My mother, Marie Fonder, was a volunteer with the Literacy Council for 23 years. During that time, she tutored, did evaluations and served as a teaching assistant in the classroom. Mom loved meeting the people she worked with and especially admired the immigrants who had traveled far to find a better way of life for themselves and their families. In spite of her gift of time, Mom frequently said that she received more than she gave and treasured her moments with those whom she met.
