Mission: Founded in 1881, the staten island museum, new york city's only general interest museum, engages visitors with interdisciplinary exhibitions and educational programs that explore the dynamic connections between natural science, art, and history based on its diverse collections. The museum is dedicated to making its current and future collections broadly accessible to educators, students, researchers, and the general public by providing authentic experiences in the field and at the museum.
Programs: Collections & exhibitions - the current museum collection ranges from all types of objects and artifacts related to science, art, archaeology, history, and the environment of staten island. Over 2 million objects, art works, archival documents, photographs, books, and specimens are held in this collection for all visitors to learn about, research, and enjoy.
public programs and education - since 1907, the museum has offered a wide variety of classes, exhibitions, and research programs. Every year, approximately 40,000 school children attend these programs to learn about art, natural science, and the cultural environment and history of s. I.
