Mission: Care Wear Volunteers, Inc., began in 1991 as a personal effort to provide much-needed apparel for premature and low birth weight infants undergoing treatment in neonatal intensive care units in the DC area. Because of the huge demand for preemie-sized garments, the founder began to recruit others. In addition to preemie hats, booties, and mittens, volunteers now provide kimonos (specially designed for preemies), diaper shirts, blankets, burial gowns (unfortunately!) and bears/toys to local hospitals or to one of the 196 hospitals on the Care Wear listing. The organization received 501(c)(3) status in 1999 and has more than 1500 (nationwide) participants on its mailing list. A booklet of infant patterns, including hard-to-find preemie sizes, and a quarterly newsletter are sent to participants.
