Causes: Public Transportation Systems
Mission: Transitcenter is dedicated to supporting and promoting greater use of public transit through program activities that include applied research and publications, information and education efforts, grant-making, and the convening of events which promote the many benefits of public transit. Transitcenter,inc. Is a 501(c)(3) corporation, and is a non-governmental, not-for-profit entity, qualified as a "public charity" with a social mission that is in the broad public interest. Transitcenter's mission is to encourage greater use of public transit. The benefits of public transit include, but are not limited to, an improved environment through reduced contributions to climate change and air pollution, sound urban development and economic prosperity, workforce access to jobs, and mitigated traffic congestion.
Programs: During 2014, transitcenter issued three major research reports, which gained national attention. The first was based on an extensive 12,000 person survey of public attitudes toward transit in over 40 metropolitan regions across the united states. This document titled, "who's on board", received coverage in over 30 media outlets. Next, transitcenter along with the eno center for transportation issued "the route of it," a study of transit governance systems in six metropolitan regions. Transitcenter sponsored a breakfast event at the city university of new york to release the document, with a panel of current and former transit agency ceos speaking. The third report, "subsidizing congestion," was issued in conjunction with the u. S. Public interest research group and analyzed the various incentives for commuting which can be granted via payroll systems. In june 2014, transitcenter was the lead financial sponsor of the summit for shared-use mobility, a two day conference held in washington dc and attended by over 200 participants in the transportation industry. In addition to these events and formal documents, transitcenter expanded its blog postings and introduced a twitter feed to disseminate more information about public transit via social media. Also in 2014, transitcenter made its initial grants to initiate products and events that would bear fruit in 2015, including sponsorship of a large conference on mobility scheduled for los angeles in february 2015 and additional events related to some of the 2014 publications.
