I truly love working here at Seamen's Society. The work is extremely rewarding and I truly enjoy achieving the mission with my fellow colleagues! It has its good days and bad days--but what social service non-profit doesn't have that. I truly believe this organization has potential, as of right now we are going through a huge change especially with our current administration. But we will get there if you notice our social media presence has risen!
Pros
The staff is like my extended family!
Cons

Seamen's Society for Children and Families is a great place to work. The mission to provide the highest quality or services to the community is the attitude that the staff and clients of Seamen's Society live by. I'm witness to that, every day I am amazed to see my fellow staff members strive to be the best that they can be. Sometimes it does get frustrating but we remember the children and that always brings a smile to ou faces. We are heading in a new direction and we are only going up from here! To the staff of Seamen's Society, it is always such an honor to work with you all. We are FAMILY!

Seamen's is an extremely troubled place, with rapid turnover and a management team that is out of touch with clients and staff. They recently fired the CEO and have a temp doing the job who is trying without much success to make a difference. The COO and director of Human Resources are unethical and unprofessional. Do not recommend working here though the clients are wonderful. This workplace is simply too stressful and unprofessional a place to be associated with.

The most horrible experience of my life. No one there helps you. Horrible case worker good luck in trying to get information from anyone or trying to talk to anyone. The worst are the supervisors nasty rude and heartless! Couldn't care about the children at all! If you are thinking about changing a child's life think again because you will only end up ruining your own!Absolutely no support miserable place

I was told to write about my current experience working here at Seamen's Society for Children and Families. It has it's good days and bad days--but what social service non profit doesn't have that. I truly believe this organization has potential, as of right now we are going through a huge change especially with our current administration. The board of trustees finally fired that imbecile, Bill Sabado who was just filled with nonsense of ideas that cannot be attain. Eventually he was let go on his big fat a**, and they brought in a interim CEO who has wonderful leadership skills and is trying his best to fix Seamen's Society. Even though, we are not going to have the interim CEO for long, the board of Trustees is still in the process of finding a permanent CEO. I love working with my colleagues we all aspire to get the job done, and that is the most important thing.

We are extremely happy with the new direction we have decided to take, but there is no need to bash the previous administration. We wish him nothing but the best in the future. As for Seamen's Society, we will continue to provide the highest quality services in the community to strengthen and preserve families so that children and adults have the opportunity to realize their full potential. Be Blessed

Very nice place I've been a avid donor for almost 10 years . The only thing I find wrong with Seamen's Society is their board members--where is the diversity?? You have a board -that does not reflect its diverse clients and staff members. That is the one thing this organization needs to fix. But overall, I truly believe in the mission of Seamen's Society and I hope they continue to grow.

I was hired by the organization in December 2016 as a case planner for the DV program. From the very beginning I had a good "vibe" about the agency. Compared to other agencies where I have worked I feel a sense of connection with the department I am assigned too. I look forward to coming to work everyday and meeting the challenges of helping our clients stay safe. Happy to be aboard......looking forward to the future with this agency.

“I have worked for Seamen's Society in Family Day Care for the past 30 years. I began as a part time case worker and here I am 30 years later as Director of Family Day Care. Allowing parents the opportunity to work or go to school by providing safe, quality child care is most gratifying. Parents who have had their children in one of our Provider's homes have come back to me years later to say thank you and to tell me how their child's experience in Family Day Care created a solid foundation for the future. Seamen's makes a difference in children's lives.”

This charity has a special place in my heart. I have been an active Board member for over 10 years and am very honored to see the fruits of our efforts. Our foster children benefit from our many programs and the guidance they are given in their college pursuits.

I hope that we receive the recognition so deserved for all the work given to our Agency and those in our care.

I have been involved with Seamen's Society since 1989. Nineteen of those years in the Development Department and the last two years as a volunteer. The services that Seamen's Society provides range from foster care, adoption, day care, domestic violence, prevention and education such as scholarships for college bound teens. The services the Society offers are priceless.

I had the honor of working with Seamen's Society for Children and Families in locating new space for their location in Brooklyn. Nancy Vomero is the consummate professional. Her concerns were first and foremost about the children and what was best for them and their families. We worked on safety issues making sure and remaking sure that all would be the safest that it can be for all associated with the Society. I have been a real estate broker for 30 years and have worked with many non-prof executives and Nancy was the most giving and upfront that I had the pleasure to work with. Her staff are equally as dedicated and it was obvious that the respect was mutual.
Bravo to all of you at Seamens and may you continue your success stories in your new space!

I am a new board member of Seamen's Society but have volunteered in the medical department of the agency for over 2 years. I have been impressed with the dedication of the staff and their commitment to the well being of the children. The staff works closely with the foster parents to help provide optimum medical care for the children by addressing medical concerns, help foster parents provide the needed medical care and assist foster and biological parents understand the medical issues the children face.

The agency is not only provides foster care for at risk children but has programs designed to teach life skills and promote education. The scholarship program sponsored by the agency is especially inspiring. Children formerly in foster care have graduated from college and return to the agency to share their successes with others.

In addition the agency has several programs designed to prevent at risk children from entering the foster care system.

Children in the foster care system can be at risk for mental health . issues. The agency offers psychological services for the children and their families thereby strengthening the ability of the children and families to meet the challenges they face.

The work this agency does to provide care for vulnerable children is a great service to our community. The strains on at risk families in this economic time are great. The agency provides support and tangible assistance through their many programs.

Ihave been a Board Member for over ten years and I am tremendously proud of the work that is done at Seaman's Society. While our mission is to help place and evaluate foster homes, we also deal with issues such as teenage runaways, domestic violence intervention, medical services and college scholarships for the children assigned to our care, just to name a few. Seaman's Society is there when a child and family are in need and they have nowhere else to turn. I know that we have been able to give these children and families a second chance and even a third chance, a service that is invaluable.

I have been a board member of Seamen's since 1988. I have worked under three Executive Directors and I think that Seamen's is an extremely well run organization. The knowledge, expertise and dedication that is exhibited by the staff is second to none.

They truly understand not only the not-for-profit business in which they are engaged, but, more importantly, how that business is making such a tremendous difference in the lives that they touch in foster care, day care, prevention, and the myriad smaller programs which come under their purview.

Seamen's Society is the epitome of what a well-run human services agency is all about.

I have been a board member and have served on various committees for several years. What has drawn me to Seamen's is their commitment to helping our disadvantaged children have an opportunity to have a better life. There are so many programs from Foster Care to Mentoring, that they are able to have a positive impact on virtually any at-risk child. To me, the work that is done culminates in the scholarship program, where we get to see the results of many years of hard work. Kids that never thought they had a chance are becoming engineers, doctors or whatever they dream to be because of the staff and volunteers at Seamen's Society.

as a life long resident of staten island i have seen the growth of the seaman's society over the years and the great expansion of their services on staten island. they are a solid organization doing many great things for the children in need in our area. back in the 1980's i was the postman delivering mail to their office on tompkinas avenue, and the office was always bustling with young people needing help and the employees meeting their needs. they have come a long way from that time and do so much more for the needy. they deserve a lot of credit for the work they do.

As busy as I am managing my own company, I always find the time for this organization. I have been a Board Member for almost 8 years and enjoy my role in offering services to our foster children and victims of domestic violence.

Our Scholarship Luncheon is probably my favorite event as we give college scholarships to worthy students from our program. This past year we gave 20 scholarships and after meeting the recipients, we certainly chose wisely. With all that they have endured it was amazing to see not only smiles on their faces but hearts filled with a true sense of hope for their futures.

If you care to give to a charity, this certainly should be one that you consider. Our future depends on our children.
