Mission: H. T. Dance company, inc. /chen dance center's programs and activities reflect its ongoing mission to provide moving experiences in asian-american arts and contemporary dance through artistic creation, arts education, and presentation.
Programs: H. T. Chen & dancers presented concerts, educational programming, touring and outreach. In 2016-2017, the company toured to hamilton college in oneida county, ny, to williams college in western ma, bennington college in vt, and to martha's vineyard in ma; reaching a diverse population of audiences in rural and urban areas. In nyc, the company presented family programs and an 8 week educational series of performances and workshops for young audiences at chen dance center. Professional dancers (p/t) and production staff (p/t) were employed for the seasonal programs.
school - year-round dance and music classes for apx 140 community children from chinatown and nyc were conducted at chen dance center with a professional faculty of 10 p/t instructors and p/t administrators. The school provided free after-school dance classes to 84 students over a 22 week period at ps42m - a title 3 public school in the lower eastside/chinatown. In addition, the school conducted 20 weeks of early childhood dance classes for apx 290 k-2nd grade students at ps42m.
theater - chen dance center presented showcase opportunities for emerging and independent choreographers, forums for asian-american artists, public events for the chinatown community, student showcases, and holiday programs. Admission ranged from $8-10 for students, $10 for seniors, and $12-25 per adult with an average of $14 per adult. Free tickets were distributed to chinatown schools for the educational matinee series. Professional lighting designers and p/t technical staff were employed for the various productions.
