As much as it breaks my heart to say this… do NOT do business with this organization! Chickenpox was a sweet boy but he is truly meant for a single dog household. We had to give him back because on day 5 he attacked our 10 year old Golden Doodle with no warning. She simply walked past him and he pounced and would not let go. There was no warning or prior incident that happened leading up to that. My husband had to lay on top of him until he finally needed a breath and released and then the dog went back after our doodle (who wouldn’t even fight back) and unfortunately my husband was bitten pretty badly. We took Chicken Pox back to Homeward Bound as instructed in the contract and told them the entire story. As a matter of fact, my husband was still full of blood when we arrived at the kennel with him. We felt dismissed when we tried to tell Jen, the director, that he should be an only dog, have a tall fenced area, and probably not be in a home with small children just in case however, hoped she would do the right thing. Well, she did not! He’s back up for adoption with the same EXACT bio that even states he’s “good with other dogs”. They should disclose the above info to not only protect other animals but him. They should want him to go to a home that would be right for him and his FOREVER home!!! This is an organization that’s out for money!!!! The kennels smelled horrendous the day we picked him up and you’re not allowed inside. Dogs come out filthy and scared to death. They claim to have pure bread dogs that they charge top dollar for which is not the case either. It’s sad for the dogs involved but stay away from Homeward Bound
*update… I received a phone call from Jen, the director, screaming at me because she felt I was calling her unethical because I questioned the fact that she reposted the dog with the same bio. She would not let me speak then hung up after her rant. Again, be careful and don’t adopt from this organization. She’s out for her own pockets not the dogs sadly.
If I could give zero stars I would. We adopted a puppy 8 days ago. He came to us with double ear infections and a crusty nose which turned out to be a bacteria respiratory infection. After paying $1300 in vet bills I reached out to them. They claimed they had no knowledge his poor health. They said the groomer did not notice his infected ears. That groomer must have no sense or smell and be blind. I could have diagnosed it. And he had not seen a vet since 6 weeks before we adopted him. Why didn’t anyone have his crusty nose from all the discharge checked? He also had such bad diarrhea that he had to go on Flagyl. Once on that antibiotic he began to eat. I cannot be more disappointed in an organization that is supposed to help pets. Our poor little sick puppy is now on 4 oral antibiotics and ear drops. The vet wanted to admit him but thought it might be better for him to recover in his new home. This “rescue” should be investigated.
We recently adopted a puppy from this rescue. They were very vague when answering direct questions about whether their dogs were fostered. Now that we have her home it’s obvious she wasn’t in a home. I understand it’s hard to find fosters so it’s not that she was in a kennel that I take issue with it’s that I asked and they dodged the question
The biggest issue is that they didn’t disclose that our dog has a deformed foot! You can’t tell just from watching her walk. She has half a pad and only one toe in one of her feet. I didn’t notice it until I was playing with her the evening we brought her home. I wouldn’t of cared but that’s not the kind of thing you just let someone be surprised by after you charge them $800 for a dog. I have no idea if it’s going to require medical care down the line but I would have wanted to know that was a possibility. Of course once I brought the dog home, I was in love with her so I would never return her, but I think that was a really shady thing to do
I would never adopt from them again and hope this warning serves others
We had lost our fur baby of 14 years and it was heartbreaking! We heard of homeward bound and we looked it up on the internet and they had the cutest pictures of such sweet dogs! We found our baby her name is AJ she's a beautiful wonderful loving pet who likes to just sit in your lap and be loved. She couldn't be a nicer dog! The organization did an excellent job of getting everything that she needed done before we adopted her I appreciate them so much. If you're planning on adopting definitely consider homeward bound they are awesome!!
We adopted both of our dogs through HB and never had anything but a positive experience! Through the whole process, the staff answered all our questions with professionalism and knowledge as to what’s worked in the past for other dogs, though not all are the same. The reviews about withholding information weren’t something we worried about, as some information isn’t transmissible from home to home. We went in with an attitude that it would be a learning experience for all of us and while we had our struggles, Kylie was awesome and encouraging. Now, we have two wonderful fur babies that fit right into our family! HB provides the basics for success with bringing home a new family member, and the rest is on the owners to do the rest!
We had a wonderful experience with Homeward Bound! I really liked how thorough the application process was to ensure the dogs go to good homes. They were friendly and the process was quick and simple once we met her and knew she was the one for us! She is the sweetest puppy and we are SO glad we found her. Thank you Homeward Bound!
Oh my, it has been such a wonderful experience!!! From the beginning, I had very in-depth conversations to see if I was a good fit for the dog I wanted to adopt. They were very informative and open with all aspects of the dog. They took our experience and background seriously, as their number one goal is to place a dog with the best possible home. These volunteers work tirelessly to make the best matches between dogs and adopters. I am So fortunate to have come across this organization, and such a wonderful dog!!!!
I adopted a dog from Homeward Bound a couple years ago. It was a great experience. They helped me find the right dog for my life style. They were very helpful and easy to work with. Couldn’t be happier!!
I love this rescue and their compassion for helping all dogs in need. We have adopted multiple dogs from them. I highly recommend Homeward Bound AWG to anyone looking for their next furry friend!
We adopted our sweet Olive during COVID last year and we had a great experience with Homeward Bound. The application process was smooth and our adoption day was perfect. We appreciate all the patience with the questions we asked and are so happy with our experience. We always recommend Homeward Bound to people looking to adopt and know if we ever adopt again in the future we will definitely be back!
My son & I got our first dog, a senior, from a couple-worker who couldn’t keep him. After 5 years our fur baby got a fatal illness & we had to put him down. My son was away at college so my boss sent me to Homeward Bound.
7 years later I’ve never looked back. I have fostered many & even had a foster fail!
This the hardest working group!
They have such a love for dogs of all shapes, sizes, & ages.
The time & dedication they give to all these furry friends is remarkable. I’m thrilled to be part of something so important & rewarding.
Thanks so much to each one of them!
I have never had the opportunity to own a dog... until this February. That's when I started fostering this beautiful 1 year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. And every moment has been the best! This little girl had a grade V/VI heart murmur and was in need of a surgery to repair a PDA. Homeward Bound has made sure that she got the best care possible and while she is still a bit in recovery, she is doing much, much better!! I can't say enough good things about Homeward Bound! The care and concern, the effort made to bring so many dogs to their fur-ever homes and all the hard work done each day makes me so grateful!! I never knew how much I would enjoy all the tail and butt waggles and kisses I get each day!! Priceless!! Thank you Homeward Bound!!
I have not only volunteered with Homeward Bound, but I have also adopted. This small group of volunteers work tirelessly to place over 700 dogs yearly; the dedication and commitment of this team is nothing short of inspiring. The application processors contact typically within 4-8 hours of receiving an application. The team reviews applications and conducts interviews to ensure the dog is an appropriate fit for the family, and if it is not, a more appropriate dog is suggested. The goal is always to make sure that the adoption is a win-win. They make sure that any current pets are altered, current on vaccinations, and heartworm preventative. The team provides guidance after adoption, including vet and trainer recommendations. The volunteers have a deep love and passion for all the dogs in our care. Rescue work is not easy; it is dirty, heartbreaking, soul-crushing, exhausting, frustrating, but it is also hopeful, promising, joyful, and no one does it better than the team from Homeward Bound. "Saving one dog will not change the world. But surely for that one dog, the world will change forever".
I have adopted, fostered and volunteered for this group. They truly care for these dogs and spend lots of time to train and get them adopted.
We had such a wonderful experience with adopting our sweet little girl. The application process went very smooth and we able to be approved with in days to get our baby. When we got to the site to meet her everyone was very helpful and professional. Of course we fell in love with her. They sent us home with a care package and information for our vet. We were very happy with how everything went. We will definitely adopt from them in the future!

Meet Rizzo. Adopted from Homeward Bound in 2017 when he was about 4-6 months old. He was a foster fail for us. We couldn’t have asked for a better dog. He took to training very well and is, hands down, the best dog we have. (Do not tell our other 2 i said that!). Every day I am thankful that Homeward Bound was able to find him and put him in our lives. Thank you!
I first became aware of Homeward bound a little over a year ago when my friend started fostering for them. They are amazing foster parents and Homeward Bound is amazing!! The dogs are so loved and well taken care of ❤
I volunteer for Homeward Bound and
I love it here. Dogs here are loved and cared for and we have an enrichment program that are training dogs obedience and commands. We are working hard to give every dog a chance to go to a fun and loving home . Adopting a rescue dogs will be you greatest reward.
We adopted our sweet Elsa from Homeward Bound seven years ago. She came home first as a foster but we all knew within a day she’d be staying. Both fostering and adopting were smooth.
Since then we’ve been able to at different times foster, transport and work with dogs in obedience class. Lots of dedicated people donating a lot of time to help these babies find forever homes!
This was my first time adopting and had the best experience! They made the process so easy for me and helped me with any questions concerns I had during and even after adopting. Not to mention I got my best little buddy out of it :) Will definitely come back if I decide to adopt again!
I have been volunteering for Homeward Bound for about a year now and the experience has been wonderful! I love the fact that they will put dogs through obedience classes to increase their chances of being adopted. They also have volunteers come walk the dogs so they can get some exercise and they have a kennel enrichment program that really helps the dogs. This place really cares about the dogs they take in.
My daughter & I started fostering in 2019 and absolutely love this organization and what they stand for. The dedicated volunteers put in very long hours. They have been supportive with providing anything needed for helping the dogs. We are on our 45th foster dog and have enjoyed them all! We will continue to foster with this organization. We also adopted 2 pups ourselves!
It's been one year since my adoption experience. The staff was helpful, knowledgeable, and thorough.
HUGE thanks to the foster mom for caring for my dog, saNDy(Betty White) and through her deliveriy of 8 puppies before I adopted her. saNDy has been an amazing addition to our family, and she has adjusted quite easily to her new spoiled lifestyle. Thank you again for our new family member. saNDy is a great dog. I am so glad I decided to finally adopt. We are all rewarded daily having her in our home.
I started volunteering at Homeward Bound last year during COVID. The main attraction for me was the obedience classes and training at the kennel that they do with their dogs. They take in and do their best to work with all types of dogs - getting them socialized and ready for forever homes.
We had a great experience with our adoption. They were able to answer all of my questions and the foster parents really care about these dogs. I still send photos and updates. I would definitely recommend them when looking to adopt!
We adopted our little Bentley from Homeward Bound and we can't imagine our lives without him! We are so grateful to Homeward Bound for helping our little bubble of sunshine find us ❤ This group is very professional and the adoption process was very quick and easy.
Meet Ivie, aka Momma’s baby girl. The people at Homeward Bound were absolutely fantastic, from her Foster mom (Heather) to all the rest of the staff on location. You can tell how dedicated all of their volunteers are to making sure all their animals get a loving and safe forever home. Ivie has been a perfect fit to our home and my life wouldn’t be complete without her❤️ Thank you homeward bound!!
Adopted our Lab a year ago and the group was wonderful to deal with. Still have contact with the foster parent and enjoy sending photos and videos as our pup has grown. Would recommend them to anyone looking to adopt.
We adopted our puppy last April and it has been great. Our entire experience with Homeward bound was positive. The application was easy, the foster families and volunteers were so helpful. They knew what we were looking for and kept us updated along the way. They were efficient with the final paperwork and pick up and this was all during the height of the pandemic. We will absolutely use them again and I referred them to many of my friends. We love our Luna and would absolutely recommend adopting any aged dog!
We adopted our sweet Ollie from Homeward Bound. It was a fantastic experience for us. His foster mom was exceptional and was very gracious in answering all of our questions about Ollie both before and after the adoption. The application process was easy and the response time to the application was very timely. We were so thrilled to be able to meet Ollie and take him home that same night. He has been the perfect addition to our family and we look forward to many more years with him
Homeward Bound is amazing!!! They work so hard to make sure every dog that comes into their care gets the medical treatment it needs!! They connected me with my best friend!!!
We have adopted 4 dogs and foster many more from Homeward Bound. They are a great organization to work with and I admire all they have done for so many dogs. The photo below is Brillo who came to us when she was around 6 months old. She is now 11 and we love her so much. Thank you Homeward Bound for rescuing these wonderful dogs and for all that you do for them.
I adopted my 2 wonderful dogs from Homeward Bound in 2015. The experience was great. I was able to meet, interact and play with the boys before I took them home. The volunteers were also super helpful even after I got them home. I will always be grateful to Homeward Bound for rescuing and allowing me to adopt my sweet boys!
We adopted our Gizmo from Homeward Bound. He has been the best addition to our family! They were very thorough in the adoption process, making sure we could be responsible pet owners and that he was going to a good home. Would recommend checking out their dogs if you are interested in adopting a new friend.
My husband & I fostered around 13 dogs with Homeward Bound Animal Welfare Group. Some were harder to acclimate to their new environment more than others but we were always supported by the staff with whatever we needed. They provided all the food & supplies needed. Once they even sent a trainer to our home to reach us how to work with an especially timid dog. It is clear that they care about who their dogs are adopted out to as evidence of their application process. It is hard not knowing the dog’s background but unfortunately that is very common in rescue organization. They do their best to provide as much info as they know. We are no longer involved only because we have relocated to Florida. Here are some of the dogs we fostered.
My husband and I have now rescued two dogs through Homeward Bound and have had nothing but great experiences. Our first dog, Chespin, was a senior dachshund and adopted in 2017. He became a treasured member of our family and was a joy to have. He is the reason we will always consider adopting a senior. He sadly passed away September 2020. When we notified Homeward Bound of his passing they mourned with us. Shortly after his passing, they introduced us to two dachshunds who were just pulled from their breeding situation in Ohio. We ended up rescuing "Flying Buckeye" now Buckeye. Again, Homeward Bound was super supportive during the adoption process. They have great recommendations for training courses and overall obedience classes. We will always adopt before shopping and Homeward Bound is our number one choice! Thanks for rescuing all of these sweet souls.
I cannot thank this group enough for our wonderful sweet pet. We had lost our precious poodle of nearly 17 years..we'were so broken hearted,...thought never again! My daughter was familiar with this organization and keep sending us pics and info on so many sweet dogs..I told her not sure, but, if ever had another would know when I saw it..Oh my gosh! In one Pic, there he was!!! MY BEAUTIFUL BUDDY. Our perfect little Shih.tzu. we Loved him at 1st sight..without this awesome organization and sweet staff we would have been grieving still...It takes special people with big hearts to do this job. We cannot thank you enough..God Bless! Keep up the great work! Shirley
Homeward Bound has given so many animals a second chance at finding a forever family. Our Golden came from them and I appreciate that they made sure all their animals are fully vetted and fixed prior to adopting them out. Some of these pets come with medical issues that other organizations would otherwise pass on the animal, but not Homeward Bound. They have saved so many lives no matter the costs, giving these animals a healthier life and a second chance. This organization deserves to be recognized for the work they do and the countless lives they've saved. I cannot imagine our family without our beautiful Golden and I have Homeward Bound to thank for her! She is such a source of joy and laughter to our family. Tha knyou Homeward Bound for all that you do!
Homeward Bound is doing amazing work and we are so happy we were able to adopt from them! Their volunteers are super helpful and care so much about placing the pups into their forever homes. ❤️
I can’t say enough good things about Homeward Bound !!! I have adopted 3 dogs from this rescue over the years . They are awesome to work with . Their process is thorough and efficient. They are very honest about the characteristics of the dogs they have and if the dog will be a good fit in your home . The meet and greet process is easy. Each volunteer I have encountered Is nice and you can tell they have a heart full of love for the dogs. I have referred many friends and family to them and their experiences have been the same as mine ! Keep up the great work Homeward Bound of saving dogs lives !
I recently adopted my first dog from Homeward Bound, and it was literally the best thing my family ever did. This pomsky was retired from a breeder. Obviously when you adopt a rescue there are unknowns. Chances are there will be some things that you have to work through, especially when the dog has never lived in a home, but this sweet girl has adapted well. We are taking the suggestion that was in the dogs bio of enrolling her in an obedience class, which will help boost her confidence. I’m so thankful that this rescue saved her. She also had all her shots, was spayed by the rescue & came home with a month supply of heart worm & flee & tick preventative. They are setting dogs up to live their best lives possible.
I adopted my beloved Harley from Homeward Bound in 2018. They were wonderful to work with. I was so impressed with them that I have volunteered to help at some of their events and I donate money to Homeward Bound on a regular basis. Homeward Bound and its volunteers are extremely dedicated to rescuing homeless dogs and go to great lengths to save every single dog they can. I am in awe of what they do and am extremely appreciative of their tireless dedication to our furry friends!
I have had the pleasure of volunteering, foster and adopting through homeward bound. The volunteers spend countless hours working with dogs, bathing, and getting to know the dogs personality so they can find each fur kid a home that they will thrive in. They are amazing, kind and work tirelessly while maintaining there own personal work and family life.
Every dog is vetted before going to their new homes. That alone sometimes can cost 1000’s of dollars, but HB does what it has to do to give each dog the best possible chance on their new lives. So many people have no idea what it possibly takes to help with homeless dogs, but I can honestly say that Homeward Bound does and they do an AMAZING job. ❤️
Our relationship with this amazing organization dates back to its inception 13 years ago. The founder has been an incredible source of inspiration for not just our family's passion for foster rescue but for countless others who are like minded and like hearted. Indeed, it takes a very rare and selfless soul to give so unconditionally of their precious time and personal resources to not just envision what a rescue and foster organization should be but to bring it to fruition. Homeward Bound and their national reach has saved an unimaginable number of lives by providing medical care and wellness for animals that would have otherwise suffered and met a fate that no one, let alone a helpless animal, should ever have to endure. That is the harsh reality that exists and this is precisely where this organization excels. By providing timely assessment for the immediate mobilization and care of each and everyone of their intakes, they are able to intervene at a time when care is most needed to re-write what would have been a truly bleak outcome. Further, the placement of their animals whether through foster or to their forever homes is likewise methodical, compassionate, and ultimately results in the brightest future for each and everyone of that are blessed to be in their care. Having been involved with other such organizations both through foster programs and through adoption, I proudly proclaim that Homeward Bound shines as the model that all such rescue organizations should endeavor to be. Please see the attached photo as living proof! Be well, be kind, and be the difference in this life that you were meant to be!
Our family adopted 2 dogs, simultaneously, from Homeward Bound. One was in a foster and the other in the kennel. I had not heard of them previously, but many of my friends and family recommended them and knew of people who foster or volunteer with them. Their application process was VERY easy, and they followed up promptly with a phone interview and reference checks. We were never misled about the dogs we were interested in, in fact they clearly wanted to make sure our 2 boys got along prior to us meeting them, and expressed concern over whether our young children would be okay with an excitable dog who may jump. Yes we have needed to work on obedience, confidence, and social behavior. But, we were told ahead of time that these things would be needed, and why wouldn't they for dogs who have only known life inside of a kennel? We couldn't be happier with our 2 boys and with a little work they have been great additions to our family!
I started volunteering with Homeward Bound in 2015, working concessions to raise funds, working handling dogs at adoption/showcase events, then working with certain dogs at training courses this organization coordinated (what rescue actually does training courses to give the pups the best chance??!!!) , then fostering and eventually adopted our "foster fail." What I have witnessed is that, often adopters confuse the organization as a people rescue, rather than a dog rescue. Let me explain- their entire purpose is to make sure these dogs land in a stable environment, willing to work through and with the dog's issues from an extremely uncertain past. Our foster fail (who I have to this day and cannot imagine life without), can be spirited and stubborn, he had never lived in a home until we had him and had gone through who knows what kind of hell before the rescue got him. Homeward Bound does the very best they can to figure out a dog's temperament and tolerances, but since they don't come to the rescue with a written history, it is literally impossible to know how the dogs will react with every stimuli and person. The complaints I have seen seem to be people who have lost sight of the fact the rescue's purpose is to watch out for the dogs. They are tasked with matching these dogs with a home which will work with the dog and their issues in the long haul and show understanding. They are not breeding and selling AKC registered pups whose entire history and environment is known. And, quite frankly, if you can't work through the application process and show understanding of why it needs to be so stringent or you lack patience to wait for a response for a couple hours, maybe a rescue dog (or any other dog, for that matter) is not for you.
My baby foster fail was adopted out three times to people who checked out okay with Homeward Bound's application process and swore they knew the breed and could work with him. Every one of them was not truthful with themselves or the rescue and ended up returning him without attending the classes he was used to so they could learn, with complaints about the behaviors I specifically told them about and really putting in no effort. They were informed of his temperament (I know this, because I told them myself as the foster who knew his short-comings/struggles). The problem is, people only hear what they want to. He has been a big commitment and we still are working through different anxieties (3 years from when we started fostering him-for instance, I will miss every fireworks show until we work through the upset for him, because I know it scares him so much and will not leave him alone to deal with it), but Homeward Bound NEVER misled us about him and he has made HUGE improvements, but working through these issues little by little has taken time and patience and knowing it was about HIS needs, not mine.
My observation with potential adopters has been that, when I'm trying to explain the items that require work/things he struggles with doing, their eyes glass over and all they can do is ask what the dog will do for THEM. "Will he run beside me when I ride my bicycle?" "Will he instantly love my Uncle Buck?" "Can I take him kayaking?" I'm sitting here telling you that fireworks, leaves blowing across the lawn or neighbors walking to their car freaks him out still and you want to practically take him on roller coasters. ♀️
Homeward Bound (and all rescues, really) love these guys and they are doing the very best they can. I would just say, do some research on what it means to get a rescue and educate yourself as to the work involved. Thank you, Homeward Bound, for my sweet, funny, spunky, ornery and willfull little guy! He's been a lot of work, but he has brought me so much joy.
The Homeward Bound Animal Welfare Group are nothing short of guardian Angels! The groups dedicated volunteers earn their winds everyday. My family has been blessed by three of their rescued dogs over the years. Ava, Maggie Mae and Cooper!!! Because the staff have always been open, honest, helpful and friendly when going through the adoption process, they are my first choice when considering the addition of a new dog to our family. Whenever I hear someone is searching for a canine companion, Homeward Bound is ALWAYS my first recommendation, hands down. If you are honest with them and can be a safe landing for one of the dogs needing that happily ever after, this is one of the best rescue groups out there. Every dollar we have given for a dog goes back into the rescues, the medical care and daily needs of another little canine life needing saved and the chance to live loved. That means a lot to my family, knowing we have helped! Thank you for all the behind the scenes heartbreak, messes, dedication, late nights and strength it takes to rescue and find good homes for the over 7.000 dogs you have secured a safe landing for. Love my pups beyond words! I am so glad we found out about Homeward Bound!
On November 5th, 2009 Homeward Bound asked if I would foster an 8 month old puppy who just had heart surgery. I was hesitant at first because I scared to take care of a puppy let alone one that had a major surgery. Once I got him home he was the most easy going dog I have ever met. He just fit right in to my life & I adopted him in January 2010. Now, 12 years later that little puppy is the smartest decision I have ever made. I honestly can’t imagine my life without him. Especially this last year while going through cancer treatments. He has been right by my side protecting me, snuggling, & giving me kisses.
I can never thank Homeward Bound Animal Welfare Group enough for allowing me to be the forever home for this “little old man”. He has brought me so much joy & love into my life. They truly love the animals in their care & do everything they can for them.
Homeward Bound is AWESOME! I've had rescue dogs my entire life and Homeward Bound is the best organization I've adopted from. We adopted our dog, Bailey, from them in March 2020 and the entire experience was outstanding. They responded quickly once I submitted an application and did a comprehensive background check to ensure the dog was going to a good home, which I appreciate. They really want a good match between the dogs they adopt out and the families who are adopting them; this was particularly important in my situation because we have two young girls and I was looking for a dog who was gentle and easy going. Homeward Bound was very honest and transparent about our dog's past and made sure Bailey was fully vetted before we were able to adopt her. The entire organization is run by volunteers so they don't have time to do a lot of meet and greets before you submit an application, but I guarantee you that they do the work up front to ensure you'll be a good match with the dog you end up adopting. I would adopt from them again in a minute, if my husband would let us have another dog!
I first became aware of Homeward Bound Animal Welfare Group (HBAWG) back in mid-2012 when we found a dog we fell in love with online. I liked them on Facebook and ended up volunteering to work concessions for them at Notre Dame football games as a way to help raise money for vet care, food, kennel costs, etc. for dogs that would have otherwise been euthanized.
My husband and I then decided to foster a dog or two as a way to help socialize and give these dogs a chance to find AND keep their forever homes. Unfortunately, a lot of them have never been around humans and never been in a home, much less potty trained. They are "throwaways" and, because of organizations like HWBAWG, are given a 2nd chance.
It's a tough, ALL volunteer business and, while satisfying to see pups find their forever homes, can sometimes be grueling as decisions are made about selecting the right dogs they think can be adopted. There isn't a document that travels with each dog memorializing their history, their tricks, if they're house trained, etc. A lot of these dogs are "broken" and just require some patience, understanding, and love to bring out who they really are.
This type of adoption and process may not be for everyone - I get it. What I don't get is the slamming of an organization that is trying to do the right thing for dogs and trying to be fully transparent as to what they know and don't know about each dog. Are they perfect? No. But these people volunteer their time working many hours each week to save lives. How many of you can say that?
My experience with Homeward Bound was overwhelmingly positive. My family has now adopted two dogs from this organization. Obviously, these dogs are homeless, untrained dogs, they're going to need to learn how to be a part of a home, but it's well worth it.
I adopted my best friend from Homeward Bound in 2013. She has been the best thing that has ever happened to me. I am so thankful for this rescue and the work that they do. I will definitely adopt from them again in the future.
Homeward Bound is absolutely AWESOME!!! I am honestly and completely appalled by reviewers on this page calling this 100% volunteer nonprofit organization a “scam.” Do you even know the definition of a scam??? Such means, you send your money to some falsely-advertised internet/phone company who promises you some prestigious product, and they gladly take the cash and you never hear from them again. First of all, a dog’s life is not a “product” for purchase and use how you see fit.
And…Homeward Bound does nothing of the sort, and is NEVER misleading to potential adopters. The application process is extensive and thorough. All behavioral or medical issues that come with a rescued dog (from horrible kill shelters, by the way) is provided in objective detail, given what they can possibly know…and folks, this rescue team cannot predict how the dog will adjust with you and your home. Which is always why, they give full refunds (which only covers the vetting already done for you) if the dog needs to be returned for any reason.
During the interview process, highly experienced volunteers will always be honest with potential challenges in a placement fit, and will not schedule an adoption if that is not properly addressed.
**For those complaining you sent 9+ questions to an email inquiry address and were rerouted to the organization’s actual website, get off PetFinder and stop blaming the volunteer staff who work FT in the community already, for telling you exactly where you can apply and get your questions addressed. This is not a window shopping pet store for unethically and neglectfully mass-bred animals that you may want to call property. Applications are FREE, and when you’re serious about adoption, the HB team is always ready to address your thoughts.
The main problem in animal rescue work is when adopters choose a dog based on looks (aka “cuteness appeal”) and not on breed, age, size, or known temperament. When there is an unsuccessful adoption, far too many people want to blame those who are trying to save 1,000 dogs a year from scheduled/certain death. In addition, far too many adopters return dogs almost immediately (10 or less days) and sometimes label the dog as “used” or “broken,” with little-to-no empathy or care for what that dog may have already survived.
In essence, if you are adopting a rescue dog so you can create an ego-endorsing social media post, you probably shouldn’t own any animals at all.
I’m not a board member of this rescue. I’m a champion of theirs because I know how much they do, far and above, what most of us could ever imagine…to save on dog’s life.
I stand with Homeward Bound and Sanmar, without question.
I have rescued two dogs from this group in last 5 years and have never had bad experience with communication, process, truthfulness, professionalism. I have never witnessed any cruelty or lack of care. In fact at both adoptions, three years apart, all volunteers and leadership were very intune and loving to the dogs. One must realize that any group rescuing from mills and kill shelters are going to be bringing in some level of traumatized animals that must adapt, and how they are with volunteers caring for them in a kennel setting or foster home, may not be what you experience right off the bat as the animal is once again being shuffled to your forever home. Think....bad living to rescue care to scarey vet to rescue care to public adoption events to rescue care and into a forever home with people, kids, noise, etc etc...
Yep takes awhile to adjust. Don't blame dog, don't blame rescue group.
It's been almost 6 months since we adopted our dog from this shelter, and I thought I would give my story. We adopted our 2 year old dog back in January when we were ready to expand our family (had a cat), and the advert said she was "just a little shy." We get there, and they bring her out and she's more than just a little shy, she is TERRIFIED. Clinging to corners, shaking with fear. I couldn't stand to see her like that; they said she had a breeder background but didn't think she was abused, just unsocialized. We adopted our dog and brought her home. She wasn't potty trained, no big deal; that was advertised. But the first few nights, after we set up a kennel, she stayed in the kennel like she thought she couldn't come out, even with the door open, and went to the bathroom in the kennel. There was no aggression, no real personality for this dog. She would cower at your hands, and submissively lick you. She also was very cage aggressive when we first got her, barking at our cat when he came too close. I believe she may have been in a puppy mill setting (or at least had been kennelled her whole life) because of this, along with the intense anxiety. Her spirit was broken, but her eyes screamed she wanted a chance.
It has taken nearly 6 months, but she's doing magnificent through our hard work and exposure to the world. She bonded with me before bonding with my fiance, leading me to believe a male probably owned her before us because of how terrified she was of my fiance. But, I think honestly the flyer was misleading slightly. This dog was not just a litte shy, which is meant to attract beginner pet owners. She was definitely NOT for beginners; I grew up helping my father breed and train hunting dogs, knew several tricks of the trade, but dealing with a dog with this LEVEL of anxiety was NOT EASY and something wholly new to me.There were very frustrating moments. And she was FAR from being a little shy; she has intense anxiety of everything -- cars, humans, other dogs, attachment anxiety. We are just now able to take her for long walks to exercise because she would fight (pull back, twist in the leash, etc) and try to run. I feel the advert was misleading; they should have been upfront. While I understand trying to push dogs to be adopted, this dog, if adopted by people who didn't have the patience to work with her (and believe me, this was a FULL TIME JOB rehabilitating her) and enjoy working with her, she could have been returned and suffered more trauma and abandonment issues. She is now full of love, and very jealous of her cat brother.
All in all, I'd say if you adopt from here, please be cautious and mindful. Ask questions, about their behaviors and personalities. Be prepared if you go in. I don't want to bad mouth the volunteers because I understand when dedicating your time in addition to working or going to school, you do the best you can. I read the reports on this rescue as well, and the comments on here too little too late. It was my fault and I should have researched this rescue better, but in saying that, if I had, we would never have our super silly little girl.
I'm rating 3 stars because we had a happy ending with our dog, thankfully, but between other's experiences, the news articles, inspection reports, and our own experience, I would be extremely cautious adopting here, and ONLY if you are very experienced and caring and TRAINING (cannot stress this enough) dogs. Otherwise, I do not recommend for first-timers, beginners, and especially family pets for children.
Do not go here. They adopted out a dog to us that turned out to have sever fear aggression. After working with the vet and a behaviorist we started to see results before he tried to attack our friend with out any warning signs. We are not the first family to bring him back for this issue. We were told it was fear towards a specific type of person due to his previous abuser. We spoke to the rescue about returning him and receiving a refund. After returning him we are now refused our refund. The next day he is back up for adoption and being touted as passing his behavior courses. This dog is aggressive and dangerous and they still insist on adopting him out.
I read the reviews given for this group and I have to say this was not my experience. You have to realize this is a group run by volunteers that work 40 hours a week, they have families and still find time and energy to devote to saving these animals. So if it takes a couple of days to return my email...i don't have a problem with that. They deserve our thanks, it is all about saving the dogs isn't it?
I adopted my female Schnauzer from them almost 2 years ago......she was a retired breeder. And yes she did take a while to adjust to life with me....but I had talked with Shelby on the phone prior to adopting her and she had told me what I was in for, what time frame she would need for adjusting, and she was spot on. She was also correct in that she has made a wonderful addition to my family and i can't imagine life without her. I am thinking of adopting a sister for her without hesitation. She has nothing but unconditional love to give.
You do have to be patient.
I don't know how there could be any mystery on dental work or anything else, as one person had commented. They are very thorough on giving you complete dental and vet records. I appreciated the fact....since i was driving quite a distance to pick my dog up, that she was reserved for me, and i could pick her up by appointment.
On their website, it states to email them and you will get an application. I read some other reviews and had a similar experience. I emailed with several questions, including how to go about the adoption process and receive the application. I got a response that said "Look on our website"....I had already stated that is exactly what I did initially. Over the course of 4 days, and several emails. absolutely no response from them. I finally emailed and said I was disappointed that they couldn't get back to me during a time they claim to desperately need homes for their dogs. It was after that email, I received an immediate response telling me I was rude and did not care that they are all volunteers and have a life outside of the rescue. She, the "director", also told me to never contact them again. In my email, I did not say anything inappropriate or untrue. Absolutely unbelievable way to run a shelter for homeless animals. When you have a perspective family reaching out to adopt, and you are nothing short of unprofessional and rude, why would you ever want to deal with that again? We went elsewhere the very next day and adopted a 5-month old puppy and are in love! It all worked out in the end with the rescue we ended up with. Homeward Bound was VERY unprofessional and unrealistic.
I inquired about a dog via email and asked 9 specific questions about the dog, they emailed back "great dog" essentially ignoring my questions. When I brought up the fact they failed to answer they sent me nasty emails and claimed they answered all my questions. My advice is to avoid this unprofessional outfit. PS: when I asked about meeting the dog they said "no time for meet and greet" and advised me to come to their adoption event with $400.00 cash and pickup the dog,
I totaly agree with the previous reviewers opinion about this place, tha is a total scam! We were told that the dog we adopt was a little timid that she will warm up very fast! But the reality is that she was abused in a puppy mill for her entire life. She was totaly afraid of every thing . she did not even know what was to be outside free ! Homeward said that she came from a "good "breeder" but her reality showed a very different thing.
They never tried to re-trained her neither, evaluated her deepely, or put her in a foster home first. They never did an effort to rehabilitated her. Homeward refused to provide information about the dog that will help us to make her aclimatization faster to the new environment. But for sure they knew all about the dog and the place becuse Homeward said they know very well this place and they support this "good breeder". When we arrived at home, we started to realized how bad was her situation. This was confirmed after our Vet and dog trainer examined her. Some of Her theeth are spent almost to the gum line becuse chewing the wires of the canel were she spend her entire life. She has ALL the symptom of abuse. The description of all of them will be too long for the purpose of this review.
I am very sorry for the dogs that fall into their hands, but if you care about animals and want the abuse stop, I will strongly descurrage to adopt dogs from Homeward Bound Animal Welfare Group Inc.
UPDATE: an innocent inquiry by a neighbor, who knows the owner and her family, and a report about a similar set-up in The Chicago Tribune, make clear what is likely going on here. This appears to be a clear for-profit, illegal puppy mill ring. The sister reportedly takes and "fosters" the puppies born in this mill in her home. Buyers wiuld pay top dollar thinking they are dealing with a legit breeder. When the breeding dogs get older this side of the ring "rescues” the mistreated dogs through the “non-profit". They deceive the volunteers who unwittingly support the organization, lie to those seeking to adopt about the condition of the dogs. I have filed with the Attorney General's office and the BBB.
I have to say, rarely have I been so shocked at the blatant disregard for truth and compassion that Jen and her associates demonstrate.
I adopted a dog, who they described as a retired breeder. They described a family environment in which she was regularly around people and children, that she was housebroken, etc.
All of this was bald-faced lie. She was a mill dog used to living in her own urine and excrement. She had little to no experience with people, much less children.
OK, so in reality she was a mill dog used to horrible experiences. They did ZERO rehabilitation prior to adopting her out. They do not care a stitch about the animals they adopt out. All they want is the cash.
This dog is sweet, though almost entirely shut down. She may never be able to live in a house, as it may never be possible to housebreak her.
They lie, outright, to the detriment of not only future owners but of the dogs they purport to "rescue". This leads to inappropriate adoptions, and without relevant information which they refuse to provide, it is impossible to know exactly what the dog needs to acclimate properly.
Deceitful, dishonest, uncaring.
Plus, as others note, their claim to nonprofit status seems entirely illegitimate.
So sad the irresponsibility.
You sign a contract pledging if you don't keep the dog you must return to them. Not. In. Your. Life. If I can't keep her she will go to a responsible organization. I have a litany of their lies in writing.
AVOID THESE PEOPLE AT ALL COSTS!
The poor dogs.
