Programs: Residential habilitation program - individual residential alternatives (ira)see schedule othe 28th president of the united states, woodrow wilson, once said "you are not here merely to make a living. You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. " our mission coincides with this statement as, each and every day, the arc of ulster-greene works hard and diligently "to offer people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities opportunities to live and experience full lives. " with our residential habilitation program, we are able to give the men and women that we support the sense of independence that comes with living on your own. This sense of independence begins within the residences where we strive to provide a comfortable and autonomous environment. A huge factor in comfort and autonomy is personal space. A prime example of this would be our clintondale ira, which has been undergoing construction that will result in the addition of a sixth bedroom. This addition will give each of the ladies residing in the house their own bedrooms. In addition to personal space, learning important tasks, such as cooking simple and healthy meals, completing chores around the home, as well as how to budget and save, have all aided in the achievement of self-sufficiency. Our residences range from small apartments to large houses, with over 250 people residing in them. Therefore, it's also important that we assist these men and women in forming relationships with one another - in whatever capacity they feel comfortable. Attending yankee games, visiting the albany aquarium, going bowling, or exploring new york via hudson river cruises, these are just some ways that they've been able to go out with each other and to bond over common interests. We also host events such as loft parties, holiday gatherings, and formals where everyone can eat, dance, and socialize. Aside from forming relationships with one another, it is just as important to form strong community relations, so we always seek ways to allow those that we support to be involved within their neighborhoods. We find that one of the greatest ways to be involved is through acts of kindness. A resident of the scardefield ira residence not only shovels his own house snow when there's a big snowfall, but he also shovels for his neighbor next door, whereas the men at the linnabary ira residence enjoy baking cookies and delivering them to the local police department. In our glasco house, the residents have built relationships with local farmers through purchasing plants, flowers, and decorations. Practicing of faith has also led to deepening community relations, as one woman not only attends church services, but has also joined bible study. Another resident likes to carry the torah whenever he attends the woodstock jewish congregation. Whether it is taking on the responsibilities of everyday life, acquiring skills that will aid in the achievement of self-sufficiency, or forming relationships with both the people inside and outside of their residences, the men and women that we support continue to grow immensely within our residential habilitation program. The staff at the arc of ulster-greene work day and night to ensure that every individual is as comfortable, independent, and happy as possible.
day habilitation program see schedule oin addition to our residential habilitation program, the arc of ulster-greene offers a day habilitation (day hab) program. This program is designed to give the men and women that we support a weekly routine that will fulfill a sense of commitment and purpose that one would normally feel from holding a standard job. New york times bestselling author dean koontz said "i really believe that everyone has a talent, ability, or skill that he can mine to support himself and to succeed in life. " our day habilitation program supports that statement by capitalizing on an individual's capabilities and giving them opportunities to acquire new skills. We offer traditional day hab, day hab at home, and day hab without walls. Day hab without walls removes the confinements of a building. Offering specific clubs and groups, such as book club, science club, art group, and volunteer group, participants can focus on topics and activities that interest them and from which they can grow immensely. At our highland day hab location, one participant worked very hard with the staff to become more independent by increasing his abilities to complete chores around his home. He now successfully waters the plants, sets the table, and delivers the mail on his own. Other individuals have been learning spanish or sign language, while some have taken an interest in researching history and state facts on the computer. Our wawarsing day hab location has somewhat of a different approach by focusing largely on community exploration and projects. The participants here have visited many attractions, such as the walkway over the hudson, mohonk preserve, and the various rail trails that the hudson valley offers. They're also regular patrons of local businesses, from the new paltz comic book store to joe's wash and go carwash, to spin city laundromat. When they're not exploring, however, they are giving back to the community. Whether repackaging food for distribution to the needy, or volunteering at the sullivan county society for the prevention of cruelty to animals (spca) or the orange county humane society, the wawarsing day hab constantly finds ways to help those in need. In order to maximize the benefits of our day habilitation program, we hold program meetings twice a month where participants can advocate for activities and lessons to be added to the schedule. The learning and growth in these programs are limitless, which greatly contributes to the men and women that we support living full and quality lives.
