Causes: Public & Societal Benefit
Mission: New york appleseed advocates for integrated schools and communities in new york city and new york state. With evidence-based advocacy and close work with stakeholders, we achieve direct impact in the community and beyond. We extend and magnify this impact across north america through participation in the appleseed network. Integrated schools and communities are those that:- achieve racial, ethnic, and economic diversity in composition;- appoint leadership representative of this diversity;- facilitate relationships across people of different backgrounds;- practice restorative justice; and- share equitable access to resources and opportunities.
Programs: School diversity project: new york appleseed advocates for integrated schools and communities in new york city and new york state. Specific activities include:- support for community school districts seeking strategies to preserve the diversity of their schools in rapidly gentrifying areas of new york city;- partnering with district-wide task forces for community school districts in new york city to investigate and address the issue of school segregation in some of the most rapidly gentrifying school districts in new york city;- monitoring the implementation of the school diversity accountability act; and- sponsoring educational events on school diversity and demographic change.
general program: includes all programmatic activities not under the auspices of the other school diversity project, including advocacy for integrated communities. These included projects relating to educational equity such as advocacy for new higher-education admission standards, partnering with a community-based organization on advocacy surrounding a museum in brooklyn, participating in roundtables of housing and integration advocates, and exploratory research on equity issues relating to parent-teacher associations.
