This is a school where all feel home. We, teachers, have got all the resources available for us so that the the learning process is at best. Environment is safe and healthy that it creates a great impact on both students and teachers. Also, we are blessed with a great use of technology that keeps us on the top. I just started as a substitute teacher for the English Language Learning classes. As an instructor with Literacy Green Bay, I've witness the excitement our students have to be here to learn English. They come in the morning or after work, dedicated to practice speaking, reading, and writing new words, skills, knowledge, and concepts. Regardless of their native language, our students help each other. Most importantly, their confidence grows as fast as their English skills grow.
Hmmmm.... I don't recall having as much fun as they do when I learned English as a child...
Knowing that I can use my education, experience, and time to help our students reach their goals is extremely rewarding. I am proud to tell people in the community, my family and friends that I teach here. I recommend it to business owners who have employees who are struggling with English so that they can benefit from the programs provided.
Literacy Green Bay empowers a diverse population in our community, serving men and women of all ages, races, ethnicities, employment interests, etc., to be more. They provide programs to build essential skills, such as reading, writing, math, computer, English Language, and workforce, that are used everyday and taken for granted by most people. This is pure gold. This is what makes Literacy Green Bay such an asset to our community as a whole; to our neighbors, co-workers, families, and friends - to the stranger who waits on you at your favorite restaurant or is assigned your new partner at work. Their is no other organization in Green Bay, or Brown County area, that provides all the services and programs that we do.
I'm grateful to be apart of Literacy Green Bay.

Green Bay Literacy helps people improve the quality of their lives by training volunteer mentors and pairing them with adult learners who need to improve their English language skills, need to obtain their high school GED, or need to pass the exam for US citizenship. These skills can change lives through better and higher-paying jobs, and through opportunities for increased education and career training. Green Bay Literacy students also help our wider community by being able to better share their skills and talents through improved communication skills. It's a win-win!

Literacy Green Bay helps English language learners break down communication barriers, achieve educational degrees, and improve the quality of life for themselves, their families, and for our community! I have enjoyed sharing my English language skills with three learners from the countries of India, Mexico, and Italy. My learner from India earned two job promotions the first year we worked together because of his new ability to share his thoughts and skills through written memos and discussions. My learner from Mexico is working hard to earn her GED so that she can get a better job. My learner from Italy, who worked as a registered nurse before coming to the US, maintained a 4.0 average while earning a paraeducator degree from NWTC. She can now help students in our community schools learn and succeed. My own life has been enriched by learning firsthand about my learners' cultures, tasting the delicious foods they prepare, and sharing in their traditional family celebrations. Literacy Green Bay changes lives for the better!

Literacy Green Bay's mission is one that immediately improves the lives of its beneficiaries and the community as a whole. It is so important that our community's citizens feel integrated and accepted in their daily lives--among other things, this allows non-native speakers to make tangible advancement in their lives. We're all in this together, and Literacy Green Bay fosters exactly that type of cohesion.

I started volunteering at Literacy GB in February, 2019, as a tutor, after I retired. Then in April of that year, I also started volunteering in the offices doing general office work. I am no longer a tutor but have continued "working" in the offices, which I enjoy very much. The employees who work there are very welcoming and I know appreciate what I do as a volunteer. I have made friends at Literacy and feel a part of the organization, which I know performs a great service in the community. Grasping a better knowledge of the English language, when you now live in the US after immigrating, is a great thing.

It has been inspiring to see LGB transform it's model during the pandemic to continue providing necessary literacy services to the adults and families they serve. Never once taking it's eye off it's mission- staff and volunteers stepped up to the task - embracing the key role they play in student's lives. Huge thank you for the 40 years of successfully and selflessly serving the Green Bay community!!

I have been passionate about literacy for years. I began volunteering at Literacy Green Bay in 2016. the classes and tutoring availability here is mazing. Learners come here to learn or improve their English skills, they study to obtain their GED, they study to be prepared and able to pass the US Citizenship test, or they come here needing to improve their math skills.
Incorporating the entire family as we do in the Family First program is a great way for the kiddos to learn early the importance of literacy. My last learner repeated high school here as a good way to better her English, she moved on to NWTC and then to UWGB! She graduates in May 2022! Due to her experiences in learning English, she is obtaining a degree in teaching with an emphasize on ELL students. She is already employed FT. And to top that all off, she obtained her US citizenship test! She could not have done this without the help she received at Literacy Green Bay.

Hi Everyone,

I have been employed at Literacy Green Bay since 1999. Not many people can say they have worked at a place for so long. The reason I have stayed is because I believe in our mission of helping people learn to read and speak English and to help native English speakers improve their literacy skills. Along the way, I hope to have passed along my love of reading to our students. Literacy Green Bay is a welcoming place for new and returning students and we offer childcare so that we are able to make attending class easier for our students. It is a joy to meet students from all over the world and to work with people who are so eager to learn.

I am fortunate to work at Literacy Green Bay and get to hear all the success stories of the students. Some of the successes could be: becoming a citizen, getting their GED, and even getting a library card. You can see them building self-confidence growing with each hurdle they conquer. Thank you Literacy Green Bay for being a pillar in the community.

Literacy Green Bay is a perfect place to share my love of reading and desire to work with diverse people. Often, I feel like I Learn more from my learners than they learn from me!
The joy of walking together on the journey to English proficiency and beyond is truly one of the best things I can do with my time.

My mother, Marie Fonder, was a volunteer with the Literacy Council for 23 years. During that time, she tutored, did evaluations and served as a teaching assistant in the classroom. Mom loved meeting the people she worked with and especially admired the immigrants who had traveled far to find a better way of life for themselves and their families. In spite of her gift of time, Mom frequently said that she received more than she gave and treasured her moments with those whom she met.

Submitted by Barb Derenne, one of Marie's 7 daughters. Marie passed away on October 10, 2020.

Literacy Green Bay does more for their adult learners than just teach. This organization is deeply passionate about empowering our community's people, employees, families, and neighbors with an education that helps them chart their own path for a better life. They create opportunities for people to express themselves and thrive beyond the classroom. Literacy goes beyond reading - it is job skills, language learning, and feeling like you are an important part of your community. This organization should be proud of the gaps they fill in the lives of adult learners, and the community has immense amounts of gratitude for it.

I have been involved with Literacy Green Bay for close to four years as a volunteer tutor. From the first communication I had with the organization expressing interesting in becoming a tutor, everyone has been professional and helpful and that continues on today. Even when I had to step away from tutoring for a while, they were accommodating to my needs. The work they do with the adult learners is exceptional. Adult learners are reaching the goals they've set for themselves; earning their GED, advancing in their employment, or becoming US citizens. It's a great organization and one I'm very proud to be associated with and supportive of!

I have just started as a tutor at Literacy Green Bay. The required training program provided me with the information, tools, and confidence I needed to begin working with my first learner. She is a mother of 5 who desperately wants to improve her English speaking, reading and writing skills and has dreamed of getting an education her entire life. I am finding this to be such a rewarding experience. It is truly a privilege to be working with Literacy Green Bay to provide this much needed service to the people of our community.

Green Bay Literacy has been a great experience for this new tutor! I was trained in a very professional, informative, and courteous manner, and am happy to be sharing my knowledge/skills with my new learner. Within a few months, my learner has become more self-confident in her communication skills, and she is more capable than she thought in her writing proficiency! It’s an exciting transition to witness and share in. As an added bonus, I feel great to be helping in a really useful and tangible way.

I first volunteered as a tutor at Literacy Green Bay in 2008, and a couple of years later I took on an additional role doing testing, interviewing, and advising about curriculum placement of new students who were applying for tutors. It has been a most interesting and enriching experience to be able to meet and learn about the applicants who come from a great diversity of cultures, language backgrounds, and life experiences. Most of these people are immigrants or refugees, but a smaller number are native-born Americans who for whatever reason never developed good reading and writing skills. Invariably, they are all so appreciative and grateful for the services offered at Literacy Green Bay. The various programs offered, including one-on-one tutoring, classes, citizenship preparation, and a computer lab, make it possible to find the best option for each student. Literacy Green Bay is an invaluable asset to our Green Bay community.

I have been tutoring adult students for 10 years at Literacy Green Bay and this spring reached the milestone of 1,000 hours of tutoring. I have had the pleasure of tutoring three adults, all from Mexico, and am currently tutoring Maria. My background in newspaper work and my limited knowledge of the Spanish language have helped me, but tutors are well trained and don't need similar backgrounds. I have learned so much from my students, and my wife and I have been friends with all my students. We have been invited to many Mexican family gatherings, including baptisms, first communions and a quinceanera. I highly recommend tutoring as a way to give back to your community. You'll get as much out of it as your adult student.

I am a volunteer tutor for an adult English language learner. We meet 2x a week and converse together, because my learner's goal is to be a more fluent English speaker. I am also a volunteer member of the Board of Directors, serving as President for the third year. We have an active Board, striving to complete action items developed during last fall's strategic planning meetings. Literacy Green Bay has been in existence since 1981, providing valuation resources and programming to English-language learners, GED students, immigrants seeking citizenship, and other adults in search of fundamental literacy services to help improve their lives. Hundreds of volunteers support our cause as we help hundreds of adult learners every year!

I have been a tutor for 8 years, working with a woman from Mexico. She wanted to be able to speak, read, and understand English to better function in the US. She has met many of my goals for her, but not all of them for herself, so we continue to meet twice a week for 3 hours. The literacy organization makes my job easier by supplying materials and advice and a place to meet, plus sponsoring events throughout the year that help both the tutors and the students. They provide such an amazing service for the immigrants who want to fit into our society. I receive so much satisfaction from my interaction with my student and all the kind folks at Literacy Green Bay. I hope to be able to tutor for many years to come.

Literacy Green Bay provides opportunities for the community to grow. During my undergraduate at UW - Green Bay, I was able to spend a summer as an intern in an ESL classroom. About three years ago I signed up for a tutor training session at Literacy Green Bay Inc. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I had a vague feeling of wanting to "give back", "to be of service", and "to make a difference". I stepped forward, unsure of what this would look like or if I would even be able to do it. The training I received was thorough and is ongoing. The staff and other volunteers from Literacy were (and are) really terrific. They have given me so many tools and resources to help me in my tutor work and are always ready with an answer for any of my questions.
More than that, they are supportive in less tangible ways, giving me the confidence to move forward into new areas of learning. I will never forget a particular time when I ran into one of my tutor trainers in a city park. At the time, I was having some doubts about whether or not I was on the right path with my learner. She listened to my story, gave me advice and offered her encouragement. What a great conversation! And what a testament to the level of commitment and passion on the part of the staff and volunteers of this organization!
Of course, the real payoff with Literacy Green Bay comes from the relationships forged between matched tutor and learner. I am continually inspired by the efforts of my learner to better himself in order to make a better life for his family. He works difficult hours at his job and in his studies, and yet maintains such a great attitude of optimism and hope. When I witness his efforts, it makes me want to "double-down" on my commitment to this organization and especially to his learning.
My time at Literacy Green Bay Inc has been more rewarding than I could ever have imagined when I began almost three years ago. I plan to continue volunteering with this organization for a long time and strongly encourage others to consider doing the same.

I have been a board member of Literacy Green Bay for more than two years , and prior to that was a tutor for several years. Literacy Green Bay provides a valuable service in the greater Green Bay community, providing English language instruction to learners of many national backgrounds, and basic reading and writing skills to American-born adults who lack those skills. All the learners are seeking a better life for themselves and their families, and realize that a knowledge of English is essential. Literacy Green Bay provides classes and individual one-on-one tutoring...and both the tutors and learners are dedicated and passionate. The organization is extremely well-run on a minimal budget, due to the dedication of its staff and volunteers. Lise G

I have ben being tutered at Literacy Green Bay for six years. When I first started coming I could not read spell or write vary well.

We have ben reading story books, writing book reports, and using flash cards. We practes word lists . We use books like Specific Skill Series and we have started doing crosswerd puzzels since it seems to help whith my spelling although my teacher says I use "inventive" spelling.

Now I am able to pick up a newspaper to read and I can shop in stores without help reading the labels.

I have holped Literacy Green Bay by talking to new tuters about how evirything started whith me here.

It is so refreshing to be working with individuals that are motivated to the "nth" degree to improve their lives and the lives of their families. It is amazing to see individuals tackle and master the near impossible - learning the English language! It is also refreshing working with colleagues who are so selfless in their efforts in working with their students. Among the best nonprofit service organizations in our community is Literacy Green Bay. Although it is run by a small staff, the results they achieve are big acccomplishments. I have been affiliated with Literacy Green Bay for many years as a tutor and community business partner. Over that period, I have observed a high degree of dedication from the director and other managers; excellent communication between the staff and volunteer tutors; and exceptional educational support for tutors and learners. Through the efforts of Literacy Green Bay, learners achieve their goals and become better citizens of our community.
