I'm glad this program is back. The new in-home foster program is great for the dogs instead of being in kennels. The program is comprehensive - they rescue dogs, train them and place them with Deaf or hard of hearing people. (The SF/SPCA closed their program last year, but still accept donations.)This program is run by only 3 part time employees and 20 volunteers.

Mission: Improve independence and quality of life through highly trained hearing dogs.
Programs: The hearing dog program (hdp) provides canine assistance to people with hearing loss by training dogs to alert deaf and hard of hearing people to important sounds such as the smoke alarm, the telephone, and the doorbell. The hdp obtains dogs primarily from the central california spca in fresno, california and other rescue groups in california. "career change" dogs from guide dogs for the blind in san rafael, california are also trained and placed by the program as hearing dogs. The hdp has developed an improved in-home training model whereby dogs are housed and trained in volunteer foster homes rather than in kennels. The trainer travels to the foster home for training sessions; training is reinforced by the foster trainer, who also socializes the dog and helps with obedience training.
