They were very upfront with how long the process was going to take. This was our 5th time adopting a rescue and the longest it took to be approved, but in hindsight we've been highly blessed to have been selected to have Rex come into our home.
we bought a pet from there many years ago and I wish I would have read these reviews. she was rude and incompetent. she's the worst vet. came to our home to meet our pet, did nothing but criticized everything about how we handled our pet , the good everything, like she was the goddess of the animal world. after a long process we finally get our pet, took him to our vet to discover he was sick. cost us over $150 to get him back to health all the while she kept saying she didn't our pet to get this new one sick. if she was a good vet she would have known that. I think she gets a power trip from turning people to shred like she feels she has power over ppl. he has turned out to be a horrible pet that we're still dealing with today. don't adopt from there. believe the negative reviews on here they are true.
Most wonderful loving dogs I’ve ever had, but if the owner was hanging from a ledge, I wouldn’t do a thing to aid her. I would love to see the psychiatric eval on this nut job. Oh - and get an independent vet opinion beforehand - she’ll work you over on your past but not disclose the real issues with the ones she’s adopting out. Wouldn’t change my decision but wouldn’t have put up with her bulls&$t like I did.
I adopted two wonderful chihuahuas from Critter Care Adoptions over a 6 month period. Cheryl was intense in her due diligence for the sake of the dogs, and I am so pleased that she is this way. When a dog gets adopted, Cheryl follows up with the owner to ensure all is well with the dog two weeks later. I have been to her home where she kennels the dogs and can assure you that Cheryl works very hard to keep her house clean. Clutter was a problem after she had a very large amount of hoarded chihuahuas dropped off by the animal officer from another county resulting in a huge influx of cages. Cheryl feeds all the dogs in a cage to eliminate any issue of guarding or fighting for food. As she gets the dogs adopted or placed in foster homes, she has been able to get her home back into a less cluttered status. Her love of dogs is by far the most apparent virtue. No matter who comes to her with a dog that needs to be surrendered, most often due to medical treatments, she agrees and works diligently to get the dog well and then posted for adoption. She paid to have my one chihuahua's bilateral knees repaired at great expense. For those who have written such hateful reviews, I should try walking in her shoes for a week. I can assure you, they wouldn't make it through the second day.
The veterinarian that runs this is a huge nut case. I am in medical field and this woman needs shut down, she’s crazy. I feel bad for all these poor pups that would have great homes if she would/ could buy herself a personality, get back to you in a timely manner and not string you along for weeks. She is rude, overconfident, and acts like no one but her has ever owned a pet nor knows how to properly care for one . I am surprised someone has not turned her in yet. We decided to go to another rescue had no problems at all, home visit and all done in less than a week. Save yourself and your kids the heartache and go somewhere else to adopt.
My experience is that they are not respectful or courteous of others and their time. I had applied to adopt a dog, and they arranged for me to meet the dog and Cheryl. I had to bring my dog which was ok. My drive to Critter Care is about an hour, so 2 hours roundtrip. That isn't far but still no quick jaunt for nothing. Well the dog I wanted to adopt was sweet in general but not too keen of my dog. Ok normal because some dogs take time to warm up. Well Cheryl basically dismissed my interest in this dog based on 1 brief interaction between him and my dog. That isn't fair or even makes sense as there was no aggression.
Here is the worst part. She suggested that I come the next day to see another dog that just had a litter. Well not for the puppies but for the mom. She was the same age and temperament of my dog so Cheryl thought it would be a better fit. Ok fine. So I came back the next day as she scheduled me to.. so totalling 4 hours roundtrip. When I get there, I had to sit for a hour while Cheryl completely ignored me, didn't even make eye contact! Nothing! I mean, we just met the evening before and she told me to come back! I couldn't get over how rude she was to me.
The front desk girl wasn't pleasant and kept looking at me suspiciously after I had said why I was there. So I was about to leave because I had had it by that point, then Cheryl finally had me come back to see the Mom dog.
When I get back, there is already another group of people seeing this dog and the conversation was like they already were making the arrangements for them to adopt her!
The breeder was there and suggested I adopt one of her puppies. I simply said I could not at that time.
So I was strung along, treated poorly and had my time and fuel wasted. It isn't not getting the dog, it is how I was treated.
Honestly, it felt as if you had to personally know people in the area, and if you don't then you're out of luck.
This organization is shameful. I have been trying to adopt a dog now for over a month and have been given the run around. This woman is a hoarder and does not want to let go of any of these dogs...she has 18 dogs and numerous cats that live in her private home...how on earth can that be sanitary! The dog I am trying to adopt escaped from her, doing the right thing I was able to find where she belonged...when we heard she was available to adopt, my family and I were so happy to think that she was going to be ours, ha little did we know what was going to happen. When this woman came to,pick her up the poor dog coward away from her and hid, she wanted nothing to do with this woman! At that point I should have never let her take her back. Looking back I wish I would have never looked for her proper owner because she would be home, safe and loved with us. I am contacting the proper authorities in the morning to hopefully put a stop to this all,
We found some puppies on Petfinder available through Critter Care Adoptions. We submitted the application the same day. We had a terrible time actually making contact with someone from the rescue. We were told the vet in charge would get in touch with us. She did text and ask how late she could call. I stayed up waiting and received no call. This continued for about a week before we finally got in touch and they set up an appointment for a "meet and greet." We had to bring our dog along, which was okay with us. We drove four hours round trip to meet these pups. Our big dog has never been around puppies, so we were curious to see how she would react. We thought she handled it very well. First, the meeting was in a vet hospital. Our dog does not enjoy going to the vet. So I'm sure the smells of the clinic made her uneasy. There were three puppies, the mother dog and three people from the rescue present for the meet and greet. Our dog mostly stepped around the puppies to get a drink of water, then went around the room to meet all the people and get some attention, then sniffed the puppies some more, etc. At one point, one of the pups stood on her hind legs and swatted our dog in the nose. Our dog bared her teeth and backed away. That's all she did. Her way of communicating, "Don't do that." I think that is normal behavior for a dog. We have had dogs for 25 years and adult dogs need to teach pups how to treat them. That 10 second interaction is apparently the reason we were declined to adopt from Critter Care. We were at the meet and greet for approximately one hour and the rest of the time went fine. I had a bad feeling before we even left that they were going to decline us. The vet was critical of the food we feed (Purina) and the flea and tick preventative we use. (My daughter raises money for animal shelters -- almost $8000 in the past four years -- by making homemade pet products and selling them. She make an all-natural flea and tick spray with essential oils. She even brought a bottle to share with Critter Care. The vet's only response was to point out that my daughter spelled "scent" wrong on the label. She's 12. We try to focus on the good she's doing rather than the spelling.)
As I said, we have had dogs for 25 years, adopted from two different shelters in the past, never given up a pet, provided vet records dating back over 14 years . . . and we were declined. So I'm not sure who is actually able to get approved.
My biggest disappointment is not even that they declined us. It's that they strung us along for so long. I had a feeling the day we met the pups they were going to say no. I wish they had just said it instead of stringing us along and making our three kids wait so anxiously to see if they were getting a new pup.
Fortunately, we have already applied to and been approved by another rescue group and we will be going to choose a dog that's a good fit for our family next weekend.
My best advice would be not to waste your time. It's unfortunate because a rescue group obviously has animals that need homes, but it's hard to meet their standards.
I just wanted to take this time to thank Cheryl from Critter Care Adoptions for her hard work in helping to rescue Snickers, a German Shepherd mix. He belonged to a client of mine, but she was unable to keep him due to complications with her living arrangements. Snickers was 2 years old and was not the most well-behaved dog, but was very sweet and just needed some love and attention. My client was going to forfeit him to a shelter, but my fear was that most shelters would immediately put him down due to his behavioral issues. I therefore turned to social media as well as calling every rescue in the area in hopes of locating someone that could help find a home for this sweet boy. Unfortunately, I received very few responses on social media, and was not having any success with rescues calling me back. I then received a call from Cheryl and I immediately could tell from talking with her that she was someone that truly cared about this animal’s safety and well-being. I discussed Snickers’ situation with her at length, and she assured me that she would do everything in her power to help find Snickers a home. Through her relentless efforts, she was able to help find a no-kill shelter that was willing to take Snickers in. While we could not find him his forever home, with Cheryl’s help, Snickers now has a home at a shelter that will take care of him and make sure he is safe until he can be adopted one day. I am truly appreciative of Cheryl’s assistance, which saved Snickers’ life. I can’t thank her enough for all of her help, and would recommend this rescue to anyone trying to help an animal in need. Thank you again for your help Cheryl! I am forever grateful! Kara Burdelski.
First I'd like to say that hoarder 128 is an absolte liar and should be ashamed of herself (I assume it's a woman.). I have known Dr. Haywood for 10 years. Her house does not smell and her mother doesn't live with her so why the blatant lies I have no idea. I'm guessing maybe she turned her down for adoption, probably a bad home. Dr. Haywood is an excellent vet. She spends thousands of dollars of her own money on her fosters. If it's a surgery or treatment she can't do herself the animal goes to PVSEC. She takes in animals with serious health issues and elderly animals. Her vet clinic is wonderful and I would recommend it to anyone.
Cheryl rigorously reviews adoption applicants, which I believe all shelters wish they had the capacity to do. She works full time as a vet and commits her free time to caring for and finding homes for abandoned and anused animals. Every step of her process was worth having Willie and Scout come in our lives.
I would like to commend Cheryl from Critter Care Adoptions for the compassion she has for her adoptable furry family members. My friend, Berkleysmom2, adopted a great dog from Cheryl at Critter Care to help spark some life and be a companion for her sick dog, Beemer. RIP Beems. Merlin (aka Berkley) fit in so well with my friend and Beemer. He help Beemer live the last bit of his life with a friend and a companion that made him feel like a puppy again. They were best buds and he kept Beemer motivated to live his remaining time on this earth with spunk and quality. When the time came and Beemer left this earth, Merlin was there for my friend to help her get through the hard times of missing Beemer. He has continued to be Becky's best bud and fill her broken heart with love and happiness.
Cheryl has a very hard job on her hands. She does it very well. She called me as a reference to make sure the Merlin was going to a great home and would be well taken care of and loved. We talked a very long time on the phone and she asked many questions. I had no problems with Cheryl asking about the care and love Merlin would have when Becky adopted him. Cheryl was very professional and cares deeply for the welfare of her fur babies. Only the right home will be accepted. Cheryl may have strict, but very needed qualifications, and in turn this may turn some adopters against her.
Remember....Cheryl is helping lost souls find new homes....it's a very difficult decision to make the best placement happen....her concerns are for the proper fit with adopters and adoptees.....
ALL ADOPTION AGENCIES have their rules and reasons to accept or deny adopters....it's for the best concern of there animals.....they don't want them to be repeat adoptees...
So, please don't be hesitant about contacting Critter Care Adoptions...... you may be hurt and confused about why you're not selected...don't hold a grudge...be understanding and move on...you'll find the right adoption agency.....
these lost souls need your help...not your hurt feelings....don't give up!
DO NOT ADOPT FROM Critter Care I Have adopted six different cats From the Animal Rescue League And Western Humane Society In my lifetime I have never had such a horrible experience with this woman CHERYL Her house stinks to high heavens She sends you through all this paperwork Makes you wait a week or more Then Claim she leaves a message on your answering machine telling you If you are going to get the pet or not but no message was there She is definitely a hoarder of animals She has all these kittens Cats and dogs And her 90 Some year old mother living in this filth that will never be adopted The most worst experience in my lifetime. SHE NEEDS TO BE SHUT DOWN Definitely Definitely a hoarder Just nasty
I adopted a lovely and absolutely delightful puppy from Critter Care. While the process was rigorous, I could not be more delighted with my little Stella. I applaud and admire Doc Cheryl and her team for finding ideal environments for these abused and abandoned animals.
My wife and I recently adopted an adorable, sweet dog through Critter Care, and have been extremely pleased with the entire process.
Dr. Cheryl has been very kind and thorough, has treated little Willie with incredible kindness and care, and has given us a tremendous amount of guidance and help.
We are very grateful to Dr. Cheryl and Critter care for doing so much to bring this new family member into our lives.
I would like to extend my sincere appreciation and gratitude to Cheryl from Critter Care Adoptions Inc. There are so many shelters and rescues, but she went above and beyond to interview myself to make sure that we were the right family for Merlin! She was very honest and pleasant during our meet and greet and did an extensive work up with my references pending the adoption process. My older dog has renal failure and she took time to give me advice and even gave me tips and renal diet dog food. She encouraged different foods and gave me feedback on how I could even further help him with his illness. I was fortunate and adopted a 2 year old Shihtzu/Maltese male who was named Merlin. Her biography on Merlin was absolutely correct! He got along very well with my 5 year old Shihtzu, Beemer, loves car rides, is always by my side and does like to be the top dog in the house. The minute that they hung out, you can see that they would be best buddies:). Cheryl was very kind and drove over an hour an a half to bring Merlin to our home. I know that Cheryl has a special place in her heart caring for all of these animals. Her focus and main goal is to place the animal in the proper care that is best for the pet. I am very appreciative that I found Critter Care Adoptions, Inc. by Google searching what I exactly was looking for. I will absolutely 100% look to Critter Care to adopt another dog from Cheryl in the future. Thanks Cheryl for our follow up conversations and giving me this special little boy, we all just love him!!!!
DO NOT ADOPT FROM THIS LADY!! We filled an application with references and vet information. A week goes by and she calls saying we have been approved and to meet her at her house the next evening at 7:30 to pick the kitten we wanted. We show up right on time. Her husband answers the door and tells us she is not here and to wait in our car. As we sat in our car for another half hour waiting she finally pulls in ( no phone call or text saying she will be late). We finally get inside the house. Let me tell you....the smell is so horrible, I had to hide back puking. She has 15 dogs and 14 cats....yes a total of 29 animals. We end up picking the kitten we wanted (to save it from the smell). She says she will be at our house Friday at 6pm to bring the kitten over. She finally arrived at 8:30. She sits on our catch for more than an hour and tells us she can't leave the kitten with us!!!! Our house is clean and tidy. She has hoarding issues and doesn't want to get rid of any of her animals! This lady is a joke....
Sounds like a trend with this lady. She (the vet that runs the program) has a dog that we've been trying to adopt for a month now. We went through a meeting with our existing dog and everything went well.
We were GRILLED about the vet records of one of our cats because of some dental problems that *may* have lingered just a smidge too long in her eyes. The vet records of our other 2 pets, including our dog, were completely overshadowed by what she may have interpreted as inappropriate care.
The backstory detail probably isn't important, so I'll just put the events in chronological order here:
1. Inquiry phone call in resopnse to Petfinder ad
2. Application submitted
3. Dogs met and got along well. We were 1 of 3 potential homes. Phone call promised by end of the week.
4. End of the week comes and goes with a thin excuse that she was ill and unable to call our references that week. Fair enough. Inconsideration forgiven.
5. 2 weeks go by
6. Saturday phone call saying she's ours if we're still interested! Yay! Note: none of our references were called. Of course we accepted!
7. I'm typing this on the day she promised to deliver the dog to us. It's 11:38am. She was supposed to deliver the dog "sometime Saturday afternoon...I'll call Monday and let you know what time". Needless to say, I probably wouldn't be writing this review if we had received that phone call. We have slim hope that she's coming home to us today.
Animals aren't being delivered to homes in a timely and considerate manner with this shelter. Having purchased our Freddy from a pet store (yes, i'm not ashamed...they need homes, too), I certainly hope this isn't an indicator of how other shelters are run.
This shelter will jerk your heart strings, make you prepare blindly, and then drop you seemingly without a second thought. The animals need homes, and they might be better off here than a kill shelter, but don't allow your hopes to get the better of you when dealing with them.
UPDATE: Sunday, 1:35pm. She FINALLY called us at 8:30pm last night (the day promised the 2nd go around) and told ME she'd be here with the dog between 1 and 2pm. Told my WIFE she'd CALL between 1 and 2 as she was leaving. She's 50 minutes away door to door.
She hasn't called or shown up yet.....
We, too, wanted to adopt a dog from this organization (adoption fee was $250). I did several phone interviews in which I was told that we were good candidates so far, filled out the adoption application which was five pages long, including several references. I received another phone call telling me to check my calendar as we had passed and were now allowed to come see the dog. My husband plows snow and so I wanted to wait a day or so to see what the weather was going to be as this would be a fairly long drive and my husband might not be available. Upon checking my e-mail, just ONE day after the "check my calendar" call, I received an e-mail (not a phone call as before) telling me that we were not a good fit for the dog. Now, this particular foster mom has eight dogs in her house waiting to be adopted, but we were deemed unfit to adopt. What's wrong with this picture? I would never consider adoption from this organization again. I gave it one star only because that's as low as I could go. Don't waste your time.
My review is the exact same as the others. We spoke with the foster woman who had the dog, she said everything looked really good and to schedule to meet the dog. We went to set up a time and were told we did not meet the qualifications. We have had several dogs who we treat like our children, but apparently weren't worthy enough for them.
DO NOT START trying to adopt from this "rescue group". I think the vet who runs this is a nut and it will only break your heart after being jerked around for weeks!
My experience is identical to what the other two reviewers said.
I was extremely disappointed in the adoption process with this agency. Our intention was to be a one dog family and give an older dog an excellent and loving home in a beautiful community with access to excellent care, exercise and nutrition.
We filled out the application, had a home visit with the "foster family" who were very encouraging but warned us that the vet who operates the agency is abrasive, intrusive, and not well liked at many of the veterinary facilities from which she attempts to collect records. I naively assumed that my cooperation in providing all records with regard to my previous animals, a good report from the "foster" family along with Maggie's demonstrated affection for our youngest child would make the approval of our adoption easy.
I couldn't have been more wrong! Our family was rejected because we didn't have a completely fenced in yard and the vet felt we did not meet her standards of care. Holy what????
In my opinion, this agency has likely prevented a great number of dogs from enjoying loving homes where they would be the center of attention rather than one dog in a pack of 14 farmed out to a foster family.
I cannot recommend this agency in good conscience to anyone seeking to adopt a pet. It was a needlessly heartbreaking experience for all of our children.
I tried to adopt a puppy from this nonprofit organization. I first contacted this person via email in October 2012, at witch point I received an Auto response email in return, with zero information about the dog. I finally got a call back from this person, and had a phone interview. Then all my references where called and my landlord, all of witch was fine. I proceeded to drive an hour away from my home to this shelter to actually see the dog. And I left under the impression that, the Foster mother needed to see my home, but besides that, there should be no problem. Another week goes by, I get a phone call from critter care, letting me know that this person is letting a neighbor adopt the dog, so that she herself can be the dogs vet. It was a waste of my time. People should not Foster dogs if they don't actually want to adopt them out.
