Review for ICAN, International Cancer Advocacy Network, Phoenix, AZ, USA
In 2012 I was speaking to a good friend about doing something to "give back" to a cancer or human rights organization. Knowing how much I liked to "write" that good friend told me about ICAN. My good friend, Sherry Weinstein, is the Board of Trustees Chair and told me about the wonderful things ICAN and Marcia Horn do for cancer patients and their loved ones. As the parent of a cancer survivor I was delighted to be able to do something - even though it was only writing thank you notes and letters to donors and, occasionally making bank deposits and sending receipts for those deposits. Much has been written about Marcia, who is truly an angel on earth bringing hope to and advocacy for cancer patients in the U.S. and across the world. I'd like to also send kudos to my friend Sherry who, as board chair, is responsible for grant writing, fund development, institutional advancement, board governance and compliance issues, strategic planning and a myriad of other duties. She deals with so much in an eloquent and calm way. My job, and the job of my "co-writer," Donna Stone, is a very small part of what ICAN and its volunteers do on a daily basis to ensure that cancer patients (and their loved ones) have a way to fight for their lives as they face a terrible foe. We all pray for a day when deadly cancers are treatable and manageable illnesses. Because of ICAN this prayer has a hope of becoming a reality. Thank you so much to Marcia, Sherry and everyone associated with this incredible organization. I am proud to be a small part of this group.
