I am deeply grateful to the Hebrew Free Loan of San Francisco for the incredible support they've provided me during a pivotal time in my life. In November 2023, they lent me $17,000 interest-free, which allowed me to pay off my credit card debt and improve my credit score by over 150 points. That financial breakthrough made it possible for me to rent a home for myself and my child after a divorce.

Then, in May 2024, they extended another interest-free loan of $20,000, enabling me to purchase the car of my dreams — a safe, reliable vehicle for my weekly commutes to the Bay Area.

HFF has a very efficient process to apply for a loan. Everything is implemented online (docusign, file upload, etc). The process takes 2 weeks or so since an initial application till the moment money get to the account. The representative was very helpful and nice. During an initial interview I was explained how the whole process works. I found out about HFF from friends, and I highly recommend it.

We are a less than three year old small non-profit and was able to get a $50K loan to take the leap in hiring our first employee during a critical time in our business's growth. Hebrew Loan makes peoples dreams a reality. My sister and I first received an HL in 2020 when we bought a home together. We were granted the first time homebuyers loan which allowed us to do much needed maintenance on our newly purchased home. Without the upfront cash from HL we would not have been able to complete these maintenance projects which were crucial. Being able to get a loan for a large sum of cash without needing to worry about accruing more and more interest as we worked to pay it back was a tremendous help for us and such a relief.
I went back to HL four years later and applied for their student loan as I began graduate school. Once again they made the process smooth, simple and personable and I was again, granted the loan. Receiving a student loan without interest as I began graduate school was once again a huge help and relief.

I wish I could give 100 out of 5 stars! Hebrew Free Loans has been incredibly generous over the past couple of years. I’m so deeply grateful for the help that they provided in helping me secure not one, but two loans over the past decade (each for very different purposes).

I first reached out to them for assistance with my tuition as I pursued a graduate degree at Tufts in mechanical engineering (with a focus on renewable energy systems). After finishing my degree, I moved back to SF for a job and needed to buy a car to commute to work.

Now that I have paid off the first loan, I thought I would reach out to HFL again in the off chance they could help me with the first big purchase of my life (i.e., a car). I’m so deeply grateful for the help that HFLS provided in helping me to secure a loan. When I was accepted to study my masters degree, the cost for the year seemed like it wasn’t a possibility. Having heard of Hebrew Free Loans from a friend I reached out to ask if there was any chance they could assist in anyway. She was completely empathetic, took her time to understand my situation and did her best to then support me in the best way they possibly could.

I've been a huge fan of HFLA for the last 30 years! My father of blessed memory was a regular donor, and the first person to tell me about HFLA. So when I needed some funds in order to get through the last few months of grad school to earn my MSW in 1993, I applied for a loan, and it was granted. Once I'd paid it off, I cosigned a debt consolidation loan for a close friend of mine. Fast forward to early 2022 when I needed to obtain a specialized -- and very expensive -- form of treatment for my daughter. I applied for a Special Needs loan and it was granted. I am a small business in veterinary medicine “Animotion Products, Inc.” My product, the Biko Progressive Resistance (PR) Bands - is an elastic resistance band that helps canines that suffer from hind limb weakness, ataxia, knuckling over, and lack of proprioception. In January 2023, I launched a new product for athlete and working dogs, the Biko Sports Bands. These Bands are used to condition these dogs and are an efficient form of conditioning that does not require a significant amount of time. The Biko Sports Bands help to improve their muscle strength and help to condition the athlete and working canines and prevent sports injuries. When my company began to take off with these two products, my cash flow was not sufficient to maintain my growth. That is when I turned to the Hebrew Free Loan for an interest-free business loan. My name is Ryma Sukhorukova. I asked HFL for help in June 2020, when I already felt like a fish with no water. I lost both my parents 10 and 8 years ago, and I am only 33!!! As a young woman, with no other siblings, it was so hard to survive. I had to pay for 2 funerals, I was owed money to some people for medicine for my parents at that time, and of course I had to support myself on paying rent, bills and etc... To survive, I had to use credit cards, with huge APRs on it, and I didn’t know, for how long it will continue to be like this. I couldn’t save even a $1 for my future. A friend told me about the Hebrew Free Loan during the covid shut downs. I called and spoke with a very kind friendly woman named Judith Markowitz. I felt comfortable and cared for and it seemed as if we had been friends. I never felt intimidated or judged. She was so helpful in going over everything and assisting me. I was at six weeks till graduation for a MBA and I thought to myself how did I get here? I came to San Francisco with big dreams of getting my education here, my dad was retired and my mom disabled and couldn’t afford their own cost of living let alone any of their children. I was in a situation where if I was going to get a degree I had to land a option that I can be able to afford, little did I know how far I had to go to cover school and living to survive and thrive in San Francisco. Let alone it was hard for me to believe that myself, because I was the first person in my family to even get an AA. Both of my parents, and my brothers and sisters, tried to go to college, but they all ended up dropping out because they had children to support and bills to pay. I never thought I’d go on to get a bachelor’s degree, let alone an MBA.

I discovered Judaism at a local synagogue called Sha’ar Zahav. Going to Shabbat services every Friday night gave me time to meditate and think, which made me feel more in touch with humanity, and eventually I converted to Judaism.


During this time I was determined to go to an art school, so I went for as much financial aid as I could, from every possible source. During my last semester I had trouble covering all my expenses and needed to get my own apartment. That’s when I was referred to Hebrew Free Loan. Within just a few weeks I got a loan that let me pay my rent, food, and transportation costs, so I could finish my degree.

Right after graduation I had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to enter an accelerated MBA program at FIDM’s Los Angeles campus. I hadn’t planned on going to graduate school right away, but this was too good an opportunity to pass up. It was expensive to move to LA and get a new apartment and a new job, but Hebrew Free Loan came through for me again with a graduate student loan. I’m not sure how I would have covered all my living expenses without the extra help I got from Hebrew Free Loan.

Completing my master’s degree is truly a wish come true – a vision that I started working toward over 5 years ago. My plan now is to build my career one step at a time, and make sure I stay open to opportunities come my way. I don’t know yet exactly what my future holds. But I want to say that my life would be very different today if it wasn’t for the support of Hebrew Free Loan. Thank you!

At first I found out about Hebrew Free Loan Association of San Francisco about 5-6 years, when they helped my older daughter's family (new homeowners at that time) with their difficult financial situation, and we (my wife and I) were co-signers to their loan. We were very grateful to Hebrew Free Loan at that point, and last year the loan was fully re-paid.
And who knew that this year my family will need a financial help from Hebrew Free Loan Association of San Francisco. I can tell you that my experience with Hebrew Free Loan from the very beginning, when we had to fill in online application form, was great! Everything in their process was straightforward and easy. Right after we applied online, on the next day we received email with additional instructions to provide more details for our case, and it didn't take much time from us either. Then in few days, we scheduled appointment with the case worker, and it was very pleasant and informative experience for us. Our case worker Marina Levy was very knowledgeable professional person, and she really cared about us, and she did everything to make our experience with Hebrew Free Loan be really pleasant. For several years, my wife and I have worked to reign in our expenses and eliminate unnecessary luxuries (vacations, dinners out, babysitters, items for our home). But the cost of living in the Bay Area, combined with student debt, combined with two kids, combined with medical expenses and the usual unexpected costs of life, has made our goal of living debt-free feel more-and-more elusive. Hebrew Free Loan rightly required me to assess my expenses with realistic eyes, to budget carefully, and to get organized. After meeting with their loan officer, having entered the room somewhat sheepishly, I left feeling like I’d made a genuinely smart decision.

Not only did Hebrew Free Loan help me become more organized and disciplined, but I felt like the act of asking and receiving help from the Jewish community actually connected me to meaningful Jewish tradition. It felt like an act of Jewish solidarity, and my loan officer explained that their work – and our relationship – was indeed rooted in Jewish codes.

And, to my surprise, during the process of seeking a loan, I discovered that my parents had in fact received a Hebrew Free Loan before I was born, just when they were struggling to get onto their feet and contemplate having a family. It seems that I organically, yet inadvertently, followed in their footsteps.

So, today, I am on the path to paying off my debt, making smart financial decisions / living within my means, and no longer feeling quite so enslaved by money stress. Yes, I’ve only started the process, and I’ll never be a wealthy man, but I know I’m on my way to more peace. That means everything to my family and me.

I started a business, but did not have enough capital to expand as quickly as I needed. The interest free loan that I received from Hebrew Free Loan enabled me to hop several months (and possibly years) ahead in terms of scaling my business!

Aside from the loan itself, the people working within the organization are absolutely top-notch. Everyone who I spoke with was extremely friendly, and really took the time to understand my business and my goals.

There was a good amount of money involved in my loan, so I was slightly intimidated going into the process. However, I immediately realized that any fears I had were unfounded!

The representative that I worked with gave me several application options, and made sure that we chose the one most likely to get my loan approved. They also assured me that, if my application was to be declined the first time, they would work with me to re-apply until we were all satisfied. Amazing!

I was an international student on a student visa ten years ago and I had no reasonable, viable options for funding/loans while finishing a Phd in Jewish studies. All U.S. dissertation grants in academic Jewish Studies funded U.S. citizens/residents exclusively (some made provisions for Eastern European students, which I was not). My only other option were bank loans with exorbitant interest rates. While the HFL did ask for additional paperwork & references because I was not a U.S. resident/citizen at the time, they were nonetheless the sole organization willing to assist me with much-needed funding while wrapping up my Jewish Studies PhD program. I am very grateful to HFL for the assistance they extended at a critical juncture.

I am a graduate student who has received several no-interest loans from Hebrew Free Loan Association of San Francisco, and I have nothing but positive things to say about this organization. The staff is led by Executive Director Cindy Rogoway, who is warm, personable, and knowledgeable. Not only has she given me excellent advice regarding organizing my budget, but she also remembers personal details about me and my life (despite the fact that I am only one of hundreds of loan recipients with whom she interacts each year). The other members of the staff are very kind as well. I recommend Hebrew Free Loan wholeheartedly. After having already dealt with financing an undergraduate public education, financing a graduate-level degree at a private institution seemed like a different - and more foreboding - beast. I am now a 1L at Harvard Law School facing considerable student debt, but my mind can rest easy knowing that thanks to Hebrew Free Loan I was able to get a significant portion of my yearly funding interest-free. Being approved for a Hebrew Free Loan allowed me to lower the amount of unsubsidized government loans I would have to take out, which start accruing interest while I am still in school and only get larger and larger until one day - hopefully - I will be able to start paying them off. I am personally interested in public service, so chances are that I will not be wealthy beyond imagination in my coming future, so it is a load off my mind to know that I have less interest accruing while I am in school. Honestly, receiving a Hebrew Free Loan is one of the main reasons I feel financially stable today.

My experience as a client of Hebrew Free Loan far exceeded any expectations I had. My loan officer was precise when reviewing my finances, prompt with her responses, and extremely personable. My sister was dying of cancer in a hospital across the country. I needed financial help to get to see her. I had heard of this association several years ago but I thought it was strictly for business or student loans. However, I decided to call and ask if they could help me visit my sister. The staff was very kind and set up an interview with me over skype. I had references from friends and my rabbi. This association approved a personal loan for me within one day.

It was a wonderful mitzvah... I got to spend the last 7 weeks of my sisters life by her side. we became very close and she did not die alone. I was holding her hand.

My son recently applied to the Hebrew Free Loan for assistance in getting funds to allow him to fulfill his dream of attending graduate school in NYC. His application was quickly reviewed, approved and funds sent. The funds will pay his rent for a year, allowing him to focus on his studies and to obtain an critical unpaid internship. HFLA is a tremendous organization whose mission of interest free lending helps the Bay Area Community and individuals in need, at various stages of their lives. I was fortunate to be a loan recipient twice. The first loan I received was a student loan, which was a huge help, this was not an affordable option for me back then, but something I had wanted to accomplish for some time. The second loan was for a small business that I started in 2006. Hebrew Free Loan Association, gave me the opportunity and helped me grow my small business with a $25k loan. With the help of HFLA I have been able to learn and grow both personally and professionally and I will be forever grateful for the future they helped build for me and my family.

When I first found out about this agency several years ago, I thought there had to be a catch. But there isn't -- it is an expertly and efficiently run organization with a solid mission that has deep, direct, and immediate impact on every loan recipient. But loan recipient's aren't the only ones who benefit from this great organization -- donors, co-signers and volunteers all have the opportunity to support individuals in our community in a really tangible and lasting way. I have been volunteering at HFLA for the past three years, and it has become one of my favorite organizations. First and foremost, HFLA has such a welcoming and warm community. Everyone is so caring and truly wants you to enjoy your experience. During my time at HFLA, I typically did basic office tasks, such as filing and organizing loans. Ultimately, volunteering at HFLA is a great and easy way to earn volunteer hours!
