I have an update. In 2010 CLIR left the UC Berkeley Extension, San Francisco family. We still offer a discount on UCBX classes but are located across the street in our our suite of classrooms now. We offer a full compliment of free, daytime, peer taught classes & activities plus an optional program called Special Audiences through which members get free tickets to theater & music performances and lectures. I've been a member of CLIR for six years and can't imagine life without it. I spend a couple of days a week engaged in their classes and activities. CLIR is member (volunteer) managed and I've served on the Council which governs the organization. I've also served on the Walks, Tours, and Outreach, Committees. We get a 40% discount (up to $200 per semester) on UC Berkeley Extension classes, and have unlimited access to free, daytime, peer taught classes besides. Plus we have a picnic, an annual luncheon, an art show, several NoCal Day-Tours, and a holiday gala every year.

I have been a member of CLIR for 15 years, and it has been an important part of my life. The members, being people who are interested in continuing to learn, are all thoughtful, curious people with open minds. The combination of formal classroom courses and more informal discussion groups/seminars, plus social and cultural activities, provides something for everyone. The potluck food at the social hours is also a good draw! The location at 425 Market Street, is convenient to public transportation. CLIR is entirely member (volunteer) run. I have served on the governing Council and on various committees, and have enjoyed it all.
