My husband and I got a kitty from a friend of mine at work. We were like adopted parents, just waiting for the day when we could hold our little fur baby. We finally got her, and when we took her to get spade, we found out she was a he! So Niska became Nico, and our baby boy was ours! He was the absolute cutest kitten I've ever seen in my life! He was the Gerber Baby of Kittens. Fast forward 7 months, and on the DAY before my birthday, little Nico suffered a blood clot and died in my arms. Heart meet break. My husband and I were devastated! Then a miracle happened. A lady my husband did work for was trying to give him a tip, and he said it was not necessary, but she insisted. She said what if I buy you a cat? He had told her the story about our little guy, and it moved her to tears. It had only been about a month since Nico died, but my husband agreed. That is how we came to discover River Cities Humane Society For Cats. For only $75 dollars, you get any cat you choose, and they already are spade/neutered and even have that microchip in them! The place was incredible! It was like Disney Land for cats! The room was one big kitty playground! And anyone is allowed to just come and visit the kitties, even if they don't want to buy one. The staff was SO amazing, too! They were so kind and friendly, just awesome! It was so obvious they took great care of all the kitties and took pride in their hard work. I have never seen a place like that! There were all kinds of kitties! They had kittens and cats, and they all had their own area to sleep and play. The room was so clean and smelled so fresh, I couldn't believe it with all the cats they had in there! ALL the cats were so well cared for it was hard to pick one because they all seemed so happy together! Seeing all the kitties at River Cities Humane Society For Cats was just so heart warming! We were undecided on which one we wanted because that day, there weren't any little kittens. All of them were about 5 months or so old. There was this one little guy that I had my eyes on and so did my husband. And it wasn't until another couple held him that I had my mind made up. He was coming home with us, not them! The staff even had names for all the kitties, and once we selected the little fur baby we wanted, they informed us of everything we needed to know about him. Everyone working there was so amazing, they could even describe the demeanors of each kitty. Ours was called a little snuggler! That is exactly what we wanted! They even gave us a take away bag full of cat stuff! It was like a swag bag for cats! They gave us all the health information we needed to know and so much more! They even gave us a bag of food that he was on and other little treats! Like I said, I never knew these type of places existed! River Cities Humane Society For Cats is truly a god send! I cannot speak highly enough about this place! If anyone is thinking about getting a kitty, go there! It's been about 2 months now since we got Buckley, and we could not be happier! He is exactly what we needed! We did not get him to replace our other kitty, we went there just to be around kitties, and we fell head over heels in love! There should be more places like River Cities Humane Society For Cats. They set the standard for how to treat rescued, abused, or just abandoned kitties! The staff goes above and beyond to take care of all the fur babies! I think that's one of the reasons Buckley is so sweet! He was raised with a family full of loving people and surrounded by other loved kitties. Thank you River Cities Humane Society For Cats for helping fill the hole in our heart!

I have served on the Board of Prevent Child Abuse Louisiana for 10 years and will continue as a volunteer when I role off. Why? We CAN prevent child abuse. What I love:
First, our executive director, Amanda Brunson is the best at leading this mission. She is passionate and dedicated to the cause. Professionally, Amanda is an authorized facilitator of Darkness to Light’s Stewards of Children program and the Nurturing Parenting Program. She is also a member of the Governor’s Children’s Cabinet Advisory Board and Erin’s Law Task Force. She has built a tremendous partner network around the state. And she has built a great staff.
Second, there is no cause more important than preventing child abuse, and this organization is the only one in the state dedicated to that cause. I can’t think of one that is more important than giving hundreds of thousands of innocent children a fighting chance at a happy and healthy childhood and adulthood. How many of people are coping with self-esteem problems, addictions, depression, criminal behavior, and a cycle of other poor choices as a result of being abused or neglected as a child? How many million Americans are suffering and how much money is being spent on their care? Those numbers will continue to rise every year if we as people and communities don’t do something about it. Prevention is the only answer. And PCAL is the organization to lead our parents and communities in getting it done.
