This has been our experience with the Seacadets.
At first, my husband and I were impressed with our local Seacadet unit. My son was part of CAP, and felt like he really didn't learn much from them. Mind you, both of these organizations are ran by volunteers.
My son tried out CAP around six months and then heard about Seacadets. He wants to join the Navy when he's eighteen, so he decided to join and leave CAP.
The fees for Seacadets cost more than CAP and you also have to pay for advanced training as well.
My son really liked the program at the beginning. As time went on, it seemed like they weren't informing us about meetings and not telling my son what he needed to learn. They said their wasn't a book to go by to learn from.
He enjoyed the meetings when he was there, but then they started talking about advanced training and that he needed to have it so he could move up.
He is seventeen, so he want be able to go in with rank since he joined so late. We had no idea this program was even available in our area when we moved.
Since then, communication with the group is very poor. I have taken him to meetings before and no one is there!
Also, I have a feeling they will start leaving him out of certain activities because he wasn't able to go to the advanced training because he started a job.
I have no idea if things are going to get better. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
I'm not putting down the whole organization. Perhaps if we were with another unit things would have gone smoother. If it doesn't improve I'm out of my time, my son's effort, and money. One thing I'll it least get back is my sanity!

I joined NumbersUSA many years ago when, as a liberal, I was looking for an organization that reflected my concerns about the effect of our high rate of immigration on population increase and on low wages and high unemployment among blue collar and particularly black Americans without attacking or demeaning immigrants. I read a fine interview with Roy Beck in the New York Times and immediately joined. NumbersUSA explicitly condemns hostile views of immigrants and focuses its attention entirely on immigration policy. If you have followed Roy Beck's blogs on the NumbersUSA website you know that he has a lifelong commitment to civil rights and a particular concern for the economic well being of the most vulnerable Americans. As a former environmental journalist he is also concerned about the population increase being driven by immigration. NumbersUSA, as its website says, in concerned with the immigration rate, not who the immigrants are or where they come from. I'm an Old Left, Bernie Sanders liberal who voted for Barack Obama in 2008, and according to the New York Times, so did Roy Beck (Davis, 2014). NumbersUSA is the best source on the web for real immigration news (no, they don't print stuff about crimes by illegal immigrants, but they do report on bills introduced in Congress). NumbersUSA is a responsible and honest voice in an important national debate.

Davis, Julie Hirschfeld, 2014. Genial Force Behind Bitter Opposition to Immigration Overhaul: Roy H.
