Mission: The mission of off our backs is to provide news and information about women's lives and feminist activism; to educate the public about the status of women around the world; to serve as a forum for feminist ideas and theory; and to seek social justice and equality for women. We make special efforts to reach women who are not normally privy to feminist media such as rural women, third world women, women in prison, lesbians, women of color and poor women.
Programs: Publication: the primary purpose to educate the public, both nationally and internationally, about women's struggle for equality all over the world. Internship Program: to encourage and promote women students successfully entering into careers of journalism and publishing and promote the equal representation of women journalists and writers in the media. International Outreach and Linkage: to investigate to stories and information about women's struggles the world over and make that information accessible to women in the U.S. and elsewhere. Also, provide free copies of publication to women's centers and lesbian organizations throughout the developing world. Create action alerts on crisis situations for emergency support. Prison Outreach Program: Free subscriptions to any prisoner in any country. Community Education Program: educate the public about the condition of women and movements for equality for women both in this country and around the world. Also host national and local listservs for community activists.
