Mission: Cec artslink promotes international communication and understanding through collaborative, innovative arts projects for mutual benefit. We support and produce programs that encourage the exchange of visual and performing artists and cultural managers in the united states and other parts of the world. As an international organization, we believe that the arts are a society's most deliberate and complex means of communication and that the work of artists and arts administrators can help nations overcome long histories of reciprocal distrust, insularity and conflict. Our organization was founded in 1962 to enable citizens of the united states and the soviet union to accomplish what their governments would not do - open doors, share ideas and build mutual trust. Our lasting partnerships abroad enable us to build and broaden our international reach, as today's transformed and complex world makes citizen diplomacy more urgently necessary than ever.
Programs: Artslink awardsartslink awards advances the mission through a program comprised of 3 synergetic areas: residencies which supported the 6 week stays at us arts organizations for 10 artists and arts managers from 10 eligible countries; artslink projects were temporarily suspended in 2017; the independent projects provided support for 3 projects in the us by artists from 3 eligible countries.
global art labthis program advances international understanding through the arts and is comprised of several initiatives. Arts leadership fellows are cultural practitioners from central asia, russia, and the caucasus who visit the us to learn first-hand about arts management practices. Another initiative is the art prospect festival of public art which in 2017 took place in baku, azerbaijan, and bishkek, kyrgyzstan. This year, we initiated two new components of art prospect - residencies and networks. The network was launched in 2017 in tbilisi, georgia and consists of 12 organizations and independent curators from participating countries. The art prospect residency program provides opportunities for artists and curators from participating countries to conduct research, create new work, collaborate with local arts communities, and create special projects in partnership with local arts organizations. The back apartment residences program has supported 14 artistic and curatorial residencies in st. Petersburg. Another project conducted in 2017 was playing together that brought four musicians from kazakhstan, kyrgyzstan, tajikistan and uzbekistan to bang on a can summer music festival at mass moca continuing our long-term collaboration with bang on a can.
