I have been volunteering with Literacy GB for years. I've never had a bad experience. I've tutored women from Belarus and have felt nothing but joy. If I have any questions at all, be it about a method of teaching, materials to use, or whatever, those at Literacy have been there to help me. The first woman I taught now has a managerial position at her job, with people beneath her. She is so happy!

I've been tutoring through Literacy Green Bay for years. I have found it very worthwhile. My first student now has a full time desk job. I'm tutoring her sister and we're having a great time. Literacy is always there when I need something, be it advice or materials. I highly recommend them. And they're all so nice!

My husband was able to volunteer with Literacy Green Bay while he was working on his Masters. He was able to share some of the stories of Mom's and Dad's that he worked with finding life sustainable jobs.

I have had experience connecting with individuals and their grown children that have had challenges moving to our community with the barrier of speaking, reading or writing in English. They were experienced engineers, government officials, and project managers in their homelands and come here to find that they can only work as unskilled labor because of the literacy barrier.

Literacy Green Bay provides a bridge for them to find their way back. Thank you for all you do!

I start from Strach without speaking the language, without knowing the culture far from my family and friends! But LITERACY GREEN BAY helped me achieve my goals and pursue my dreams. English classes, tutoring sessions and citizenship. The organization assisted me on the whole process of my new life here! From 2017 ELL student to 2022 director board member! I started volunteering with Literacy Green Bay Inc just about a year ago, and it has been a wonderful experience! The opportunities that this non-profit gives to the community are so, so important in my opinion. This organization helps adults in the community acquire the language skills they need to be able to be proficient and follow a wide variety of their personal goals! I think is such an important tool and opportunity for people. I have been able to tutor a gentleman and we've been working together as he continues to follow his professional goals and has returned to college! To increase his English language skills as well as the skills he would need in order to follow his dreams as an engineer. Without Literacy Green Bay, he has expressed how challenging this whole process would've been, as well as overwhelming. This is my personal story, but there are so many other volunteers and students like my case scenario in the greater Green Bay Area.

I have volunteered with Literacy Green Bay for the last year. I tutored a native-born American who could not read or write, and now I tutor an immigrant from Central America who is learning English. Literacy Green Bay holds periodic training sessions taught by enthusiastic teachers who help non-teachers like myself become confident in our ability to tutor. It maintains an extensive library of resources to supplement whichever curriculum we are using. It holds classes for beginning students, and even provides child care. The cheerful staff is always available for questions from students and tutors alike. It is a great community resource which is especially valuable as we welcome newcomers who seek to improve their language skills.

Literacy Green Bay is a wonderful service provider for persons needing assistance to function effectively and adjust within our American society. I was trained a year and a half ago and paired with a woman whose goals were to "fit in" better with speaking in English conversations in this new country. She continues to be very excited to meet to practice and to learn. I find that I am also learning a lot by working with her. It's a win-win situation personally, and for our city, state and nation. I find that the team at Literacy Green Bay is there to assist the volunteer at every turn. The support is great. More volunteers are needed. Check it out.

I am impressed by the focused and hard work of the staff. They truly feel passionate about the work they do. The staff of teachers is multi-cultural,(which is awesome) and people are excited to explore best practices for adult learners .This staff truly recognizes just how challenging it is to be a non-English speaking person in Green Bay, and they are willing to jump into the challenge! I just started as a substitute teacher for the English Language Learning classes. As an instructor with Literacy Green Bay, I've witness the excitement our students have to be here to learn English. They come in the morning or after work, dedicated to practice speaking, reading, and writing new words, skills, knowledge, and concepts. Regardless of their native language, our students help each other. Most importantly, their confidence grows as fast as their English skills grow.
Hmmmm.... I don't recall having as much fun as they do when I learned English as a child...
Knowing that I can use my education, experience, and time to help our students reach their goals is extremely rewarding. I am proud to tell people in the community, my family and friends that I teach here. I recommend it to business owners who have employees who are struggling with English so that they can benefit from the programs provided.
Literacy Green Bay empowers a diverse population in our community, serving men and women of all ages, races, ethnicities, employment interests, etc., to be more. They provide programs to build essential skills, such as reading, writing, math, computer, English Language, and workforce, that are used everyday and taken for granted by most people. This is pure gold. This is what makes Literacy Green Bay such an asset to our community as a whole; to our neighbors, co-workers, families, and friends - to the stranger who waits on you at your favorite restaurant or is assigned your new partner at work. Their is no other organization in Green Bay, or Brown County area, that provides all the services and programs that we do.
I'm grateful to be apart of Literacy Green Bay.

Green Bay Literacy helps people improve the quality of their lives by training volunteer mentors and pairing them with adult learners who need to improve their English language skills, need to obtain their high school GED, or need to pass the exam for US citizenship. These skills can change lives through better and higher-paying jobs, and through opportunities for increased education and career training. Green Bay Literacy students also help our wider community by being able to better share their skills and talents through improved communication skills. It's a win-win!

Literacy Green Bay helps English language learners break down communication barriers, achieve educational degrees, and improve the quality of life for themselves, their families, and for our community! I have enjoyed sharing my English language skills with three learners from the countries of India, Mexico, and Italy. My learner from India earned two job promotions the first year we worked together because of his new ability to share his thoughts and skills through written memos and discussions. My learner from Mexico is working hard to earn her GED so that she can get a better job. My learner from Italy, who worked as a registered nurse before coming to the US, maintained a 4.0 average while earning a paraeducator degree from NWTC. She can now help students in our community schools learn and succeed. My own life has been enriched by learning firsthand about my learners' cultures, tasting the delicious foods they prepare, and sharing in their traditional family celebrations. Literacy Green Bay changes lives for the better!

I have been passionate about literacy for years. I began volunteering at Literacy Green Bay in 2016. the classes and tutoring availability here is mazing. Learners come here to learn or improve their English skills, they study to obtain their GED, they study to be prepared and able to pass the US Citizenship test, or they come here needing to improve their math skills.
Incorporating the entire family as we do in the Family First program is a great way for the kiddos to learn early the importance of literacy. My last learner repeated high school here as a good way to better her English, she moved on to NWTC and then to UWGB! She graduates in May 2022! Due to her experiences in learning English, she is obtaining a degree in teaching with an emphasize on ELL students. She is already employed FT. And to top that all off, she obtained her US citizenship test! She could not have done this without the help she received at Literacy Green Bay.

Hi Everyone,

I have been employed at Literacy Green Bay since 1999. Not many people can say they have worked at a place for so long. The reason I have stayed is because I believe in our mission of helping people learn to read and speak English and to help native English speakers improve their literacy skills. Along the way, I hope to have passed along my love of reading to our students. Literacy Green Bay is a welcoming place for new and returning students and we offer childcare so that we are able to make attending class easier for our students. It is a joy to meet students from all over the world and to work with people who are so eager to learn.

My mother, Marie Fonder, was a volunteer with the Literacy Council for 23 years. During that time, she tutored, did evaluations and served as a teaching assistant in the classroom. Mom loved meeting the people she worked with and especially admired the immigrants who had traveled far to find a better way of life for themselves and their families. In spite of her gift of time, Mom frequently said that she received more than she gave and treasured her moments with those whom she met.

I first volunteered as a tutor at Literacy Green Bay in 2008, and a couple of years later I took on an additional role doing testing, interviewing, and advising about curriculum placement of new students who were applying for tutors. It has been a most interesting and enriching experience to be able to meet and learn about the applicants who come from a great diversity of cultures, language backgrounds, and life experiences. Most of these people are immigrants or refugees, but a smaller number are native-born Americans who for whatever reason never developed good reading and writing skills. Invariably, they are all so appreciative and grateful for the services offered at Literacy Green Bay. The various programs offered, including one-on-one tutoring, classes, citizenship preparation, and a computer lab, make it possible to find the best option for each student. I have been tutoring adult students for 10 years at Literacy Green Bay and this spring reached the milestone of 1,000 hours of tutoring. I have had the pleasure of tutoring three adults, all from Mexico, and am currently tutoring Maria. My background in newspaper work and my limited knowledge of the Spanish language have helped me, but tutors are well trained and don't need similar backgrounds. I have learned so much from my students, and my wife and I have been friends with all my students. We have been invited to many Mexican family gatherings, including baptisms, first communions and a quinceanera. I highly recommend tutoring as a way to give back to your community. I have been a tutor for about 20 years at Literacy Green Bay. Having not been a teacher, I was unsure of my value to students initially. However, the friendships with students from many different countries and the support of the staff have made me feel of value in this volunteer opportunity. I am always happy to share my experiences with others in the hope they may want to experience what I have. Literacy Green Bay, its staff and volunteers provides a valuable contribution to the community.

As a long-term volunteer, I have seen the very important change that improved literacy makes. Parents get better jobs, children achieve more in school, a family can realize a bigger dream. Our clients are served with energy by learner-focused teachers and tutors. It’s an amazing program and it’s my great privilege to participate.

I've been a tutor at Literacy Green Bay for close to two years, and currently work with two students who have very different learning needs. It's been rewarding to help them work on achieving their goals. They are appreciative and determined, and understand the importance of reading/writing/etc. on their daily lives.

I currently serve on the board of directors for Literacy Green Bay and no other organization in the area has a great impact in achieving it's mission to help someone better their lives through adult literacy. The stories that are told from it's students on how their lives have changed as a result of attending classes at Literacy Green Bay are inspiring and in today's political climate, it is very refreshing to hear such success in achieving the American Dream!

I joined the Board of Directors for Literacy Green Bay in 2017. During my time with the organization, I have been continually impressed by the commitment of the team and all of our volunteers in advancing the mission of creating a community literate in the English language in Green Bay, WI. Even more so, I am truly moved by the dedication our English Language learners display on their pursuit of personal improvement through language courses, continuing education, and/or citizenship. By being part of this organization, you can feel the difference you are making.

Literacy GB is assisting our company in becoming a more diverse company. They have provided us guidance and completed an assessment to help us with our language needs. They made it a point to learn as much about our business and industry as they could to provide the right amount of guidance. About three years ago I signed up for a tutor training session at Literacy Green Bay Inc. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I had a vague feeling of wanting to "give back", "to be of service", and "to make a difference". I stepped forward, unsure of what this would look like or if I would even be able to do it. The training I received was thorough and is ongoing. The staff and other volunteers from Literacy were (and are) really terrific. They have given me so many tools and resources to help me in my tutor work and are always ready with an answer for any of my questions.
More than that, they are supportive in less tangible ways, giving me the confidence to move forward into new areas of learning. I will never forget a particular time when I ran into one of my tutor trainers in a city park. At the time, I was having some doubts about whether or not I was on the right path with my learner. She listened to my story, gave me advice and offered her encouragement. What a great conversation! And what a testament to the level of commitment and passion on the part of the staff and volunteers of this organization!
Of course, the real payoff with Literacy Green Bay comes from the relationships forged between matched tutor and learner. I am continually inspired by the efforts of my learner to better himself in order to make a better life for his family. He works difficult hours at his job and in his studies, and yet maintains such a great attitude of optimism and hope. When I witness his efforts, it makes me want to "double-down" on my commitment to this organization and especially to his learning.
My time at Literacy Green Bay Inc has been more rewarding than I could ever have imagined when I began almost three years ago. I plan to continue volunteering with this organization for a long time and strongly encourage others to consider doing the same.

I have been a board member of Literacy Green Bay for more than two years , and prior to that was a tutor for several years. Literacy Green Bay provides a valuable service in the greater Green Bay community, providing English language instruction to learners of many national backgrounds, and basic reading and writing skills to American-born adults who lack those skills. All the learners are seeking a better life for themselves and their families, and realize that a knowledge of English is essential. Literacy Green Bay provides classes and individual one-on-one tutoring...and both the tutors and learners are dedicated and passionate. The organization is extremely well-run on a minimal budget, due to the dedication of its staff and volunteers. Lise G

Now I am able to pick up a newspaper to read and I can shop in stores without help reading the labels.

I have worked as a tutor and also do initial evaluations on students new to the agency and periodic revaluations to check on progress. I have worked with "helping agencies" all of my adult life and can proudly say that the efforts at Literacy Green Bay are truly transformative for our clients. It is so refreshing to be working with individuals that are motivated to the "nth" degree to improve their lives and the lives of their families. It is amazing to see individuals tackle and master the near impossible - learning the English language! It is also refreshing working with colleagues who are so selfless in their efforts in working with their students. I have volunteered with Literacy Green Bay as a tutor and materials writer. The staff at Literacy Green Bay are hard-working, dedicated, and concerned about everyone who walks through their doors. Students who have gone through a language or test preparation program talk about how their lives were changed because they could get their GED, take the citizenship test, find a better job, talk with their childrens' teachers, and navigate the healthcare system, among other tasks. Volunteers also benefit from professional development sessions, friendships developed with the staff and students, and in the case of one young woman I know who helped with childcare, finding her field of university study--English as a Second Language. Literacy Green Bay truly benefits all those involved with the organization.

From 2008-2013, I was a volunteer tutor at Literacy Green Bay for a delightful student from Mexico. If I hadn't left the Green Bay area, I would still be tutoring there. Nevertheless, I am trying to contribute to the organization from a distance by overseeing a materials development project taken on by a university MATESOL student. The reasons I remain connected to Literacy Green Bay and would like to help the organization are many. Literacy Green Bay provides a valuable service to those people wanting to improve reading skills, learn English, study for the GED, or prepare for citizenship. Having better educated residents, in turns, helps the greater Green Bay area. Above all, the programs at Literacy Green Bay are well-organized and pedagogically sound. The small staff who make everything happen are very dedicated and professional. They provide training, ongoing assistance, and professional development to all their volunteer tutors and always with enthusiasm and a smile. We have many volunteers that donate several hours of their week to Literacy Green Bay and it shows...we have a great success rate of students achieving their goals, they are offered jobs, receive promotions and many have learned to read to their children in English. We are also helping adults receive their GEDs, which allows them to apply for better jobs, which results in better wages for them and their families. If you can't read, it is hard to succeed; we help people read and write so that they can accomplish all their dreams and goals! I was attracted to the Literacy GB board of directors because it was a chance to become involved in an organization tackling a fundamental issue for NE WI. Literacy GB gives the students a chance to improve the english (and other) skills that are crucial for their advancement in their educational and workforce careers. While area classrooms and workplaces benefit from better communication, the whole community benefits from the increased opportunities for day to day human interaction.

As Green Bay moves forward through the changing social and economic patterns of the mid-21st century, we have to strengthen our community by increasing the cooperation and interaction between the diverse cultural and ethnic groups. Removing language barriers and allowing involvement in work and school life are key to pulling the community together.

The staff and tutors are dedicated to the cause and it shows.

There are not many organizations within Green Bay that provide the type of services that Literacy Green Bay does that can essentially change the lives of the participants which in essence, reshape the community that we live in.

Literacy Green Bay not only provides participants with skills training in many areas but also the encouragement that is necessary to help individuals want to become better parents, employees as well as community members.
