Mission: The giants community fund collaborates with the san francisco giants by using baseball as a forum to encourage underserved youth and their families to live healthy, productive lives. The fund supports junior giants leagues throughout northern california, nevada and oregon and provides assistance to targeted community initiatives in the areas of education, health and violence prevention.
Programs: The junior giants program was established in 1994 as the fund's flagship program and currently serves over 25,000 boys and girls, ages 5 to 18 in more than 87 communities that span across northern california, oregon, and nevada. The program relies on over 5,000 volunteers and staff members to run the non-competitive leagues. The fund provides all of the uniforms, equipment, and training necessary to run a league as well as tickets to select san francisco giants games for the youth to experience major league baseball. The program focuses on the four bases of character development - confidence, integrity, leadership and teamwork.
the fund recognizes the important role that education plays in the lives of youth and offers numerous programs that reach out to students, teachers, and educational organizations. Programs include the harmon and sue burns scholars for college scholarships to eighth-graders participating in the junior giants program, the round the bases reading program, and education day at at&t park. The fund also provides grants to educational nonprofit organizations.
the fund has created a number of programs to address the violence prevention needs in the junior giants communities. These programs provide a forum for participants to discuss methods of preventing violence in their neighborhoods. The fund also partners with local organizations to host the annual strike out violence day at at&t park, the proceeds of which are used to benefit organizations offering support services for those affected by family violence.
