Programs: Here fy17 programming achievements:heres artistic programs are organized within two distinct areas: here produces and here presents. Here produces encompasses our signature initiative, the here artist residency program (harp), and the development and production of projects by here founding artistic director kristin marting, dream music director basil twist, and resident playwright taylor mac. Here artist residency program (harp) supports the visions of our resident artists through commissions, development, and a final production, strengthening their careers for the long-term. In addition to our producing endeavors, here continue to be a pillar in the arts field as a presenter, sustaining prototype: opera/theatre/now; the dream music puppetry program; subletseries@here, a curated rental program; and hereart, our visual art program. Heres robust and ambitious 2016-17 season included four world premiere resident artist productions, prototype 2017, dream music puppetry presentations, and ongoing performances by companies in the subletseries@here curated rental program. Here producesthe first resident artist production, in october 2016, was ship of fools by puppetry/movement-theatre artist jessica scott, exploring the relationship between women and the development of modern psychology. Eva yaa asantewaa of infinitebody noted the wild imagination and detailed, painstaking craft on display in ship of fools. As part of prototype, here produced mata hari, a world premiere of a new opera-theatre work composed by matt marks with a libretto and direction by paul peers, two here resident artists, and inspired by the infamous female spy. The new york times noted the pieces "smart libretto" and called the score "a bold mix of vocal styles. " casablancabox, our third resident artist production, was a hybrid play created by playwright sara farrington and video designer/director reid farrington. Using an original script, elaborate video score, and simulated 3d backgrounds, the work examined the haphazard making of the infamous film, and was nominated for two drama desk awards, including one for here for unique theatrical production. Our final resident artist production of the season premiered in june. The reception, created by theatre artists and collaborators sean donovan and sebastin caldern bentin, draws on several experimental european films of the 1960s to create a wholly contemporary take on the bourgeoisie party, where guests at a modern-day new york city gathering find themselves mysteriously unable to break free from their surroundings. Taylor mac fulfilled the first year of a playwright residency at here by holding several readings. Here presentsheres dream music puppetry program, directed by basil twist, continued to present contemporary, adult puppet works. This season, we were thrilled to present chifln, el silencio del carbn, created by chilean company silencio blanco. The piece told the somber story of a coal miner expelled from the coalmine in which he typically works, only to be forced to maneuver in more dangerous mines. The simple, silent marionettes completely captured the audiences imagination. In spring 2017, here also presented dark circus, by french company stereoptik. Using live and recorded music, projections, live animation and illustration, and a series of comical and intriguing two-dimensional puppets, this presentation marked the works north american premiere after originally being performed in avignon. The 2017 incarnation of prototype: opera/theatre/now, the annual festival of contemporary opera-theatre and music-theatre in new york city produced by here and beth morrison projects (bmp), successfully presented 31 performances from january 5-15, 2017 at here and in a number of partner venues throughout brooklyn and manhattan. This year, for the festivals 6th outing, we expanded the festival by including the first edition of prototype: out of bounds, a series of short, free performances of new music works specially commissioned for performance in public spaces. With out of bounds, the prototype festival moved beyond traditional performing arts venues to public streets, buildings, and sites in new york city. Finally, when here is not showcasing the work of our resident artists or mounting presentations, we continued to maintain subletseries@here, a curated rental program that provides independent dance and theatre companies with subsidized performance space, technical assistance, marketing support, and full box office services. In fy17, the program supported 22 productions.
