Causes: Arts & Culture
Mission: The mission of the 40 west arts district is to enrich the community and enhance the creative, cultural and economic vitality of the historic west colfax corridor in lakewood, colorado by creating community arts spaces and community arts events and by supporting creative enterprises and activities in the district.
Programs: Arts district programming: in 2014, 40 west arts was designated a certified creative district by the state of colorado for its accomplishments in serving the west colfax community through arts and culture programming. District venues and facilities delivered more than 140 days of arts programming in calendar year 2014, which included arts exhibitions, art classes, art demonstrations, arts & crafts festivals, theater performances, musical and dance performances, poetry readings, literary arts groups, and hands-on arts-related community activities.
project colorfax: project colorfax is a mural program to bring vibrant color and art to the west colfax corridor. In 2014, 40 west arts delivered four (4) new murals to the community. These murals all contributed to the overall renaissance occurring along west colfax. One of the murals, hear the train a humming, by bobby magee lopez, was selected by westword magazine as best new public art installation. More murals and other types of public art are in progress.
artist in residence program: the 40 west arts artist in residence program is awarded every year to a senior student at rocky mountain college of art + design. There is a rigorous application and selection process for the artist in residence program. The student selected receives a rent-free live/work unit at lamar station crossing in return for service to the 40 west arts community in the form of monthly arts-related programming children and adults and open studio hours to interact with locals and visitors to the district.
