I am so glad I did. It was a couple of days before Christmas 2011. I do not remember much about Christmas and New Year's 2011. However, I remember every single conversation I had with her between December 23 and January 10 (and we continue to talk). Marcia's calm and reassuring willingness to share her expertise was our rock until we finally spoke to the team of doctors that are taking care of our daughter. I will forever be grateful to have Marcia explain every step of the way - what to expect good/bad/ugly. Because of Marcia and ICAN I am stronger through this "pink journey," as our granddaughter Nikki calls her mom's breast cancer diagnosis/prognosis.
I am a Research Team Lead volunteer with ICAN's Lobular Breast Cancer Research Team. I really enjoy being able to contribute to a great cause like ICAN. It feels good to be able to donate a little time with an organization that has such a great impact. It has been one of the most rewarding volunteer experiences I have been engaged with!
Because of my niece's involvement with this organization over the last decade or more, I looked into who they are and what they do years ago and have been a donor ever since. I only wish I were wealthy so I could donate more. As a breast cancer survivor myself, I am always attuned to other cases of breat cancer and have referred several breast cancer patients to ICAN over the past few years. I could not be more happy about the effectiveness of ICAN's Breast Cancer Advocacy Programs in extending lives and helping patients to have the best quality of life possible. ICAN makes sure that all options are considered and that no stones are left unturned
in each patient's battle. Bravo to ICAN's patient advocates who make such a big difference to breast cancer patient lives!
I moved to Phoenix in 2007 after being diagnosed with breat cancer & treated in New York back in 2005. In 2010 the cancer returned and not knowing many physicians here I turned to family for referrals. I was told to contact ICAN & spoke with a wonderful person who guided me with a plan of attack with many different doctors. If it were not for the generous help of great people I could not get through this.I am grateful to ICAN for all their assistance.
Previous Stories
When I was diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time I did not know where to turn for advice and referrals. I am new to the state of Arizona and was told about ICAN through a relative. I contacted Marcia Horn & she took hours on the phone & follow up e-mails helpiing me.
I am from New York and did not have the good fortune of having such a great service as ICAN; of course there were avenues to explore through the hospitals and breast cancer centers. It was left up to the individual to find good doctors.
What we need is a better recognition of ICAN nationwide to enhance the tools needed for helping people diagnosed with cancer.
My wife has Stage IV Metastatic Breast Cancer. It can be quite a challenge to figure out the best approach to take in dealing with it. Marcia at ICAN has been very helpful. We informed her with what procedures, drugs and doctors we were using, then advised and encourage us on what we could do further.
My experience with ICAN has kept me sane about a diagnosis that can send one spinning down a black hole because you are totally ignorant when you are first given such diagnosis. You do not think of breast cancer as coming to live with you and when it happens, it is a 24 hour nightmare from which you cannot wake up. Thanks to ICAN I was able to focus on what had to be done. The kind tone of an understanding voice that had answer after answer for me and my family has made the breast cancer diagnosis be what it is. We have faced it, we are working through it, and thanks to ICAN and its guidence, we have our lives back under control. Thank you, Marcia.
ICAN advocates do great work for breast cancer patients! Helpful in all fields, caring, encouraging and information.
My first contact with the International Cancer Advocacy Network (ICAN) occurred in late December, 2011 in conjunction with a diagnosis of Stage 1 Breast Cancer. I needed information to make informed decisions about treatment options. Speaking with ICAN's resident angel, President and CEO Marcia Horn, I encountered someone who was professional, knowledgeable, dedicated, and compassionate. By the end of our phone call, I had a plan of action and hope for the future. I couldn't have asked for a better Christmas gift!
I am a Communications, Marketing, and Design professional who is very selective about the organizations with whom I volunteer because it is important to me to live my values in all aspects of my life. No one at ICAN asked me to volunteer. I offered my skills and time about a week after my initial contact with the organization because a follow-up call with Marcia made it exceeding clear that ICAN is a patient advocacy organization steeped in integrity and totally focused on helping each individual patient win his or her personal battle with cancer. The organization places a premium on providing each patient with the most up-to-date and accurate treatment and resource information for his or her particular cancer. They are sensitive to each patient's situation while also being supportive and encouraging.
So what's it like to be an ICAN volunteer? After two months and literally tons of hours, I can honestly state that being an ICAN volunteer is a totally positive experience! The organization has high standards and expectations as it strives for excellence in every aspect of its operations. Praise and encouragement are abundant. The staff, leadership, and even other volunteers go out of their way to let you know that you and your work are valued. Moreover, you have the satisfaction of knowing that your contributions are making a difference, not just in your particular area of service, but to the well-being and effectiveness of the entire organization and, by extension, to cancer patients residing all over the globe. Awesome responsibility and equally awesome personal rewards
Since 2001 I cannot think of a more important organization doing the work they are doing on an international based right here in Arizona. I lost my first wife to Stage IV colon cancer, and Marcia Horn and her team were all over it trying to help and advise as to weather we were getting the right drugs for the treatment, and if we had the right docs and the right facility to begin with. Sadly, she died because her cancer was so bad, and spread so fast, yet ICAN was always there. My second wife was diagnosed with Stage I colon cancer in early 2011, so of course the first call we made was to ICAN to get advice as to where might be the best docs for her to see, as what what be going on with feedback we first had per the diagnosis. Five minutes later Marcia was on it, and we were on our way with sound support and advice. Science is science, and drugs are drugs which means somtimes things don't get as one would like; however, when you need an advocate-one that happens to be local for us since we live in Arizona-ICAN has been there ---G. Seitts, Scottsdale, AZ
I am a Research Team Leader. I supervise (via email) all the work that several research interns do and review the end product before it is posted to the ICAN website.
I know that ICAN truly appreciates all of its volunteers! They are very kind and responsive to all their volunteers and they care deeply for the cancer patients they support and help. I have volunteered at numerous organizations over the years and this is one of the most integrity-filled and best-run nonprofit organizations that I have every worked with.
I am a certified project management professional and a CPA who has worked at top notch organizations in the business world so my expectations about quality and integrity are very high -- and I can say that ICAN meets and exceed all my expectations.
A few hours a week can make a big difference in the lives of the cancer patients that ICAN helps. All your efforts provide support to so many all over the world. The work can be done when it is convenient for you and ICAN works with you to provide the type of volunteer work that you desire. I would recommend this organization to anybody looking for a rewarding volunteer experience!
I am a member of the public and a sometime volunteer.
I was first introduced to ICAN through their musical events at which the great pianist, Ronald Jacobowitz, entranced and educated the audience. He not only played beautiful classical piano music but gave us background information on the composers their times and the musical developments i.e. early to late Beethoven. Through the people I met at these musical events I learned about the important and wonderful work ICAN is doing.
I have been able to give ICAN and Marcia Horn- ICAN's CEO- contacts to people in Phoenix and elsewhere in the world who have had need of a cancer advocate. They have all reported to me how helpful Marcia Horn has been to them and their families. In some cases they just felt full of despair and hopeless before they contacted ICAN. Marcia helped them see what they could do to help the cancer patient and find the best current medical care. ICAn is there locally and globally.
I found out about ICAN through their salon music programs.
I enjoyed listening to pianist, Ronald Jacobowitz, talk about the composers and their music and then play the best piano music I have heard.
While at the concerts I met other people interested in ICAN.
I volunteered for some office work working with delightful people .
In addition to my selfish pleasure of hearing the music I got a wonderful sense of satisfation when I was able to tell people with cancer about ICAN.
They always called back to tell me how wonderful , knowledgeable and empathetic Marcia Horn, the CEO of ICAN , was. She helped them through very trying times with sensitiviy and expertise.
Ican facilitates cancer patients , who are under stress, to find the treatment center that is doing the the most advanced work in their area of caner.
A friend in Boston called me. She was understandably very tense and stressed. Her grandson had just been diagnosed with cancer.
Her husband was an eye doctor but they were looking for cancer treatment expertise. ICAN , she later told me, was able to talk to them knowledgeably , with sympathy, empathy and care.
ICAN has been very supportive to both patients and their families. A case that I personally witnessed was with a fellow T.B. who came to ICAN in his final days! Both he and his wife were in severely depressed. A friend told me that his wife was furious with the world and would not cooperate. Her husband T.B. was very impressed Marcia Horn and thankful for the help he received..Marcia met with the wife and after a few meetings she became very supportive. After T.B. died Marcia and his wife continued to meet and she has beome a volunteer! There just is not enough time in the day for Marcia, she even recruited me to participate in an ICAN project for which I need to make the time! With her example, I will. Eugene B. Shapiro.
I fit many chairs as I am a retired physician who, in the course of volunteering for ICAN (International Cancer Advocacy Network), has also served on the Board and as Chairperson of its Medical Advisory Council.
Over the past 10 or so years I have developed great respect for the organization, especially its CEO, Marcia Horn. Her knowledge of the intricate, complicated aspects of cancer and dedication to assisting laste stage cancer patients acheiving the best hope of survival is unmatched. The one-on-one personal contact with cancer patients or family, and the review of their medical records and treatment is not dupicated anywhere that I know.
What ICAN needs is more money and more staffing so that it can expand serving more patients in great need of this vital service.
My time as a Web Research Intern has been incredibly fulfilling. I've learned so much about cancer advocacy and even medical/scientific aspects of cancer simply by compiling research and literature for ICAN's resource project. Also, the communication between volunteers and the supervisors and executives is extremely efficient and quick. It's impressive!
Volunteering for ICAN has been one of the richest and most rewarding experiences in my long career as a cancer researcher. I was searching for an organization that would allow me to give back to the cancer community in a meaningful manner. What can I say! Volunteering for ICAN has surpassed even my wildest imagination. Their passion, enthusiasm, and total commitment to helping people with cancer just encourages one to want to do more. The team leaders and off course, Marcia are some of the most dedicated people around. Communicating with them all has been such a pleasure. There is no stress, just encouragement and a willingness to listen to ideas. I endorse this organization wholeheartedly.
I came across ICAN's website when I was looking for meaningful volunteer work to do before starting my graduate program. It has been amazing ever since and I can't imagine ever leaving! The assignments are fulfilling and the entire team is incredibly friendly and cooperative. Marcia (CEO+President) works day and night and is always willing to lend a hand. It's good to know that the effort I put into this role helps people who have no hope in finding help: late-stage cancer patients. I highly recommend volunteering for ICAN.
I thoroughly enjoy volunteering for ICAN. I learn a lot from my research and it feels wonderful to be contributing to such a great cause. The organization has excellent communication, which helps to keep me up to date and answer my questions quickly.
I am proud to be a Founding Trustee of ICAN and to have underwritten the first paycheck of its CEO, the first IRA bequest, the first corporate donation, the first matching funds donation, and the first Will and Trust beneficiary clause. I have been involved with the organization since day one. Most of the members of our ICAN boards and councils have witnessed some of the desperation of the cancer patients who first call our office in terms of the uncontrolled sobbing and anguish of patients’ family members. And we have also witnessed the euphoric relief at the end of that first conversation that they’ve finally found an organization who will never let them down and which will chart out strategic options for them that their first medical team overlooked. Personally, I have referred cases to ICAN, ranging from lung cancer to bladder cancer to mantle cell lymphoma to rare brain tumors to benign tumors. I even refer cases outside the cancer area when no other organization has a handle on the patient's diagnosis.
No one has named or identified any other organization that does what ICAN does, and many of our patients initially had sought help from multiple cancer organizations--whether nationally known breast, lung, myeloma, brain, pancreatic, melanoma, leukemia and lymphoma, colon, prostate, or thyroid organizations to name just “the majors.” The telling tribute to us is that our patients stay with ICAN for the duration of their battle or recovery. One Ohio patient, who had been written off as a hopeless case six years ago, recently e-mailed ICAN that her latest scans showed the much-coveted “No Evidence of Disease” status. ICAN had played a huge role in outlining the strategic options she chose in her battle for life and in encouraging her to choose the combination chemotherapy that ultimately has prolonged her life.
What a great idea for a nonprofit...international advocacy for all cancer patients. I hope to learn more about you.
I was diagnosed with Malignant Melanoma in January 2011 and underwent a full node removal under the arm in February. During the recovery period I was faced with many options regarding which clinical trial I could partake in, this is where I was introduced to the ICAN service. From the moment I contacted them I knew I was speaking to a team of people that really did understand what I was going through and the many decisions I was faced with. ICAN provided me with the most up to date research and analysis and we discussed many different options. Their guidance was 1st class and gave me the reassurance that I was so much in need of.
I wouldnt hesitate to recommend the services of ICAN, they really do put the client/patient first with the care an attention that is so greatly needed when dealing with Cancer.
I had the privilege of serving on the board for several years and got to see first hand the amazing service this Org provides and the niche it fills. i continue to be a strong supporter and donor. I never hesitate to let friends and family know of their fine work particularly if they are in need of counsel on their health situation. Several of my friends are alive today do the the careful, conscious advice provide by their amazing team. THere is tremendous need for a resource in later stage Cancer cases and i know of no other i could turn to that will provide true options like ICAN.
I found the “The International Cancer Advocacy Network (ICAN)” when I was first diagnosed with Stage 4 Melanoma. My doctors gave me 6-9 months to live and offered me palliative treatment. No one even mentioned clinical trials. In my desperation I searched for my own treatments and found Marcia at ICAN. Together ICAN assisted me in connecting to trials, and on some occasions even telephoning them to find out why it was taking so long to get back to me. ICAN knows time is precious and we don't have time to waste waiting....
ICAN also assisted me in researching and finding the most recent immunotherapy/drugs available, researched types of surgeries and pushed me to move forward in times I faltered. I needed support and they provided that, as professionals and as friends I could rely on in my times of distress. I am currently diagnosed as stage 4 melanoma and NED (No Evidence of Disease). I have been NED for 15 months. In June 2009 I was told I would be dead in 6-9 months...ICAN helped me make the life altering decisions that I can honestly say gave me life! I'm still standing and I am still here!!
My sister was a stage IV patient that was involved with ICAN. I can't even begin to tell anyone what a great resource this group was for her in her time of need. They not only helped us to interpet a multitude of medical information but also offered suggestions, alternative options and were able to give some idea of the effects of these treatments.
The ICAN team bent over backwards to be supportive in every way possible and really took a personal approach to my sisters care and well being!
I cannot thank them enough!
I was diagnosed with two cases of Cancer simultaneously: Melanoma & Esophageal.
ICAN connected me with a MOHS (I never before even heard of MOHS) surgeon who removed the Melanoma. Now, unless I point it out, no one even sees the scar on the middle of my forehead.
ICAN connected me with a Medical Oncologist and a Radiation Oncologist.
Now, quarterly PET/CAT & Endoscopy find no evidence of Cancer in my esophagus!
Marcia & ICAN were extremely instrumental in assisting my sister who had stage four lung cancer. Marcia is considered to be a hero to our family! She gave my sister direction & hope during her final year of life. Words cannot express the gratitude we feel for ICAN & Marcia. My sister was so happy to be involved with such a great organization.
Volunteering for ICAN these past two years has been a wonderful experience for me and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. As the Director of Research Team Leaders, I can say that I work with what I consider to be some of the finest and most dedicated virtual volunteers in the world. Each and every one of our volunteers works so hard to further help us obtain our truly worthy goal of prolonging our patient's life with a high quality of life .
When my Dad was diagnosed with amyloidosis, we didn't know where to go for information because it is so rare. We were referred to Marcia,
who was wonderful about providing insight into the technical aspects of
the disease and confirmation that we were proceeding with the proper treatment.
I DON'T KNOW WHAT WE WOULD HAVE DONE WITH THE HELP AND COMPASSION WE RECEIVED FROM MARCIA HORN AND ICAN!!! WE WERE IN CRISIS MODE WHEN WE RECEIVED OUR DIAGNOSIS AND MARCIA WAS AMAZING...SHE WAS ABLE TO INFORM US AND GET INFORMATION TO OUR FAMILY THAT HELPED US GET THROUGH A VERY DIFFICULT AND EMOTIONAL TIME....ICAN NEEDS TO BE RECOGNIZED FOR ALL THE GOOD THEY DO FOR FOLKS LIKE US. HOPEFULLY THEY WILL RECEIVE THE DONATIONS THEY NEED TO REACH EVEN MORE FOLKS IN NEED OF THEIR SERVICES!
It is comforting to have an independent viewpoint and a resource to get questions answered. This organization does this with such compassion. Amazing. Thank you for all that you do. You touch the lives of so many people. We are so very grateful.
I have been working as a virtual volunteer with ICAN for a few months now and it has been a wonderful experience. Everyone I have worked with and communicated with has been kind, helpful, and professional. They are extremely well-organized, and everyone is clearly very committed to doing good work and helping cancer patients. The work I have been doing has involved researching journal articles online, which has been ideal work for me since I am a writer and editor who does a lot of internet research for my day job. Virtual volunteering for ICAN is great if you like flexible work that you can do in your free time.
Ican and Marcia Horn are a unknown blessing that more people should know about when it comes to health needs. We have turned to Marcia Horn two different times for help. She will bend over backwards to help you 24/7, whether at work or at home. She has a knowledge of the best professionals and doctors in the Phoenix area for all health situations.
Our two particular situations were MRSA and Drug INTERACTION, she was there for us on both cases and very helpful. Sondburgs
I am an unusual reviewer for any nonprofit because I have worn virtually every hat that one can wear in any nonprofit organization.
I started out as a volunteer for ICAN (its former name was IFADD) in 1996 and volunteered at all of the special events that ICAN has held since.
My wife and I became vendors and donors of ICAN and sold art at various ICAN events.
I have also served on the staff and in senior positions on the IFADD/ICAN boards. I never dreamed that I would be an actual patient
of the organization's, but I became a patient in 2006 when I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. ICAN was the only member of my team
that predicted I would have pancreatic cancer based on their review of the biopsy findings which had been inconclusive to everyone except ICAN which understood right away the significance of some of the findings. Everyone else thought there might be a structural problem but no cancer. So ICAN, by urging me to get surgery as soon as possible, saved my life. They saved my life again when I recurred with thoracic metastases and counseled surgery.
I remain disease-free thanks to ICAN's constant advocacy services, life-saving information, and moral support throughout.
I have been a pancreatic cancer survivor for six years as of next month.
At every step on my journey, at every turning point, I have been able to rely on the no-holds-barred advocacy services of ICAN.
I have seen up close how this organization wastes nothing and operates on a shoestring yet produces more work than organizations with tens of millions of dollars in the bank. I have seen how ICAN staff with total devotion concentrate on Patient Services, morning, noon, and night, with a work ethic
and a level of productivity that would astound any observer and which leave all other nonprofit organizations frankly in the dust.
If you support any cancer organization, and if you support the strongest possible War on Cancer, I urge you, on behalf of patients like myself, to support this Great Nonprofit. If there is any organization that can help get the majority of cancer patients into stable disease or partial or complete remission, it is ICAN, and they can also help you achieve the highest possible quality of life. I have seen ICAN from every possible vantage point: from the Patient side, the Board Governance side, the Staff side, the Volunteer side, the Vendor/Donor/Supplier side, and this is a nonprofit that operates with the highest integrity and the highest possible productivity and results-oriented and highly energized work environment. This is a very exciting cancer organization to support and to see grow to the next level of accomplishment. Please join me by generously donating what you can and by remaining a donor year after year.
Wow! Talk about being available, compassionate, informative, and a ray of sunshine during a dark hour! Thank you for the blessing of your thoughts, ideas, and resources for my family and me.

ICAN WAS EXTREMELY HELPFUL TO ME AND MY FAMILY DURING OUR DIFFICULT TIME WITH CANCER. THE GREATEST ACCOLADE I CAN GIVE IS THAT ICAN IS ALWAYS AVAILABLE TO HELP.
ICAN 's willingness and ability to assist cancer patients who are in dire situations is absolutely amazing. Marcia Horn , the head of ICAN, has provided extensive support to two of my dear friends, one of whom has mutiple myeloma, and another with head and neck cancer. In both cases, she has used her research expertise and vast knowledge of medical facilities and physicians who are top-notch innovators in their fields to provide my friends with detailed, relevant, and urgently needed information on seeking the best treatment for their cancer. In addition, she has been an advocate when they needed an assertive, knowlegable ally in order to receive prompt, appropriate care. Marcia Horn and ICAN are priceless! They have prolonged the lives of these patients while allowing them to maintain a quality of life that has permitted each of them to achieve a few more of their life goals and fulfill dreams they had believed were impossible after the diagnosis of cancer.
I am absolutely amazed with Marcia Horn and ICAN. My husband is in a late stage of Melanoma skin cancer and is currently going through treatment. We could not have felt more comfortable with the treatment options given to us if it wasn't for Marcia and her team. She is so quick to respond to questions and concerns we have and immediately makes us feel more comfortable about navigating through this deadly disease. I highly recommend ICAN to all cancer patients.
Five years ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer and as often occurs encountered a number of difficulties. I was not sure what direction to take but knew it is important to learn and take initiative as said in Sun Tzu.
"In difficult ground, press on.
In encircled ground, devise stratagems.
In death ground, fight."
I am happy to say that with ICAN, an amazing organization, and with the great resources and assistance from Marcia Horn, the cancer has not returned! Marcia Horn was my expert in defining an amazing oncologist and other areas of direction. I offer my appreciation to her and ICAN and hope that we will never lose their support and direction.
I have had the honor of working alongside and at the direction of Marcia Horn for some time now. It is simply not possible to be near her and to personally observe the hope and education that she gives those in desperate need, without wanting to help in any small way that one can.
It is not easy to understand Marcia. I have never been close to anyone that did not have a hidden agenda to meet some personal need(s). To graduate at the top of her class at Stanford Law School opened a multitude of doors for personal gain. Instead, Marcia appears to have given her complete life to serving in areas where she sees a great human need not being competently addressed by others. As one example of her selflessness, she is always available, day or night. Her energy level is almost super human.
Marcia’s personal knowledge surrounding cancer (including new developments) is astounding. She is so respected in the medical community that she is on a first name basis with many of the top cancer physicians in the United States.
The big gift that Marcia passes out freely to all in need is hope. I have observed families in despair do a total attitude turn-a-round after just one phone conversation with Marcia. Moreover, she combines being factual with compassion. Patients and families alike truly come to understand what the situation is and what the future could hold. Marcia does not practice medicine, but she is the best coach one could have. She is truly a five star human being.
I am an orthopaedic surgeon and when my dad was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer I was lost, all my years of medical training had not prepared me for this. Marcia Horn and ICAN were amazing, not only did they provide us with up to date info on the latest studies, but they were also both uplifting and yet realistic at the same time. I often found them to be more upto date than my fathers own oncologists! I was so impressed by them that I have referred both friends and patients to this group.
I am a friend of a person who has received outstanding support from Marcia Horn's support group. With Marcia's knowledge and experience battling this horrific disease(cancer) my friend has gained her own confidence in her struggle and eventual win in this battle.
No matter what time of day Marcia was contacted she was there to give advice, understanding and personal support at a time when my friend was depressed and frightened, not knowing where to turn for help.
Marcia's organization is serving a very valuable need to very needy people. I applaud her and her group and all their devotion to assist all people finding themselves in this situation.
I first learned about ICAN while volunteering at an event in 2007. I asked ICAN to help my girlfriend who was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer. They helped her get into a clinical trial, and she is here with us today because of it. I am now going through testing for leukemia and ICAN has been an invaluable resource in helping me find the right doctors.
I first learned about ICAN in 2005 through a family friend. I was immediately interested in ICAN's mission to assist and empower cancer patients who may not be aware of their treatment options. I got in touch with Marcia, who allowed me to work as a volunteer. During my time as a volunteer, I have helped to recruit and manage interns for the organization, and I have assisted in planning fundraising events. I have also had personal experiences with ICAN, as some of my friends and family members have consulted ICAN with regard to their cancer treatment. ICAN's fundraisers are always impeccably executed. They are truly events to remember. More importantly, the quality and consistency of the assistance Marcia and her team provide to patients is unlike anything I have observed at any other non-profit organization. "Devoted" doesn't even begin to describe it. I cannot rate ICAN highly enough.
Dear all, I have contacted ICAN and Marcia Horn a few months ago when we found that my mother has lung cancer. The next day Marcia wrote me an email with many usefull information I could use about the treatment options, analysis, doctors etc. Ever since, I know I can contact Marcia and Ican for any questions I might have and receive a few hours later the answers I needed. Their activity is really amazing and a real help for us.
Thank you so much for everything you do for the patients and their family!
My husband Don was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer when he went in for hip replacement. It was devastating news. Then we heard about ICAN and connected with Marcia Horn. She helped us navigate the reports, kept us apprised of new developments, held our hands and acted as our cheer leader at all times of the day and night. Eighteen months later Don is still going strong and ICAN's positive "you can do it" attitude has made all the difference in this fight.
I was at work when I got the news - my breast cancer had returned to my spine and I was now Stage IV. The Doctors did not give much hope and told me only 16% survive past five years. My girlfriend volunteered at a Jewel of the Ball fundraising event ICAN was holding in 2006 and she decided to volunteer. Little did she know it would change my life.
ICAN called me the very next day at work and reassured me we were going to fight this and it was not gloom and doom. They immediately went into action and referred me to a doctor who helped save my life. I am now in remission over six years and although they won/'t use the word cure, I know I wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for this organization. They truly are the remission coaches of the cancer world and have my support and trust forever.
I reached out to ICAN earlier this year when my father was diagnosed with Stage IV Melanoma. Since we were new to the cancer world, we didn't have much knowledge about the cancer or what all of the treatment options out there meant to us. It was so very scary to us and how could we trust 1 doctor to make the right decisions for my father. I explained all the options we had in front of us to Marcia Horn and she right away eased all of our concerns and worries. We felt good about choosing a treatment plan appropriate for my father after speaking with her. She is extremely knowledgable and was able to provide so much information to us about the drugs, their side effects and effectiveness. She is truly dedicated and always has you in the back of her mind.
Hi I'm Jay C. 38 years old from Cavite, Philippines and I'm one of the lucky cancer (testicular cancer) patient who was readily been assisted by Ms. Marcia Horn. She is a jewel for us who has cancer. She helps us in all the steps to undertake to make us prepared for the challenges ahead. She also makes good advises and serves as my 2nd opinion that guides me well in my cancer treatment. I couldn't thank you more and we are lucky to have and know you.
Keep up the good work and God bless you always. More power!
As the parent of a cancer patient, our family is so grateful that there is an ICAN and a Marcia Horn. ICAN, thru the unbelievable efforts of Marcia Horn and her dedicated advisory board and volunteers, is there every step of the way to help when others say there is no hope.
They provide the gold standard for an organization! They are there to help, encourage and give one hope during your darkest days and nights.
We pray that ICAN and Marcia Horn flourish in the years to come and that the day will come that we will no longer need the services of this wonderful organization and it director and volunteers. I know she will cheer along with everyone who works so tirelessly to see that day come to fruition. WAY TO GO ICAN
ICAN is an amazing organization. You have the benefit of working from home and having a great resource in Marcia Horn available to you. Marcia makes certain to provide assignments that are rewarding (based on your interests) and that will help develop your skills. It was my privilege to have volunteered with ICAN and I encourage others to do the same!
In November of 2008, my wife was battling late stage cervical cancer. We were at MD Andersen in Houston being evaluated for a clinical trial when we receieve a referral to Marcia Horn, CEO of ICAN. The person providing the referral told us we could contact Marcia "at any time of the day or night." We were very concerned about our options given the stage of my wife's cancer. We had more questions than we had answers and time was not on our side. Marcia was an incredible savior helping us navigate the plethora of information available while guiding us to an oncologist with unique expertise. Over the final 5 month's of my wife's life, I must have had two dozen or more phone conversations with Marcia. It was not unusual when checking my emails first thing in the morning to have emails from Marcia that were written and sent at 3am. Where can you find such dedication and advocacy? Sadly, my wife lost her battle April 2009. Of my many wishes, I wished we would have been referred to ICAN a year or two earlier. Maybe, just maybe I would still be married to the woman of my dreams.
Since retiring, I have chosen to give back by helping non-profits upgrade their web presence. I started working with ICAN in March of 2009, and I have spent more time with ICAN than any other of the non-profits I work with. This is not because they are difficult to work with -- far from it! Marcia Horn and her cadre of dedicated staff are friendly and appreciative of the volunteer help they get. I spend the time I do with ICAN because of the unique work that they do. There is no other cancer-related organization that does what ICAN does, and I can think of no other organization as worthy of the time I can give them.
Marcia Horn is the expert when you don't know where to go. She knows all the best oncologists and surgeons and is up to date on the latest trials. Her services are needed as she will be the one to help find a cure for this horrific disease.
Marcia Horn could not be more helpful with resources and help than anything. I was referred to this organization from another client that knows my sister and am very thankful. I email Marcia every time I need assistance and receive a reply within 2-12 hours each time, which is comforting. I appreciate their assistance each and every time as I know they are very strapped for cash and help. Thanks for allowing me to review International Cancer Advocacy Network and give them 5 stars.
