Humanities West enlightens audiences by exploring the arts and culture of fascinating periods of history and amazing people. Each weekend includes several lectures and performances that bring to life a specific time, place or person, with lecturers, singers, instrumentalists, actors, and dancers from around the world. The places explored include ancient Greece, the Roman Republic, Byzantium, medieval Paris, the Qing Dynasty, Renaissance Florence, Versailles, the Mughal Court, turn-of-the century Vienna, the Harlem Renaissance and Paris between the wars. Some of the people whose lives were explored include Verdi, Mozart, Beethoven, Leonardo da Vinci, Genghis Khan, Marco Polo., Jefferson, Rembrandt, and more. Audience members say they come away from these weekends with a broader understanding of history and the arts, and a desire to learn more.
