Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Training, Animals, Public & Societal Benefit

Mission: It is the mission of Domino Service Dogs (DSD) to assist people with disabilities in assessing and training their own service dog using reward based training techniques.

Results: Domino Service Dogs has provided support to more than 40 owner-trained service dog teams.

Target demographics: people with disabilities train their own service dog

Direct beneficiaries per year: 15 service dog teams.

Geographic areas served: Metro Denver, Colorado

Programs: Hearing dogs are individually trained to alert their hearing impaired handler to a variety of environmental sounds. Sound alerts may include, but are not limited to the following; a doorbell/knock, timers, washer/dryer alarms, phone ringing, fire alarm, emergency vehicle sirens, horns, baby crying, name being called, etc. Some hearing assistance dogs only work sounds in the home. While other hearing dogs work sounds both inside and outside of the home. Mobility assistance dogs are individually trained to assist persons with physical impairments that effect mobility. Our mobility dogs are trained to perform tasks such as retrieving dropped items, retrieving items by name, clothing assistance, laundry assistance, stability/balance, door opening/closing, turning lights on/off, wheelchair propulsion, etc. Each teams tasks are individually trained to fit the specific needs of the handler. Mobility assistance dogs can be trained for a wide range of disabilities, including Multiple Sclerosis, spinal cord injuries, Cerebral Palsy, and many others. Psychiatric service dogs are individually trained to perform tasks which mitigate the psychiatric disabilities of their handler. Our Psychiatric Service Dog can be trained to perform tasks such as, deep pressure therapy, leading their handler from a crowded/stressful situation, medication reminders, interrupting self harm behaviors, etc. Medical response dogs, are individually trained to perform tasks during or following a seizure or other medical crisis. Our Medical Response Dogs tasks may include rolling the person on their side, getting help, operating a k9 phone, retrieving a container of items the person will need during recovery, etc. It is estimated that about 15% of seizure dogs are naturally able to predict seizures, before they occur. On average, these predictions or alerts are made 10-20 minutes before the seizure. This warning gives the person with the seizure disorder an opportunity to take medication, move to a safe place, or call for help.

DSD does a great job listening to their clients and their needs. They did a wonderful job of matching us with our puppy based on need and then have gone above and beyond with the training. They are very helpful and quick to respond to questions and concerns.

I believe that Domino Service Dogs is a wonderful nonprofit organization that has changed the lives of many. Including my niece, who has received a dog from Domino and it has completely changed her life. In return, has changed the lives of those around her. The organization not only places dogs with people they create a new life for them and their families. There is no other organization that i would recommend not only for my own family but for those who are in need of a service dog.

I Have had the privilege of seeing these dogs in public and they are exceptionally well behaved. The handlers are wonderful and so professional. It is great to see these partnerships and witness the behavior of these noble service animals.

Highly recommend. Barbara and her team are one of a kind. They are professionals. The real deal. The services they provide are honestly priceless. I’d also like to commend them on the way they are conducting business during these sensitive times as we navigate COVID-19 together as a whole. They are very well prepared. Barbara specifically is direct, informative, and very kind (not to mention all dogs love her) and I wouldn’t want any other group of people training my dog. I trust them.

Every trainer I've had at domino has been incredibly supportive and filled with positive reinforcement. I have no doubt that my son will have the perfect service companion to guide him into adulthood when our training is complete. Not to mention, I feel like I've developed some great lifelong friends during our time. Thank you so much!

I am super grateful to Domino Service Dogs for my new best friend, Charlie. Charlie and I are in the process of training together for Charlie to become a certified service dog. We are using positive training techniques. This type of training not only achieves the desired results, it also creates a deep relationship based in trust, respect and care (love). Right now I am recovering from surgery and Charlie has not left my side. Domino Service Dogs has made my life better. Thank you!

As a person who is interested, I had the honor to sit in on a service dog assessment and a couple of training classes. I was completely amazed and appreciate Barbara. Her skill extends beyond dog training (which is incredible). She is also perceptive, kind and holds great insight into creating a healthy and functional team between the person and the service dog. The classes I observed encouraged great respect and care within the team and was conducted in a way that promoted success for both the dog and the person. I came away deeply touched and inspired.

My family has been working with Domino Service Dogs for about two months now, and it has been amazing for us. My son and I attend training classes with the poodle Barbara chose for us. He is training to be an autism service dog for my son. He is an amazing puppy already, and training classes have been so helpful. I can't emphasize enough how well they have worked with my son and I. They offer thorough support, and are excellent proponents of the disability community. I have been so nervous about raising a service dog, but the help, guidance, and training we have received has been vital. The cost to us has been better than reasonable, and I feel so lucky to be working with DSD!

AWESOME,AWESOME,AWESOME!!! I cannot say how impressed I am with them. Barbara Henry, the Executive Director and Head Trainer is incredibly knowledgeable, skilled, can get a dog to do just about anything. She is kind, empathetic and caring. All her clients love her. She turns out service dogs for a fraction of the cost of other service dog programs, builds clients self-esteem and independence, and has truly changed the lives of many people. One example is a client who never left the home for many years. Barbara helped get a dog, worked with the client one-on-one, then the client began attending small group classes, and has a real life again. Goes out to dinner, shopping, visits with friends and family...This is just one example of many! And a tiny fraction of their budget goes to any salaries, the vast majority goes to overhead (the training facility) and supporting clients. If you are looking for a worthy organization to donate to, this is it! you can KNOW the money is being used for the purpose you were told it would be, to support people with disabilities in training their own service animals.

I began volunteering with Domino Service Dogs in the beginning of 2020. I found the people knowledgeable, friendly, and willing to help. The pandemic started and Domino had to close for awhile, as did many businesses. Shortly after Domino reopened, I needed surgery and have had complications as well as still isolating myself because of the pandemic. I cannot tell you how much I miss the work, the staff and the clients!

This is an incredible organization which provides much needed services to those who need to train their dogs to help them with their daily needs and disabilities, either for themselves or for a family member. The dog trainers are knowledgeable, dedicated and are adaptable to working with different dog personalities to provide the diverse needs of the clients. The staff is helpful, accommodating and the organization provides a needed service!

Barbra and DSD have been wonderful. Barbra has helped find the best dog for our daughter with special needs. She has been wonderful in helping us train our puppy and is open to helping us solve any problems we encounter in our journey with training. Even though training is time consuming, the outings and classes are fun and the time goes by so fast. We are so blessed to be in this program and to help our daughter and to train her service dog.

When no one else would help me train my dog to be a hearing assist dog Domino Service dogs step up and said yes. Losing ones hearing is scary and makes you want to hide from the hearing world. Having a buddy beside you that can alert you to people calling your name or wake you up in the morning is life saving for me. She can alert to buzzers going off in my kitchen so everyone will have a wonderful meal. My dog lets me know when emergency vehicles are approaching so I can be aware of there presence. This all happen for me because Domino Service dogs said yes. I will always be grateful to Barbara Henry the head trainer and my mentor of Domino Service Dogs.

Domino Service Dogs has been amazing helping me train my dog to be my hearing service dog. They have worked with me when my schedule changed.Their ideas and suggestions have been extremely helpful. Every one is very nice and helpful. I totally recommend them if you need a service dog. Training your own dog is so helpful because the dog then knows you and your mannerisms.

Domino Service Dogs, Barb and her staff helped train my dog, Jujubeans, for Brace and balance. They were always patient and I think worked harder at training me than Juju but after what seemed like a long time we finally graduated. Juju has been my lifeline these past four years and made my life so much easier and consequently fuller. I can't began to express how all encompassing the training was allowing us to go anywhere and do anything with total confidence.

The support that I have received in the ability to train my Service dog has been nothing less but the most positive experience I have ever had the understanding of persons with a disability to help you realize how your dog can be the best gift.
A person with disabilities is limited even in Dailey activities. The service dog inables many to continue productive Dailey tasks.
Some help with picking up items, open doors push buttons.
Elsie is in training for these tasks along with she will be my stability companion.
Elsie and I are one year + and working towards graduating

In May of 2014, I met Barbara Henry and my service dog, my new best friend. The two year owner train program covers almost every situation we may encounter, with weekly "classroom" training & real world outings. Training is more than skill & cue training. It is confidence training for people and their dogs. My service dog is an incredible help. She keeps me from falling and helps me up if I do fall. She picks up a plethora of dropped items & helps me get ready each day. She's a terrific help on laundry day! Very grateful for Domino Service Dogs, empowering people 4 paws at a time!
