Mission: Kid smart works through the arts to engage children in learning. Its focus is arts integration - linking instruction in the arts with instruction in the academic curriculum - to support student, teacher and school success.
Programs: Core programming: includes intensive work in 10 orleans parish public schools in which embedded professional teaching artists in long-term collaborative residencies and capacity-building for teachers and professional teaching artists mutually reinforce and strengthen arts integrated teaching that meets next generation academic standards. In residencies, teaching artists and teachers co-createand coteach instructional units, using common core standards for both arts and academic content. Units also target social and emotional growth objectives for students, creating joyful learning communities. Professional development opportunities include axis, a full-year, intensive arts integration professionaldevelopment program for as many as seventy-five teachers, individual coaching of teachers in theirclassrooms, school-based faculty workshops, and professional development for teaching artists.
model schools: in 2012-15, kid smart is engaged in an intensive project to implement all its program components in three participating schools, arise academy, behrman elementary and langston hughes academy, bringing them to model arts integrated status and building their capacity to sustain those gains into the future. The model schools initiative will implement arts integrated instruction across the entire curriculum in each school, in every class at four grade levels in academic years 2012-15. In addition to enhanced teaching artist residencies and increased participation in and frequency of current professional development programming, a corps of teacher/leaders will be trained in each school to sustain the schools arts integration capacity past 2015.
leadership: in fy 2013-14, kid smart lead the imagination, creativity and innovation (ici) artseducation reform initiative of the louisiana division of the arts, providing artist residencies andprofessional development in eight schools across the state as well as training for artists. Kid smartbuilds competency in the field-at-large through presentations at national conferences such as the johnf. Kennedy center, the mississippi arts commission, the tennessee create conference and alameda county/art is education, and project zero/harvard university. In 2014, kid smart lead the successful application to the kennedy center to participate in a city-wide arts education planning process, any given child. Kid smart developed with feeling, arts integrated curriculum to build student social emotional skills and support struggling k 4 students. Kid smart partners with local organizations to provide teaching artists for high quality after school arts programming.
