This is my 5th year as an in2books teacher, and I cannot say enough about how this program motivates at-risk students to read and write! It allows students to select their own books, and then write letters to a pen pal who has also read the same books. Students who are very resistant to writing willingly type a letter to their pen pal and the revision process is almost painless! I am a veteran special education teacher and my students are SO excited to exchange letters with their wonderful pen pals!

I’ve adopted 2 cats in 3 years from this Fancy Cats — one from Kuwait and one from a southern shelter. This rescue really cares for their animals, and they go to great lengths to ensure that the cats go to homes where they will be well taken care of and loved. They vet potential adopters very thoroughly, fiercely advocate for their charges, and follow up after adoption to ensure that all is well. They also provide as much detailed information about the animals as possible. Cats in their care prior to finding homes get a vet checkup and vaccines before adoption. I highly recommend Fancy Cats and after 2 great experiences with them, I would never even think about adopting from a shelter or another rescue. Imo neither should you. Here are Karma and Krishna!

I am thrilled to know about and continue to donate to Assistance League of Northern Virginia. I appreciate that they also come up with a variety of ways to raise funds throughout the year. I get to receive a gift beyond giving. Their Holiday Wreath and annual White House ornaments are a family favorite. The ease in which one can select specific items, such as winter clothing for those in need, makes it even more satisfying. It's a delight to have a variety of choices throughout the year to raise funds or provide necessary items to these precious children in our community. Assistance League of Northern Virginia gives these children a sense of belonging and care from their neighbors.

I have seen the birth of IndoUS organization as I'm the wife of the founder. They are a hard working and successful organization. I am looking forward to attending the Gala on Nov 2nd evening. Thank you to the organization for allowing me to be a part of its journey.

Touching Heart is an incredible organization empowering and enabling children to make an impact. The model is unique and allows children to learn and understand the impact and benefits of giving, not just to others but to themselves.

After my Dad had an Aortic Dissection, he joined Aortic Hope to help him heal. The support and answers he received greatly contributed to his recovery. He is still involved with the organization today, as Aortic Hope continued to support his ongoing recovery. I am thankful he found Approx Hope.

I am a volunteer and former SCORE Association and SCORE foundation Board member. I can vouch for what a great organization SCORE is. It helps entrepreneurs start and grow thousands of small businesses a year thus helping build our economy and creating badly needed jobs. I can personally attest to the fact that donations are wisely used to bring these valuable services to our communities.

I teach Chinese in this center for about half year, the kids love to learn and they enjoy this kind of culture exchange program. Now the kids can speak numbers, family members, body parts and some food names in Chinese, they also can sing some Chinese songs. For me I enjoyed teaching and learning with the kids!

The religious school teachers are in the dark ages when it comes to awareness of bullying. They actually told my child, "well, you should have more self-respect" and "kids will be kids" when he was bullied. When we took this up with the director of the religious school, the education director, and even the rabbi, they simply could not understand that my child had been harmed. They focused their "zero-tolerance policy" on the one time my child defended himself and his sister after years of verbal taunts and physical attacks (tripping, shoving, pushing... always when the teacher's back was turned). When out of concern for other children being bullied, or being harmed by seeing kids bullied without consequences, we shared our concerns publically, the synagogue took steps to kick us out. <br><br>Also, the rabbi is uninspiring. She isn't much of a leader and certainly isn't a person I would trust in times of personal crisis or grief. She does read stories to the preschoolers adequately, but my kids say she yells at them in religious school. When she knew that my son was hospitalized with suicidal ideation resulting from the bullying, she never once asked me how he was doing.<br><br>My kids loved going to preschool there and my husband continued to volunteer for the preschool long after our kids were in grade school, but lately my youngest refuses to go to religious school and although my daughter loves her teacher this year, she has no interest in being a Bat Mitzvah after a couple classes with the rabbi.<br><br>They are very concerned with collection of annual membership dues. This year High Holiday tickets were only sent if dues were paid before a certain date. We have had financial difficulties this year and finding the High Holiday envelope empty with just a reminder to pay up brought me to tears on what should have been a joyous day. I guess being an active member for almost a decade isn't as valued as checks. We loved this community when we joined in 2009. Now I'm sort of relieved as well as shocked and angry that they kicked us out.

Frying Pan Farm Park is a prime location in the Fairfax County Park Authority system in Northern Virginia. Admission is free. My son and I have been many times throughout the years, enjoying the farm animals, the historic farm life, and the simplicity of fresh air. Children in need may not have direct access to the park and would depend on school trips to go. This year, the #GivingTuesday campaign at FPFP focused on children in need gaining access to the park through field trips, camps, and other park programs. Because I have spent a lot of time volunteering in schools and going on field trips, I have witnessed the common situation whereby a hand full of children are left behind due them being unable to pay to go. Not only do these children miss out on the fun with their classmates, they miss out on reinforcing the details presented by the park programming, things which are part of annual state testing for each grade. The teachers are then behind in the education of these kids. Having funds for these children to go puts them on par with the other students and helps them with precious financial equality when it comes to participation and having access to a premier farm park. That is why I made my Facebook page: to help children in need enjoy a park we treasure.

My suffering by giving for the benefit of others is believed to be a part of my spiritual DNA and was realized early on in my life. The result; I usually have only what I need because of my desire to help others to become what they want to be and want to achieve in their lives.<br /><br />Were I not as outward focused my material gains might possibly be more but not nearly as satisfying, although my hardships have been more than the pleasures I hope will come in more abundance during my lifetime but if not, hopefully in my afterlife. The CIA Officers Memorial Foundation is a charity that provides college scholarships and other support to the children of CIA officers killed in the line of duty. The parents of these kids are people who voluntarily exposed themselves to tremendous personal risk in the service of our country for relatively modest financial compensation. As U.S. citizens we have an obligation to look after the families of our clandestine agents working overseas in dangerous places so that we can live in relative peace in our home country.

I work for a number of different volunteer organizations and have to say that the Naomi Project of Northern Virginia is one of my favorites! I started as a Volunteer Mentor there 3 years ago and really appreciated that they not only provided me with relevant training on mentoring a new mother - including where to find county services - but also matched me with a mother and let me take it from there. You schedule your own time for meeting with your clients. They also provide baby books for the new babies, baby equipment (if needed) and are always available if you have any questions. I've mentored three mothers and am happy that I've been able to help them in a number of different ways. I now mentor one new mom, administer their Facebook page and have just joined their Steering Committee and Advisory Board. Great place to volunteer!

An all volunteer organization created to help fund the eductaion of Army Warrant Officers family members. Funded by direct contributions and Combined Federal Campaign Pledges. Annualy provides both cash grants (not loans) and an on-line four year scholarship with Grantham University.

Express Care has been helping me and my family for over 7 years now. When we came to USA we were at one point homeless and helpless because my father was shot during a store robbery where he worked. He was the only one financially supporting the family and with him in the hospital we did not have money to support ourselves. During this desperate time Express Care came in to help us with Financial needs, shelter, food, rental assistance, school supplies, transportation, and also provided translation help to the family as no one in the family spoke English then. After that they continued to help us in every aspect of life. Then on July 2009 my little sister was diagnosed with Cancer. Prior to her diagnosis for 7 months my sister suffered pain because the doctors failed to diagnose her cancer. During these 7 months my father did not do any job as he was going back and forth to the hospital for my sister&rsquo;s mysterious abdominal pain. During this time Express Care helped us with monthly groceries and monthly financial assistance. When my sister was finally diagnosed with Cancer Express Care stepped us even more to provide their full support in every way they could. Express Care continues to help us up to this very day and is always there during my sister&rsquo;s treatment for Cancer. After they helped us the very first time 7 years ago my entire family started to volunteer for them and we are still after 7 years volunteering for this organization because they are helping hundreds of families like my own and to help them help the community is our pleasure and honor because at one point we were in that same position as those families we are helping today.
