It's rare that a small theatre is run with such professionalism, earns such high praise, and attracts such unique talent, but The Starving Artist Theatre is an exception in all three areas. Its owner and director is committed to her staff and productions, sacrificing her personal time whenever it's required. The plays the theatre produces are high caliber, character-driven comedies and dramas that speak to the heart. And the actors the theatre and its director assemble for each production are some of the finest undiscovered talents in the area. I cannot recommend The Starving Artist Theatre enough!
I worked first as an actor in one of the Starving Artist's shows, and then directed their show for Fringe '10. Both were great experiences that showed a level of dedication and professionalism that is rare in small theater companies in the dc area.
I have attended many of the Starving Artist productions. It is extremely high quality theater in a very intimate environment. Anyone who is a fan of the arts and wants to see groundbreaking writing produced by up and coming local actors and actresses is in for a treat.
My husband and I have been to see every production by the starving artist theatre. Our favorite was the one act festival because of the great variety of theatre that was shown. We are always impressed by the talent and the emphasis on both local acting and writing. We are always glad to support this theatre group and hope to see more of their offerings!
My family and I have seen "To Catch a Man" and "A Replacement for Mr. Lucifer" as well as the series of one act plays this past summer. The plays are clever and had us rolling on the floor laughing. I most enjoyed "To Catch a Man" which was so true to life and brought back memories of my own. It is a timeless classic. We are impressed by the immense talent of the actors and their ability to use so few props and yet carry the audience into their world. They generally don't overact. Bravo Zulu! We can't wait to see more!
My husband and I have been to all except one of the Starving Artist Productions. We have been amazed by the calliber of talented actors and off broadway plays. For instance the play entitled "To Catch A Man" was incredibly funny. The first time we saw this production the playhouse was crowded and the laughter never stopped, we were all quite entertained and impressed by the flow of dialog and the quality of the acting. A few months later we noticed that the same production was advertized to play once again at another theater and with a somewhat different cast, we decided to go again even though we had already seen this play, but we wanted to see it again. We were not disappointed, in fact even though some of the original actors had changed, (we loved the first actors), the new actors were just as great, and the play once again wonderfully funny. We purchased the video and sent it to a sister in Naples FL, She and her husband "laughed until they cried", and then as they live in a gated community, they started viewing the play in their home for some of their visiting friends and family, all of whom also loved this particular play, even one who had been to many plays in New York, commented that this play compared to some of the plays they had seen. All in all we have really enjoyed having these productions to look forward to, and hope that the company will continue to make these productions available throughout the year. We have found it to be a very affordable date hight out.
The Starving Artist Theatre gave me my first professional theater experience in the DC area. They have always produced plays that are both challenging and fun to perform and watch.
I've watched Sage Costanzo build The Starving Artist from the ground up, and her passion, drive and committment to the arts has been inspiring to watch. The organization has put on several productions, giving new writers, actors and other background performers their first chance at a professional experience. The Starving Artist serves as a bridge for up-and-coming artists to the professional world and allows the audience the opportunity to see new performers on their way up!
I have been to several performances by The Starving Artist Theatre and enjoyed them all. There is a tremendous amount of talent amongst the play writers, actors and staging. I would recommend The Starving Artist Theatre to anyone.
I've worked with the Starving Artist for the past 3 years, and every experience has been a great one. There are very few people as passionate about giving artists a voice and opportunity as Sage, and her work with the Starving Artist is evidence of that. The theater gives new writers a place to showcase their work, and actors just starting out a place to stretch, grow, and learn more about themselves as performers in a professional atmosphere. The theater's dedication to new writers and performers is such an important quality in the arts scene, and plays such a vital role in the development of that community.
As part of my college education, I moved and studied in Washington D.C. from a small town in Ohio for a couple of months. Not only am I interested in politics, but also in performing. I searched for a theatre to get involved in and before I knew it, Sage Costanzo- founder of the Starving Artist Theatre Company, was meeting with me in Starbucks. Not only did she allow me the opportunity to be her "assistant" to her upcoming production, but eventually wrote me in a part. Sage is vividly passionate about her work and her actors. She works hard and produces terrific productions. She gave me a chance that several people never did. She helped legitimize my talent and work, which has opened several doors for me. Sage and the Starving Artist Theatre played an crucial part in helping me reach my dreams of becoming a professional performer. I will never ever forget everything I learned while I worked with the theatre. It was an unbelievable experience and THE highlight of my time spent in Washington D.C. It would be devastating if the theatre was unable to operate any longer and provide such unique opportunites to others due to funding.
I've been both a participant (as a performer) and an audience member of several Starving Artist Theatre's productions. I've nothing but a glowing review for this non-profit theatre company and its quality work and staff. As an actor, Starving Artist gave me my first professional acting opportunity. It exposed me to the rigor of the theatre at that level, as well as fueling the fire of passion for the stage and the craft. The Company gave me invaluable connection -connections that would have been otherwise next-to-impossible to come by- and opened doors for me professionally and artistically. As an audience member, I am consistently amazed by the quality of work and spirit that go into each Starving Artist production. Starving Artist genuinely serves to fill an important niche in the artistic community.
I have attended every Starving Artist production and each has been uniquely different, yet very entertaining. Many of the performing artists have moved on to promising theatre careers, which was the intent of the founder. She has propelled aspiring actors who have similar goals and demonstrate tenacity and drive in fulfilling their dreams. The Starving Artist Theatre is a breath of fresh air and I look forward to attending future performances.
The creativity on display in Starving Artist performances have been inspirational! The theater company is exemplary at breaking down real social issues experienced by the greater good into personal examples. I think every member of every audience of the theater can agree that they can relate to the topics touched on. And isn’t personal reflection the purpose of theater companies? Kudos to Starving Artist.
Bravo to The Starving Artist Theatre for providing a forum for emerging playwrights to have their work produced and performed before the public. Often, theatre companies will not take the risk of producing the work of first-time playwrights, but The Starving Artist Theatre shows how valuable these fresh new voices are to the public and the theatre community with often humorous, always compelling results.
I attended a festival at the theatre and loved it. The actors were in thier first professional job and the playwrights were fantastic. It was a great experience.
