Mission: Americas society is the premier organization dedicated to education, debate, and dialogue in the americas. Established by david rockefeller in 1965, the society's mission is to foster an understanding of the contemporary political, social, and economic issues confronting latin america, the caribbean, and canada, and to increase public awareness and appreciation of the diverse cultural heritage of the americas and the importance of the inter-american relationship. Americas society fulfills its mission through its cultural and public policy programs. The society's visual arts and music programs create a space for interaction and enhanced appreciation for emerging and established cultural figures by presenting artists, musicians, writers, and scholars from across the hemisphere to u. S. Audiences. Public policy programs engage opinion leaders from the public and private sectors in positive dialogue to exchange ideas and formulate solutions to the challenges facing the americas today.
Programs: Public policy -americas society is committed to furthering education and debate on public policy issues in the hemisphere. This is accomplished through programs, conferences, meetings, working groups, reports, publications, research, high-level meetings with policymakers, scholars, media, community groups, philanthropists, and business leaders. Americas society identifies emerging policy challenges and produces, publishes, and disseminates research and analysis as a basis for debate and dialogue with relevant policymakers, business leaders, community representatives, and the media. As the leading forum for hemisphere-wide debate, the society's public policy programs engage opinion leaders from the public and private sectors in positive dialogue in the united states, canada, and throughout latin america and the caribbean to share ideas with organizations, businesses, and individuals and formulate solutions to the challenges facing the americas today. Americas quarterly (aq) is an award-winning publication dedicated to politics, business, and culture in the americas. Borrowing elements from the economist, foreign affairs, and national geographicbut with a focus on latin america aq is dedicated to covering the region in all its diversity and promise. Aq's elite, agenda-setting readership includes ceos, senior government officials, and thought leaders, as well as a general-interest audience passionate about the americas. In 2017, aq issues included: young entrepreneurs (issue 1); u. S. -mexico relation (issue 2); latin american youth (issue 3); and the future of colombia (issue 4). Issue 1 identified and profiled the main characters in some of the region's most successful business stories. A launch event in miami celebrated latin america's entrepreneurial superstars. Issue 2 explored at length the topic of the ties that bind mexico and the united states. Looking past the day-to-day political debate, the magazine told a larger story of shared prosperity over the more than two decades since the implementation of the north american free trade agreement (nafta). The launch of issue 3 took place at a panel discussion event in el paso, texas, where experts debated the future of the bilateral relationship and how it will affect trade, immigration, and the millions of people who live along the border. Issue 3 shadowed the daily lives of four young adults over the course of eight weeks in the cities of guadalajara, lima, rio de janeiro, and san salvador to learn about their ambitions, dreams, and the obstacles they face. A launch event in lima keynoted by then vice president of peru mercedes araoz addressed the opportunities and challenges faced by young latin americans. Issue 4 looked at colombia's challenges and potential strategies moving forward, one year after the colombian government and the country's largest rebel group signed a peace deal. A launch event in bogot gathered representatives from the government, private sector, and civil society to discuss issues such as economic development and drug policy. Americas quarterly's website, aq online (www. Americas quarterly. Org) provides exclusive multimedia content, news updates, and blog posts from around the hemisphere, as well as experimenting with new ways to engage readers in virtual debates on the most pressing topics in the region. Aq provides full digital access to the magazine on the aq app, available for iphone, ipad, android, and kindle. Since 2007, the as/coa cuba working group (cwg) has been at the forefront of a changing u. S. -cuba relationship. Cwg serves as both a bridge between the private and public sectors in the united states and cuba, and as an extraordinary repository of policy knowledge on bilateral relations. The group navigates cuba's changing economic and political landscape and u. S. Ties, and helps businesses understand the changing regulatory framework, investment opportunities, and areas for collaboration. In 2017 the as/coa cwg organized nine programs in new york, washington, miami, and havana, among them a senior-level business delegation to the island to continue promoting the benefits of economic ties between cuba and the united states. Speakers at the cwg events included u. S. Representative tom emmer and cuban permanent representative to the un anayansi rodriguez. Through its signature latin american cities conferences, americas society continued to offer an unparalleled platform for public and private exchanges where top government officials and business leaders and investors discussed some of the most pressing issues facing the region. Held in bogota, brasilia, buenos aires, lima, mexico city, santiago, and sao paulo, our 2017 conferences featured keynote remarks and panel discussions on topics including women's economic empowerment and gender parity, political and economic outlook, the future of north american integration, the evolution of foreign direct investment flows, sustainable development, and infrastructure needs in a new climate reality. Prominent speakers at the series' gatherings included presidents, ministers, governors, secretaries, ambassadors, senior representatives from multilateral organizations, ceos, and leading entrepreneurs and innovators. Among the top officials featured at our latin american cities conferences were chile's then-president michelle bachelet, brazil's president michel temer, canada's minister of foreign affairs chrystia freeland, mexico's secretary of foreign affairs luis videgaray, and argentina's chief of the cabinet of the ministers marcos pena. The conferences continue to be highly anticipated events in each city; our seven public conferences and eight private meetings attracted more than three thousand attendees and received over 320,000 live views via webcasting. In conjunction with our public latin american cities conferences, americas society organized and co-hosted a number of invitation-only elite events to convene our local and international corporate, board, council members and guests with senior hemispheric officials and business leaders for intimate, off-the-record programs. These programs provide an ideal setting for constituents to engage with invited guests on critical hemispheric issues. As part of our presidents of the americas series, americas society co-hosted programs for latin american heads of state at our u. S. Offices and in cities across the western hemisphere for an opportunity to dialogue on their countries' investment opportunities and current economic and political environments. In 2017, we hosted public and private programs with the heads of state of argentina, brazil, chile, colombia, costa rica, ecuador, panama, and peru. Along with the council of the americas, americas society continues to advance the mission of the women's hemispheric network, an initiative that encourages rising young professional women to stay in the workforce and reach leadership positions. The network launched in october 2012 at a new york workshop featuring then-executive director of un women michelle bachelet and former first lady of mexico margarita zavala. Building on that success, the network went global hosting a series of events in nine cities across the americas in 2017. Conversations at the miami whn's conference in 2017 revolved around topics such as fostering diversity, empowering women in the corporate environment, and the power of mentorship in the promotion of professional advancement. The whn conference in santiago coincided with international women's day 2017 and marked the network's sixth year of existence. The event in santiago featured keynote remarks by then-president of chile michelle bachelet, and a group of dynamic speakers who explored best practices for women working to build a professional network. The annual new york conference featured panels on the importance of creating an impactful personal brand and on the effects of unconscious bias on the ability for women to succeed in their careers. Incae center for collaborative and women's leadership research director dr. Susan clancy and mexican senator cristina diaz were among a group of high-level speakers. The whn closed its activities for 2017 with a conference in mexico city that featured costa rica's former president laura chinchilla and idb group mexico representative veronica zavala.
visual arts program -the society's visual arts program boasts the longest-standing private space in the u. S. Dedicated to exhibiting and promoting art from latin america, the caribbean, and canada; it has achieved a unique and renowned leadership position in the field, producing both historical and contemporary exhibitions. The visual arts program presents three exhibitions annually, each accompanied by a series of public and educational programs featuring outstanding artists, curators, critics and scholars. The visual arts program produces exhibition catalogues as well as scholarly publications, including the seminal work, a principality of its own: 40 years of visual arts at the americas society. In 2017, americas society's visual arts program presented three exhibitions and 21 public programs. In the winter, the society presented facundo de zuviria: siesta argentina and other modest observations, an exhibition inspired by the vernacular architecture, design, and urban landscape of buenos aires. The new york times and arts summary among other publications reviewed siesta argentina. In the spring, the program presented the exhibition erick meyenberg: the wheel bears no resemblance to a leg, the result of the artist's collaboration with members of a high school marching band, curators, guest musicians, composers, costume designers, and a video production team, who together created choreographies, musical scores, and a series of performances at some of mexico city's most emblematic and politically marked sites. The show was accompanied by a richly illustrated publication that documents and contextualizes the artist's extensive research. The final exhibition of 2017 was the highly acclaimed jose leonilson: empty man, a show focused on one of brazil's leading figures of contemporary art. An academic symposium at new york university's institute of fine arts celebrated the exhibition and the international launch of the three-volume leonilson catalogue raisonne. The show received rave reviews in publications including the new york times, the new yorker, the paris review, artnews, artforum, art in america, and the village voice. In 2017 the society also presented the fully-illustrated hardcover catalogue told and untold: the photo stories of kati horna in the illustrated press, a celebration of the exhibition hosted at the art gallery in the fall of 2016.
music program -the society's music program continues to increase awareness of and appreciation for the wide range of important music, past and present, produced throughout the hemisphere. Notable established and emerging performers from latin america, the caribbean, and canada are presented to audiences, often for the first time. In 2017, the metlife foundation music of the americas concert series presented 23 events in new york. It held performances through ongoing collaborations with the instituto superior de arte del teatro colon; new york guitar seminar at mannes; gotham early music scene; centro de experimentacion del teatro colon; banff centre for creativity; and cinema tropical. [see continuation on schedule o]. Program initiatives included the production of two cds, a symposium, film screenings, and premieres of several new works. Season highlights included the tribute to mercedes sosa; the new york debut of the cuban early music group ars longa de la habana; brazilian concert pianist clelia iruzun; mexican composer mario lavista's maithuna; and an evening in the momenta festival, featuring cuban rapper telmary daz. Director sebastian zubieta led meridionalis, americas society's choral ensemble, in performances of argentine composer pablo ortiz's choral works in new york, as well as in early music from latin america in havana and quito. Music of the americas programs were featured in the new york times and new york music daily among other prominent media outlets, and received thousands of views on americas society's youtube channel.
communications / website -as/coa online reached new digital audiences at record rates in 2017. Webcasts earned more than half a million views and our social media presence continued to expand with our events trending on twitter in bogota, brasilia, buenos aires, mexico city, miami, santiago, and washington, dc. More than 700 journalists attended the coa programs across the hemisphere and the organizations' events, experts, and publications received 8,000 media mentions in outlets including the new york times, the washington post, cnn, financial times, fox news, bloomberg, reuters, foreign policy, cnbc, forbes, npr, bbc, usa today, the miami herald, politico, nbc news, quartz, buzzfeed, and major latin american newspapers and news television programs. Our digital channels offer the best of coverage from as/coa programming, along with high quality content exploring the top issues affecting the americas. Through updates and explainers, we break down what's behind the news on themes ranging from economics to elections. Podcasts with regional experts provide insights on topics such as colombia's peace talks and north american relations. Our infographics lay out the facts on regional trade, technology, and demographics. And our videos feature regional leaders talking on matters like u.
