Review for Harvest Home Animal Sanctuary, Stockton, CA, USA
Harvest Home works with many of the more neglected types of animals---ones discarded and abused by humans, but not routinely sheltered by many animal charities. Chickens, rabbits, birds, pigs, ducks---these are not cats and dogs, as many think of in the "pet" catagory, but they are wonderful characters in their own right, and make excellent companions
Review for Habitat For Horses Inc, Alvin, TX, USA
HfH is one of the most dedicated, well managed, morally upright groups saving animals that I have ever known. Their tireless work to educate the public on a daily basis about the plight of both wild and domestic equines is unique. Some of the horses profiled have been subjected to unbelievable horror at the hands of humans, yet Habitat works their miracles in bringing these horses back to health. I am supremely confident that the monthly donation I send to support their wonderful, much needed rehabilitation of abused, starved and neglected equines is funding well spent.
Review for Center for Biological Diversity Inc, Tucson, AZ, USA
CBD is a lean, mean, working machine for the benefit of beleaguered plants, animals, and habitats in the US. They use the power of the courts and the laws to hold government agencies accountable for their actions. So much taxpayer money is diverted to programs that then become beholden to the lobbying actions of private business, and the corruption is glossed over or hidden. CBD exposes this fraud and waste and recalcitrance.
Center for Biological Diversity is also thankfully not of the Big Green bent, making secret deals with crooked politicians in exchange for lenience in other areas. They are one of the very few emphasizing the fundamental nature of the growth in human population that threatens all life on Earth. Without the slowing of the trajectory of human numbers, there is little hope for improving the outlook for other organisms.

Review for Center for Biological Diversity Inc, Tucson, AZ, USA
I have worked and given to many environmental groups over the years, but CBD is one of the most successful in targeted use of funds, effectiveness in bringing suits to the courts and winning, and amassing factual scientific basis for exposing the egregious behavior of government and private industry trying to trash our shared Earthly commons. They do not spend funds on frivolous gifts and goodies like stuffed animals, calenders, notecards, and the like, but use their clout to go to bat for our Earth and its beleaguered wild places and animals. They are fearless in tackling the big, faceless corporate powers, and making useful alliances with like-minded groups---and crediting them when they do.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
seeing the many important wild lands and animals protected by the efforts in courts. Development by rapacious corporate profit models would have destroyed these things without CBD intervention

Review for People Helping Horses, Arlington, WA, USA
People Helping Horses does an amazing amount of lifesaving and rehabilitation with the tightest of budgets! They often train their foster animals to help them adjust to a new life of service and benefit to the adopting family.

I have followed the progress of the organization and the animals they rescue and rehabilitate for several years. They work exceptionally hard and reach out to rescue the horses in very dire circumstances.

I can not find a part of the program to criticize
Review for People Helping Horses, Arlington, WA, USA
People Helping Horses does excellent work in the horse sanctuary field. They work tirelessly to evaluate how they can stretch each dollar for rescuing abandoned horses, developing therapeutic riding programs for children gaining life affirming skills from horse interaction, and campaigning for better horse care and responsible horse owner polices. They conduct workshops for people wanting to gain skills in these areas, as well. They are first rate!

Review for Center for Biological Diversity Inc, Tucson, AZ, USA
Center for Biological Diversity is a tough, lean, litigating machine--going after the biggest foes with nary a twitch. They use as much of their funding as possible on the actual suits and nothing on "fripperies" like free mugs or t-shirts or big mail campaigns. They use the intent and word of the environmental laws to protect the ecosystems and animals that other groups compromise with deal-making. I also like their pragmatic approach to the devilishly difficult issue of human population growth and the fundamental basis for all other environmental and societal problems that stem from it. This is unlike any other environmental group I know, but ignoring the human numbers factor is to ignore the 'elephant in the living room'

Review for Center for Biological Diversity Inc, Tucson, AZ, USA
The organization is lean and mean and gets a lot of legal changes for the better in protecting wildlife and habitat. Having had a long career and interest in population issues (the crux of all envirnmental problems on the plantet!!) I heartily endorse the CBD's emphasis on this terrible, neglected, fundamental problem. The education, legal protection and reproductive health of the world's females must stand front and center in addressing the environmental degradation.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
The sense that they will not sell out to any corporate or political entity. They take the unpopular but correct stand and stick to it.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
Hire more legal clout than they already have and really meet the corporate powers on a level field. They could also afford to buy into companies stock to the degree that would give them real advantage in voting policy decisions.
